The Morning Rant: Thomas Paine and the Ongoing Problem of Hereditary Government

July 4 - Fife and Drum.JPG

Happy Independence Day!

On this sacred day, I’d like to briefly discuss Thomas Paine’s thoughts on hereditary governmental power. Though we are blessed to be free of a hereditary monarchy, our government is infested with a ruling class who enjoy inherited powers. I doubt Mr. Paine would endorse America having a class of political royalty.

Paine’s pamphlet “Common Sense,” published in early 1776, may be the most important document in our country’s founding, outside of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Paine published it anonymously, finding a brave printer who risked being “cancelled” for printing a work advocating for unapproved freedoms. Common Sense went viral in the buildup to the July 1776 meeting of the Continental Congress at which American independence was declared.

Common Sense sold 120,000 copies in its first three months, and by the end of the Revolution, 500,000 copies were sold. An estimated 20 percent of colonists owned a copy of the revolutionary booklet.

An important theme in Paine’s advocacy for American independence was that the inherited power of the British government was an illegitimate way to choose who should lead government.

From a chapter of Common Sense titled “Of Monarchy and Hereditary Succession”:

But it is not so much the absurdity as the evil of hereditary succession which concerns mankind.

Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

When I read those words I’m not thinking of British royalty, instead I start thinking about people named Romney, Kennedy, Cheney, Clinton, Bush, Gore, Landrieu, Murkowski, etc.

Since 1976 there have only been two presidential elections in which neither of the tickets included the child or spouse of a former Senator, Governor, or President. (Those two elections were 2020: Trump-Pence-Biden-Harris; and 2008: Obama-Biden-McCain-Palin.) But don’t forget that McCain was the child of a famous US Navy Admiral. And some years we even had two nepots on the tickets. (GHWBush / Gore in 1992; GWBush / Gore in 2000.)

In addition, administration of the permanent bureaucratic state is littered with the offspring of the powerful and connected.

After American independence, Thomas Paine continued to expound on the danger of inherited power, discussing the peril of political inheritance beyond monarchy to offices such as magistrate or legislator. From “The Rights of Man”:

All hereditary government is in its nature tyranny. An heritable crown, or an heritable throne, or by what other fanciful name such things may be called, have no other significant explanation than that mankind are heritable property. To inherit a government, is to inherit the people, as if they were flocks and herds.

Do we need a stronger evidence of the absurdity of hereditary government than is seen in the descendants of those men, in any line of life, who once were famous? Is there scarcely an instance in which there is not a total reverse of the character? It appears as if the tide of mental faculties flowed as far as it could in certain channels, and then forsook its course, and arose in others. How irrational then is the hereditary system, which establishes channels of power, in company with which wisdom refuses to flow! By continuing this absurdity, man is perpetually in contradiction with himself; he accepts, for a king, or a chief magistrate, or a legislator, a person whom he would not elect for a constable.

I don’t have a solution to propose today, other than the power we have at the ballot box to vote against heirs to family political dynasties. In a local primary race for my county’s mayor, there were three Republican candidates, one of whom was the child of a former Congressman. For that reason alone, I ruled him out and then chose from the other two candidates. (Sadly, the former Congressman’s child won by getting Democrats to vote in the GOP primary. The problem of Democrats choosing Republican candidates in primaries is a post for another day.)

In my ideal political world, having a famous political name would be a liability, not an asset. George P. Bush’s recent loss in the Texas GOP primary for Attorney General is a hopeful sign.

With talk of Joe Biden not running for re-election, and with Liz Cheney looking to run for President as something other than a Republican, I’ve got an idea for the Democrats’ 2024 dream ticket: Liz Cheney / Hunter Biden. That might finally cure Americans of our addiction to political royalty.

History Of The American Revolution In A Song

Okay, now let’s celebrate American independence with a little Revolutionary-era music: “Soldier’s Joy”

My grandpa played Jimmie Driftwood music for me when I was a little child, including this old tune. As I learned American history, the lyrics of this song fell into place.

The girls in Boston are dancin' tonight
The gall-derned Redcoats are holding them tight
When we get there we will show them how
but that ain't a doin' us no good now.

There goes General Washington
He's got his horse in a sweeping run
The barefooted boys are a beggin' to fight, and
we're gonna cross the Delaware River tonight.

Old Burgoyne in the wilderness
Got his army in an awful mess
The farmers got mad at the British and Huns, and
captured ten thousand son of a guns.

John Paul Jones in an old tin can
Scoured the ocean like a fightin' man
The British said Paul are you ready to strike
and Paul said I'm just beginnin' to fight.

General Washington and Rochambeau
Drinkin' their wine in the campfire's glow
Big Dan Morgan came a gallopin' in, and said
We got Cornwallis in the old Cowpens.

Wake up buddy have you heard the news
Grandma Britain got an awful bruise
The Redcoats cried and cursed Yorktown, while the
band played The World's Turned Upside Down.

“Soldier’s Joy” (Jimmie Driftwood)

The spirit of ’76 still burns within us. Have a blessed and celebratory Independence Day.

9 I recommend the book "The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the Birth of Right and Left", by Yuval Levin. It contrasts the approaches taken by the two men towards revolution, basically slow (Burke) and fast (Paine). It really makes you think, and if you're like me, sometimes you'll lean one way, and sometimes the other.

I think the correct answer as to which approach is correct is "it depends on the circumstances". As a general proposition, though, I favor Burke.

10 Today is "Shoot All The Guns Day" at the Rancho. Everything gets broken out, cleaned, inspected, and fired. Then cleaned again and put back where it belongs. It's a helluva lot better than fireworks, and rewarding in it's own sense: These tools guarantee our freedom from tyranny. It's best to bring them out on Independence Day as a reminder.

Twelve years in federal elected office and you're out. Six House terms, or two Senate terms, or any combination that adds up to twelve.

Twelve and out -- find something else to do!

And bring back the spoils system -- purge the bureaucracy's ranks whenever the parties exchange the Presidency.

15 It was, I think, radio guy Mark Levin who wrote a book a few years ago about just how incestuous the relationships are between the federal government (both politicians and bureaucrats) and the press (title was "Unfreedom of the Press" IIRC). Judges married to reporters.... news executives married to bureaucrats.... I've forgotten specific examples but when I read it I was shocked at how pervasive these relationships are in DC. Yet it's never spoken of.... evidence of deep rot.

In Kali, for instance, you have the masses voting to take monies from those with properties in the form of bonds; I vote, you work and pay. As Fredrick Douglas would say, that's slavery.

27 19 - Archimedes: There is a cadre of good folks who think DeSantis is our best option in 2024 (NOT with Noem as VP). But IMHO they're discounting that if both Trump and DeSantis run in the primaries (against each other) this would be a bloodbath; Trump would win inevitably but DeSantis would give him a run for his money. This would be bad for the general election. I hope the two men (who are both great men IMHO) will get together behind the scenes and agree that they CANNOT run against each other. The risk to the movement would be too great. I'm of the opinion that because of what he's done and because of the risks he's taken... if Trump wants to run he deserves the nomination.

45 This topic of inherited power has always been a big problem for human societies, and I was surprised to learn that this had a huge bearing on the use of Eunuchs in ancient middle eastern and chinese cultures. The ruling families of those cultures decided early on the eunuchs were the only men who could be trusted to serve the State without trying to carve out personal fiefdoms, wealth, and power for their families. (since they rather astutely observed that most men will always be far more loyal to their own families than to the rulers)

These servants were also generally removed from their homes and raised by the State from an early age, so that the State became the only "family" they would ever know or ever have. A cruel system, but very effective.

46 To this point, the political fates have cursed Joe Biden with the same bad luck that afflicted Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton and other founding fathers at their most ambitious but least effective - but without granting him anything close to their storied accomplishments or historical legacy. Is that just an ironic coincidence, a minor plot twist in the American story, or a telling symbol of the ultimate failure of the American experiment and the corruption of both our political parties? History will have to answer that question.

48 Monarchies often get a bad rap. Many were adequate, and I believe it is the 'great' monarchs that tend to set a kingdom up for collapse. They upset the balance of powers and accomplish a great deal in their life, but the new institutions they create to run a country are not easily controlled by successors. Replacing the rivalrous nobility and clergy with a subordinate bureaucracy always seems to end poorly in a few generations.

If I could see only a single item on someone's job application, IMHO owning a Marx statue would be the most disqualifying item for any job I would hire them to perform. Much less put them in charge of all of the Western economies!

That sounds like a great day!

Let the kids shoot a bottle rocket at a steel target. Then let them shoot a Roman Candle. Then let them shoot the .22 rifle. (I know which one will be clanging steel!)

66 42 - I hear ya. I meant Trump deserves it in the sense that he's shown me real, tangible results in a federal office (as opposed to the state level where DeSantis has been amazing). Operating in DC (compared to Tallahassee) is like moving up from high school football to the NFL; there's no comparison. That entire leviathan known as the deep state (or administrative state) is out to destroy any conservative from day one. Trump has felt that (Has he learned? I think so but I'm not 100% sure) while DeSantis has not. That is why I think Trump "deserves" it.... should've used a better word...

76 This is a very good post about the true nature of "royalty". The US, unfortunately, has burdened itself with multiple generations of inherited aristocracy. To Buck's list, I would add the Dingells. Unfortunately, due to redistricting, I have been placed within the Duchy of Dingell and it's about a D+30 congressional seat. Sigh.

The real issue with government isn't so much who the head of state is. A constitutional monarchy like the Westminster system can be very good, if you elect the right people to the government. Margaret Thatcher certainly wasn't an aristocrat, however Winston Churchill was.

In the old days, what little Canadian "aristocracy" there was tended to be pretty benign (e.g. Vincent Massey, Robert Stanfield), but then it just got pretty mediocre with Paul Martin. The latest incarnation, who Mark Steyn likes to call Jacindra Trudeau, is a total disaster and marks a full blown acceptance of the US style royalty system. The only cure will be if the electorate wakes up. I hold no hope for that in the Demented Dominion.

If you look into the history of the colleges and college graduation it had always been dominated by the aristocracy. Not that the aristocrats were incapable, but they were generally aristocrats. American aristocracy has always been informal but it doesn't seem to have made much difference, other than nearly everyone believing they are middle class. There's some social mobility, but that was true in the days of formal aristocracy as well.

This is the way it appears to me also. I would be considered evangelical. The practice of not being alone with the opposite sex is a practice many Christians have adopted because the world became crazy and there were also some imposters in the ministry making everyone else look bad. Better to not even give the appearance of impropriety. Pence's practice of that standard was like a "dog whistle" to evangelicals and perhaps was regarded as a hedge against complaints about Trump's multiple marriages.

Pence had a mark against him in my mind for folding on religious rights. But I was willing to give him another chance.

Trump would have to change his address again, to a different state. Bush/Cheney were both TX residents, so Dick put his house up for sale and moved to Wyoming. This was crucial, in that the then TX 32 electoral voters would not have been able to vote for both P and VP.

Thus DJT continues to be the lightning rod for the Daily Two Minutes Hate on every network until closer to the election.

It was discussed briefly this morning, but what will likely happen is that false insurrection charges will be laid on the man who won 2020 in a landslide at the same time gas has intentionally been brought to $10+ per gallon. Trump is barred from running, people are unable to afford gas, food, etc, and the folks they have been trying to agitate for years finally bite

I don't know the next stage, but it won't be pleasant. I'm sure PATRIOT Act II is already written and ready to address the deplorables, though. They ARE domestic terrorists, after all.

227 if Trump wants to run he deserves the nomination.

Only if Trump has internalized truly that in government there are not only a few bad apples who you can remove. If he realizes that the entire structure is rotten. I really haven't seen a lot to make me think Trump has. DeSantis seems a lot more focused and lethal. But I realize that I don't really understand the mind of the vague middle voter. Not sure if all the anti-Trump lying has hurt him too much with them or if the obscurity of DeSantis to them hurts him too much.
