Had a similar restaurant experience at a Cuban place in Tampa when I was there TDY. Walked in. I was the only customer. They were very nice. Sat me down, and I ordered. Then the owner brought me a beer and invited me out to the patio. Turns out he was hosting his daughters wedding dinner. I offered to leave them to their celebration but nothing doing. Had a wonderful time and no idea what anyone was saying.

I once got a free meal at Taco Bell around Christmas time. I had been a regular customer for a couple of years (as in eating there several times a week). Then one day I show up for my usual order...they said it was "on the house" and told me to have a Merry Christmas.

Ok, that gives me an idea for an SF story.
Time traveler goes back in time to kill future evil dictator who is not yet particularly evil or dictator-y. By accident the future evil dictator survives and gets the notion that he'll be killed by people from the future if he doesn't completely take over society. He proceeds to do so and kill a shit ton of people in his quest to keep himself safe and rid the future of time traveling would be murders. Which then causes a desperate future citizen to invent a time machine to go back in time and kill current evil dictator...in the past. Cobra Kai is good in my opinion. It builds on the lore of the franchise without tearing down what is there. Well done by fans of the Karate Kid movies. Daniel and Johnny are both well done with flaws and virtues. I don't think there's really any woke messaging, and even like the woke-ish stuff I would say is more just the nature of the show being done in the "real world," and its not the message of the show and the priority is always the story.

I forgot to pack shirts. Not a single one other than the one I was wearing. That Ramsay meme reminds me of the stories of Trump - and I know stories are stories, but these were told by several different people who knew the *other* parties involved.
Paraphrasing because it's from memory - Trump would give out loans to black men starting small businesses in the 80's. A year later or so they would come back to him and proudly hand him their repayment in the form of a check. He would say to them, "Is your business open?" They would answer "Yes". "This is the money you made from the business?" They would answer "Yes." Then he would tear up the check and say "Congratulations. Go enjoy your business". The first such story I remember reading was about a time traveler that goes into the future and finds everything destroyed. He goes into a museum and finds a perfectly preserved knife of amazing quality. He brings it back to the present but no one can figure out what it is made of...and eventually it ends up in a museum. Yes, it is. I remember my late father washing his hands with it after working on the cars or lawnmower etc. He grew up on a farm in the 30s/40s no water no electricity then, knew what worked and what didn't. Oh and speaking of plot points, I was thinking about The Northman spoilers!!! The protagonist is given many opportunities to either forgive or choose to leave his uncle alone, and like a good Viking refuses to...and dies getting his vengeance.
The Slavic priestess in love with him tries to get him to ignore the revenge stuff and just leave with her - which makes sense, well, probably, we don't know as much about slavic paganism as we do Viking paganism. But they could have done a better job fleshing out the Viking vs Slavic (vs Christian if they wanted to) world view that leads each of the characters to act the way they do. Yes the play up that the protagonist is fated to face his uncle, but the importance of vengeance in Viking culture is somewhat minimized. Posted by: 18-1 at July 08, 2022 10:45 PM (ESjRY) 202

Don't drink all the beers and then try this. Try this with the empty cans from last night. This one time in grad school I threw a party for our research group and my roommates at our house. Party's over, folks have left, including the roommates, and I take some trash down to the garbage can. It's full, so I climb atop it so I can compact it with my feet. Can (and me) tips over onto the concrete floor of the garage, glass breaks and I open up a large gash in my knee that bleeds like there's no tomorrow. I dash upstairs to the bathroom and start cleaning the wound in the bathtub. Roommates return, see the overturned garbage can and a trail over blood going up the stairs. WTF? After having a good laugh at my expense, they take me to student health services down on the Berkeley campus to get stitches. That's where I spend the next hour or so, listening for much of the time to a couple who just ingested psychedelic fungi. He's whacked out and paranoid; she's tripping balls. The real problem with time travel is that people forget it is space-time, they expect the Earth to be there when they go back in time, and it hasn't got there yet. Remember the Galaxy is moving through space at enormous velocity. Go back even one second and you find yourself in space with the Earth hundreds of miles away, and gravity pulling you into it. Ouch.

265 The real problem with time travel is that people forget it is space-time, they expect the Earth to be there when they go back in time, and it hasn't got there yet. Remember the Galaxy is moving through space at enormous velocity. Go back even one second and you find yourself in space with the Earth hundreds of miles away, and gravity pulling you into it. Ouch.

Depends on the pseudo-science for the time travel. If you can travel through time, presumably you can travel through space as well. Another problem, is you won't be arriving in a perfect vacuum. What happens to the matter in the space you appear in...even if it is say just air? Posted by: 18-1 at July 08, 2022 11:05 PM (ESjRY) 284

Yeah but man does that shit clean good. I use it in the shop sometimes for severe dirty crap that I don't want to insult the parts washer with. Wheel bearings for one thing. Every time I do tires on a harley I yank the wheel bearings, drop them in gas to clean them spotless, then repack them. The gas just melts the old grease off them. Last week I had to rebuild a really nasty dirty 1954 panhead transmission. Gave it a gas bath first before hitting the glass beader and it almost didn't need the glass beader after the gas got done with it. I..love...gas. lol

Ok the music aspires to reach the level of bubble gum, and the lyrics are...not brilliant, but she was a 14 year old girl. She wrote a song.
I guarandamntee you she did not write the song. Her parents paid some record industry hacks to write every single note and produce it, and she got to add some semblance of her voice on the heavily-massaged and auto-tuned vocal track to launch her to the childhood "stardom" her parents so desperately sought for her. It's been done innumerable times, and anyone can do the same thing today. Your kid's song, though, is unlikely to be quite as godawfully shitty, and so will disappear into obscurity. I think it was basically high-purity kerosene. I saved the spent (dirty) solvent in 5-gallon buckets, and usually brought 2 or 3 home from each well, and dumped them into a barrel. After settling for months or years, all the clay fines have dropped out, and the clear solvent is colored like strong tea, and works great for washing auto parts. We always used acetone in the labs I worked in. I worked in an R&D lab where we were making thermal transfer compound (filled silicone.) Acetone worked... fairly(?) well at cutting the stuff after making a batch. Then, they decided to switch to something called 'Safety Solvent' which smelled foul, oily as hell and did not cut worth a damn. It was easier to scrape everything out of the vessel and then just wipe out the remainder. I left shortly after that and do not know if they decided it was not worth the trouble.
Hell, that was around '99 and I think I could still write out the recipe for that stuff (the silicone compound) now. Made a lot of batches of the stuff. Posted by: Aetius451AD Johnson Work Laptop at July 08, 2022 11:28 PM (diceA) 354

This is a variant on a true story. Charles Steinmetz was called in by Henry Ford to diagnose an issue they were having with a generator. Steinmetz worked alone for two days. On completion, he told them to remove a cover plate he'd marked with chalk and remove 16 windings from the field coil. They did it and it worked. Steinmetz charged $10,000. Ford balked at the price and demanded an itemized bill. The bill was $1.00 for the chalk mark and the remainder for knowing where to make the mark. Ford paid it. I only know this because I looked up the Trivia and Goofs sections about the movie at IMDB because a station ran it here a few weeks ago but...
Colin Maud and his English bulldog "Winston" are shown spurring "British" soldiers into advancing up the beach. In actual fact the incident took place on the sole "Canadian" Beach, Juno--and Maud's dog was an "Alsatian", aka German Shepherd, not a bulldog. Might be easier to build a real car with a real engine that fits under a one of kind fabricated body shell that looks like a Tesla S.
Probably more realistic, but this would be something you would do if you had silly money. I suppose the biggest fun would be parking it in the row of charging Teslas (leave the charging port in place but not hooked to anything) and walk over, unplug it, and fire it up. I always said I was gonna learn TIG, but never have got the equipment. Might do it one of these days. The solid state electronic wizardy has made those things relatively cheap. Relatively, mind you. Another neighbor had a YUGE TIG machine he had acquired somehow, a genuine brand name Heliarc machine (Heliarc is sometimes used as the name for TIG welding, like Kleenex for tissue). It was a big one. Single phase. '60s tech. The HF circuit was an old spark gap tank circuit. Open up the side panels, and you saw the spark gaps. Now, that neighbor couldn't TIG weld a bit. It would do regular stick, of course, and that's what he'd used it for himself. But, when he needed some fancy stuff done. And indeed when my father and me needed some fancy, delicate welding done, we'd get old Sonny out there and he'd do it with that old machine. If I recall, the common standin for Bf-109s before Battle of Britain got the Spanish Hispanos into the film industry was the Bf-108 and postwar Nord copies. Light cabin monoplane built first by Messerschmidt that kind of resembled the 109. And usually T-6s were given meatballs to play Zeroes before Tora Tora Tora created the replicas.

Yamagami Tetsuya, 41, allegedly used a handmade gun to shoot the former Prime Minister at a campaign event Friday in Nara, Japan, where the gunman lives.
Tetsuya was a member of the Japanese Navy for three years, from 2002 to 2005, where he received firearms training and served several roles, including self-defense official and crew member of the escort ship Matsuyuki, Japanese news outlet NHK reported, citing the Japanese Ministry of Defense. Police also confiscated several handmade guns and explosives from his apartment, and asked residents nearby to evacuate due to the risk of an explosion while they dispose of the firearms. Tetsuya had been working at a manufacturing plant in Japan’s Kansai region over the past two years, quitting in May, according to the Kyodo News. I'm remembering that machine. It's probably still out in that neighbor's shop (which junior owns now). It had a water cooled torch. Closed loop circulator system that had a radiator mounted in the main machine. Fan blew air through. Foot pedal controls. Sonny showed me all the controls. He was very coordinated. Foot, both hands all working. You continuously varied current with the foot pedal. Another control on the torch kicked the HF in and out. Torch was held with one hand, and you held the filler rod with the other. Sonny made it look like child's play. It was not. That boy could stack dimes so purty... As for did I ever build a model of his plane? No I have not.
And a word of caution for the model builders out there wanting to build in 1/48 Focke Wulf's Wurger; if its the Eduard FW 190 kit with matte boxes and the plastic sprues are tan in color; that is the original molds with the way complicated BMW 801 engine. Later Eduard FW 190s with the glossy box art have medium gray plastic and the BMW 801 engine is far simplified. Unless you open up the cowling access panels, because of how tightly cowled the engine is and with the cooling fan in front of the crankcase no one will see the engine anyway. Rambling more on the modeling front about the Eduard Fw 190 kits, for one there is parts included to make a model plane Eduard has never officially released.
Eduard tends to make what are called 'common sprues' of parts found on all versions of a particular plane. Anyway in the new mold FW 190F-8 kit there are three propellers, one is used for the A model 190s and the other is for the F-8. The third, which has noticeably larger paddles, is for the Fw 190F-9 which had a different BMW 801 engine which means you will then look at the different cooling fans present and pick the one with the 13 blades. Thus you will be able to build most Fw 190F-9s, well except for those that got fitted with a Ta 152 tail. So check your photos. After Kursk failed in 43 they steadily lost til the end. Big topic, but I don't think that lots of Germans, from military (who generally knew or sensed the score) or the public (judging by SD reporting) really thought things were going OK and that they would win after early '42. Certainly many hoped for some deal/truce far short of unconditional surrender, at least til the Allies were in German territory.
And seems both those numbers are a bit off. Germany didn't inflict 80% of the guesstimated total death toll of WWII, 60M? And I thought Germany lost a lot more than 5M total? But long time since I looked at those kinds of estimates. Posted by: rhomboid at July 09, 2022 02:09 AM (OTzUX) 635

Won't fight you, Cicero, but counter-factually hallucinating, if Japan doesn't attack the US a month later ..... then what?
What if the previously dominant "northern strategy" of the Japanese army continued strong enough to result in their attempt to implement their war plan to take the eastern USSR? Instead of the southern strategy to seize (more) resource areas. Or if Tokyo had eschewed (I think the Japanese of that era could eschew, it wasn't culturally taboo) any attack on US forces, and just took Dutch and British possessions, and thereby dared the US to enter the war without benefit of massive provocation? Nope. You're correct. Once the US could openly produce at full speed without citizen complaint, it was only a matter of time. Basically we fed and provided transport for the Soviets so they could just build military equipment. We also gave nearly half the Sherman production to the British. ---------- It's true that Germany soldiered on after the collapse of Barbarossa. But now, the odds of its success turned on serendipitous events that were completely outside of its own control. Goebbels' delusional invocation of the Miracle of the House of Brandenburg in the closing months of the war was just the most extreme example of the German wishful thinking that functioned in the stead of any marginally realistic plan to achieve victory. Of course the krauts could still be dead men walking, if Japan doesn't attack Pearl and the US does not enter the war (more than it had) in 1942.
I'm reminded that my knowledge of the details of Lend-Lease is scandalously thin, so I don't know if the USSR was already a beneficiary prior to Pearl Harbor, but I think they were (if a minor one). What effect on the eastern front without the Lend-Lease aid that actually did occur, if that was a consequence of my counter-factual timeline? Cicero you've got good company, several WWII historians say that Germany was essentially doomed from some time in '41 onwards, barring a major shift in the events that actually occurred. Posted by: rhomboid 5 million dead German soldiers a about a million dead German civilians, is the closest estimate to the truth, I think. Russian losses alone are now considered to be about 45 - 49 million, soldiers and civilians combined. The war was a lot more devastating for the USSR that most people. One recent scholar says the Soviet system was doomed by WW2, just the sheer loss of capital. It took another 45 years to manifest itself, but the Germans won the Cold War as much as the Americans did. That's his theory anyway. It didn't help Stalin killed another 15 million on top of what the Germans killed. My point was that the German military was stoned out of their minds as was a yuge percentage of the population for most of the war, and that they really did stack bodies far out of proportion to their own losses, particularly with the two weapons I mentioned. With the final point derived from those thoughts that the General population may have thought the war was going much better than it was, with quite a shock coming once Germany's borders were overrun. I could be full of shit. It wouldn't be the first time that was true. Posted by: Sharkman at July 09, 2022 02:35 AM (8gxrg) 670

Well I was just proposing the "dead man" status was confirmed more in early '43 than November '41, though as noted many historians pick December '41 (failure to take Moscow, after failing to put the UK out of the war) as the real end of the road, so you have good company.

Rhomboid, I recently read a book on Lend Lease and how completely in the bag for Stalin Roosevelt was. Cant remember the author but the book details the sheer weight of hundreds of products that we shipped to the USSR during the war. Germany would have defeated the Soviets without all that rhe US sent their way for 4 years.

Hitler killed how many, vice how many Stalin, or Mao killed?
Posted by: Romeo13 Hitler gets "credit" for a lot of Russians that really belong to Stalin, given Stalin's status as an even worse war leader than Hitler. Tens of millions died who didn't have to because of Stalin's errors and intentionally evil policies. Plus Stalin gets credit for 15 million killed in the Gulags over his 30 year span of power. Mao killed at least 100 million. He wins the contest hands down. Posted by: Sharkman at July 09, 2022 02:44 AM (8gxrg) 676
My point was that the German military was stoned out of their minds as was a yuge percentage of the population for most of the war, . . .
Posted by: Sharkman at July 09, 2022 02:35 AM (8gxrg) . . . including Hitler, himself, who decided he was a better military strategist than his General Staff. The Germans were really delusional about what it would take to conquer Russia. After rolling over Western Europe, thinking they could do that with Russia was truly fantasyland. Russians have never been very good at initiating conflict outside their borders (see: Present-day Ukraine), but when defending Mother Russia, they are full-on mama bears. I think Germany could have won the war against the USSR, but a few things would need to happen differently. #1 They don't get bogged down in Yugoslavia for 6 weeks and take Moscow. #2 They are smart enough to pull the 6th army out of Stalingrad. #3 In the fallout of the fall of Moscow, somebody takes out Stalin (pick you poison-Molotov? Beria? Zhukov? Was Khrushchev high enough to take a grab for the golfed ring at that time?) and in the free-for-all fight for power that would have inevitably followed, negotiates for peace along the lines of WWI. Now, whether Germany would have won the inevitable follow up war 10 - 15 years later (if the Allies in the West sign a treaty) or held out against the Western allies if they continued the war w/o Russia (probably not, but it would have been so much bloodier) is another question.
