Who would've thought the majority of Americans wouldn't like watching a Canadian know-it-all telling them what's wrong with their country? Less people than you'd think, apparently, because Warner Bros. Discovery is giving everyone's favorite unfunny female late night host, Samantha Bee, the boot!
That's right! "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" won't be back on TBS in the fall, or anywhere else for that matter, according to a Variety report noting a statement from Bee's representatives.
Variety noted something Bee said in 2016 that most likely eventually led to her downfall.
"We do a show to please ourselves," Bee said then. "This gives us an opportunity to say the things we want in the exact way we want to say them."
While that's all well and good to say what you please -- free speech and all. To make a TV show based on what you like and never adjust to what the audience might like about it, shows the arrogance of those like Bee and her far-left writers.

According to Variety:

The end of her show will come as TV is trimming back its late-night antics. WarnerMedia decided to end its long-running "Conan" late-night program on TBS with Conan O'Brien. NBC and the late-night host Lilly Singh, a digital entertainment influencer who had launched a new show on the network in the wee hours of the morning, decided to part ways. Comedy Central, which once boasted three different late-night shows, now only has one, "The Daily Show," on regularly during weeknights. And CBS is mulling cheaper alternatives to replace James Corden when he leaves "The Late Late Show" in early 2023.

With Samantha Bee finally off the air, this frees up zero minutes of my time per week. I don't know what I'll do with this non-time I used to spend not watching her.

Maybe I'll use it to not pursue a hobby I'm not interested in, like soap whittling.

Writer Nick Kangadis notes that few people watch talk shows any longer, especially the staid, corporate, fake, predictable TV talkers, and have migrated to internet based conversationalists.

He also predicts:

The death rattle for classic talk shows, particularly of the late night variety, might just be upon us.

Oh, what a blessing that would be.

I do think the Way of Old Things is passing.

And Samantha Bee is, you know, and Old Thing.

Two Comments:

There's a real problem here and I am surprised that Ace didn't mention it.
Per The Verge, "Samantha Bee has one of the most diverse writer's rooms in late night TV." This is a big damn deal. They're callously canceling a show and causing an extremely diverse writing group to descend into unemployment, simply because the product was awful and the main star is an unbearable, shrill, distasteful harpy. Is this fair? Where's the damn justice? WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE DIVERSITY??????

there's actually a bigger, more fascinating issue lurking here. The ad revenue model for Television has failed. Now the support by ideological oligarchs model is failing. How does general audience broadcast go on - or does it just die now, with everything going to special interest streaming services?

This is a really, really great point.

I think this second model is the model of the present and the future -- media not supported by revenue, but by highly invested partisan oligarchs who use it for their own advertising/propaganda purposes. The value they extract from it is not monetary, at least not directly; it's in influence and power, which can be used to make money in other areas.

They use corporate TV less as a medium to peddle other people's propagandistic advertising messages and more to propagate their own propaganda messaging. Though they'll still take money to peddle other corporate propaganda, too.

I'm not sure Tom is right that this model is "failing." It's not very profitable, no, but it's not meant to be. At least not directly.

And sure Samantha Bee and others are cancelled, but that doesn't mean the model has failed; in every model, there's still going to be some minimum level of performance demanded. National Review is allowed to limp on, while the Weekly Standard is cancelled. You have to have some numbers to serve the oligarchs. They may agitate for socialism, but they are not themselves running a socialist enterprise.

I do think this is the model. It may fail but I think it's going to be with us for a while.

Related: Lee Smith has written a lot about how the media relies more and more on hired-gun "research" companies like FusionGPS for "news stories." Of course, these "research" companies are just paid by billionaires and political actors like Hillary Clinton and the DNC to write up often-fake "dossiers" to push propaganda on the country. But they can plant these propaganda stories in the media because they're ex-media themselves and are buddies with people in the media, and because people in media know they might later get high paying jobs with FusionGPS and should do them some favors, and also, because FusionGPS has them on the payroll right now for "research."

It's corrupt.

But right now, our "journalists" -- who already were corrupt propagandists -- are on the payroll of straight-up propaganda factories in the employ of billionaires and sociopathic politicians like Hillary Clinton.

The media has devolved into vanity projects for some time now - look at all the low rent lefty activist pamphlets out there now: Business Insider, RawStory, The Wrap, TalkingPointsMemo, etc, etc.
These are just broad sheets being handed out for free in the streets to anyone that will read them, usually like- minded lefty activists. No has an advertising model anymore.

It's possible that late night talk shows couldn't survive in the "New Media Ecosystem" (tm) anyway, but we'll never know because they have largely become shrill denunciation sessions hosted by incompetent and unfunny - though ideologically pure - pinch-faced scolds.

Were talk shows doomed no matter what? Maybe. Is there any chance they can survive in their current form? Definitely not. The only that surprises me at all is Conan.

Reality TV got relatively low viewership on average, but it was so dirt cheap that it was crowding out other content. I really don't watch TV shows anymore. Not broadcast. At all. Not even local news.

I watch baseball. I am currently watching recorded sports: tour de france, finished up british open and wimbledon. I did watch a couple of episodes of terminal list, which at first i thought it was going to go in a bad direction but after 3 episodes i see what they were doing. Its pretty good. I do watch old movies from time to time. I really don't find anything our cultural overlords are doing to be "entertaining".

"Friends" also had a large ensemble cast where each had some claim to being the "main" character on the show and thus deserving of a huge payday. Yes, but Friends made its costs back and much more.

Also, I disagree about the cast. they've all had decent careers since - maybe not to the heights of their Friends days but they all continue to work. Matt Perry would be far more successful if he didn't have substance abuse problems. And I really liked the show Episodes that Matt LeBlanc did.

418 351. I was in a waiting room last week and Friends was on the tv. I never watched it when it was a thing, and I'm glad. I watched a bit of the three episodes that scrolled by and it was beyond stupid. One guy wanted to move in with Aniston's roommate and she was to move out and no one could make a decision and there was sabotage and it was brain draining. Other than Aniston, none of the characters were funny or good looking. The sets were hideous. What was the deal with that show, why was it popular?

Every third commercial was an ad for some unprounceably named (but vaguely upbeat sounding) drug with a list of possible side effects that usually sounded much worse than whatever the disease. Make those go away and what could they replace that revenue source with? More ads for reverse mortgages?

It featured him "joking" that he'd bought Abe Lincoln's stovepipe hat at an auction, and that he loved it because it makes a great holder for nachos and chips. I actually just told the "joke" "funnier" than he did. And it was exactly that "funny." I assume this is some of his "strongest" "material."

Meh. It's a return to normal.

The "objective" media was always a lie, but it was a lie created in the first half of the 20th Century to justify broadcast rights from the government.

Before that, newspapers were all partisan and screechy. I'm fine with returning to that. It's going to take a while to deprogram a lot of people out of the idea of an objective media, but their numbers are not growing.

445 Just yesterday, I was watching something innocuous on no particular network, and up pops an ad for the upcoming Samantha Bee episode. It was "Ha, ha... anti-Trump! Ha, ha... It was nasty, disparaging, raised-middle-finger stuff; like if you were one of the participants in a pro-abort/anti-conservative rally. Not funny, just angry.

I actually changed channels from the show I had been enjoying because of a commercial I couldn't fully get through without being insulted. I rage-quit a tv show.

That's not a business model worth pursuing. Pretty soon, tv execs may notice the Kimmels and Bees and Colberts are all losing out to this goofball Gutfeld, who has not a fraction of their advertising budget.

Probably. But that begs the question - how many of those viewers would come back if he started getting political? Or would even understand what he is talking about.

My kids watch Mr. Beast and they are 12 and 14. I suspect most of his viewers are in that age range and view his stuff multiple times. In other words - does he have 50 million unique views or 50 million clicks? If 50 million clicks it could be 5 million kids watching the video ten times.

My lib sister in law worked in drug marketing. She noted that under Federal rules, the list of possible side effects had to include everything that had ever happened to someone who's taken the drug, even if it was 1 person out of 5 million or something.

I assume that's why there aren't ads for the vaxx.

Also, she worked on the commercials for the asthma inhaler where Antonio Banderas did the voice of the cartoon bee. (She said officially they couldn't say it was Banderas because he was afraid it would damage his career, but it was pretty much over by then anyway).

Entertainment media, like music before it, is being commoditized which eventually leads the whole model to collapse. For example, you can watch Colbert, his competitors, or old Johnny Carson reruns along with probably some others like Dick Cavett etc. That is excluding whatever is on streaming channels, the multiplicity of even broadcast stations, and youtube. The old monopoly network broadcasting model meant that Johnny had a lot fewer competitors for eyeballs on watching tv. Nowadays, that monopoly is busted and the networks are being hollowed out from the inside. Like Network News predicted, only the cheap labor in the industry will survive along with a few highly paid face people.

Eventually, the ad dollars get spread mighty thin especially as advertisers are facing their own declines in profitability.

Way back when, newspapers actually reflected the communities they served. Or there would be more than one paper for more divided ones. Papers had to keep local businesses happy so as not to drive off advertising and had to try not to get the local government too pissed off in order to keep lucrative legal notices.

505 Recently (maybe it was here on Ace), I read something about how when you see a ton of commercials for a show, that means the channel can't get enough advertisers to pay for it. Popular TV doesn't need constant boosting by the outlet.

My wife watches a lot of TBS, because of "Friends" and "Big Bang Theory" re-runs. They run Samantha Bee commercials non-stop all day long. We were just talking about how vitriolic and unpleasant she is. We're so glad she's gone.

Same with the late night losers. Never cared for the format, myself. Plus, I knew guys like Letterman were Left-wing dbags long before he "came out". Seems pretty obvious to me.

It pretty much doesn't matter, YT ad revenue is priced on views, not unique users. And YT people make a lot more money on branded merchandise and personalized ads (e.g. when the person talking stops and does an ad for some mobile game or whatever).

I liked Friends. It was funny for what it was. I also like Seinfeld.

I don't really think either was all that intellectual. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find any "sitcom" that is truly intellectual. Anything too high-brow usually doesn't last more than a season.

I always find it amusing when a popular pop culture show or movie is mentioned on blogs like this and so many people feel the need to virtue signal with "I never watched it" or "I watched it once, it was soooo stupid".

I'd say the shows are worse but crap like Three's Company and David Cassidy: Man Undercover were being put out then too. Probably overall TV is better than it ever has been, but there's also a lot of terrible crap out there too.

SNL still limps along despite having last been a cultural thing when Clinton was president because of that: it sells ads and is cheap to produce. Sooner or later, companies are going to figure out they aren't making much if any money from their ad buys but it takes a long time for established businesses to learn new things.

I kept going the wrong way at Firelink Shrine, thinking it was the only way to go. I just could not get better. I went from thinking that the game was really hard but fair to outright impossible. I finally looked up a walkthrough, and I discovered that that way was the way you go if you have no idea what you're doing. You were supposed to go this other way hidden along a rockface.

ME3 is 90% of a perfect game. There are other problems with the game that people completely ignore in light of the ending. The tone and mood is fantastic. Music is good. DLC was quite good. They just dropped a lot of threads that I wish they had spent more time on (endings included.)

I saw a recipe recently for people who couldn't have fatty, greasy meats anymore that used slices of carrots and liquid smoke. It seemed like a pretty clever idea even though it certainly wouldn't be bacon.

The only part that I don't get is if you're a vegan and you still want jerky, you're not a vegan. You're still craving jerky, which is meat.

Charcoal burner is an occupation that is going to come back into style in europe.

Make a pile of wood. Cover it with mud. Leave a few air holes in the bottom. One or two at top. Start a fire in the bottom. Once it gets going pretty good. Cover the hole up with mud. Let it fester for a day for so. Break open mud and remove lump charcoal.
