The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

America (and the rest of the West) should be proud of the incredible work that we have done over the last two generations to clean up our mess. We didn't pay much attention to pollution: in the air, in the water, on the land, and then in the 1970s our country noticed something...we were breathing dirty air and looking at garbage-strewn landscapes and oil-slicked rivers.

And we did something about it. America is far cleaner than it was 50 years ago, yet our standard of living has improved, and our consumption of the very things that caused that pollution has skyrocketed. How can that be?

We drill for oil and gas with minimal disruption of the ecosystem, and even in less enlightened parts of the world the technology is from the West, so it is reasonably clean.

Yet the insanity of the politically-inspired push for a "green" earth has unintended consequences that may dwarf those of the beginnings of the fossil fuel revolution. Consequences that are not just ecological, but geopolitical.

Report: China Destroying Myanmar with Rare Earth Mining for 'Green' Energy

Chinese-owned companies in Myanmar are allegedly responsible for illegal mining operations that are destroying the natural landscape of Myanmar's border region with China, local miners of dysprosium and terbium -- two heavy rare earth minerals used in clean energy products and smart electronics -- told the organization Global Witness for a report published on Tuesday.

Giving the evil regime that currently controls China a near monopoly on "vital" raw materials is politically insane, but it isn't even being driven by market pressures, rather it is a top-down push that eliminate the natural progression of new technologies. That pretty much guarantees sub-optimal results, as products are rushed to market without the risk of failure that a robust market economy injects into the rollout of every new product.

Couple that with the catastrophic damage to our environment caused by things like destructive mining for rare materials and the looming problems with the inability to recycle the huge quantities of battery waste, wind farm waste, and all of the other technologies associated with the "Green Revolution," and we have the distinct possibility that the earth is going to be a much dirtier place in another generation.

I'll take an oil pipeline running past my house any day over a bird-killing wind farm that is loud and ugly. I'll take an automobile powered with an internal combustion engine -- that burns amazingly clean -- any day over an electric vehicle with much less range, much more long-term maintenance costs, and the uncertainty of dealing with the significant amount of pollution it creates during manufacture and at the end of its service life.

If a free market economy, with the invisible hand of millions of decisions each day, decides that this vaunted "green revolution" is a good idea, then let it work its magic and create one. But doing this by government fiat is a guarantee that we will get the worst of all possible options.

I know that the EV vs. IC discussions are turning into the new version of longbows vs. crossbows, but it's pretty clear that if you want to buy a car that will protect the environment, you're much better off buying a used IC car than a new IC or an EV. If you want a car that doesn't emit nasty particulates and CO, an EV is just fine, although ICs have gotten a lot better.

YMMV, however.

An orchestra is on tour when the conductor is taken ill and rushed to the hospital.
No other conductor is available for a few weeks, but the first violist volunteers to conduct, as he's been with the orchestra for years and knows the score.
Management agrees to this and he fills in until a new conductor arrives.
Next concert, he returns to his chair.
The second violist says "Hey, dude! Where've you been?"

29 A couple of points:

Our environment was cleaned up as a result of capitalism. The myth that environmentalism and capitalism cannot co-exist has been disproved. Capitalism is based on efficiency and pollution is a symptom of inefficiency.

Leftists embrace environmentalism, but not because they want to save the environment. They want to eliminate the middle class. That's what the Green New Deal is all about. Controlling the population, not the environment. The middle class is the best antidote to socialism. It is the enemy of communism. They use environmentalism to advance communism, not the environment.

60 Nobody wants a bad environment. As CBD pointed out we have made massive strides towards doing better and technology will only get better as we go along. The problem is that the people pushing for this want to use it to socially engineer our way of life. They want to hamstring western nations, lifestyle and economy, mainly the U.S. They don't give a shit if it's some strip mine in Burma or that China is a cesspool. They don't have to see it. They claim it's global but if some slave in China or elsewhere is doing their dirty work, meh. It's not global climate and the enviroment they are worried about.

62 One of the biggest and most destructive rackets are all these new, incredibly inefficient and land-destroying "solar farms."

They have the worst footprint-to-power generation ratio of any type of power generation, and they gobble up fallow farmland (that is perversely stressed to sell by outrageous property taxes). Basically they despoil the countryside in the name of "green" --and all the while subsidized by corrupt /crony government give aways to friends/family/donors of politicians (particularly in my beloved Upstate New York).

But again "green" so all unquestionably good and virtuous to most not paying close attention, and not living nearby to any of these hideous chancres on the landscape.

If they actually want to generate electricity efficiently and with less pollution they should build some nuclear reactors. Especially the new, smaller ones are ideal which can generate a ton of power, and yet are small enough so that there is essentially zero chance of anything getting out of hand to cause any major event.

I'm actually working with some people in one locality to try to stop one of these monstrosities. Yes it's NIMBY but sometimes that's all one can do.

Bullshit reinforces itself. People who accept Bullshit will believe ever increasing amounts of Bullshit. These folks are known as Progressives.

It was set-up as a slalom of cones, through which they had to crawl on all fours as fast as they could -- one after another.

Believe it or not, have never looked up the origin of that term until just now -- and found this image (I guess it was also referred to as "24 bends") and now I understand why:

177 The other thing the enviros demonstrate is complete magical thinking.

The Usual Suspects are opposing the attempts of the Oregon Department of Transportation to fix the worst bottleneck on the entire length of I-5 in Central Portland by widening the freeway for a couple of miles.

The Usual Suspects refer to this as "climate arson", and literally state that there will be more forest fires in Oregon if the freeway is widened.

Even if you believe in AGW, if the whole state of Oregon ceased producing CO2, it would not have any measurable effect on world temperature. Not even rounding error.

You see this time and time again - enviros announcing that one project or another will "kill the planet".

Meanwhile, China puts out more CO2 than the US and the European Union combined, which is never acknowledged. It's what some random American state does or does not do that will determine future world temperature.

And it wasn't due to drought. It was because of China's hydroelectric dams buggering up all of the water supply for their own use.

The CCP just plain doesn't give a shit about anyone's suffering if they have something to gain by carrying out a set of plans that will benefit them -- no matter what NPR or Thomas Friedman or Nancy Pelosi might say on their behalf.

There a proposal to build a lithium mine in rural Northern Nevada, in one of the most desolate spots in the United States. Lithium is a key material for making "green" batteries.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that China was covertly funding efforts to block the mine, much as Russia has covertly funded environmental organizations to stop oil development in the United States.

220 I'll take an oil pipeline running past my house any day over a bird-killing wind farm that is loud and ugly. I'll take an automobile powered with an internal combustion engine -- that burns amazingly clean -- any day over an electric vehicle with much less range, much more long-term maintenance costs, and the uncertainty of dealing with the significant amount of pollution it creates during manufacture and at the end of its service life.
++++
AWFLs take the opposite. Those windmills are beautiful (so long as they're somewhere else), the pipeline is nasty. The gas engine is nasty, the electric car is friendly and green.

The reason, in essence, is NIMBYism. Pollution in Myanmar or Red China isn't pollution, because it's not near her and she will never see, touch, smell or breathe it. Slave labor in Africa or Asia isn't slave labor, because she doesn't know any of the slaves and never sees them at her house. She knows, though, that her electric car (or the one she wants) doesn't make any exhaust, but her neighbor's gas-powered car does, to say nothing of the cars that rubes closer to the main city drive. Not in her back yard, CBD. None of it has any place in her back yard.

226 Not really related to the Green Energy movement, but to environmentalism in general.

Here in Commiefornia, a law was passed that fast food windows are not allowed to give out "single serve" items (plastic utensils, sauce packets, straws, etc.) unless they are requested. It used to be just sit-down restaurants that had to wait for their patrons to ask for a straw before they were furnished. Anyway, if you don't remember to ask for a straw, fork or ketchup/catsup, etc. you won't get any, but the food bag will be stuffed with 87 napkins.

This was all due to some stupid kid pulling stats out of their ass about sea turtles choking on plastic straws or something. The kid even admitted that they made it all up, but that didn't stop erf-warrioz from running with it. While at the same time, all manner of public spaces are still strewn with disposable masks, but we're not supposed to talk about that.

232 Well done, CBD. This push to convert our entire energy system to solar, wind, battery (note my lack of calling it green), if fully adopted, will fail and when that happens, mostly likely sooner, the global balance of power will shift to the Chicoms. The Chicoms know this and are actively working to dominate this global power shift.

The West if it goes down this path, will effectively, after hollowing out and shrinking its economies due to a dominant use of renewables, and the concurrent collapse of the US dollar, will effectively become a Chicom colony. The amount of unnecessary human misery that will result from this collapse will be measured in the millions.

I do lean towards thinking those at the top of pile pushing this know this too and see in it a path to unbridled domestic political power that benefits the annointed oligarchy, the California model writ large and deep. There is no rational basis or technological foundation for this headlong push for 100% renewables. It is a pathological religious movement, and you can depend on, if this change comes to pass, that it will come with its own inquisition. Welcome to the brave new future and party like its 1399 again.

There are shockingly few straight cinematic adaptations of King Lear. There's a Soviet one that I've never been able to track down and...that's about it. Aside from some small BBC type things set in minimalist sets that are essentially just filmed plays (Ian Holm was in one), that's about it.

You have to go outside of the straight adaptation to something like Kurosawa's Ran to get something close.

It's always a slog. Studied English in college, and Shakespeare and Chaucer were always tough going. I'd find that it's almost like those 3D pics that you have to stare at for awhile until your eyes get fatigued to finally see the image. You have to read a chapter or two of Shakespeare and Chaucer to finally get into the flow where it begins to sound something like a familiar language, and then go back and pick up what you missed at the beginning.

It pisses me off to no end. Single-use plastics are not actually all that bad environmentally (grocery bags and films, especially) and there is a huge, crucial upshot to using them. Few detractors realize that single-use plastics are a huge component in public health.

Our food is delivered to us cleanly thanks to single-use plastics. Crossover contamination is reduced or eliminated thanks to single-use plastics. The shelf life of fresh foods is extended thanks to single-use plastics. They are critical to our highly-sanitary, highly-protected food supply chain all the way down to the bag you get at checkout. They are critical in medicine for the same reasons. They are also vital for the disposal end. We wrap our trash in single-use plastics, too - keeping our homes and environment clean and sanitary.

338 I found an interesting comment regarding the British people. By and large, they respect Shakespeare but adore Dickens. That might also play into why a lot of people do not like Shakespeare's plays here. Most of the main plots are not addressed to ordinary folks because Shakespeare was playing to his audiences and patrons. Dickens, on the other hand, writing when literacy was more established, sold his books to the people and his books reflected his audience.

I also believe that far too many teachers and professors teaching Shakespeare and literature in general skew those classes toward their tastes. That is especially true for education since the 60's in k-12 through college. If you have a gifted teacher, even the old Greek plays can come to life but it requires someone able to set context of how the play was written and performed objectively and not subjectively. The Durands, in their histories of civilization books, actually do a stellar overview of the arts in each period for the Western countries including the theater and literature. They place these in the contexts of the time and place of the artists' creation of their works.

359 Nuclear power plants are coming. Few people here doubt that claim and normally I would too. What a lot of people are missing is the big push at science magazine/web sites that were once not friendly to nuclear energy now selling it as "green and clean". Doubters would be wise to actually exercise some intellectual curiosity and search this out. Whats more is the billionaires pushing it, Gates and Buffet. People can go "pshaaaw thats BS, never happen" all you want, but the day is coming when the majority of the environmental/green movement does a complete flip on nuclear energy. Gates and Buffet heavily invested through TerraPower and PacifiCorp in nuclear and also heavily invested in lithium extraction/production, especially in SoCal/Salton Sea area. On my Facebook page I am inundated with nuclear is green propaganda because of pages I follow energy industry related. Too much to ignore plus actions being taken by suspicious players funding and pushing it that are lefties. Even these dopes know solar and wind ain't enough to power a grid for their EV wet dream. It's really a fascinating tale - it was written by a committee of the leading theological scholars from all of the denominations existing in England at the time, done because the existing english language translations at the time has some notorious faults in them. What is said about the KJV is that while it wasn't perfect, and some later translations are technically more accurate, the KJV managed to capture the sense of poetry in the original Hebrew that no other attempt has ever come close to doing.

I'm looking into the news and it looks like the inscriptions are things like "Head and Leader of the Heavenly Messengers" (which would refer to Peter) from the Byzantines. So strong evidence that the ancient Church believed it to be his house(and they built a church there), but not quite direct proof.

419 Here is interesting news for the few of you who survived the killer heat waves across the country from beginning to end of July. From the official NOAA US climate report:

July 2022

The average temperature across the contiguous U.S. last month was 76.4 degrees F (2.8 degrees above average), making July 2022 the third-hottest July in the 128-year climate record. Only July 1936 (first) and July 2012 (second) were hotter.

This is why the Climate Thugs are screaming today about how hot it is in the Arctic. They don't want to tell what is bad news for them after screaming about killer US temperatures last month.

May I suggest this bias to teaching the established classicals is in part due to inertia (this is how it is done), and because they are a pinnacle literary achievement. I know from first hand experience that "a gifted teacher, even the old Greek plays can come to life", though in my case it was a HS semester spent studying 78 records from 20s, 30s, and 40s from the musical, literature, and cultural perspectives. The intimation that it occurred during an era of slavery. The movie carefully blurs that distinction so it could have been placed in antebellum times or post Civil War sharecropping times.

Regardless, author Joel Chandler Harris has also been cancelled for being a person of his times. It is a shame because Harris is one of the few archivists of a forgotten language and oral history of folk tales from Africa. I would put this on par with the Library of Congress early blues recording project.

Stands to reason that the Byzantines had a reason to feel that house had been something special.
