124 If you're a fan of unsolved mysteries, you may well have come across the Somerton Man, a body found on an Australian beach under unusual circumstances in 1947. DNA has now identified him as Carl "Charles" Webb, an electrical engineer and instrument maker who appears to have left his wife in 1947 and was never seen again. Pretty remarkable but it doesn't solve the unusual circumstances of the case.

It has solar panels and they claim they can get 40 miles from solar charging in a day. It might not be true, but even getting 1-2 miles from solar alone would be pretty amazing.

Plus, it looks like a space car. I'm not going to be giving them any money, but I'm going to watch it to see if it pans out.

When I was around 12, I saw a scythe in my grandparents' barn. I asked my 75-ish-yr-old grandpa if I could try it. I brought it over to a stand of weeds alongside the barn and took a swipe. The weeds stared back at me, unmoved. I took another swipe. Nothing. I felt the edge, thinking it probably needed sharpening. I wouldn't call it sharp, but gramps assured me it was sharp enough. He watched me take a few more passes at it before getting up and proving it wasn't the instrument at fault. I watched that old guy sweep through about 200 sq ft of tall grass like a well-oiled machine. I can still imagine his sparkling blue eyes and wide grin as he returned the "dull" instrument to me to give it another shot.

I don't believe Democrats think they have to win every election. They may tell their voters that, but they don't really have to. A loss in '22, followed by a loss in '24 to them is just a slowdown of the agenda.

Republicans never scale back Democrat wins, they just pause them. Democrats know this. So they could very easily decide they're fine with letting Alzheimer Joe take the L in '24.

I'm trying to remember if Madame Bovary had a reference to it. Ladies at formal parties, needing to go stand near a plant in the corner, or something like that. I could be thinking of something else. The book was very risque though, saying things without needing to say it.

364 Hi, y'all. It's me.

That gal with the dress that's all layers of pink? All I can think about is how many places in that dress there are for ticks to hide.

Actually, thanks to so many weeks of no precipitation and 100°+ days, the tick and skeeter populations seem to be 'way down. Finally got a light sprinkling today, so maybe the pests will all spring back. Not enough rain to save this parched brown lawn, though.

365 For reference on Augustine, "De libero arbitrio voluntatis". "On Free Choice of the Will". Here he argues that Free Will is the source of evil, which the Catholic Church and many denominations carry forward to this day.

Calvin sort of takes Augustine's later anti-Pelagian works to negate his earlier works against the Manicheans.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at July 28, 2022 10:07 AM (b2nrj)

Free will may very well be the source of evil, but it is the only way "good" and obedience to God can be shown also.
Of the many and morally varied choices we can make each day, to choose to do the right thing takes deliberate conscious.
After all, is it really charity if the government takes your money and decides who to give to?

369 OT, but just looking at Apple expected earnings vs 3q21. They report later today. Revenue expected to show increase of 1.6%, while EPS expects a decrease of 10.7%. So that looks like a 12.5% increase in costs.
Also noticed that overall, product revenues seen as down near a percent, while service revenues up over 13%, so they are selling less things and charging you more for having them.
I expect actual will be worse, and continue to get more worse.

I have always had success using wet compresses, as hot as I can stand. Press down hard. Repeat three times in quick sucession. A dermatologist recommended it.

And...twice a day for at least two days.. After three days the boil should be no longer be painful or raised much, but it will take a few more days for the area to completely heal. No lancing or digging or coal tar needed.

375 291 Horde, I need medical advice. I've been graced with what seems to be a boil. Never had one before. What is the process to get rid of it?

I lanced one on my thigh in elementary school with a nonsterile paperclip because it was hurting so bad I was about to cry. I wouldn't tell my mom about it because I was afraid she would take me to the doctor. As soon as I opened it with the paperclip, immediate pain relief.

But try a hot compress and if you have epsom salt, mix a paste with that and put on it under a warm compress.

If the compress doesn't work, I'm all for lancing it. Not with a paperclip, even though its a proven winner if that's all you got.

After you lance it, dump some alcohol or iodine on it (yes, this will hurt) and then slather it with antibiotic ointment.
