  • Too many employees, but few work. (Business Standard)

    Mark Zuckerberg:
Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn't be here. And part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might just say that this place isn't for you. And that self-selection is okay with me.
    Sundar Pichai:
There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the head count we have. [We need to] create a culture that is more mission-focused, more focused on our products, more customer-focused
Maybe you should have thought of that before you spent ten years hiring communists and destroying your respective companies from the inside.

7 Her's a totally "non techy" observation: Mark Zuckerberg is a weirdo. Bill Gates is a weirdo> I would include non-techy types like the WEF malignant narcissists or sociopaths-when you have billions of dollars you think you can do anything because you supposedly created something. Your money gives you the right, you think ,to act like a God, and you will bring in the perfect social order. These folks are totally lacking in humility and will deserve their judgement from God.

I've got a 2021 Traverse that has the in dash navigation system. In June I received an email from GM that it was time for an update on the map, which I don't use that much as it is, to me, awkward.

Cost? 100 bucks. You mean you just can send me a thumbdrive or send it via the intertoob?

So, no thanks. I'll continue using my 99 dollar Garmin I bought 10 years ago. With FREE map updates for life.

26 Evening, Pixy! Another quote from Dorothy Parker, or reference at least?

I've been a GM guy, off and mostly on, for years: 2 Oldsmobiles and 3 Buicks. NO, with only SUVs from Buick, very few sedans, and this mandatory OnStar thing? Not so much. Not that I would be buying a *new* new car any time in this life, but the very idea annoys me. What about the second owner of the car? Can he call up GM and cancel this always-enabled service?

28 Morning, all,

I woke up to water on my kitchen floor this am and had to mop (with a mop that is disintegrating) and disconnect Stirling's water fountain. I can't tell if it's leaking, but it's awfully coincidental that, right after Miss Linda cleans the fountain, I begin to find water on the floor. This is not a splash or two as if Stirling had been playing with the running water; it's more like a small leak. And I have to buy a new mop, you know, the kind with the handle that lets you squeeze out the sponge.

Wonderful way to start a day.

29 What about the second owner of the car? Can he call up GM and cancel this always-enabled service?
Posted by: Peter Venkman

Since it's all paid in the original purchase price, I would think not. And I'd be willing to bet that somewhere in the fine print is a charge to the new owner if the car is sold.

32 Most if not all large corporations have a certain number of dead beat employees. I remember once while having a break in the cafeteria, the president of the company stood up on a chair and told everyone to get back to work. Most employees were taking 30 or more minute breaks morning and afternoon. The company went bankrupt a few years later and layed off
thousands. If your value to the company doesn't exceed your pay.....your eventually gone.

Oh, the HR groups at these tech companies are ground zero for wokeness. I read the discrimination lawsuits against Google by that dude who dares post about why there's lack of women in tech a few years back and it was unreal how these tech companies are run. They have internal social media where people can spend all sorts of time pontificating and debating non-work stuff, and worse, the HR sides with the activists. Their HR appear to have been disregarding employment law for years, taking sides with the woke employees targeting normal employees.
Honestly, I am amazed there have not been more lawsuits.

Perhaps nobody remembers, but HR was first to go in 2001 and last to be rehired. And it takes a long period of prosperity to bring them back.

I was one step removed from industry for 2008, but I expect that there were similar slaughters, and we exerperienced a period of drought. Being on the leading edge of investment for tech, we had a LONG drought.

The best and quickest way to raise productivity is to announce to employees that the company is measuring productivity.

GE discovered this little phenomenon way back when. They increased lighting and productivity went up. They decreased lighting and productivity went up. They painted the walls purple and productivity went up. They painted the walls black and productivity went up. In the end they discovered the truth, that the employees being aware that productivity was being measured caused them to work harder.

But how do you measure the productivity of a Facebook 'worker'?

His wife (a veterinary surgeon) suggests this all happened suddenly because of high triglycerides and maybe a dodgy diet. I can't help think it might be related to the clot shot since I read about the CEO of an insurance group predicting 5,000% increase in "excess deaths" in 2022.

I mean, complex 3D graphics chips have been evolving for almost 30 years, so Intel jumping in now for the first time was bound to be problematic.

Strange things about Covid that we've not seen in other viruses:

1) Evolutionary microbiologists agreed it was unlikely to have evolved naturally (at least they agreed before Fauci got to them - I put this together over a year ago: https://tinyurl.com/kdj82cs7).
2) There is no permanent immunity - natural or vaccinated. You can (and do) catch the same variant multiple times.
3) Breakthrough infections: you are infectious even in your brief window of immunity post infection/vaccination.
4) No seasonality. Covid spreads just as well in summer as winter.

If I was going to engineer a population-reducing virus with no escape, these 4 would be high on the list of desirable attributes. They simply messed up: it escaped before the lethality enhancement was complete.

I remember a conversation with my son shortly after his escalator speech. The reasons Trump gave for running, the hard-working people who had worked for him in the past who begged him to run as they were being financially devastated. My son asked, "How come I never heard that?"

My only answer was, "They don't want you to know."

find a local with a tow, pay cash, no huhu or drama required.

Well, when you're headed to work at 6 am, have a flat on the Interstate with several miles before the next exit, and have no idea what local to call, AAA is good to have. They replace batteries as well; they've done that for me 3 times.

This last time, though, the roving DOTD tow truck showed up behind me and swapped out my tire before AAA arrived.

168 Spot on, Fenelon. These billionaires believe, because of their money, they have the right to reorder society. To tinker with humanity to suit their narcissistic needs and wants. At these places hiring is pretty bottom-up. And they almost universally promote from within. Once the rot sets in, it's difficult to fix.

We need more productivity meetings. About productivity. At least one a week....um day. Yeah, that'll get more work done. Bring your best ideas and be ready to blue sky them. Don't be afraid to think outside the box, unless the idea is stupid. Then we will all stare at you like you lit a fart.

Former senior FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith pleaded guilty to forgery in getting that FISA warrant against Carter Page so the FBI could spy on the Trump organization. Clinesmith faced a harsh penalty — his law license was suspended. But that was then, and this is now. Clinesmith has been restored to “good standing” and has his license to practice law back.”

The former employees of Trump were in the building trades. When our Senate granted China 'permanent' most favored trade status USA manufacturing facilities closed, one after another, in the end nearly 5,000. Very little need for new construction.

Trump identified the problem - China - and for that he is hated.

188 "GE discovered this little phenomenon way back when. They increased lighting and productivity went up. They decreased lighting and productivity went up. They painted the walls purple and productivity went up. They painted the walls black and productivity went up. In the end they discovered the truth, that the employees being aware that productivity was being measured caused them to work harder."

It's called the "Hawthorn Effect", after the Western Electric plant in Hawthorn, Massachusetts. The company attempted to measure productivity by putting observers in work areas, only to find that adding the observers changed workers' behavior. It's sort of the psychological equivalent the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle: that attempting to observe a phenomenon alters it.

Moore's Law is Dead has been flowing the unfolding trainwreck around Arc, and it has been really pretty insane. It sounds like the head of the Arc division may have actually been lying to his own boss about what all has been going on with Arc, and the whole unit is under internal investigation. It is really wild stuff coming out.

Also hearing that the NDAs have gone out for Zen 4.
