Is This Something?

Come to Ace of Spades HQ, which shows you the only good part of the movies -- the trailers for other movies. Which at least have the promise of possibly being good, and cannot disappoint you. Yet.

Did anyone hear, at all, that they made a new Fletch? With Jon Hamm?

And it's already in theaters?

Warning: This is not something.

Here's a clip they think shows this movie off at its best:

Fletch F. Fletch is rolling over in his grave. Who's responsible for this? That pederast Hanorhan?

I opined about the earlier efforts to remake Fletch that I think they only have the rights to the books, and not to the Chevy Chase film. That's important, because the Chevy Chase film added almost all of the humor and characterization that people recognize as "Fletch." The Fletch of the book has that one killer joke -- "So. Will you kill me?" "Yes." -- but Fletch is otherwise a pretty standard and serious detective character. He's a toughguy Sam Spade-esque Vietnam War veteran, for one thing, and blond. Not at all what you think of when you think of as the cinematic Fletch.

For example, the Fletch of the movies makes up silly pseudonyms like "John Cocktoasten" or "Arthur Poon."

The Fletch of the book also makes up pseudonyms, but rather than make up ridiculous pseudonyms, he makes up names which are so bland and uninteresting that people cannot remember them. Which is his intention -- he wants to be forgotten. So he might claim his name is "Bob Toland" or something. (Which is a name from what book?)

It's kind of the same idea, except not really. The Fletch book idea is subtly amusing and pretty clever; the Fletch movie idea is definitely laugh-out-loud comedic.

That's my guess, anyway. I think they have to use the style of humor found in the books, and can't use the humor created for the Chevy Chase film, because they don't own that interpretation of Fletch.

MK Ultra:

I used to automatically reject "anti-government" movies. Not any longer!

The Estate. I like people in this, like Anna Farris and Ron Livingston and David Duchovny (well, eh on that one, but I know a lot people like him), but none of this seems funny. It just all misses me.

See if you can figure out who's playing the dying old woman before the trailer tells you.

So, confession: I really liked Knives Out. I thought the mystery was well-done and the detective's summary at the end was almost perfect, leaving no plot holes. (Well, I think I had one minor plot quibble, but I forget what it was, so I guess it wasn't that important.)

I didn't really mention that I liked it because Rian Johnson is a Soyboy Beta Cvck jerkoff and he deserves to fail.

But... yeah it was a good movie and no one makes detective movies anymore.

He's got a sequel coming out, this one apparently a take-off on the old premise of a group of people getting together for a Fake Murder Party but then, oh no, there's a real murder.

Which is a premise I can't resist. I don't think anyone can resist it.

Speaking of jerkoffs, The School for Good and Evil is yet another Harry Potter clone, this one with the small twist that it's a school for fairy tale characters. It's directed by...

Paul Feig. Yes, the Ghostbusters jerkoff.

What can I say? It looks okay, for a highly-derivative corporate rip-off clone-movie. I like fairy tale stuff. (Somewhat, I mean, I'm not a super fan.)

By the way, there's an Alexandria Daddario movie on prime, I think. it's based on a Shirley Jackson story. Called We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Tassia Farmigia and Sebastian Stan are in it.

It's a slow-boil psychological thriller about a twisted family with secrets, and an interloper (Sebastian Stan) with an agenda. The family living in the mansion are rich. They specifically mention that the father (deceased, dead of an unsolved poisoning) did not trust the banking system and so kept all of his money in the house safe.

Pretty sure they mentioned that for a reason.

I like it, though I have to admit I stopped watching it halfway through, but that was largely because I watched a lot of tv on Saturday. I would say it's good and worth watching, even though I'm not done. I like it. I'm recommending it on the strength of the first half.

There's an interesting dynamic. When Sebastian Stan shows up in the second act, you know he's got to have some agenda. It's just required by basic story imperatives. So he's at least somewhat of a bad guy. No spoilers here; I haven't even confirmed this. It's just necessary according to story logic. I mean, he's not showing up to not complicate the story and not add drama, right?

But the family living at the house -- Daddario, Farmigia, and this sad uncle I didn't mention -- are all so weird and twisted that you immediately lock into Sebastian Stan as your viewpoint character, even though you're pretty sure he's at least half a criminal and maybe a complete criminal. But at least he's not insane. At least, even if he is a murdering thief, I can comprehend his motives and psychology.

For the fans, Daddario wears only 40s style dresses with a lot of fabric but there's no hiding a kickin' rack that longs to breathe free air.

I'm going to finish that this weekend.

And then I might finally watch The Haunting, after hearing about it my whole life.

Knives Out is solid stuff. I've heard good things about Knives Out 2 (well, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery). It won 2nd place audience award or something at the Toronto film festival a week or so ago.

But what Ace is saying is that Fletch books are just about this guy who solves crimes. But he's a journalist. Not that he's Chevy Chase?

He played one in Bridesmaids and it worked. Again because he is good looking. Kirsten Wiig wouldn't have put up with being Thursday's piece (or whatever day it was) for Chevy Chase.

I don't know if I've read Confess, Fletch, but there certainly was some poker-faced humor in Fletch, the first novel. The vast majority of that book is dialog, including Fletch dictating notes to himself on his tape recorder. His responses to people like his newspaper editor boss and the boss's main squeeze are very funny. Hamm can do funny as needed, so this might be good stuff.

It's a shame for an old Ellery Queen/Rex Stout fan to admit it, but I have yet to see Knives Out. I'd read somewhere that Craig's "Cajun" dialect was not very good, and equated that to "movie not too good" without any evidence. It's time I got this DVD from the library. If the classical murder mystery is not to die out, we need to support movies and books that do it.

Haven't read that one in ages. Read it twice back in the day. My main takeaway was that it was badly edited and Clancy seemed to fit people's names in as an afterthought.

His subject matter trumped his poor writing style as well. Re-reading The Hunt for Red October that really stuck out. The pacing and topic are neat, but he reads like he's dictating the first draft.

70 Oddly, I have never read We Have Always Lived in the Castle beyond the first page or so. The first paragraph, in true Shirley Jackson fashion, is classic. Merrilee, the narrator, says that she has her third finger longer than her left. "I'd always hoped that would mean I would be a werewolf, but it was not to be." (Typed from memory, but the "werewolf" is definitely there.)

I think I have only seen The Haunting with Claire Bloom and Julie Harris once. Neat stuff. Pay attention to the parapsychologist guy, the actor, I mean, Richard Johnson. He was once in the running to play James Bond -- and I think he'd have made a pretty good one.

I can't recall if I've seen the whole movie. Now the novel, I've read it several times. It's a marvel of plot construction. MacDonald sets things up so that Fletch has several different problems to solve, some personal, aside from the mystery, and arranges it so that if he solves one, it will ruin one of more of the others for him. You can't see how he could possibly come out of all this . . . and yet he does. Sort of.

His subject matter trumped his poor writing style as well. Re-reading The Hunt for Red October that really stuck out. The pacing and topic are neat, but he reads like he's dictating the first draft. A. H. Lloyd.

A tossup between Michener and Clancy for the Verbosity Crown. Most of "Patriot Games" was really, really bad. "Rainbow Six" was a mess, but pertinent.

The Estate. I like people in this, like Anna Farris and Ron Livingston and David Duchovny (well, eh on that one, but I know a lot people like him), but none of this seems funny. It just all misses me.

I did recognize Toni Collette from Nightmare Alley which is...a hell of a film. Guillermo del Toro redid an old movie on circus life and...it is brutal.

But yeah, it's just a vehicle for Chevy's personality, which is fun to watch 3rd person, but dickish irl. Think Hamm is attempting the Leslie Nielson maneuver as he ages. He's a good straight man, so the quality of the gags around him is the important thing.

I always considered Patriot Games as the one that Clancy wrote specifically to be a movie script. It was shorter than the rest and was a more personal action story than the others which had a lot more thinking going on.

He had people publicly and constantly harass his students with private info he collected on them to see what they'd do.

Would disagree about True Grit. There was some stuff in it that didn't need to be there, but in terms of the acting and the overall style, I thought it very true to the novel and enjoyed it (after I swore I wouldn't when I first heard of it).

250 I wrote somewhere else that if you were a popular movie or TV character in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, odds are you would get a remake or a follow up soon.

So it goes with Fletch. They are clearly trying to play off the Chevy Chase films, but what they don't seem to grasp is that Chase was a comedian first (and never really played anything serious). Hamm is a serious actor who can sorta do comedy (mostly not), so if they are trying to continue the vibe Chase brought to the Fletch movies it will fail.

Hollywood just can't do original movies like they used to, but it's so obvious now they are flinging stuff at the wall to see what sticks.

Did you watch the last season of Cobra Kai? It's so bad I would have thought a drunk Jonny Lawrence in an Iron Maiden T-shirt wrote it.

I like the original Fletch, it's endlessly quoteable. Fletch 2 wasn't all that great. A reboot has been the works for a couple decades at least, and if I'm remembering right, Jason Lee was rumored to be considered for the role towards the beginning of the process.

I truly liked Knives Out as well. I thought it was very well done, and that Daniel Craig did a good job in his role.

A friend told me that in conversation with some native Germans he and his American pals would casually throw around obscenties and one of them dropped "Fickst du dich!" and the Germans had not only never heard of that formulation, but the concept was unknown to them.

They wept with laughter over the phrase, babbling that it was physically impossible, but so funny.

He's got a basketball movie on Netflix I think with Queen Latifah. It's a good film.

He does what he likes. He gets his friends to do movies with him, and some of them are good and well written and some of them are crap, and with few exceptions they all look fun.

Also: he has a movie with his IRL wife in it, AND he casts Salma Hayek as his wife in the movie.

Sandler does have the life and his friends he brought up with him.

Uncut gems is still an ugly movie. He wanted it to be gritty but the sound design makes you feel the shitty sounds of a rush hour NYC street corner. Not enjoyable.

There was a second basketball movie he did that was much better. It's called Hustle. And it's much more of a Sandler high-effort movie (unlike the movies he makes while on vacation like Murder Mystery or Blended. I'll recommend that one.
