5 The problem is the chips are all made in Taiwan. Single point of failure is a bad idea. How do you transfer high-end chip manufacturing to continental North America without subsidizing it?

6 Howdy howdy.

Last day of my week of getting up far, far too early. I'm a little upset at how quickly I've gotten used to it, actually.

Posted by: rold at July 29, 2022 05:06 AM (1uTlv)

Remove absurd regulations.

Tax the hell out of imports.

Don't tax the hell out of domestic product.

You'd see dozens of chip fabs spring up across the lower 48 within six months.

8 Someone borrowed $10 million - unsecured, anonymous, and online - and created a fake transaction to drain funds from Nirvana before paying the loan back and running off with the stolen funds. Like paying with a cheque and closing your bank account before it can be cashed.

Geez, I can't understand much of what Pixy posts, but the whole bitcoin dealings has me totally confused.

Posted by: Bruce at July 29, 2022 05:10 AM (vd8XM)

9 Some people might consider "not taxing a thing" to be a subsidy of sorts, but that's an icky kind of thing to think, i think.

10 5 The problem is the chips are all made in Taiwan. Single point of failure is a bad idea. How do you transfer high-end chip manufacturing to continental North America without subsidizing it?

There are actually a lot of high-end chip factories in the US - Intel, Micron, and Texas Instruments for example - but yes, Taiwan is a huge part of the industry and vulnerable to the commie lunatics across the water.

The CHIPS Act was not the worst use of $50 billion, strategically and economically, so of course Congress added another $200 billion to it that will be wasted.

11 I'm not really up to speed on any of it, but i thought one of the driving forces behind Bitcoin was that it wasn't supposed to be stable. It was supposed to gleefully float in value based purely upon raw market forces. Trying to control the price of any cryptocurrency externally seems to be counterproductive.

26 Thought experiment:

Twitter comes out with some kind of subscription based "Twitter Plus", where for a monthly fee your account is completely unleashed and you can say or do whatever you like without getting shadow banned or twitter jailed. Even if you post something illegal (like an outright murder threat or whatever) they simply let law enforcement handle it. Then they can be as much of a racist fascist goon as they like for the unwashed plebes.

Yay or nay?

An old sailor superstition back from when sailing ships brought Cheetos in from South America. They would sink in a storm, and the only thing found from the wreck is Cheeto dust on the water marking the spot

98 I bought a box a couple years ago - and got the Sadz. No longer fried or whatever it was those devils did at the factory - they are "baked" now, and they are only a poor pathetic imitation or reflection of what they once were, the pinnacle of tasty snack junk food crackers.

Must be my taste buds. Nothing tastes the same. Or they are fkn everything up trying to be 'healthy.' I was looking for something the other day and nothing but GLUTEN FREE crap everywhere.

never understood that idea, at all ...

101 The problem is the chips are all made in Taiwan. Single point of failure is a bad idea. How do you transfer high-end chip manufacturing to continental North America without subsidizing it?

Grant the Taiwan engineers and their families instant US citizenship?

Why not? the former United States sure is lacking chip making talent.

106 I saw my first transgender TV ad. Some black guy in a Carmen Miranda dress prancing with spastic celebration over a brand of vitamin water drink.

107 Polyethylene glycol is antifreeze, right, soc?

Posted by: Eromero at July 29, 2022 07:28 AM (gktX6)

108 Yes, they can claim to more "healthy" - conveniently though, they also save considerably on cost, which I suspect is the real reason. Less calories, food is fuel, energy.

Fake fat, or alternatives, cause unfortunate incidents. I've had "Shit Boost Light Illuminated" warnings before, never in a wetsuit on a kayak though. Yeesh

111 Ethylene glycol is "antifreeze" used in autos. Toxic.

Propylene glycol is used in foods. Presumably not toxic. Do your own diligence, think I have that right.

Posted by: Common Tater at July 29, 2022 07:31 AM (2igD3)

112 no, Eromero, antifreeze is ethylene glycol, bigly poisonous ... polyethylene glycol is quite inert over a wide range of molecular weights, kind of waxy / fatty, and edible; also a vigorous laxative, it's the active ingredient in the gallon jug of 'cleanout solution' used for colonoscopy prep, etc.
it enjoyed a brief fad as a zero-calorie fat substitute in snack foods.

113 I wonder how many semi-conductor plants will decide that West Virginia is the optimal location, or else?

114 I have seen a bit of broadcast TV on this vacation. The commercials are so forced and stupid. Every family is mixed race, most women are fat. And all of the kids are below average.

117 107 Polyethylene glycol is used to keep moisture in, for example, tobacco, instead of using glycerol. As someone said below, it is not absorbed by the gut and attracts water so it is a good cleansing laxative for colonoscopy preparation.
