Among other things, this was the movie that inspired Julian Fellowes to create Gosford Park and it's offspring, Downton Abbey. Rules of the Game created that genre, but it has a depth to it that none of those later films did. Although parts of it can be quite comical, there is an incredible sadness hanging over it as you realize that *everyone*, more or less, knows what's coming. And yet they just play games and amuse themselves and wait for it to come, while doing nothing to prepare. And again, Renoir made this in 1939. Try listening to Danes speak Danish. It's like a constant struggle to keep their tongues from clogging up their throats.
Posted by: Chuck Martel at August 05, 2022 10:00 AM (fs1hN) Norwegian and Danish used to be the same language, when they were part of the same country. They broke apart about the time of the Napoleonic wars, I think. I had a Danish friend who linked me a video popular in both those countries, made by a Norwegian. He demonstrated that modern Danish is simply what Norwegian sounds like when spoken by someone who's incredibly drunk. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 05, 2022 10:10 AM (trdmm) 223

You know, everyone talked about Cruz grilling Wray yesterday, but no one but DU talked about the REAL revelations! And they manage to get all the talking point angles in!
Wray Admits The FBI Never Investigated Brett Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Tips The investigation was a fraud. The FBI collected the tips and then handed them to Trump as he ran the “investigation” into his Supreme Court nominee. If it chose to do so, the Senate could open an investigation into the sham investigation and the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh. MFer. This is why I despise the FBI. They were never an objective criminal agency. They just supported Republicans and their causes because it made life easier for them. They wanted Kavanaugh in for their assault on RvW. They got what they wanted. And now Roe is trashed. And now the people (even a festering turd of a state like Kansas!) are pushing back. Some sort of legitimacy needs to be installed. 1 of 2, About Norway's "elected king", mentioned yesterday:
Haakon VII (born Prince Carl of Denmark; 3 August 1872 - 21 September 1957) was the King of Norway from November 1905 until his death in September 1957. Originally a Danish prince, he was born in Copenhagen as the son of the future Frederick VIII of Denmark and Louise of Sweden. Prince Carl was educated at the Royal Danish Naval Academy and served in the Royal Danish Navy. After the 1905 dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway, Prince Carl was offered the Norwegian crown. Following a November plebiscite, he accepted the offer and was formally elected King of Norway by the Storting. He took the Old Norse name Haakon and ascended to the throne as Haakon VII, becoming the first independent Norwegian monarch since 1387.[1] Posted by: andycanuck (yikp0) at August 05, 2022 10:19 AM (yikp0) 261

2 of 2 about the plebiscite:
A referendum on retaining the monarchy or becoming a republic was held in Norway on 12 and 13 November 1905.[1] Voters were asked whether they approved of the Storting's decision to authorise the government to make the offer of the throne of the newly self-ruling country. The Storting had wanted to offer the throne to Prince Carl of Denmark, but the prince insisted that the Norwegian people have a chance to decide whether they wanted to retain a monarchy.[2] The proposal was approved by 78.9% of voters.[3] Following the referendum, the Storting formally offered the throne to Carl on 18 November; Carl accepted, assuming the throne as King Haakon VII. The new royal family arrived in Norway on 25 November. King Haakon and Queen Maud were crowned in a ceremony in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim on 22 June 1906.[4] Haakon became Norway's first separate monarch in 518 years. ========= The Romans do this to Italian. Of course, Italian is only really spoken by the Florentines. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, navigating the destiny machine with Fritz Lang at August 05, 2022 09:57 AM (LvTSG) ---- As a Roman I beg to differ. The lingo spoken in Toscana (not just Firenze) is strange. They tend to not pronounce the hard C sound (the K in English) and put in an H sound instead. Of course Italy is full of dialects. Almost every town has its own, a consequence of the country having been a bunch of city-states for centuries. Sicilians and Sardinians are almost unintelligible. Torinese is very Frenchie. Veneziano I don't understand at all. The Tuscany Italian is strange in that they tend not to pronounce the H sound. I think the French producers generally pick actors that are interesting to look at rather than classic beauties (Deneuve an exception). Audrey Tatou for example. A recent example is Garance Marrillier. Like most young women (who are not fat, tattoed, pierced and unnaturally hair dyed), attractive in her own way. But also interesting looking. YMMV

As a Roman I beg to differ.
