Incompetent Diversity-Hire Gay Mayor Pete Can't Do a Thing About Another Weekend of a Thousand-Plus Flight Cancellations, Nor the Ongoing Pilot Shortage

The important thing is that all those cancelled flights mean that less jet fuel was burned and less CO2 -- The Invisible Killer -- was released into the atmosphere.

Flight attendant union rep says US air travel is suffering a 'breakdown' and the 'job is not sustainable' for overstretched staff - as American travelers are hit by another weekend of travel chaos with more than 1,000 cancelations

More than 1,000 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled or delayed over the weekend as America's summer of travel chaos continued

As many as 912 flights were canceled as of 8 p.m. Sunday and thousands delayed
US flight attendant Allie Malis, who is also a government affairs representative, says the unpredictable schedules caused by cancellations and delays is tough

This weekend's mayhem comes as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has proposed expanding the circumstances in which travelers can claim refunds

Oh, he can't do anything to address the problem, but he can go beyond his actual powers to compel private businesses to issue refunds. So he can play Tyrant to impose a Band-Aid solution, huh?

US air travel is suffering a 'breakdown' and the 'job is not sustainable' for overstretched staff, a flight attendant union rep warns as American travelers are hit by another weekend of travel chaos with more than 1,000 cancelations.

America's airport nightmares continued on Friday as thunderstorms on the East Coast halted thousands of planes.

According to FlightAware, which tracks the status of flights around the world, 1,142 flights within, into or out of the United States were called off on Friday, while 3,944 flights were delayed.

Cancellations due to storms are to be expected -- but this keeps happening.

...

US flight attendant Allie Malis, who is also the government affairs representative at the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, a union representing American Airlines air crew, told CNN Travel her thoughts on the chaos.

'There's some kind of breakdown happening that I believe should be preventable,' Malis said.

She described 'uncomfortable' situations where crew members, having been delayed on incoming flights, would find themselves sprinting through the airport to make their next flight.

'Sometimes the passengers are cheering that you're arriving because it means their plane's going to go, or even that they're upset -- they think it's your fault that the flight has been delayed when you can't work two flights at once, although I'm sure the airlines wish we could,' Malis said.

Many airlines cut back and have operated with a skeleton staff for the better part of the last two years due to the pandemic. But now that travel demand is back, the airline industry is struggling to keep up.

Let's talk about that.

Karol Markowicz made a very good point in June: The airlines received $50 billion during the pandemic to keep paying their staffs, even though there was little air travel.

The airlines took this money... and then promptly began shedding staff.

If you've flown recently, or attempted to, it might have gone something like this: Your 1 p.m. flight became a 5 p.m. flight that became a midnight flight before being summarily canceled. No explanation is given. The next flights out are already fully booked, but they have a middle seat with two stopovers leaving next week if that still works for you.

...

According to FlightAware, a website that tracks flight cancellations and delays, there were 1,629 delays and 631 cancellations "within, into, or out of the United States" just Sunday. This was only by noon. Cancellations and delays become more likely as the day progresses.

Why are these frequent delays happening? Airlines cite post-pandemic demand being high. That's probably true, but people are excitedly booking seats on flights that allegedly exist only to have them not exist when it's time to travel. That's not the fault of demand.

...

Then there's the pilot shortage. Why would there be a pilot shortage, the average flyer screams into the void. In one of the dumbest moves possible, pilots were encouraged to retire early to avoid being laid off during the pandemic.

But here is exactly where the poor performance of airlines becomes a bigger deal than just a business failing to deliver quality service to the customer. Throughout the last two years, airlines received more than $50 billion in pandemic relief money. Our money. Congress has tried to demand answers about how that money was spent, but just like all of their other boondoggles, they could not come up with any clear answers.

That money was meant to preserve jobs and save an industry. Pilots, pretty important to the whole flying thing, should never have been encouraged off the job. Instead, the industry is in disarray, staff were laid off anyway and the money is gone.

She also points out that pilots who refused to get vaccinated were fired.

Now, I know people who got PPP loans. Those loans have to be paid back... unless you followed the government's criteria, in which case the loans are forgiven.

The biggest criterion of PPP loan forgiveness was that you keep on your full staff and continue paying them. Basically PPP was given to businesses to keep paying staff.

If the airlines encouraged pilots to retire early to avoid being laid off, then they did not follow PPP rules, and should pay that $50 billion back.

I'm pretty sure, though, that airlines got a special stack of cash without the normal rules that every other non-Protected business was required to follow.

This is key. They fired people for not taking the experimental gene therapy shot that is proving to be dangerous and nearly worthless against the virus and now they don't have enough people to do the job.

Making matters worse is that the unions protect people who just refuse to show up because they didn't want to work that day or partied too hard the previous night.

It was stolen, just like the vast amounts of money fired out of the Washington Money Cannon in other areas. And it was "supposed" to be to protect workforce, but was that in the actual act? The airlines weren't PPP stuff, they got their own bailout. Was it actually a requirement to not lay those guys off? I doubt it.

So they fired people anyway and business was slow, then they fired people who stayed because they didn't want to get the shots, and now everything is fucked. Okay.

So why not rehire people? Why can't they recruit? Pay not good enough? Too many people left with a bitter taste in their mouths over how they were treated over the past two years, and so refuse? What gives. Can they not hire for some reason, or do they just not want to?

First flights of the day have nothing to back them up, other than mechanic issues. And crews are already there, they don’t have to fly in. But as the day progresses, weather and other delays build up and have a cascading effect on the entire network.

Except that a LOT of commercial pilots are also NG pilots. Not to mention that it's not so easy to just plug a C-130 pilot into the cockpit of an Airbus A320 without a shitton of training.

----

Yes, and no. As long as there aren't any serious problems, the big commercial planes can fly themselves. A few years ago I found a video on YouTube that showed a stewardess doing a simulated landing in an Airbus. So yeah, your C-130 pilot would probably be able to take-off and land no problem with minimal training.

The trouble is when things go wrong. Then a pilot needs to the proper safety training to know what to do. That's why the C-130 pilot would need extra training.

Bullshit. There were 744 hours last month (31 days). To have pulled in $21k gross, that implies 228.25 hours, which is is 31% of all the hours in the month. That's 7.4 hours per day, every day, with no days off. For just business days (21 of those last month), it's 11 hours per day.

This is by no means impossible, but for a piecework gig, it's extremely unlikely that the work pipeline was that consistent or that deep.

Bullshit. There were 744 hours last month (31 days). To have pulled in $21k gross, that implies 228.25 hours, which is is 31% of all the hours in the month. That's 7.4 hours per day, every day, with no days off. For just business days (21 of those last month), it's 11 hours per day.

Doing so in exchange for nothing would get the MAGA crowds demanding that Congress be sacked. To the extent they aren't, I mean.

Now, it's possible the Rats lose zero Senate seats, but wtf does that mean? That Biden can go from +20 to -20 approval but have the same number of seats? The problem with lying and stealing to win is that you either do it all the time, or get ready for the pendulum to swing back when you stop.

306 Interesting jwest thanks. $600 an hour definitely changes the calculus. If I fly the whole family somewhere that isn’t much more than buying commercial tickets.

I once had a gig with a regional bank tht had several jets used by their underwriters to visit potential clients. They did a lot of lending to farms and wanted to see the operations in person. Their policy was if there is a seat on a plane anyone in the company can jump on for free. And contractors like me were included. I’d go out of my way to catch a flight. They had the schedule online and I was like oh there is a Denver to Sarasota flight. I’ll catch a flight to Denver and hop on to Sarasota for a few days on the beach. Then coming back I’d find some other hop to get me close to home.

Flying private is heaven. Show up 10 mins before the flight, walk on the plane. Plane takes off.

Games like Microsoft Flight Simulator are considered the next best thing to actually being in a cockpit. And they have on-line play, where people from around the world all fly in the same (simulated) airspace. How do you manage all of that?

VATSIM is an application that connects you to a shared worldwide server filled with other people flying their simulated aircraft in computer airspace... and also has real people providing the ATC functions using real world procedures.

before 9/11 I flew a lot. It was common place for me to get dropped off out front by a cabbie and run to the gate and on the plane as the door was closing. I still flew a fair amount after 9/11 until the VID. Now I don't fly at all for any reason. Too much bs and unreliability. Video conference is sufficient.

You're talking about thousands of flights and tens of thousands of people, that you're trying to simulate. There is a big difference in intentionally not paying legitimately owed tax and having a different opinion on what the tax law is. Try calling the IRS to get a definitive answer on a question. They won't give you one and tell you you're on your own figuring it out. Also, with the IRS you're guilty until proven innocent. They can seize all your assets and there is nothing you can do about it.

Did I mention the loan forgiveness was tax free?

524 Has FERC, which was petitioned in the spring, approved more jet fuel to return to the pipelines? Also, the shortage of truck drivers impacts where fuel needs to be tanked to airports not on pipelines.

Some years ago, Delta bought the Monroe Energy Trainer Refinery in Marcus Hook, PA. Reportedly, about 20% of the refinery's production is jet fuel.

______

Asked earlier, where are they going to find all those new agents? They don't need numeracy, they just need to know how to shoot. So this is probably an inner city jobs program.

528 As someone who was just subjected to flying commercial

going out was 2+ hours late, and some people missed the flight because they couldn't get through security fast enough

coming back was an hour late, which the airline denied until the scheduled flight time, trying to claim that a plane that wasn't there was on time.

530 It's only air travel. I mean, it's not something important -- like IRS collections, where we could use another 87,000 agents tracking down granny's misapplied prescription deductions or something.

What's the worst that could happen by continually over-stressing a workforce that puts millions of planes, loaded 200 people at a time, into the air with tired staffers, pilots, and service crew?

Posted by: red speck at August 08, 2022 03:55 PM (gS3OW)

531 50 Firing pilots, cabin crew, ground workers... Basically destroying the capacity of airlines to operate at peak.

When most are unionized in the U.S., how and why? Wonder how U. S. Airline Labor Negotiations are going.

532 She also points out that pilots who refused to get vaccinated were fired.

And the ones who did get vaccinated are medically unfit to fly a plane.

536 Mayor Pete is staggeringly incompetent, but then again, it's not like he sticks out in the Biden administration.

What COULD he do? Well, he could accelerate training of new pilots - offer free scholarships, or even slightly reduce the number of hours necessary to become qualified. he could, temporarily, allow pilots over the age of 65 fly, assuming they pass a physical. That could potentially add 10,000 pilots to the total.

537 Hi all, long time lurker. I’m a 25 year United pilot. Refused the company jab mandate, was laid off with NO benefits for several months. Back now, but policy remains our a-hole Brandon-loving CEO can lay us all off anytime he wishes.Union is FECKLESS. Short pilots from the early retirement offered during the lockdowns, PLUS significant number pilots quit or retired under duress for the mandate. Now we have increase in long-term disability payments in 2022 compared to other years. Gee, I wonder why? Plus vaxxed pilots (that’s about 97%) continue to get covid. Duh.

538 BTW, I truly am sorry for the shitty service. Ashamed, even.

Posted by: Sasquatch at August 08, 2022 10:06 PM (pdkjy)

539 1) Anyone that refused to get vaccinated got fired
2) A shocking % of those that got vaccinated can no longer pass their physicals - myocarditis is the most common side effect of the vaccine
3) Many pilots died shortly after getting the vaccine

These flight cancellations are 100% vaccine related. That's why the "news" NEVER discusses why there have been 1000's of cancellations per week for months on end.
