Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Washington Post: Americans "Resigned" to Inflation, "Feeling Better" About Dealing With ItThe Washington Post published a news article by economy reporter Abha Bhattarai that said Americans are getting used to inflation and "learning to deal with" it. This runs contrary to various indicators, including a Gallup poll which found that 56% of Americans said inflation is causing hardship. "After months of gloom, Americans are finally starting to feel better about the economy and more resigned to inflation," Bhattarai wrote. "Americans are making small changes -- buying meat in bulk, for example, or shifting more of their shopping to discount chains -- suggesting that many families are learning to deal with higher prices," she continued. The "Maddowblog" says that gas prices are "improving" so much that the GOP is forced to shift its election focus. Meanwhile, Janet Yellen admits that gas prices could surge this winter. But don't worry, she has a plan to stop oil prices from surging -- a price cap. And price caps always* stop demand-provoked price increases! Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen admitted there is a "risk" that US gas prices will surge again this winter after months of steady declines. Yellen cited potentially fraught conditions in Europe as members of the European Union wean off Russian oil shipments and mull the imposition of a price cap in response to the brutal invasion of Ukraine. "It's a risk and it's a risk that we're working on the price cap to try to address," Yellen said during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. "This winter, the European Union will cease, for the most part, buying Russian oil and in addition, they will ban the provision of services that enable Russia to ship oil by tanker. It is possible that could cause a spike in oil prices." "Our price cap proposal is designed to both lower Russian revenues that they use to support their economy and fight this illegal war while also maintaining Russian oil supplies to hold down global oil prices," Yellen added.* Defining "always" as "never." The glory days of Trump's economy is 18 months ago -- an eternity in today's world. Those days are rapidly fading into history. Gas prices are still much higher than under Trump, but they are considerably lower than at their peak under Biden. That's all people care about. $2 gas is prehistoric at this point. I warned and warned and warned against putting all our eggs into one basket and relying nearly 100% on the state of the economy for November. I warned that people would get used to it and things would improve from the worst. I hope I'm wrong but I'm feeling vindicated at this point. Markey (D-Mass.) joined New England colleagues led by Senator Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) in a bipartisan call for the Biden Administration to take action to lower energy costs for New Englanders as the winter season approaches and Americans continue to face high energy costs. 37 How do we price cap Russian oil prices? what am I missing??
Posted by: Sunny at September 12, 2022 12:41 PM (Q47Lc) It's a lame attempt to set up a buyers cartel of Russian oil, where we will only allow them to sell it to us at say $60 a barrel or insert arbitrary price here. Anybody with a hint of sense can see the problem here, trying to do that nonsense with a globally-traded commodity. Best-case scenario here is that the Russians continue to do what they're doing, selling that oil to say India and having the Indians, or whomever, sell the oil themselves or its derivates to Europe and the West. Worst-case scenario is that the Russians just simply don't sell any oil or derivative to any country enforcing this stupid price cap idea, which would be only Europe and Western nations. Posted by: Thrawn at September 12, 2022 12:48 PM (Rl7KJ) ++++ It is also a startling admission of failure. The entire response over Ukraine was predicated on Europe having monopsony power for Russian energy. Biden laid this out very clearly in his January presser, when he talked about how Russia is at least as dependent on European energy purchasing as Europe is on the Russian energy they purchase. As he put it, Russia won't "bite off its nose to spite its face." Last year, China thought they had monopsony power when they muscled Australia and cut off Australian coal to hurt Australia for asking questions about COVID. They learned otherwise - that there are other markets. Europe has now learned the same. Building a buyer's cartel to try to approximate monopsony power will fail, because the new customers for Russian energy aren't going to join the cartel. What the left fails to realize is that the price of Gas came down for 1 reason only, demand dropped. No Government policy reduced the price of gas. No government policy increased the supply of gas. Inflation tightened belts to the point that unnecessary travel dropped. Food and shelter cost significantly more and haven't gone down.
Plenty of people cancelled their vacations over the summer due to the cost of gas. When winter comes the price of gas will be based on demand still and no government policy is in play that has caused the price of gas to decrease or the supply to increase. Troubled waters are ahead. Americans counter consumer product 'shrinkflation' with new spending habits, survey says
https://t.co/vV06RftBQ7 As inflation continues to rise, more consumers have begun to notice that the product size of their purchases is shrinking. This phenomenon, dubbed "shrinkflation" is worrying Americans and even driving them to change their purchasing habits. A new survey from Morning Consult showed that 54% of Americans have seen, read or heard something about shrinkflation, and 64% are worried about it. In fact, only 25% said they haven’t noticed shrinkflation in any grocery categories. Snacks are the biggest example of shrinkflation as 55% of Americans noticed these foods are decreasing in size or quantities as prices remain the same or even increase. Other items Americans have grown concerned about include pantry items, frozen foods, meat and bread and other pastries. Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at September 12, 2022 01:10 PM (MFZ8i) 285

Credit card debt jumped by $46 billion, or 13%, by the end of the second quarter of 2022, the biggest percentage increase in more than 20 years, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Masters campaign web site is decent. His policy positions are there to read.

The Brits say heads of state attending the Queen's funeral can't bring their own cars and can't use their helicopters for local movement. Heads of state will be brought in en masse on buses. I can't see the Secret Service approving this arrangement for Puddinhead. And those buses sure do seem like juicy targets for white supremacists and/or transphobic climate deniers.

"resigned" is that what they are calling it? Credit card debt is surging to record levels due to people not being able to afford basic necessities like food and gas due to inflation and they claim people are "feeling better about it"?
Idiots. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at September 12, 2022 12:42 PM (bVYXr) == The last stage is hallucinations - where you convince yourself the world view you worship like a god - so much for all your shots at traditional religious folks for being so unscientific - will happen or is happening even when the exact opposite is happening. In our neighborhood the next wave of grocery store price hikes is starting. As much as they have been going up, I noticed the latest round, and kind of said here we go again. Gas has stabilized just under $4 a gallon here. Utility payments are behind, phone bills are behind, car repos are up, credit card balances are up. It is a bit uneven, some have lots of cash squirreled away after all the fed giveaways, some are right on the edge. Yellen is just playing the part. She is not dumb enough to believe anything she said. At least I hope she isn't. Posted by: Black JEM at September 12, 2022 02:08 PM (xWZcb) 614
It's a soul-crushing and dream-destroying inflation but in a good way! Come on, "Bidinflation" will be good for Mother Earth.

Biden has been dumping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve big time. That's why gas is going lower along with higher prices creating less demand as people adjust.

Do you know what comes after funflation, not more inflation, but scarcity. It will not matter how much it costs, it simply will no longer be available. Not high food prices, famine. I am already seeing bare shelves in the supermarket. #BareShelvesBiden is accelerating, as expected.
Oh, and do not think it will be possible to just ship it from overseas at greater cost (assuming you can anymore, see transportation bottleneck). The people who are causing scarcity here are now also over there, and those other countries may simply decide that they will keep their food rather than sell it to us for worthless pieces of paper. Biden has been draining the Strategic Oil Reserve to keep prices down until the election.
After the election, of course, they will start buying to re-fill it. This, aside from other factors, guarantees prices will go back above $4 per gallon by Christmas. Posted by: Callawyn at September 13, 2022 03:07 AM (sKM7R) 624
