New York Times Publishes Op-Ed From 25-Year-Old Female "Economics Influencer" Absolving Biden of Blame for Economy and Instead Putting It Where It Belongs:
On the "Bad Vibes" The Public Is Putting Out About the Economy, Man

She says we're not in a recession.

Just a "vibe-cession."

And that's a real quote. That's a real thing the New York Time published as noteworthy economic commentary.

We are Serious Journalists. Please pay us money and give us Prizes now!

vibes.jpg

Yes, this just sounds right to me.

Fox News reports on the New York Times' foray into the exciting new field of economic orgone energy.

A New York Times guest essay is taking heat for its insistence that "weird vibes in the economy" are setting the stage for a recession as economists and consumers alike say the recession has already arrived.

"The vibes in the economy are... weird. That weirdness has real effects," author Kyla Scanlon wrote Thursday.

Scanlon claimed the U.S. economy is less focused on reality and more focused on interpretations of reality, including how consumers react in response to talks of economic decline.

"When policy is more focused on indicators that might not fully reflect reality, and not on the silly and messy people whom the policy is meant to serve, we enter dangerous territory," she wrote.

"There is no recession yet. Right now we are in a 'vibe-cession' of sorts -- a period of declining expectations that people are feeling based on both real-world worries and past experiences."

Scanlon also blamed "noise" about the economy for the negative assumptions American consumers have formed, writing the economy is a testament of what people do and, when too much bad air conquers the circulating narrative, it can lead people to "expect the worst."

Despite indicators pointing to a recession, Scanlon claimed the recession has yet to arrive, and people are simply fearing the worst is yet to come, writing, "What people expect can soon end up happening, and right now, with worsening data, many people's expectations have come together to expect a recession. And those expectations could very well lead to one."

Scanlon's claims are true and novel. Except the true parts are not novel, and the novel parts are not true.

The true parts are the obvious, Basic Bitch economics parts. Yes, obviously, there is a consumer sentiment factor in mass economic behavior. That's why we measure consumer sentiment in the Consumer Sentiment Index.

People's feelings about the economy do substantially impact what the economy does. Or: People's feelings about the economy substantially make up the economy.

If people have the feeling the economy is strong, the economy will tend to be strong. If people have the feeling the economy is weak, the economy will tend to be weak.

This is all true... and extremely obvious.

Not worth saying, not worth printing, and not worth reading.

The novel part of her claim -- the part which is not true -- is her apparent belief and her implication that because some of the economy is based on feeling and sentiment, all of it is, and if we just had better feelings and sentiment, the economy would be better.

The vibes in the economy are ... weird. That weirdness has real effects. A recent study found that broader vibes do indeed drive what people do, with media narratives about the economy accounting for 42 percent of the fall in consumer sentiment in the second half of 2021.

Indicators like G.D.P. are important, but much of the time, the root of economic problems lies with expectations. When we think about things like inflation, financial conditions and monetary policy, it's best to frame them through people. And people are, of course, silly and messy. Far too many economists and experts forget that the economy is really a bunch of people "peopling" around and trying to make sense of this world.

Literally no economist or expert forgets that. I think it's just that that's one of the few economic ideas you're capable of understanding so you're pointing to it proudly saying, "Hey, I understand this part! Let's not forget about this!"

They're not forgetting about that.

It's just they also know much more than that.

Again: You're Basic Bitch. You'd have to struggle to be Mid.

When policy is more focused on indicators that might not fully reflect reality, and not on the silly and messy people whom the policy is meant to serve, we enter dangerous territory.

I think this is a Taylor Swift lyric. It's a diss track about Katie Perry.

There is no recession yet.

Yes there is.

Right now we are in a "vibe-cession" of sorts -- a period of declining expectations that people are feeling based on both real-world worries and past experiences.

It's not just about worries. There are objective facts involved here.

Things are off. And if they don't improve, we will have to worry about more than bad vibes.

She seems to forget -- or, rather, wants the reader to forget -- that the public hasn't just come by its "vibes" about the economy randomly, or irrationally. The public doesn't just have "bad vibes" about its purchasing power having declined because they just are in a funk. No, they have these "bad vibes" about declining purchasing power because their purchasing power has objectively declined, due to the fact that Biden pumped a trillion of new dollars into the economy and reduced the value of the dollars in people's pockets.

So then people get the "bad vibes" that food and fuel costs more, and that their paychecks are not keeping pace with the rising cost of living. This "bad vibe" just happens to track with objective economic reality.

People then have the "bad vibe" that maybe they should scale back unnecessary purchases because they don't have as much money as they used to. By spending less money, it is true, they are in fact contributing to an economic downturn -- but it's not just their "bad vibes," arising out of nowhere, that has produced this outcome. Their "bad vibes," their belief that they don't have as much money as they once did and their consequent lack of confidence about future economic security, is a very rational feeling based on, again, the objective economic reality that Biden has presented them with.

She writes as though if we all just believed that the economy were doing great, we could avoid the "bad vibes" that are causing this recession.

But the "bad vibes" aren't the first movers in this recessionary chain of events. It's the bad economic conditions which in turn are causing the "bad vibes" which in turn drive people to reduce spending which in turn weakens economic conditions further.

Dispelling the "bad vibes" from one's mind will not suddenly restore the money-to-goods scales to balanced.

She really, really, really is smitten with the Day Two of Economics idea that market psychology is part of economics and so is insisting that market psychology is all of economics.

It's not. Market psychology, like basic human psychology, is driven by tangible real-world factors. People don't just decide "Today I am happy." Usually there are real-world reasons pushing them down a happy path.

Why doesn't she just say what she really wants to say? This economy is perfect, except that Republican Witches are casting Spells of Binding on the economy. And the Good Witches have to cast Counter-Spells of Protection.

Now, I don't know this particular 25-year-old "economic influencer's" oeuvre, or why the Times was so taken with the expertise of a girl who had so expertly digested a single chapter in the first part of an economic textbook.

I imagine the reasons include things such as: The continuing need to deny that the recession which is obviously happening is happening at all, the need to provide happytalk pablum to stressed-and-depressed progressives giving up watching leftwing news channels and reading leftwing newspapers.

It could also be trying to give "Modern Monetary Theory" one last shock from the cardiac paddles. Modern Monetary Theory was progressives' and socialists' dream theory, the theory that said the government could print as much money as it liked and it would have no negative inflationary effect at all.* Why, the government could literally print us each a million dollars, and we'd just be millionaires.

What about inflation? There wouldn't be inflation! Because we wouldn't want there to be inflation!

Maybe this is the New York Times' attempting to live the motto of the Rocky Horror Picture Show: If you can dream it, you can live it. If we all just mutually agree "There is no spoon" -- "There is no inflation" -- "There are no bad vibes" -- we can wish this Modern Monetary Theory Luxury Socialism economy dream back into reality.

So come on, kids! If you want this economy to come back to life, say "I do believe in fairies, I do believe in fairies, I do believe in fairies," and clap three times!

141 How long until they change the definition of "vibe-cession"?
Posted by: Surfperch

LO-f'n-L.

* Alex in Exile says that's not what Modern Monetary Theory says. He says the claim is that only inflation should restrain government spending.

18 Don't be silly. Expectations have almost no effect on the economy, mostly because they are so short lived. The news cycle is constantly updating expectations and if bad things aren't actually happening, then "bad" expectations will revert to the mean. Bad economic events do not happen from bad expectations, bad expectations are formed from bad economic events.

82 What the darling little ding dong doesn't understand is that consumer and business confidence is what makes economies grow. And when confidence is lost recessions occur. Now whose fault is that consumers have lost confidence?

Who can trust the vershluggener "experts" working in Slow Joe's Klown Kar Kakistocracy? You look at those lying louts and ladies who want to tell you that men can get pregnant and say, "Hunh?" You look at General Milli Vanilli who tells you that white supremacy is the biggest terrorist threat in the country? Who can have confidence in such a bunch of prevaricating poltroons? Well Bunky--not me.

88 Weakening economic conditions due to negative expectations isn't a self-feeding spiral either. The decline in (real) asset prices and wages eventually creates investment opportunities that send things in the other direction.

Inflation can be though. If everyone expects X% increases year over year, they build it into all their pricing (and wage demands) and so it becomes self-fulfilling.

171 There is no way, in their minds, that dumping Trump could not have led, and be leading, to something better, even glorious and transcendent. If reality is intruding, it is no doubt the fault of the bitter clingers and revanchists and their rearguard actions and bad energies. The fact that they (or we) still even exist and breathe the same air is a kind of intolerable cosmic contamination.

Overwhelming, incontrovertible reality will only lead to Biden being blamed and sacrificed, for not being "courageous" and radical enough (i.e., meaning insufficiently censorious and fascist, of course). This will signal the emergence of someone closer to the Lenin model. It never goes in any another direction.

One thing is sure -- it cannot be their fault. It is never their fault.

The U.S. labor market remained red-hot in July despite expectations job growth would cool MSN Here were the key numbers from the report, compared to economist estimates compiled by Bloomberg:

_ Non-farm payrolls: +528,000 vs. +250,000
_ Unemployment rate: 3.5% vs. 3.6%
_ Average hourly earnings, month-over-month: +0.5% vs. +0.4%
_ Average hourly earnings, year-over-year: +5.2% vs. +4.9%

When was the last time you saw numbers like that?

Is Inflation Hurting Minorities Disproportionately?

"With the rising cost of goods, thefts of goods previously amounting to less than $950 are now turning some shoplifting trips into criminal activities," said UCSB Diversity Professor Bittarious Clinger.

"White people are able to work multiple jobs and offset the consequences for the rising costs. But for historically disadvantaged communities of color, there is no option to sign up for a second welfare check.

Many economically disadvantaged people are being forced to choose between stealing lower cost items or face criminal charges from the systemically racist court systems. We are calling upon Governor Newsom to raise theft allowance levels to $2000 during these trying times."

Any taxation is distortionary. MMT arguing that government prints money and then removes it via taxation versus the classic model of taxation -> spending is a bit like geocentrism versus heliocentrism: you're arguing about the frame of reference for your model when it may not even matter for the question at hand.

Even under MMT, you still have to keep taxation in line with spending or else you face massive inflation. The real problem, IMHO, is that they're generally way too overconfident in their ability to spend money in ways that would increase economic output enough to match the growth of the money supply.

Yes it misses the crux of the issue. Whether it's 10 quatloos, 100 yen, or 1 euro, government spending financed by any means is redirecting resources to generally less productive ends. If those resources were deployed normally instead of by government mandate the country would be richer.

This is why we see the big boom after WW2, there's a sudden increase in the availability of resources for private (economically more efficient) ends. The simple macro-econ aggregate demand model misses this by focusing on spending and currency.

iirc, they say MMT allows "infinite" printing (QE I presume, so no interest payments) ... and if inflation gets too hot, they can raise taxes so people have less to spend (throttling back sales).

Great, they will throttle the people, but BigGov still gets billions for military, welfare, Medicaid, etc.

BUT that is kinda why we had not seen higher price inflation for decades, imo the wealth was in markets and financial holdings -- as millionaires became billionaires, they were not buying 1000 times as many refrigerators or consumer goods. But now they are creating shortages ... throttling via gas prices and wars that cut off trade. (All the Firings for Woke Cause might be a factor in shortages as well, idk ... but the Woke bloat at Google was noticed)

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at August 05, 2022 03:36 PM (b2nrj)

The fear for gov economists is the inertia of deflation: if people think prices will be lower tomorrow, they'll delay spending, which in turn forces produces to lower prices, which encourages consumers to delay more spending, etc. Hence why the Fed tries to shoot for 2% inflation: enough that the risk of a deflationary spiral is minimal, but not enough to screw with the ability of people to make long-term plans.

410 MMT says that gov prints money to pay for goods and services it needs, and then uses taxation to drive the demand for those dollars as well as remove them from circulation. You can print "infinite" dollars only to the extent that you're willing to tax to remove them later.

Right, the Obama administration actually followed this pretty well but couldn't get the tax increases they wanted. But they managed to spend INSANELY huge amounts of money through QE that vanished into basically FDIC lock boxes so it didn't create expected inflation.

You don't hear that argument anymore for some reason.

That was the multiplier effect from investment in the economy which was inferred from Keynesian economics. Basically what Alex said above for MMT, this group of geniuses believe (or find it useful to believe) that government can do a better job with printed borrowed money to boost the economy via investing in 'green' companies via subsidies than a laissez faire approach would. They are arguing that Supply creates Demand and by gum if it doesn't--we will eliminate any substitutes such as gas powered vehicles for those green goods like electric cars.

State level economics because it is seldom reported, does even less. Low info voters perceive the local economy as a proxy for the national economy by noting when shifts are cut back at the factories, prices rise, businesses close, house prices decline, and so on.

He also points out that the warmest oceans/waters around Indonesia have the most corals, so it is clearly NOT global warming that is killing reefs (to the extent some are being damaged). Cold kills corals.

It's basically using any excuse to do what they've already wanted to do: spend like drunken sailors, or a Beverly Hills teenager with daddy's credit card.

The funny part is that under something like MMT, a lot of what they want wouldn't be permissible. Most proponents advocate getting rid of all welfare, for example, in exchange for some sort of guaranteed jobs program. You can't just spend money willy-nilly. But, like I said, they over-estimate the positive impact of a lot of spending proposals.

The implication of a collapse seems to be that our currency would devalue a lot and we'd be shipping a ton of goods overseas as people rush to turn their USD and US debt into something valuable. I'm estimating loss of reserve currency status as being akin to a 10-20% sudden loss of gdp in standard of living(though the increased exports will show as increasing gdp), likely on the lower end of that.

555 You know there is actually a technical term for "bad vibes" it's called psychology of the market, and in real economics it's intensely studied, analytically explained, the subject of predictions, but never ***blamed*** for a bad economy, as it is generally respected because it is ***understood*** to be people acting in their own best financial interests by predicting economic trends given the available information they have and their relative understanding of the economic situation. It only strongly negatively effects the economy if *something else is seriously wrong* like personal debt/lack of savings, financial over leveraging etc, that allows that pessimistic psychology to feed into a self amplifying loop of worsening conditions. Otherwise "consumer sentiment" is just a blip on the economic radar that lasts a few months then relents when folks see nothing real bad is gonna happen.

But it doesn't take much to move things. When the Republicans take Congress, the economy will pick up for a few months, even before they get inaugurated, because people foolishly believe that the Republicans care.

Well, unless the Dems just go YOLO with amnesty and such during the lame duck session.

Yeah I was surprised. I am waiting for the quit report to come out. Labor participation rate fell. Trending to go below 62% again. Most of this is just job churn. I'm certain there is some seasonal adjustment being thrown in. I expect a revision downward, but still a decent number. I still am of the belief that the BLS legitimately tries to do good work. But in Dem admins, they almost always revise down.

I will be most interested in the PPI coming out next week. If it stays over 11, that means inflation is still headed up; and the trickle of layoffs we are beginning to hear about will get a bit stronger.

In theory we've got a lot of room to replace make-work activity with productive labor. Tends to only run in the direction of more make-work jobs until things collapse though.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at August 05, 2022 04:13 PM (b2nrj)

573 The implication of a collapse seems to be that our currency would devalue a lot and we'd be shipping a ton of goods overseas as people rush to turn their USD and US debt into something valuable. I'm estimating loss of reserve currency status as being akin to a 10-20% sudden loss of gdp in standard of living(though the increased exports will show as increasing gdp), likely on the lower end of that.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at August 05, 2022 04:09 PM (b2nrj)

I think that a lot of the money that went out of the country over the past decades was used to prop up other economies and now it's starting to flood back into the US as those bubbles burst. See: Chinese purchases of US real estate. It's going to hurt like hell for a few years.

Most people are unaware that money has no intrinsic value, that its just a coupon for people to bypass the complexities of barter.

He ended the "2 for 1" rule that required agencies to cut two regulations for every new regulation implemented. From where I sit (gov agency) we haven't seen a whole lot of new regs. That said, a lot of it is going to be how current regulations are applied. For example, cancelling the Keystone Pipeline and oil exploration. I would imagine that companies are preparing for stricter interpretation of environmental regulations as well.

586 "You can print "infinite" dollars only to the extent that you're willing to tax to remove them later." Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile

OK, but they don't remove all of them, inflation "removes" a lot of them. Or not, I guess we will see ... so far they are just spending trillions (and the debt is being "paid off" via inflation ... paying it back in dollars worth half as much)

Taxing people can take money out of circulation I guess, but it also makes people poorer. Either way, it throttles spending.
