Amy Curtis: The "Washington Generals of Punditry" Still Have Not Given a Single Moment of Reflection to Their Own Failures or Betrayals -- Or Their Own Starring Role in Electing President Donald John Trump

(No discussion of dicks allowed in this thread. This is a dick-free zone.)

A rant.

Amy Curtis
@RantyAmyCurtis

I'm gonna go off because I'm just that fed up.

For years, the GOP pundit class pushed weak, ineffective candidates. Guys who talked about taxes while letting the left steamroll education, culture, news media, social media.

Those candidates lost. Repeatedly. 2012 was a very WINNABLE election. And what did Romney do when they accused him of giving a woman cancer and other horrible, not-true things? He shrugged. He didn't fight. He just took it. "Dignity." Fighting back was beneath him. Or something.

Every Republican, for as long as I can remember, has been the reincarnation of Hitler every election cycle. The left HATED Dick Cheney from 2000-2008. And now? He's their hero for speaking out against Trump. But when he sheds this mortal coil, they'll dance and spit on his grave.

Every single member of the Washington Generals of Punditry has betrayed every principle they claimed to have. On abortion. On taxes. On foreign policy. Every last one. And why? Because hating Trump is more important and lucrative than those principles.

They have literally endorsed Democrats -- including the barley sentient vegetable currently occupying the Oval Office -- because of their unhinged hatred of Trump. And his voters.

And instead of trying to figure out how they got Trump in the first place -- because they had a HUGE HAND in it -- they double down on calling voters stupid and deplorable & a slew of other pejoratives because it gets them head pats from the media/left. Who still hate them anyway.

Because while they were fawning over absolutely milquetoast candidates the left was making headway in schools and culture. Now? Your white kid is likely to learn he's a horrible racist simply because of his skin color.

Your daughter could be brainwashed into thinking she's a boy because her teacher told her so.

Good luck trying to be a white, cis, hetero person trying to break into publishing these days. Good luck trying to find kids books that don't show fellatio or other woke garbage.

Parents were labeled terrorists -- TERRORISTS -- for speaking out at school board meetings. By the federal government. While Antifa and BLM and Jane's Revenge burn your cities to the ground.

If you had your business shut down, couldn't visit your dying loved ones, couldn't have a funeral while you watch George Floyd get multiple ones, and BLM/Antifa march through the streets during COVID, thank the GOP pundit class. Who did NOTHING to defend your rights.

Like every other social/cultural issue, they expected you to bend over and take it. And when someone tries to stand up to the nonsense -- DeSantis -- they whine about dictators and the breakdown of norms.

When what they mean by norms is "doing things our way, even if it sucks."

And when a candidate like DeSantis comes along, who is an alternative to Trump -- they say he's just like Trump because they want to go back to the McCains and Romneys and Jebs.

News flash: we aren't.

So if you want to get rid of Trump, stop obsessing over your hatred of him. Start endorsing Republican candidates who aren't Trump. Instead of, you know, Democrats.

And for the love of God, spend ten minutes reflecting on how we got here today, and how you played a big part in it. Maybe talk to normal people outside the Beltway about life and politics.

Via Twitchy, which had commentary as well.

On this very subject, Dave Reaboi has written Liz Cheney's political Oh, Bitch-uary.

Liz Cheney's martyrdom is catnip for a dwindling number of Republicans who, unable to recognize what time it is, prioritize performative virtue in politics. These people--nearly all suburban, moderate, establishment Republicans employed as conservative columnists--seek their reflection in the politicians they support, because their heroes' supposedly superior virtue reflects back on them.

This allows them to flatter their own egos without feelings of shame or self-aggrandizement. "Mitt Romney is a good man," they've repeated, mantra-like since the Utah Senator's spectacular loss in 2012--even as that assessment is based solely on a carefully-crafted media campaign that hardened, through much repetition, into conventional wisdom. (Of course, Romney is a stand-in for any number of political figures the media has assured us are "good, honorable men," from Volodymyr Zelensky to John McCain. Just ask them.)

It's no accident that, like French and Bill Kristol, most of Cheney's once-Republican fans and defenders came of age professionally during the George W. Bush administration--and it's clear that they'll go to their retirements with the strong imprint of the politics of that time. While Bush's GOP will always be known for the unwon wars in the Middle East, it was nevertheless a "compassionate conservatism," prioritizing virtue-signaling and heroic posturing rhetoric as policy, regardless of its absurdity.

For some liberal Republicans terrified and confused in the current moment in American political life, a frenzied hatred of Donald Trump masks issues that seem intractable. Not only is there no danger of being canceled by hostile reporters, editors and cable news hosts, these faux-dissidents can bask in media coverage usually reserved for the most progressive Democrats. But these are benefits that accrue to anyone willing to abandon conservatives.

Cheney has a seriousness and sobriety about her, which is key to her appeal as a martyr. The martyr fetish is something that overlaps with the sexual or political cuckold: the humiliation that comes from rejection is the thrill.

This is best exemplified by performative martyr David French, the Atlantic writer who, for the last half-decade, has seemed eager to play out his psychosexual fantasies publicly. Since 2016, he has lashed out in vicious and brutal columns about Trump voters, especially Christians--and then, of course, he gets to wave his own bloody shirt, writing almost erotically about people saying nasty things to and about him on the Internet. Like a martyr or a cuckold, the hatred he engenders proves the rightness of his cause and, more importantly, his superior virtue.

@davereaboi
David Reaboi, Late Republic Nonsense
@davereaboi

"Honor," my ass. It's David French's cuck honor--a gimp's mixture of limitless self-regard, an intense martyr fetish, and grotesque, lickspittle devotion to a party and movement that's defined half the country as less-than-human terrorists.

Replying to:

Jeff B. is *BOX OFFICE POISON* @EsotericCD

Make no mistake: Liz Cheney *chose* this fate. She was not squeezed by circumstance or the vulgarities of politics or need for private gain. She could have remained Representative (and maybe then Senator) for life from Wyoming if she'd said nothing.

She chose honor instead.

...

No, it didn't begin with January 6th. For four years on the Hill, Cheney--together with the remnants of the failed Weekly Standard--relatively quietly indulged in the Democrats' most absurd Russia conspiracy theories. They circulated now-discredited opposition research, listened to maniacs hawking books and podcasts to Democrat hyper-partisans, and nodded sagely when discussing absurdities like Jon Chait's 4000-word claim that the ex-president has spent nearly four decades as a deep cover KGB agent of influence.

Cheney and the boys who send her love notes at the Dispatch and Bulwark aren't necessarily dumb or unsophisticated people; they're just broken. They are blinded by a hatred that deforms their ability to properly assess situations. The bottomless evil they saw in Trump, they believed, made him capable of anything. And, if he was capable, he was surely guilty of anything the most fevered imagination could concoct.

Well, you know: It's not just Trump they're repulsed by. It's Trump's voters -- and they are determined that Trump's Voters must never have a say in electoral politics.

The cvcks spent 50 years conning, duping, sabotaging, undermining, gatekeeping, bullying, Hobbitting, and silencing Trump Voters from ever having any say in the Republican Party.

What they're really angry at is that their greatest achievement -- Making the Republican Party Safe for Liberal Democrats -- was undone by a single boorish man talking about putting up an uncouth wall at the Mexican border.

And they are determined that the Underpeople will never be permitted to have their votes counted again.

I'm glad all of these filthy interlopers have gone back to the Democrat Party that they came from. And, let's face it, the Democrat Party is a lot close to the their Dream Party now that they're all on the same side as far as censoring the opposition, controlling thought, punishing dissidents, officially ensconcing a neo-feudal Professional Managerial Class as an aristocracy with rights and privileges beyond those allowed the commoners, using the FBI and even the CIA against the opposition, going to war promiscuously to show we can still get it hard on a national level, etc.

Asa Hutchinson, who, as Tucker remarked, is has been taking powerful hormones to transition into a liberal Walmart board member, confirms every nasty thing said about the Establishment Corporate Traitor class:

Jeff B. is *BOX OFFICE POISON*

There is nothing honorable about denying your enemies due process, running a kangaroo court, pushing the country into poorly thought out wars, or joining with the left in its republic-destroying hysteria. Stop calling seething hatred honorable.

23 Nope, sorry. The "cocktail party" quips were funny a decade ago, but considering Hastert, Larry Craig, and Michael Steele it's pretty obvious that the GOP leadership is mostly composed of extremely sick freaks. Even a former Manhattan hedonist like Donald Trump is likely disgusted.

They're all extremely blackmailable by the Epstein network, and I have no doubt that Cawthorn only scratched the surface of it. It's actually for the best that he lost his primary. His soul is simply worth more than winning, and if he disagrees there wouldn't be much value to his win anyways.

I reply with what I said on twitter: for all the ranting about how Trump lost us the Senate with his election comments during the run-off, we wouldn't have been in that position if the GOP hadn't chosen atrocious candidates in McSally and Loeffler. Both of those women were appointed by establishment-friendly governors, and both were McConnell's picks.

The GOPe likes nice, squishy, corporate-friendly Republicans who will talk about tax cuts and platitudes towards the military and police, but won't make waves. They want low-turnout elections where they don't make big promises.

Trump was the opposite: he wanted high-turnout elections and a bigger coalition.

Cheney knew, that fat shit goldberg knew.. they all knew. They chose to lie and it is not about Trump, but about him doing things the public wanted done.

151 With the GOP as controlled opposition, the United States was a one-party totalitarian state a long, long time before Trump turned over the money changers' tables. The recent actions of the FBI are meant to convey there will be no dissent, no opposition, nothing that approximates democracy brooked.

But, again, within the span of three months we have seen the last Bush (P) and Cheney (Liz) thrown onto the ash heap of history. Is it too late? Probably. But it feels good. These types will remain embedded a long time, and they may be able to outlast the official elimination of actual political opposition, democracy and dissent in the United States.

The raid on Mar-A-Lago had far more to do with the recent defeats of controlled opposition Judas goats than with Trump. I will vote for him, or write him in if he is disqualified or murdered, because it represents a no-confidence vote in the United States government. Posted by: Blago
------------------------
it is not uber conservatives but populists. Conservatism as a philosophy for endless wars, open borders, luv them some corporate tax cuts, and surrender to liberals on social issues is DEAD and so are candidates that push that.

The corporate types are pushed by McConnell and GOPe establishment candidates because they get Chamber of Commerce and wealthy donor funding. That can be blown on stupid tv ads, craptastic mailers, endless robocalls, and braindead social media campaigns that make campaign consultants a fortune. In office, these candidates promptly shit on their constituencies in favor of whatever Dems and their big donors want.

That is what killed your type of candidate--they are disingenuous to their voters and exist only to assist Dems by growing in office while the country gets more broken. The only thing these GOP help is themselves to the trough.

In times past it was assumed that honor was a strictly masculine trait and that women could have no honor. This was partly due to sexist stupidity, partly due to honor being so closely related to combat and feats at arms, and partly due to the idea that someone as changable and emotionally driven as an average woman could not really be consistent and honorable.

248 Election victory after election victory Republicans would always tell us why they couldnt actually pass any of the policies that they promised they would pass if we would vote for them. And election after election I fell for it and believed them. I will be forever grateful to Trump for exposing these charlatans for who they are and opening my eyes to the fact that I have been a complete fool for most of my life (only Reagan was worthy). Just looking back on the W. Bush years...what a waste! Not only did the Republicans squander 8 years but Bush himself proved that he had nothing but disdain for his base. Every chance he got he scolded us for wanting to harass or kill Muslims like that was inherent in our nature. In retrospect - which Trump has made evident - Bush was the worst of the worst in the "conservative" camp grifting as a good guy for votes.

I guess we'll have the perfect experiment and see? With the added tail wind that GOP candidates will generically win big in 2022. The Senate contest in AZ is a good example, Blake Masters is a terrible candidate and I predict he'll lose by a bigger margin than Martha McSally did.

Again, I don't buy this theory that someone that shows up to vote Trump, but then votes Democrat or leaves the ballot blank on other candidates. It's a conservative urban legend.

And I can lay it at THEIR feet. THEIR policies caused this... Well... just so happens I'm alone now... Son is out of State... don't give a damn what the rest of the family thinks... so... Politeness is done.

Two years of this crap is seriously going to impact our lifestyle going into our 70s just when we need it most. Couple our 401k losses with the lame cost of living increase we see in our social security and Navy pensions and we are losing ground every month. Not to mention our savings account is hemorrhaging money every month to inflation.

266 When it comes down to it, Cheney and McCain are simply little girls acting out over remarks someone made about their daddy.

Cheney flipped on Trump because he pointed out there was never a war she or her father would pass up which she proved with her constant drumbeat over war with Syria, then Russia over Ukraine, and I'm sure there are at least half a dozen I have left out.

McCain went off when Trump made his comment that McCain was constantly called a hero, but in his opinion, hero s do not get shot down. And since she has little ability to get past her father's death to see what Trump actually did for the country, she can't let it go. She has made it her life's work to demonize Trump over a nasty political remark.

They are both immature little brats who shouldn't have any kind of a platform because their childish emotional states.

Cheney' has single mindedly destroyed her family's political legacy and memory with her mentally ill need to get the great white whale.

277 One of the biggest mistakes of the founding fathers was not including a standard mechanism for a state leaving the union. No doubt they thought it was not necessary, since states were considered sovereign and the probably figured a state could leave whenever they wished but would find it more beneficial to stay in the union.

I'm not as well read on the Federalist and anti-Federalist papers maybe something about the topic is in there.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

Rather, they thought it would never happen. The CSA to be states did a lot of scrabbling around for justifications of why secession was legal as well as good and proper. They didn't do a convincing job.

In the Revolution, we just tossed King George away and didn't look back, we hardly bothered trying to find some dusty old citation in a lawbook that said it was OK. We were ceasing to care what England thought on the matter.

This repeated need for the CSA to be the inheritor of the US tradition is the biggest clue that they hadn't really made a nation of themselves.

I highly suspect that, had the north just said "OK you can go" that the south would have torn its self to pieces in ridiculous infighting and ended up a series of small poverty states on the US border, maybe some joining up into the USA again later. 314 One of the biggest mistakes of the founding fathers was not including a standard mechanism for a state leaving the union.

____

The Civil War answered that question, I think a peaceful secession would have been fine, but Lincoln didn't. The Southern states said since they joined voluntarily they could leave voluntarily.

The Founders made lots of mistakes, we had like 8 "Presidents" before George Washington.

The biggest mistake was probably the Judiciary Branch, it just took about 180 years to rear its ugly head with Earl Warren.

Also, should have had term limits.

316 This repeated need for the CSA to be the inheritor of the US tradition is the biggest clue that they hadn't really made a nation of themselves.

I highly suspect that, had the north just said "OK you can go" that the south would have torn its self to pieces in ridiculous infighting and ended up a series of small poverty states on the US border, maybe some joining up into the USA again later. It certainly would have weakened the USA as a whole in later events like WW2.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 16, 2022 07:15 PM (Ivdso)

Certainly the dropping of the true "freedom line" from Canada to the Ohio would have made escaping more common. The states near the border with the north were already feeling 'pressure' because as the slave percentage dropped the politics became less surely with the slave interest. KY and MO did not secede, half of VA and MD and DE didn't either. VA only remained a reliable slave state by not redistricting for the last 30 years thus ignoring the growth of the inland areas with white small farms which had different interests with few or no slaves.

For their structure they had resurrected the old Articles of Confederation, which had failed miserably the first time they were tried. They would have failed just as badly, and in fact were already failing by the end of the conflict. Lee's army was starving and running out of supplies and ammunition while Georgia and other states were sitting on warehouses full of what Lee needed, refusing to turn it over since they thought they might need it more. Under the articles, the central government had no authority to countermand the State's decision to let the army starve in the field.

320 Essentially, in some sense, the Cheney-Bush-Romney types lost their rudder as those moving in their social circles plus their children move left. These are people in the high SES ranks and major contributors in the past to the Republicans. So you see Bush, Cheney, etc. embrace gay marriage, push government run health care, kill the effectiveness of our armed forces by experimentation in social mores, kiss the ass of our foreign dependent countries, and so on. No one in their community lacks a job, education, downward social mobility, and so on because they have been insulated from all the horrendous costs in policy failures that have constituted everything since the Great Society and perhaps the New Deal.

Friedman laid it out succinctly--you can have a welfare state, you can have open borders but you can only chose one of those. I would also add spending vast amounts on defense, not for ourself, but for allies as one of the choices. The combination of world policeman, open borders for trade and immigration even from rival states, and crippling liberal education, health, and social policies have cumulatively destroyed 50 years of wealth for the lower and middle classes.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 16, 2022 07:19 PM (Ivdso)

Catholics believe works are sanctifying, not that you earn your way into heaven. Atonement helps reinforce the sincerity of repentance and discourages additional lapses. One thing to be repentant in the moment, another to stay that way.

Asking other people to donate as your atonement would seem to miss the point though.

Some of that is true, but part is that these stores were raised as excess by those states and thus the govt had to automatic call on them. The man in charge of the Commissary was a notorious incompetent and when he was sacked things started to improve quite a bit in getting the inconsistencies worked out. 383 The question has always been, "why has Trump become so popular, why more popular than a Romney who is wealthy, or Carson who was extremely personable?"
Trump, after all, is very flawed man.

over the weekend there was a discussion as to why Rorschach was the hero of the Watchmen, and I think it is because in a world of moral ambiguity, where the powerful (the superheroes in that world) are constrained only by their shifting personal views of what is moral and correct, only Rorschach was inflexible in his morality and what that meant his duty was, and unwilling up to and including death, to abandon it.

I suspect a lot of people felt that way about Trump.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy

You forgot how that all went down. Bush was begging for the VP slot, but Reagan was trying to get Ford to agree to the spot on the ticket.

Being a former president, Ford toyed with the idea, but in the end turned it down. Going to a VP slot was too much of a loss of prestige.

At that point, Reagan really had no other choices, but the guy who had come in second in the primaries.

Navarro may be using that as a shrouded signal. Khashoggi was part of the internecine warfare between factions of the royal family. One side had the insidious bin Talal, Prince Bandar, etc. while the other has the King and the new heir Prince Salman. There is some suggestion that the Vegas Mass Shooting was actually a targeted hit on Salman by the other faction that went awry. Thus, payback by incarcerating the other side like Talal and getting rid of some of the other supporters of that faction like Khashoggi. Talal by the way was also a big investor in Fox News.

417 Conservative voters still don't really understand the full depth of the Republican Party betrayal.

The GOP in control in D.C. does not not believe in any of the things they say they do. They are the Handmaidens to the Democrat party. They are the Eyegore to their Dr. Frahkenshteen. They are the apprentices to the Masters. They know their place. Properly understood the Democrats are the full, firm foot on the accelerator driving the Ever Expanding State; the GOP is the occasional, brief tap on the deceleratrix. The Democrats exist to rough out the HUGE megalithic blocks of society-altering legislation, Supreme Court rulings and irreversible Executive Orders. The GOP serve to dress the rough edges so they slide smoothly into the interlocking cyclopian mega-structure, never to be moved again. The GOP never "fails to deliver", they always succeed in their true objectives.

"Conservative" media like NR and pundicrats like Goldberg's job is to direct our energies and attention down "correct" paths and keep the "crazies" marginalized. They always have been, and they always will. They failed with Trump, which is why they fear and hate him so.

The founder was a mystic(not meant in a derogatory fashion, you've got a sort of logician-mystic spectrum on approaches to theology). Most of the not knightly orders are pretty intellectual, the Catholic priesthood as a whole handled most scholarly and scientific stuff post-west Roman empire.

The corruption of the Jesuits is historically pretty recent. Catholic Church has struggled to resist communism/socialism generally despite explicit condemnation.

436 Want to bet. Reagan Democrats were a thing. Reagan had the common touch--Bush did not. Bush lost because he literally could not defend what he did--screwing over the people by acceding to the Dem taxes, not finishing off Saddam, and preparing the US for Ross Perot's giant sucking sound. Bush II, damn near lost reelection and screwed the pooch in 2000 by not revealing his drunk driving in the primaries and dealing with that issue. He pissed off Tom Stafford enough to lose the Senate and once again did the LBJ wars, guns and butter inflation plus the 2006 election disaster giving us batshit crazy Nanzi. Bush barely got some Reagan Dems of them via gay marriage plus patriotism in 04.

That was the era where conservative Democrats were a real thing. Especially in the South. That's long gone.

HW Bush lost because of a recession, Perot, and he just sucked. Clinton was like the perfect Democrat and we had 12 years of the GOP in the White House.

446 412 I suspect a lot of people felt that way about Trump.
Posted by: Kindltot at August 16, 2022 07:32 PM (xhaym)

I believe for most, it's quite simple. Trump is actually on our side. None of those other assholes in Washington are. The people screaming "Trump is horrible, why don't you hate him?" have always been the same people trying to destroy Me and everything I believe in. Now for me, when someone complains about Trump, the only "discussion" I can see happening is "Fuck You! you chose your side, I chose mine. Talking about it is over."

FWIW, Kushner's guy, former NEC head (gary cohn) got pushed out by Trump's more hardline Sec. of Commerce, Trade Rep Kitzhaber, and Navarro specifically over tariffs and trade policy.

Kushner leaked it that he supported Cohn over the hard liners. A lot of the discussion hinged around China trade policy with Trump eventually moving toward the harder line with China.

That is where the specific bad blood might be.

We'd need a different mindset for that. Even in 1990, we'd have done a nice guy occupation and opened the door for the quagmire all the same. Remember, back then we still had troops in Europe and Korea (i think). No way we clobber Iraq and not hang around.

456 Kushner was obviously HEAVILY involved with Trump at every level. And he usually pushed him in the wrong direction, like prison sentencing reform, etc.

Guy was also a huge Democrat donor, endorsed Obama.

We didn't elect Kushner, he's a liberal trust fund brat that had no business wielding that sort of power.

462 That was the era where conservative Democrats were a real thing. Especially in the South. That's long gone.

HW Bush lost because of a recession, Perot, and he just sucked. Clinton was like the perfect Democrat and we had 12 years of the GOP in the White House.

I don't really think conservative Democrats are the modern swing voter. Or that these people split their tickets by voting all Democrat and then voting Trump.

Posted by: Blago
---------------------------
Wrong, the Reagan Democrats were in the North like Ohio, etc. Southerners were already moving since Nixon toward the GOP because the Dems became identified with school busing, soft on crime, and soft on national defense in the South.

All of this is documented if you actually care to look at old returns and polling from a much more reliable era. I suggest the NES series of polling data which has been done since the 50's. I was actually active in politics during that era working on federal, state and local elections which I kept up until the 90's.

470 445 At that point, Reagan really had no other choices, but the guy who had come in second in the primaries.
Posted by: Dave in Fla

----------------
Reagan had choices but Jim Baker and GOPe pushed hard for a unity ticket of Reagan and Bush. The reason Reagan turned down making Ford VP is that supposedly Ford folks if not Ford demanded a co-presidency. The California folks did not want Ford on the ticket either after the hard feelings in 1976. Bush was chosen to unify the party by giving GOPe a chance to get back into office. Bush used that time, not to study Reagan, but to use his constituency and then promptly stab them in the back just as he did when he lost his House seat.

478 I guess we'll have the perfect experiment and see? With the added tail wind that GOP candidates will generically win big in 2022. The Senate contest in AZ is a good example, Blake Masters is a terrible candidate and I predict he'll lose by a bigger margin than Martha McSally did.

Again, I don't buy this theory that someone that shows up to vote Trump, but then votes Democrat or leaves the ballot blank on other candidates. It's a conservative urban legend.
