Breaking: Explosion at the Hoover Dam
New Video Added

CityofBoulderCityNV

@BoulderCityNev

Boulder City Fire Department is en route to an emergency call at Hoover Dam. No further information is available at this time.

I hope this is something mundane and minor, like a generator blowing up from poor maintenance.

Although -- even that is something that happens in third world countries that don't bother doing maintenance, isn't it?

Importantly, this explosion is not in the body of the actual dam itself.

DaveA links this video of a transformer catching fire and then exploding, which might be what happened here.

That doesn't look remotely close to big enough to cause any kind of critical damage to the dam. If that's terrorism, something either went really wrong with the explosive charges, or the bomber has a serious problem understanding the scale of his target.

It depends on what it is. If it's a transformer, probably a couple of months if I had to make a wild, uneducated guess. Those power plant transformers are *huge." The plant up the road from me got new transformers this year and it required road closures, de-energizing power lines along the route, police convoys, etc. to deliver them. Big operation, and those were for a midsized power plant. I don't imagine transformers that big are sitting around waiting to be sold, they're probably build to order.

Well that's a sign the transformer is going. Could last another month, could last another 5 years. It's hard to say. You can't fix it really, you have to completely rebuild the transformer. So a lot electric operators roll the dice on early indications of transformer failure, because it usually is a slow process of degradation, and you have years of life in the transformer left. Well sometimes it's not slow, and you don't have years, and degradation deteriorates into a full loss of coupling between the primary and secondary and all that power just gets dumped into the transformer body and BOOM!

210 I think the story of the dam's construction had some very American elements. The big civil construction firms of the day didn't want any part of it, so some small guys got together and formed a consortium to do it. Henry Kaiser I believe was one of the members (he'd been primarily a road-builder).

A friend is working with a descendant of the consortium founder (I think that's who it is), doing development projects in NV. Sadly, and unsurprisingly, from what I gathered during shouted conversation during a long bike ride, it sounds like they're mostly drawing on guvamint grants (and doing nothing remotely as squarely in the "public good" category as Hoover Dam).

Class: compare and contrast this with, for example, the slave labor projects in the USSR of the time, on their "hero projects", none of which compared to the technical and other majesty of Hoover Dam.

213 So a lot electric operators roll the dice on early indications of transformer failure, because it usually is a slow process of degradation, and you have years of life in the transformer left.

Since there isn't enough water to run all the generators, the Bureau of Reclamation may well have decided to run the transformers until failure.

Usually for critical infrastructure like this they will have at least one backup. It’s the smaller regionals that have limited backup capabilities.

300 The Hover Dam was built as part of our responsibility under the Inner Space Interspecies Non-aggression Treaty.
At the base of the water side is the Europa Embassy.

Of course, the declining water level has reduced the required pressure and, unable to reach any of the current idiots running this country, they've resorted to sabotage to return the water level to minimum.

328 If I could write short stories, this would be about Bob and Irene Cummings, life-long residents of Las Vegas. Bob is an electrician and Irene worked in the library. But in reality they were Oskar and Svetlana Karcov of Leningrad, deep sleeper agents of the GRU. After Irene died last year of breast cancer, Bob was doubly alone...abandoned by his partner for so many years, and also by the communications lines to his handler, silent since the fall of the Soviet Union.
Stricken with grief, and knowing he is on limited time due to his own onset of Alzheimer's, Bob decides to end it all in a final act of communist defiance. He goes to their remote hide site where their weapons and munitions had been stored since the 60's. Pulling it all together, he sets out to attack their primary target.
Little does Bob know that his final act will lead to a genera BLM/Antifa uprising and set the summer of '22 in America on fire.

405 Well, I see NATO as a potential counter to European infantalization. The problem is not adding European members, the problem is that the US should get out and let them twist in the wind on their own.

That was impossible because the main project of "keeping Germany down" has been a total failure. Germany runs the continent, and they want Russia in, and US out, and NATO is our defense against that.

Or am I missing something? However bad EU is, it still beats Russia and China's view of society and what their plans are for us.
