I forgot to pack shirts. Not a single one other than the one I was wearing. (sorry Mr. Anka) I didn't have a car when I was there so I walked about 15 miles to the nearest store and bought about six shirts. The trip got extended a week but I could walk to a laundry each week and clean everything.

I forgot to pack shirts. Not a single one other than the one I was wearing. (sorry Mr. Anka) I didn't have a car when I was there so I walked about 15 miles to the nearest store and bought about six shirts. The trip got extended a week but I could walk to a laundry each week and clean everything.

DH and I were assisted by a, um, pyrsyn the other day. It had rainbow hair and plenty of rainbow pins on its vest, long black fingernails (trimmed to points on the ends) and a generally indifferent demeanor. Also, minimal eye makeup, so I suppose it may have been born "male", but who am I to assume gender?

No I'm well aware that general stable time loop stories are a thing. This specific example of one I thought interesting though.
The first such story I remember reading was about a time traveler that goes into the future and finds everything destroyed. He goes into a museum and finds a perfectly preserved knife of amazing quality. He brings it back to the present but no one can figure out what it is made of...and eventually it ends up in a museum. Where it remains through an eventual civilization collapse. Until that same time traveler comes to the museum and finds the knife...

Yes, it is. I remember my late father washing his hands with it after working on the cars or lawnmower etc. He grew up on a farm in the 30s/40s no water no electricity then, knew what worked and what didn't.
And that said, that video can't be real. I mean, that gal has gotta be someone doing a stunt video or something, right? No one is that dumb. The smell alone would set off mental alarms, and I'd think an attendant would come running. On the other hand, if it were a stunt video with water or computer-edited or something, I imagine they'd have her with a Marlboro.

It's the same principle except instead of 1 screen it's 1024 screens or tiles in this case.
The bigger problem is the supply chain is f'ing with the project and I'm still waiting for the Crestron control System and Analog Way display processor.
Won't get that sh*t till November so we have a rube goldbergian work around that involves a lot of AJA and BlackMagic converters.
This is sub-optimal but will do.

The Slavic priestess in love with him tries to get him to ignore the revenge stuff and just leave with her - which makes sense, well, probably, we don't know as much about slavic paganism as we do Viking paganism.
But they could have done a better job fleshing out the Viking vs Slavic (vs Christian if they wanted to) world view that leads each of the characters to act the way they do. Yes the play up that the protagonist is fated to face his uncle, but the importance of vengeance in Viking culture is somewhat minimized.

This one time in grad school I threw a party for our research group and my roommates at our house. Party's over, folks have left, including the roommates, and I take some trash down to the garbage can. It's full, so I climb atop it so I can compact it with my feet. Can (and me) tips over onto the concrete floor of the garage, glass breaks and I open up a large gash in my knee that bleeds like there's no tomorrow. I dash upstairs to the bathroom and start cleaning the wound in the bathtub.
Roommates return, see the overturned garbage can and a trail over blood going up the stairs. WTF? After having a good laugh at my expense, they take me to student health services down on the Berkeley campus to get stitches. That's where I spend the next hour or so, listening for much of the time to a couple who just ingested psychedelic fungi. He's whacked out and paranoid; she's tripping balls. A truly memorable day all around.

My sister had a rolex. I think it was 10 K. She was very successful in insurance sales, and she has always had a strong need to impress people. The thing about the rolex is, it didn't actually look any better than the fossil watch I have, which has genuine crystals instead of diamonds, and is "gold tone".

I have an old Timex analog sans the strap that rotted away years ago. It's held onto the seatbelt on my Kubota tractor with a zip-tie. It has the original battery.
From 2004.
It's been outside the whole time. I have to reset the time about once every 4 years. No idea what keeps it ticking... other than it's a Timex.

Yeah but man does that shit clean good. I use it in the shop sometimes for severe dirty crap that I don't want to insult the parts washer with. Wheel bearings for one thing. Every time I do tires on a harley I yank the wheel bearings, drop them in gas to clean them spotless, then repack them. The gas just melts the old grease off them. Last week I had to rebuild a really nasty dirty 1954 panhead transmission. Gave it a gas bath first before hitting the glass beader and it almost didn't need the glass beader after the gas got done with it. I..love...gas. lol

Solvent is stooopid money. I run 2 parts washers. 1 of them is for final assembly of engines, so shit that is already clean goes in there for the final rinse. Its damn near $100 for the solvent for the bigger tank. Thats why if its real nasty it goes in the gas first.

We used acetone to wash most glassware in the lab. Also ethanol. I must have gone through 100 gals of acetone just for washing and rinsing. MEK doesn't evaporate fast enough and is more expensive.

My present stock of solvent is salvaged "odorless" solvent that I used for washing drill cuttings made using oil-based drilling mud. I think it was basically high-purity kerosene. I saved the spent (dirty) solvent in 5-gallon buckets, and usually brought 2 or 3 home from each well, and dumped them into a barrel. After settling for months or years, all the clay fines have dropped out, and the clear solvent is colored like strong tea, and works great for washing auto parts.
When that runs out, i will see if I can mooch a barrel of contaminated jet fuel.

My dad used to get a distillate he called varsol. Kept it in a gallon glass jug / milk bottle (maybe?). I used some to start the grill once, being out of charcoal lighter fluid, while dad was on the way home from work so he could make bbq chicken one summer's evening.
The fireball could have been seen from space. The charcoal was nearly instantly ready to cook over.

If you need it bone dry then by all means give it a final rinse in 'a little' gasoline or similar. The kerosene leaves the part slightly oiled which may be advantageous vis-a-vis corrosion. Also the used kerosene can be kept for future cleaning of heavily greased items.

This is a variant on a true story. Charles Steinmetz was called in by Henry Ford to diagnose an issue they were having with a generator. Steinmetz worked alone for two days. On completion, he told them to remove a cover plate he'd marked with chalk and remove 16 windings from the field coil.
They did it and it worked. Steinmetz charged $10,000. Ford balked at the price and demanded an itemized bill. The bill was $1.00 for the chalk mark and the remainder for knowing where to make the mark. Ford paid it.

It arrived in late Dec. of 2021, when I set it, and damned if it's still within 1 sec of UTC.
I also got a G-shock "atomic" version. That thing's local accuracy is nowhere near that. It will be out of sync by a sec in a little over a week.

I remember having a Texas Instruments digital watch, that had a Beta Lite behind the LCD display. That was a little glass capsule with a fluorescent screen, filled with radioactive tritium gas. Had a soft green glow, 24/7.
The TI watch eventually died, and I was able to fit the Beta Lite behind the display in a new cheap digital watch. By the time that watch died, the Beta Lite had lost most of its mojo.

That original one I got in the late 90s was very accurate as well, but it just lost it -- something went askew. It will get out of whack by over a minute in a month.

Brens were nice but the barrels got almost redhot too quickly and spare barrels had to be carried. Not a big problem as they were easy to swap out.

I always said I was gonna learn TIG, but never have got the equipment. Might do it one of these days. The solid state electronic wizardy has made those things relatively cheap. Relatively, mind you.
Another neighbor had a YUGE TIG machine he had acquired somehow, a genuine brand name Heliarc machine (Heliarc is sometimes used as the name for TIG welding, like Kleenex for tissue).
It was a big one. Single phase. '60s tech. The HF circuit was an old spark gap tank circuit. Open up the side panels, and you saw the spark gaps.

Now, that neighbor couldn't TIG weld a bit. It would do regular stick, of course, and that's what he'd used it for himself. But, when he needed some fancy stuff done. And indeed when my father and me needed some fancy, delicate welding done, we'd get old Sonny out there and he'd do it with that old machine.
He loved that old thing more than the fancier modern machines he used at his workplace.

I'm remembering that machine. It's probably still out in that neighbor's shop (which junior owns now).
It had a water cooled torch. Closed loop circulator system that had a radiator mounted in the main machine. Fan blew air through.
Foot pedal controls. Sonny showed me all the controls. He was very coordinated. Foot, both hands all working. You continuously varied current with the foot pedal. Another control on the torch kicked the HF in and out. Torch was held with one hand, and you held the filler rod with the other.
Sonny made it look like child's play. It was not. That boy could stack dimes so purty...

And a word of caution for the model builders out there wanting to build in 1/48 Focke Wulf's Wurger; if its the Eduard FW 190 kit with matte boxes and the plastic sprues are tan in color; that is the original molds with the way complicated BMW 801 engine. Later Eduard FW 190s with the glossy box art have medium gray plastic and the BMW 801 engine is far simplified.
Unless you open up the cowling access panels, because of how tightly cowled the engine is and with the cooling fan in front of the crankcase no one will see the engine anyway.

Eduard tends to make what are called 'common sprues' of parts found on all versions of a particular plane.
Anyway in the new mold FW 190F-8 kit there are three propellers, one is used for the A model 190s and the other is for the F-8. The third, which has noticeably larger paddles, is for the Fw 190F-9 which had a different BMW 801 engine which means you will then look at the different cooling fans present and pick the one with the 13 blades. Thus you will be able to build most Fw 190F-9s, well except for those that got fitted with a Ta 152 tail. So check your photos.

I still have no clue where that character is from. Last week or so I was talking about the metal cruises I used to do every year. The last night of the cruise is like freak show night, some people wear fucked up costumes. Well a few dudes were wearing these huge pikachu costumes, and each one looked like it could have fit 3 people, so you had 3 or 4 of these huge pikachu things trying to move around in one of the smaller bars on the ship and it wasn't going well. At one point I heard this one voice come out of a pikachu and he says to another one "Dude, we don't fit anywhere". lol

Endless fidgety changes was the German way. Whereas the Allies way was to standardize and mass produce. Not sure if the German way was just a cultural quirk or because they knew they couldn't produce enough numbers and gambled on superior quality instead. Either way, once they didn't have it wrapped up by 1942, they didn't have the numbers to win and it was just stalling the end as long as possible.

Agree. There were completely impractical battleship designs that were produced right up til near the very end of the war. Much better to sit in an office doing that than sit in a hole in Poland waiting for the T-34s to show up.

What also hurt the Nazis on the Eastern Front was the Red Army penchant for mass wave attacks, suffering enormous losses on both sides. The Russians could make up those losses while the Nazis could not. The Eastern Front was a devastating war of attrition -- and, for the Russian, it worked.

What if the previously dominant "northern strategy" of the Japanese army continued strong enough to result in their attempt to implement their war plan to take the eastern USSR? Instead of the southern strategy to seize (more) resource areas. Or if Tokyo had eschewed (I think the Japanese of that era could eschew, it wasn't culturally taboo) any attack on US forces, and just took Dutch and British possessions, and thereby dared the US to enter the war without benefit of massive provocation?

Nope. You're correct. Once the US could openly produce at full speed without citizen complaint, it was only a matter of time. Basically we fed and provided transport for the Soviets so they could just build military equipment. We also gave nearly half the Sherman production to the British. Germans had better stuff at times, but not five or ten times better, which is what they would have needed to keep up.

What effect on the eastern front without the Lend-Lease aid that actually did occur, if that was a consequence of my counter-factual timeline?

Russian losses alone are now considered to be about 45 - 49 million, soldiers and civilians combined. The war was a lot more devastating for the USSR that most people.
One recent scholar says the Soviet system was doomed by WW2, just the sheer loss of capital. It took another 45 years to manifest itself, but the Germans won the Cold War as much as the Americans did. That's his theory anyway. It didn't help Stalin killed another 15 million on top of what the Germans killed.

Japanese problem was that they had to take oil, which meant attacking the oil in the Far East, which meant fighting the West. FDR cut off exports and when the Japanese made their go decision they had six months to bone dry. Long term, helping the Germans beat Russia and sharing in the Russian oil might have worked better but they didn't have the time or trusted the Germans that much.

My point was that the German military was stoned out of their minds as was a yuge percentage of the population for most of the war, and that they really did stack bodies far out of proportion to their own losses, particularly with the two weapons I mentioned.
With the final point derived from those thoughts that the General population may have thought the war was going much better than it was, with quite a shock coming once Germany's borders were overrun.

After rolling over Western Europe, thinking they could do that with Russia was truly fantasyland. Russians have never been very good at initiating conflict outside their borders (see: Present-day Ukraine), but when defending Mother Russia, they are full-on mama bears.
