The Government, Media, Corporations and Institutions Constantly Lying to the Public Continue to Wonder Why The Public No Longer Trusts Them

chyronrecessiondenial.jpg

The non-recession -- which the cow-eyed imbecile says is just a "transition" from an economy fueled by fossil energy to a Mad Max style apocalypse not fueled by fossil energy (and can't wait to cut those campaign commercials!) -- hit another 40 year record for inflation, and the inflation continues accelerating, despite the large increases in interest rates.

Furthermore, consumer spending continues weakening, a warning that the recession, which is already here, may be on the way.

An inflation gauge that is closely tracked by the Federal Reserve jumped 6.8% in June from a year ago, the biggest increase in four decades, and leaving Americans with no relief from surging costs.

Friday's government figures underscored the persistence of the inflation that is eroding Americans' purchasing power, dimming their confidence in the economy and threatening Democrats in Congress in the run-up to the November midterm elections.

On a month-to-month basis, prices rose 1% from May to June, faster than the 0.6% rise from April to May and the biggest such jump since 2005.

A separate government report Friday reinforced the fact that the economy remains gripped by inflation pressures. A measure of employees' wages, excluding government workers, jumped 1.6% in the April-June quarter, matching a record high reached last fall. Higher wages can fuel inflation if companies pass their higher labor costs on to their customers, as they typically do.

The government also reported Friday that consumer spending managed to just outpace inflation last month, rising 0.1% from May to June after adjusting for price changes. Consumer spending, the main driver of the economy, has weakened in the face of high inflation. But for now, it's still helping fuel inflation, with demand still strong for services, ranging from airline tickets and hotel rooms to restaurant meals and autos.

Many retail and consumer goods chains, though, say inflation is squeezing shoppers and limiting how far their money goes -- a sign that consumer spending could further weaken.

...

Inflation has been rising so fast that despite the pay raises many workers have received, most consumers are falling behind the pace of cost-of-living expenses.

High inflation and interest rates are also hampering the U.S. economy, which shrank in the April-June quarter for a second straight quarter, intensifying fears that a recession is looming.

It's looming so much it is in fact already present.

Two quarters of declining growth meet an informal rule of thumb for when a recession begins...

You don't say?

...although robust hiring suggests that the economy still maintains pockets of strength and isn't yet in a downturn.

Sure, super robust hiring.

Glenn Reynolds has a wild theory about why people have this irrational distrust of government and other formerly trust institutions:

It's because they're not worthy of trust.

Why don't Americans trust the government and other institutions? Maybe it's because the government and other institutions aren't trustworthy.

There's certainly plenty of evidence for both the lack of trust and the lack of trustworthiness. And if the trend continues, it bodes poorly for America.

The news is bad on the lack of trust. A recent University of Chicago Institute of Politics poll found that a majority of Americans think that the government is "corrupt and rigged against people like me." Two-thirds of Republicans and independents felt that way, but things weren't much better among liberals, 51% of whom agreed. So this isn't the usual sour grapes from the party out of power -- it's a general sentiment.

Why do people feel that way? Well, that's a real poser, but I'm going to offer a suggestion: They feel that way because they've noticed that the government is corrupt and rigged against people like them.

Those in government live in a world of revolving doors and no consequences. Fail in protecting or serving the public? You'll likely get off scot-free and land in a cushy private-sector position after your "public service" is over. Then, next time your party is in power, you'll likely move back into another government position that will set you up for an even cushier private-sector job later.

Did you champion a policy that failed spectacularly, spread misery around the globe or got people killed? No matter! The chance that you'll face anything worse than a critical op-ed is tiny.

As Peggy Noonan says, our society is divided into the "protected" class, which makes policies, and the "unprotected" class that has to live with the policies and their consequences. Your kids may lose their jobs because of green-energy policies; the protected class' kids will find lucrative positions as green-energy consultants or private-equity partners. Inflation makes food and gas expensive? You'll feel it, but they will barely notice. War overseas? Their kids won't be the ones fighting.

And they've become shameless. Note this week's effort to redefine recession before Thursday's bad gross-domestic-product announcement. Previously, as investment expert Jeffrey Carter notes, a recession meant two consecutive quarters (six months) of economic decline. Now it means . . . something else.

What else? Whatever is convenient. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen went on TV and said that even if this quarter's numbers print negative (they did), it's not a recession because . . . well, just because. As Carter says, "She's wrong. She knows it. Plus, she told a pretty big fib for a political spin and didn't do it convincingly. "

When asked to define a recession, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre wouldn't be specific but said we're not in one. Or even in a "pre-recession," whatever that is.

Other administration mouthpieces claimed it won't count as a recession until the National Bureau of Economic Research pronounces it one, a year or more after the fact. (And conveniently after the midterms, too.)

wikipediaorwell.jpg

Tucker Carlson titled his opening monologue "Reimaging Recession," and documented the media and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) repeatedly defining a recession as two quarters of negative growth -- until two weeks ago, when the Great Reset-shen (as Instapundit called it) began.

He also assailed Biden's competency and branded the "press conference" -- really, the messaging coordination meeting with his staff in the various "news" bureaus -- one of the most bizarre he's ever seen.

18 The job market is also a diversion. When you dig down on the fundamentals it's clear that;
- Unemployment is back to pre COVID levels.
- A lot of the job gains are people taking second jobs
- Retired people are taking jobs because their fixed income isn't enough to live.

That's before we get to some of the local food bank numbers, which are greatly increased.

Actually there was a pretty important dialogue in APSR during the 70's over it in the aftermath of Watergate, Vietnam, Church Cmte, stagflation, etc. Using survey data, the question was whether the decline in trust in government would lead to revolution or not. At the time, a researcher Jack Citrin, found using additional survey responses for context, the lack of trust was for the people running the government but not the system itself. Thus, policy failures drove the lack of trust in government in survey responses in the 70's but not in the system itself.

We may now be looking at a failure in trust for the system itself including liberals. The divide and conquer strategy by the elites of both parties to engorge themselves at the public trough and leave everyone else by the wayside might just be excessive enough that average people have had it.

It's crazy. We are trying to work with a US company, a solid company, that was offering us a flat price to do a partial assembly on our product. It is not complex work at all but pretty high volume.

The price they are offering now is double what they were asking pre lockdown and they claim it is 100% because of the increased labor charges they are paying for pretty unskilled labor.

The wage price spiral will continue until alternative means of support (ie welfare and entitlements) are reduced in real value sufficiently to drive the reservation wage down enough to increase the labor supply. Most of what is consumed in any given year is produced by the existing work force, so a long-term decline in the labor force means a lower standard of living (offset potentially by advances in technology).

Many of those doctors may not be around much longer themselves as it appears the more shots of the vaxx, the worse it gets. Plus, we may see cancer deaths popping up in additional to cardiac deaths. THere is some suggestion in the data that the vaxx can revive past cancers into reactivation but it can take years for new cancers to pop up. That is why vaccines and medicines have such a long time line to approval is the risk of side effects.

To my mind, in 2024, we may be discussing the Vaxx as a major issue just as much as the economy. That is DJT's kryptonite right there as there is no doubt he not only funded it but also pushed it on people as a treatment post presidency.

Almost everytime I hear a story now of someone having massive health issues after previously being healthy I wonder if it's the result of getting one shot or more(I know people can get diseases having not had a shot (I did) but too much of this is happening. I did a kind of exchange of vows service for two young people (It wasn't the legal kind but they wanted to do it for his grandmother who was dying) and in the premarital discussions it came up about how much they wanted to have a family, She's a pediatrician and had several shots required by the hospital she works at. I hope to God they can indeed have a family after those Covid shots.

And they want to reduce the standard of living of the American working/middle class. They make no bones about this.

But...so the argument goes...it is to stave off disaster.

However, they know that they'll be crushed because no one believes them and while people will mouth a belief about global warming or whatever they are NOT willing to see their standards of living reduced.

As I've been saying, you can increase the interest rates all you want, but it won't tame this inflation. You can throw all the economics books and theories out the window. No they have not. Very very few are actually vaccinating their babies (less than 1 percent) and they are destroying mass quantities of the vaxx now because no one wants it. For the first time, people are blasting the FDA for emergency approval of the vaxx for babies despite NO evidence that it was safe or effective. For the most part, ignore whatever media blather is in the story and focus on hard numbers--like the number of vaxx doses destroyed, the percentage boosted, the rise in abnormal deaths, drops in fertility from miscarriages and so on.

Too many people believe that everyone else is an idiot except them. Most people are slow on the uptake because politics and policies rank around cleaning the toilet as a pleasurable task. But, they sure as hell recognize the effects in their lives like miscarriages, the friends dying at 26 from heart disease, and so on. Even the media cannot hide soccer players in the prime of life or tennis players being struck down. This will continue.

Not even from a market crash. Just inflation. Poof, gone. A non-legislative tax. All of that work to save, and it's gone.

In a 1999 survey by the Consumer Federation of America and financial services firm Primerica found that 40% of Americans with incomes between $25, 000 and $35, 000 a year, thought that the lottery would give them their retirement nest egg. What is interesting is that the same study found that number to increase to 50% when the income is $15, 000 to $25, 000 a year.

The interesting part is $25-$35k/year wasn't a horrible wage up until 2020 and the $15/hour minimum wage BS.

307 ".. won't count as a recession until the National Bureau of Economic Research pronounces it one"

NBER called the Covid slowdown a "recession" even though it was only two months. Weird, Trump had a 2 month long "recession".

"In June 2020 the NBER said the U.S. economy's expansion peaked in February 2020, falling into a recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic the next month. The economic expansion dating from June 2009 had lasted 128 months, surpassing the 120-month expansion from 1991 to 2001 as the longest stretch of uninterrupted growth in U.S. history.

In July 2021, the NBER concluded the recession that followed was the shortest on record at two months, with economic activity bottoming in April 2020"

We all spend money on dumb things, its just a matter of what the dumb thing is. For me its stuff like the aforementioned metal polyhedral dice and replacing our VHS collection with DVD. For others its their gun collection or a resto of a car, or a huge collection of shoes.

The lottery is largely based on greed (I want the money and I don't want to have to work for it) but that doesn't make the purchase its self immoral. The Bible does not outlaw gambling or lottery purchases, it outlaws the greed that might be behind it, the motivations. Its the intent and the heart that matters to God.

Piece of advice having had the Coof twice (autoimmune issues). Take it VERY easy on recovery and do your blood pressure on a regular basis--STOP what you are doing if you are feeling out of breath etc and rest. The Coof spike (and most likely the vaxx imitation spike) does something funky with your receptors that are necessary for cardiac system regulation.

In my case, I was having bp spikes up to stroke level despite never having high blood pressure in my life walking across a room. Had to take clonidine and bed rest to sort it out. And in both cases, I had the long coof with post coof infections--bronchitis the first time and pneumonia the second.

So take it easy post Coof even if it seems that you are good to go. People do not always have symptoms of high bp.

I'll just leave this here for anyone who is constantly confused by discussions at the HQ. Census dot gov:

"Median household income was $67,521 in 2020, a decrease of 2.9 percent from the 2019 median of $69,560 (Figure 1 and Table A-1). This is the first statistically significant decline in median household income since 2011."

383 I quit buying lottery tickets for the big jackpots because my imaginings went from fantasy fun to stress. "I'd have to try to start a productive business if I won hundreds of millions" So fun fantasy land would be the 1 to 10 million range. But I'm too cheap to buy tickets twice a week for the lower jackpots. I'd rather buy books and horse feed for my entertainment spending.

Stage management of The Vegetable was different yesterday. No teleprompter - he read everything off of note cards. No turning his back on everyone and exiting a door to the rear of the podium - he went to a door off-screen to his right, one that is in front of the podium position.

Why? What does this mean? I think the Junta is trying to improve Joe's TV image. Didn't work if so. He looked weak with his head down 90 percent of the time to read the cards. He looked just as disdainful towards the press and TV viewers, shuffling off stage-right with a blank look on his face.

386 Very few people are able to handle a sudden huge influx of money. They buy stupid crap and aren't good at estimating how much money will last how long. A million bucks sounds like a lot of cash, but look at your current income per year: how much of a million is it? That's how long it lasts with no increase in spending.

Forty million sounds like a huge amount of money but, its not really. And if you cannot keep that perspective you'll blow through it then find out suddenly that you have a ton of new expenses and nothing to maintain it.

387 Someone should point out to the junta how much money they could save (and then transfer to the US grifters) by bringing all the troops home.

Like I already said, I'm fine with people playing. I'm extremely pro-freedom that way. I do feel bad for folks who are barely scraping by and who think they're going to get out the easy way, though, when the $100/month they spend on lottery and scratch offs would add up to pretty decent winnings over time.

394 Concur...it may indeed not be true in the future.
The problem of low recruiting is that the problem intensifies across the branches of each Service with each year. Given three years of 50%'ish numbers and the result is a shortfall in certain skills positions. soon tanks won't get start, ships sit in port, and aircraft become dangerous. Now assume a turnaround in 2025, it'll take 2-3 years to even catch up to where we are today.

Yes it does. Perhaps though we will need to pivot to a reserve system more like the Israelis. With the coming deficits and debt problems, the public is simply not going be supportive of cutting Social Security and Medicare to fund the latest bomber etc.

It does not help that the military and legislative branch itself have destroyed the procurement system by allowing monopolies to form, assuming temporary needs are permanent, and trying to be all things for all possible situations. Choices are going to have to be made and they are going to gore each of the military's golden gooses such as man crewed aircraft, Ford class carriers, tanks, etc.

I actually only made one comment yesterday and that was, "I don't think she's a leftist." If nobody saw the point I was trying to make-that maybe pictures with boobs hanging almost completely out as opposed to sexy women in swimsuits which i don't really mind) sort of presented the idea that the only important thing about women is their breasts and various holes-was not the kindest idea. Since most women here probably don't want to pose with their boobs hanging out except to significant others maybe some people here should consider a men only forum. We did not have boobapolloza to this extent until several months ago

There, buddy you got your attention for the day. Whoopee.
