Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

I liked this intro from last year so I'm using it again.

Two hundred and forty-six years ago we told King George to kiss our colonial asses and declared our independence from Great Britain. We were then 13 colonies with a precarious toe-hold on a largely unexplored continent, and had just told the world's largest military and economic power to bite the big one. With hostile indians (woo-woo) on one side, and the British Navy on the other, we drafted our Declaration of Independence and took care of bidness. Thirteen years later we had a shiny new Constitution and Bill of Rights and were on our way...

OK. So perhaps we haven't been the best stewards of the incredibly precious gift of freedom fought for, and then entrusted to us, by our forefathers. Perhaps it's time to stiffen our resolve and revisit some of the basic concepts which compelled our revolution in the first place. The idea of America isn't dead, but our management of the enterprise has certainly left much to be desired. I still think it's good and proper to loudly celebrate our independence, not only as a celebration itself but also as a warning to tyrants, both foreign and domestic. What was done once can be done again.

Happy Independence Day everyone. Yes, I know it's not technically celebrated until tomorrow, but 'round these parts it's a multi-day holiday.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Feature Gun(s)
Last week we had a short discussion of the .380 ACP as a carry gun. Maybe not a suitable candidate for going into heavy combat, but something to grab when you run to 7-11 for late nite snacks, or as a backup weapon. Here is one that I use for that very purpose and carry in my man-satchel next to my laptop on my way back and forth to the office, the Sig Sauer P238. It's 5.5 inches long and weighs 15.2 oz.

This Sig is a very sturdy all stainless-steel pistol and is small enough to carry in a front pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis holster, in size P6 which is also bigly recommended.

15 ounces too hefty for you? Want to go even smaller and lighter? Well allow me to introduce you to the Ruger LCP. Made from space age glass-filled nylon, this scrappy little fella is is 5.2 inches long, tips the scales at 9.6 ounces, and also fits perfectly into the DeSantis Nemesis holster.

Q: Weasel, are the .380s snappy? I read on the internet .380s are snappy.
A: Why yes, yes they are snappy.

But let me ask you something, do you really think you're going to notice that in a life-or-death situation? Both have a six round capacity and are definitely better than throwing your Slim-Jims and Prune Fizz at an attacker.

If you need more convincing, here is another video on the .380 as a self-defense weapon.

As concealed carry of weapons by law abiding citizens becomes more widely available, you need to think about options, and for many a small and highly concealable pocket gun will be an excellent choice. The point is to become proficient with and carry the weapon when you are out and about. Not only when you are walking through the bad side of town at midnight with twenty-dollar bills hanging out of your pockets, but whenever you go out.

As society becomes more and more unhinged, and I am afraid that's going to continue to be the case going forward, you need to be prepared to defend yourself. That means being a gun owner, buying ammunition, and training periodically. Think of gun ownership as insurance against the unknown and unforeseeable.

Range Reports

First up, our most excellent pal and delightful 'ette Screaming in Digital sends a report on a recent trip to the range.

I went to the range Tuesday in honor of Jesse's birthday. This was only my second time going to the range alone. The first time didn't go well. I took my 1911, the P365, and Jesse's S&W Model 28-3.

20 rounds in the 1911. The top photo is from my previous outing a few weeks ago for comparison. The second photo is from today. I started at 5 yards and moved out to 7 yards. I shot 5 rounds 1 hand lefty (I pushed 3 of those to the right) and a couple rounds 2 hand righty, but with the left eye. Practicing with snap caps seems to be helping!
Next were 12 rounds in the P365. This target is too shameful to share, BUT my last 4 rounds were better than the first 8. I decided to stop there and work with snap caps at home. Or sell it. Whatever. Not gonna let it bother me tonight.

Holy Shitballs! Will you look at this target!

12 rounds of .38 Special in the S&W. This is possibly my best target ever, except for that crazy one high & right. I love this revolver. It's the first gun that Jesse bought new, in 1986, which I believe is the year this model was discontinued. I think it was his favorite handgun and it's certainly my favorite.
It will never be as good without Jesse in the next lane with one of his rifles, but I was happy with this outing.

Very nicely done, SiD!! Glad to see you're going to the range. You are really improving quickly, and your shooting would definitely make Jesse proud.

Next up, our pal Nevada Dave really brings the fancy sauce with his 1,000-yard shot video.

As you were talking about windage, elevation and ballistic calculators I thought I'd pass along a video of some thousand-yard shots with my 300 PRC. I was shooting 225 grain ELD bullet traveling at 2993 fps, time of flight is 1.245 seconds, drop is 261.53 inches. On those two shots I dialed 5.9 mil elevation and held 0.4R mil for wind, spin drift is 0.15L. It hits with 1877 ft lbs of energy at 1000 yds. The jugs are 2.7 qt so about 6"x6" at the widest point. I use a Kestrel 5700 with applied ballistics. I zero at 100 yards and chrono with a lab radar, but this gun was also trued at 1000 yards.
The video was shot with a Nikon p950.
P.S. My daughter (now sixteen) built her first long range rifle! She's been hammering the 2 MOA target at a mile with it! Crazy proud dad!

Guys and Gals - watch the video for two things; the bullet trace on its way to the target, which is really the shock wave on the tip of a supersonic projectile as the bullet itself is too small to see, and the mirage effect in the air which is used to determine wind speed and direction. See them? Do you see the bullet trace and mirage? Based on the video, what do you think the wind is doing?

Next our pal Javems gives us the 9-1-1 on his 30-40 Krag.

This is my 30-40 Krag. It is the first smokeless powder rifle adopted by the U.S. Army and was developed in the early 1890s. It was patterned after the Norwegian Krag-Jorgensen bolt action rifle. There is also a carbine version. The case is rimmed, and the round is .30 caliber (.308 ). It originally was charged 40 grains of smokeless powder. There is a magazine on the right side of the receiver that hinges open and accepts five rounds. It's easy to load, you can just dump the rounds in, pointy end forward, and when you close the cover, the rounds align properly. One neat feature is that using a lever on the left side of the receiver, forward of the safety, you can isolate the magazine and load one round at a time into the receiver. It was used basically from the mid 1900s up until it was replaced by the 1903 and 1917 rifles.

The sights vary. My receiver was made in 1903 but my rear sight in an 1896 model. It is a blade sight and can be adjusted for range from 100 yards to, a wildly optimistic, 1800 yards. The blade slides forward to 600 yards and then a dual rail carries another rear blade that can be raised for additional range. There is no windage adjustment with this sight. I haven't read any pre-WWI infantry tactics. Perhaps they used it for area fire at the longer ranges.

I haven't used that many bolt-action rifles, but the Krag has a remarkably smooth action. I haven't shot it in decades but have the ability to load some rounds now, so when the weather cools down, I'll take it out to the range.

So You Bought a Handgun

Recently we have learned of several new gun owners among the commenters here, and I want to again offer my congratulations to them. You have taken the first steps in what I've found to be a remarkably fun hobby. I have made countless friends all around the world as a result of my association with the shooting sports, and learned a lot of things about guns, shooting and even myself in the process. By carrying a firearm, I am also taking steps to prevent myself, my loved ones, and my property from danger at the hands of predators. As you move along and gain confidence as gun owners, I hope you will do the same.

Anyhow, I recently received the following short article from Winchester Ammunition on next steps after purchasing a handgun. It's a pretty basic list but steps you need to have covered.

One item that isn't really covered is safety and proficiency. I strongly recommend finding a more experienced gun owner to help on the first range trip(s) to make sure everything goes smoothly. Later you might consider lessons or other training. Questions? Ask them here. We have lots of experienced gun owners waiting to help!

P22 Part Dos
Last week we looked at the Walther P22, a small semi-automatic pistol in .22LR. I mentioned that mine has always behaved itself by reliably feeding and ejecting virtually any ammunition I used, since these pistols have something of a reputation for being finicky. I guess a lot of it has to do with quality control at the ammo factory, and sometimes with the weapon and ammunition design compatibility. Yes, they are all supposed to work together, but sometimes that doesn't happen reliably. Our pal PMRich sends in a photo comparing a couple of popular .22 LR ammo types.

Do you see it? Do you see the difference PMRich is talking about? It is virtually unnoticeable unless you're really looking for it. That is enough to make a difference in some guns. If it happens to you, don't feel special. It's fairly common and most shooters adapt by finding what works in their guns and sticking with it. I will mention that I typically have more trouble with the Federal Value Pack ammo than the CCI line in a variety of guns.

20 Evening everyone!!

I am still over the moon on the decisions that SCOTUS handed down in NYSR&PA v Bruen which tells the State and in my case NYC that I have a RIGHT to carry outside my home. I think it also might lead the way for the New York State unSAFE act to be declared unconstitutional. This will let me be able to purchase a regular AR-15 with most anything that I want on it.

Other laws that may be knocked down might be the magazine capacity ban which limits all magazines I own to only 10 rounds.

We have to keep on pushing!!!!

I think i got lucky last week at Mom's place after Dad passed. i had tracked down (yes, as in really truly tracked) where Dad died in the field and had put Mom & Smash in the 4x4 to take Mom ther to say goodbye. while we were down hill and out of siht of Dad's cabin, sister's boyfriend/convict broke into Dad's cabin. nephew was entering the property at the gate and saw the convict do this. he called my cell and told me then proceeded up to the cabin as quick as he could close the gate.

i left Smash & Mom, and raced the 4x4 back up to the cabin as convict was a primary cause of the situation that had Dad's dementia in overdrive. convict spotted nephew coming, and scarpered away off, i did not see the convict leave. i arrived at the cabin, and proceeded to clear it with 1911 locked and cocked, safety off.

cabin was empty.

so. texas and not my own property. did i get lucky? i know damned good and well i was stupid.

42 A snub air weight in .38+p is snappy. I doubt many standard autoloaders are as bothersome.

But I still have the lightest out there that is not a novelty, the Keltec p32. Some will say why not go with the 3AT? It is a fair question, but after years of good service it is not something I am willing to give up. If I had to decide today, for sure the Ruger.

43 CBD if you're here, my email is borked. You can't go wrong with a steel compact 1911 .45scp. Mrs. E's first carry back when Texas went CCW was a Colt Defender, light alloy frame and kicked like a white-eye mule. Don't go that route. She currently carries a Kimber MicroNine and is happy with it. Of course you are aware Duncanthrax will hammer your tit for not carrying a service size 1911 but whatever.

45 Mrs. SOB and I have matching LCPs - hers resides in her nightstand, and mine is my Walmart gun when I'm in shorts and T shirt. The DeSantis Nemesis works really well with the LCP in the front pocket. I don't much like the trigger pull on the LCP, but as Weasel says it beats a Slim Jim. If I had my druthers, I'd carry a Colt .380 Government. A friend loaned me his for a while and I really, really like it.

I have room for an 800-yard target. My son is a good "focus" athlete. If he chooses to work for it, I think he can get that target.

(All of my kids need a better instructor.)

Remembering that it's a purely social piece, as long as they're all minute of torso at 20 yards or so I'd put a few hundred rounds through before making any decision one way or the other.

And that last target and story genuinely made me smile. Thanks for sharing it.

61 Weasel! Horde! I have a BONUS range report!

My friend and I went to the outdoor range yesterday. Perfect Wyoming summer day and NO ONE ELSE there... a few trucks going to or from the canyon range, but just us 2 lonely gals at the pistol range. So we proceeded to have a blast with my 1911, the S&W model 28-3 pictured above, her FN 9mm and Taurus .22. She wasn't happy with the trigger pull on the FN but obliterated her targets with the Taurus. My 1911 wasn't happy with some of the ammo I brought -- I haven't even put 100 rounds through it yet, so probably still breaking in. Had so much fun with the revolver. I'm afraid I'll have to fight Jesse's son for that one, so maybe I should enjoy it while I can.

After shooting we went to 3 gun stores, replenishing ammo and targets... I guess this is better than a shoe buying habit?

This is why I wish .32 ACP platforms were more widely available. John Browning designed both cartridges to be able to use the same size frame so that manufacture would be even more efficient.

But in the US, .32 ACP fell out of favor and so those versions were discontinued. However, if you can find a .32 version of a PP, PPK or FN1910, the .32 is much easier to shoot.

I got a Keltec p32 for my wife a few years back. She hates the very long trigger pull.

Does yours do that, or did I get her a semi-lemon?

(It does go bang every time. However, I have had several people shoot it that experienced FTE. I think they were limp-wristing it?)

I had a Shield that I liked a lot but I never could shoot well. I would hit what I was shooting at, but I was never happy with any of the targets or range outings. I got a P365XL and the first two magazines out of it were better than any of the hundreds of magazines I'd put through the Shield. Some guns just don't fit some people. That's why they make more than one. Good luck.

80 Yes, I did go to the range last week and had some fun playing with an Astra 300 in .380 (or should I say 9mm Corto?).

This is a weapon designed to be shot using only one hand. I did some self-defense drills with it, and it's one of those archaic designs that points naturally. Loaned it to a friend who is quite experienced and he was impressed by how handy it was. It's all-steel, so not too snappy, either.

I also played with an HK P2000 in .40 which was so good as to be boring.

82 I have a legit gun question.

I bought a Ruger LCP II yesterday. Apparently, a lot of people were buying guns yesterday, the background check took 2 hours.

Anyway, got it home, and went to load the 6 round magazine. Well, with 6 rounds in the mag, I can't get the mag to seat into the gun. Took a round out to make it 5 rounds, and it goes in fine. This is telling me there is an issue with the spring in the mag, it won't fully depress when loaded. And yes, I can get 6 rounds in, but apparently when the mag goes in, it is supposed to be depressed a bit further, and it just won't work.

Anything I can do about this? Gunsmith or contact Ruger?

83 45 Mrs. SOB and I have matching LCPs - hers resides in her nightstand, and mine is my Walmart gun when I'm in shorts and T shirt. The DeSantis Nemesis works really well with the LCP in the front pocket. I don't much like the trigger pull on the LCP, but as Weasel says it beats a Slim Jim. If I had my druthers, I'd carry a Colt .380 Government. A friend loaned me his for a while and I really, really like it.

91 I started to watch a video this week by a woman about her carry styles and what she's gone through. She started off talking about her Sticky Holster and how she would never use it for a holster.

Then she proceeded to show how she just shoved a POCKET HOLSTER into her waistband. Of course it fell out when you moved, dingleberry! It's sticky so it will stay in your POCKET, not inside your WAISTBAND. I stopped watching partway through that.

97 78 FYI, the NAA I have, with the "long" 1.5" barrel provides a blazing 800 fps and about 43 FP with Stingers. Not much but will gain a bad guys attention. Muzzle blast is a little sharp

If it is a brand new gun I would put about 200 rounds thru it and see if things loosen up a bit and if she runs right, accurate, etc. then reassess.

I don't have a .380 like that but I carry a .38 in a similar holster. It all goes in the front pocket and the holster keeps it in position and breaks up the obvious "print" of the weapon (probably saves your pocket stitching from the barrel, too).

117 Had an excellent day at the range yesterday with my 1911 expert LazyMessenger and my mentor MAE.

We shot some pistols side by side and did a new target drill which was quite the challenge. The guys are awesome.

Every new gun I’ve ever bought was very hard to load a full mag initially.
I still prefer to insert full mags into my Glock 26 only if the slide is locked back. Have to really rap the bottom of the mag otherwise.

120 Continuing to tread my slow path pack to the range.

The S&W Model 317 lightweight .22 revolver arrived, and I'm already infatuated with it. It fits my giant hand just fine, and is so lightweight I can hardly believe it. It also just screams high quality, and I love the green dot sight.

It's sort of hard to take seriously, because it's so, well, adorable. It's like a perfectly made kid's cap gun. Cannot wait to shoot it. However, that's waiting on the arrival of Mrs. Splunge's G48, which should be along this week. Her compromised finger can fire the 317, but only single-action. That might change when we get many rounds through it.

Other supplies are arriving this week, including ammo and targets and a gadget to help me load magazines. Already dug out an old gun thread I remembered and got my hands on a Competitive Dynamics range bag, which is of course just as nice as Weasel said it was.

Congrats to SiD for that 38 special target. Not surprised. SiD is clearly a decent and improving shooter and the S and W model 28 is a gem. I've never seen this tested, but an N-frame 357 mag should be able to fire approximately 50 bazillion 38 specials before accuracy falls off. Double that if using cast bullets.

131 Have been shopping 1911s for a while. Local gun shop has had two great used buys BUT both were 9mm. No sale.
Went in this week - another used 9mm. However, they had a received shipment of Kimbers and Springfields. I relieved them of a Garrison model. No range yet, probably Wednesday. Been loading bullets all week. Also spent day ordering mags, gun case and a holster.
Oh yeah, I am going canoeing tonight.

Alito was great.

It's funny because as noted in the opinion, the lawsuit is meaningless for the 43 states that don't mindlessly persecute gun owners.

I've actually tried to discuss this with gun control fanatics, and they can't explain why (for example) Indiana refusing to ban guns is the cause of Chicago's violent crime. I mean if guns cause killing by their very present, why do the ones in Indiana have to travel to another state to do their violence?

The Dems who run those states are behaving exactly like the coward who can't stand up to his boss, so he goes home and bullies his family and pets.

140 Greetings all! Happy Independence Day weekend and let's all try to make our forefathers proud by fighting communists and tyrants.
I have been to the range twice in the last 2 weeks getting used to my P365. I am finding that it is shooting about 5 inches low at 21 feet. Consistently about 5 inches or so. So as a defense weapon, I would need to aim for vocal chords to hit center of mass. Can't say I like that. I understand Sig sells different height sights to help dial in aim point. It's a shame to have to spend more money after the initial expense. Maybe I stick with the compact 1911 as a carry gun. At least it hits point of aim

143 Interesting conversation with one of staff in the local not-particularly-busy Cabela's today. He was straightening up the ammo isle. I remarked how the supply seemed to be coming back. (On the plus side, there was some .38 Special, and the odd box or two of Speer. On the negative side, no .4x Magnum of any kind, and no bulk (> 20 round) boxes of 5.56.)

He said it was nothing like a week ago, when it even better stocked, and they thought supply might be starting to outpace demand (both for ammo and gubs), and that in the last 7 days demand is again outpacing supply. He said lots of people are buying, with most sensing that "something isn't right", although very few could (or would, perhaps) articulate exactly what.

153 Yesterday I went to Ft Jackson for Independence Day fireworks along with many, many other people. Several thousand of them were trainees of the United States Army. They were young. We ask so much of them and somehow we think the right thing to do is tell them their country hates them and that they hate each other. I take solace in the fact that they are GIs and probably aren't listening.

It was a wonderful show in front of a wonderful crowd and they played Toby Keith's American Soldier which made it all dusty and closed with Proud to be American totally unironically. Cynicism light is off for a bit, y'all. God Bless 'Merica.

The 'ettes in the DMV MGC did try my Bond Arms .357/.38. None of them could get that trigger pull figured out (down and back is NOT instinctive) and all were afraid it would fly out of their hand if fired. It's a bit crazy. (But it does work for me in ankle carry.)

I was at the local gun show yesterday and there was a new vendor who had pallets of ammo set up and was selling it by the case for prices that were (under the circumstances) reasonable.

Gun shows seem to be a lagging indicator on price these days. They were during Covid as well, particularly for the lower-volume stuff. Apart from that vendor, all the ammo was higher than at the local Dunhams, and they are not be any means cheap.

My sense is that several factors are influence the ammo supply. The first is that all the plants are now operational. The second is that low-volume calibers were pulled from production and everything went into making 9mm and 5.56 for a while. Combine that with the end of the stimulus checks and you're looking a glut in those calibers. I expect that to fade as lines are shifted into some of the lesser demand calibers.

169 Javems' post on the Krag has my mouth watering. I love old military bolt action rifles, especially with cast bullet handloads. Comfortable to shoot, inexpensive to reload, and damn accurate at modest distances (under 300 yards). The only reason I don't have a Krag is because I haven't found an affordable one in good enough condition and because I swore a mighty oath not to get a new to me caliber. That oath could evaporate if the right example came along.

Everything Javems said in praise of the Krag are the same I've been reading about for decades: easy to reload, that single shot selector, smooth action, and accurate.

170 The Taurus Slim I kinda forgot I had is working out nicely as an everyday carry gun. IWB holster of unknown brand worn in small of the back. The Taurus being, well, slim is comfortable back there, and I can draw right or left handed if in a bad footing situation (use a cane with right hand). My SCCY feels fat in comparison, and the old G17 downright huge. Down to one SCCY, gave a good deal to somebody in need of a nightstand gun.

We did a comparison:
Taurus G3c TORO vs S&W M&P 1.0 compact, vs S&W 2.0 Compact vs PSA Dagger.

Testers were me, Lazy Messenger and Nurse Ratched.
Ammo was mostly Tula MAXX 9mm brass cased ammo.

3 of the pistols have hinged triggers rather than a trigger safety (Taurus is the odd man out). First...no malfunctions, all guns ran fine.
Second, we tested guns for slow fire and rapid fire on IDPA targets at 7 yards.

I did two planning exercises there in 2018 and 2019.

I was at Barksdale for a week in 2014 or so. The A/C at my quarters was dumping condensation into my room - half the floor was covered in water. They didn't have anything left for SNCOs so I got put in with the junior officers. It was a step up, to be sure.

181 Also, I have resolved the PSA $89 Heritage Rough Rider dilemma. No, I did not buy both the 4.75 inch barrel and 6.5 inch barrel pistol. I apologize in advance as this involves math.

Current sale price of the HRR is $109 for certain models. Heritage (which is a Ruger brand) is offering a $20 rebate. Makes an HRR from PSA $89 plus tax! How could you not?

Well. $89. Plus $20 shipping. Plus $25 FFL transfer makes the cost $134 - or $154 before rebate. That means a retail price of less than $152 ($2 for the background check) locally is the same price because it is a manufacturer rebate. If I go to the gun show next weekend it costs $15 to get in, if I were to find one THERE selling for $137 or less - and I have seen them at $119-$129 - I am still ahead. Alternatively, Cabela's has it for $149 and I am not at risk for the gun show ticket and it is still less than getting it from PSA. Not as cool as an $89 gun but cheaper!

The PSA dagger had a (green) dot, the rest were all irons.
The Nurse did not like the dot at first, but...boy did she get into it. By the second magazine, she was laying rounds right on top of each other.
The Dagger had the best trigger, followed by the Taurus, for slow fire. The Dagger and M&P 2.0 were the most comfortable to shoot. The G3c and the M&P 1.0 had similar recoil and handling characteristics, both also have 12 round magazines.

Rapid fire, evaluations changed. The M&P 1.0 did very very well in rapid fire. Lazy Messenger thought the G3c was good as well, saying it would 'run fast' and he did do well with it. The trigger break was 'cleaner' with the G3c, with the M&P triggers being more 'mushy' with a more vague wall.
For me, the M&P's are actually good combat pistols, with the stock (non APEX) triggers, they aren't super accurate but they group well enough and under stress/timer, they put rounds in the A zone just fine.
The smaller pistols are subject to physics: lighter 9mm pistols are more snappy. But the G3c is more easy to control and more accurate in slow fire.
Remarkably, the highest ranked pistols were the cheapest: the G3c and the PSA dagger.

Reloading requires all the components though, and I'm not sure primers are all that available.

For a lot of folks, dropping hundreds of dollars at once on ammo is a big ask. I recommend dropping by your local store a couple of times a month and just buy a box or two. Before you know it, you'll have built up a decent stockpile without feeling like you've broken the bank.

Some of the scarcer stuff is starting to come back in limited quantities. I'm hoping the growing glut on 9mm and the fact that these sell out within hours will convince the heavy hitters to switch some lines back to them, or increase the run they do before switching back.

The topic this week of Concealed Carry is convenient. I applied early last week for a CCW in Santa Clara County (i.e., San Jose) CA.

The woman minding the window at the SCC Sheriff's office was helpful, but slightly out-of-sorts. Apparently, they have only one guy doing CCW work, and have had about 500 applications since the SCOTUS decision.

I think CA is considering legislation ... I think the Sheriff will try to slow-roll me, as they did that day after Peruta. when I ask for application status in a couple of days.

This time, I'll point out that Congress or another SCOTUS case would be needed, and nothing is pending, so there's no grounds for a delay.

There was a period under Obama when ammo prices spiked. My kids had swim classes at the time, so every week I'd take them to class, and go over to the store and buy one box of ammo.

By the time their class was done, I had 1,000 rounds on hand. It adds up if you just keep at it.

On another note, I spotted a CZ75 compact in the shop at the range. I have a CZ75 clone (Tangfolio EAA Witness full size .45) and it is a sweet shooter. They used to make conversion kits for it in several calibers. I was looking for .22 and 9mm but they must be rare as hen's teeth. So that CZ caught my eye. But $700+ will take a bunch of deliberation and possibly trade in the Sig. Havent made up my mind yet. The Sig is highly concealable. The CZ would be slightly larger but steel frame.

Agreed. The Mauser was stronger than the Krag. Part of the problem was some of the US troops were still using Springfield Trapdoors. I don't know if the distances involved gave an advantage to the Spanish Mauser over the 30/40 Krag.

The stripper clips probably gave the Mauser and advantage on sustained rate of fire. I think I saw some sort of clip for the Krag on Forgotten Weapons, but I can't believe it would work as well.

218 Once in a while, if you happen to like flea markets and garage sales, you might see a box or two of ammo for sale, often for cheap. Scarf it up even if you don't have a gun for it because somebody else does and may need it.

I have a love hate relationship with the P365. My first gub purchase, before I met J; at the time I thought it would likely be my only gun. Easy to operate and feels very comfortable. I have a horrible flinch with it though. I have had good outings with it, especially with J; then the next time I can't hit paper. Had lots of expert coaching (including some from ettes and rons in Texas), which helps tremendously. Snap cap practice will help too. I've put a lot of rounds through but still don't really have the right feel for the trigger pull. It would be an excellent carry gun so I want to become proficient. Also I get easily discouraged but I am stubborn and J would tell me not to give up.

224 My occasional check on primers and powder did not show much good news. This was a very quick check (ammoseek).

Per usual pattern, availability returns before prices start to fall. Primers .... wow. Still 3X "normal" prices for off-brand (or new to this market). Powder, only check my core powders, but better availability, prices higher but not like primers. Might pick up some TAC despite the price. Those 30-06 rounds consume powder voraciously (around 46.5g per round in my case), unlike the pistol powders, which last for years/per jug.

Probably because it's a really bad idea. There is no one testing pressure profiles for that sort of thing, as far as I know. Interesting idea, but I wouldn't try it.

One thing they found was that loading from the top with a stripper clip (be careful if you google that) was a lot faster than loading through the side magazine.

SiD, the most helpful practice I've been able to obtain has been via classes at my local gun range. I've taken Advanced Handgun Tactics, the qualification class to shoot from holster, and Extreme Close Quarter Combat. Those classes have allowed me to practice draw and carry techniques that I ordinarily wouldn't be allowed to use, and have gotten me a much higher comfort level with my gear.

I've had the occasional stove-pipe on ejection, but nothing serious, and I've tried every .22 ammo brand I have (4 or 5) without problems. Nice trigger. Accurate enough to ping steel plate easily at 50yds, intermittently at 100yds.

Before you proceed, check out what Charter Arms has on offer. I have an Undercoverette (the .32 HR Magnum revolver) and I've been very happy with it. It also costs quite a bit less and is very lightweight.

25 ounces (empty) for a carry gun can be a bit much by the end of the day.

250 I have a LCP Custom. Annodized red trigger upgrade. Sits in the wife's Explorer in that exact same holster. 4 mags. Self defense loads. Can carry in loose in shorts.

Also have the Taurus Spectrum .380. Same set up in my truck. This one is a "throwaway."

Thinking...I personally shoot pretty well cross body on my left. Shooting on my right, I tend to throw rounds a little wide. That might be my stance though.

253 "Minute of torso" is exactly the phrase I use to describe my aspiration WRT accuracy shooting a service rifle like the M1 or Mosin-Nagant. At 100-150 yds (which would itself be the upper range of most actual successful engagement use, in combat, AFAIK).

That's why I really enjoy matches with movement, shooting from concealment/cover, and torso-sized steel profile targets.

The M&P Compact is a good .22 auto. Fairly reliable for a .22 auto and if you're already carrying a M&P compact, you have a similar form factor baked in as well.

259 Actually shot a handgun match yesterday. Low round count, but relatively interesting/difficult. Lots of "weak hand only" stages or elements, some moving steel or popper-triggered "peek-a-boo" moving paper targets. Shot the XD9, which I haven't shot in ages (and it showed, a bit).

I have a lot of reloading and shooting I really should do.

But that thought somehow isn't so oppressive, compared, say, to other things I need to do, like clean out the garage, or finish changing the landscaping in one area out front. Go figure.

That's a great question because the airbags go off and you smell what seems to be gunpowder and taste what seems to be gunpowder. I totaled a vehicle and set off all the airbags, staggered out with blood running down my face, and the responding officers thought I'd been shot. Hell, I thought I'd been shot. Nope just run off the the road into a concrete wall sand set off all the airbags.

That was because the National Guard was using what was available. All current rifles went to deploying troops because of the shortage. Prior to the Spanish War, the various state militias were state-funded, leading to wild variations in equipment standards.

AOP - My recollection of airbags, having watched a demo of one going off in one of my automotive classes, is that recovering the propellant is not easy, due to the airbag construction.

I think you will have much better luck using stump remover, drain cleaner and cotton balls. There are YouTube videos demonstrating this. I think that having reasonably strong chemistry experience and skill is a really good choice.

Almost all of the high-energy propellants for rocket fuel, airbags, etc. are highly toxic chemicals.

I think about a half of a lungful of that crap would probably kill you.

Using the propellant as one of the compounds in a toxic gas cocktail would almost certainly be more efficacious during the Burning Times than trying to use it to propel bullets!

276 65 Pillage Idiot, the long pull and trigger reset on the P32 is part of that design. You have to get used to it by shooting it a lot. Also, FTE's are common with people not used to a mouse auto who lim wrist. Both of these issues are tiny hurdles to get over. I think a p32 trigger pull pairs well with Carrie g a wheel gun.

I do recommend Fiocchi 73 grain ball as the most reliable carry ammo.

The reason it is called a "potato digger" is that Browning used a lever action as his basis of the weapon. Of course, he didn't need the whole lever, just part of it. So there's this nub that goes back and forth as it cycles, and if you lower it on a tripod so that you aren't an obvious target, the little arm digs into the dirt - like a potato digger.

Kimber is an interesting manufacturer. They are apparently the largest manufacturer of 1911s in the US.
That means they make a lot of "low end" (MSRP $799) pistols, too. sra blaster and I each have Raptor II which is pricier and very, very nice - comes from the "Custom Shop" which means something not just an entirely marketing situation. BUT - they sell things like the "Custom Carry" which doesn't come from the Custom Shop. Their "low end" pistols are pretty good. Their Custom shop products are very good.

Well, the question arose in my mind since I am parting out a Dodge Dakota. I am pretty certain there is no legal market for used airbags, due to liability concerns. I read ONE report on the 'net where some guy in England used the propellant from an airbag to fire a small missile from a spigot launcher (basically an inside-out mortar).

If I do mess with it, I will wear protective gear, and use long extensions on my screwdrivers.

That's maybe the best 9mm platform I own.* IMI (later became IWI and I think production was moved out of country), too, so made in Israel, which is a neat oddity. Huge, all steel, heavy, and stable and heck. It always reminds me of a 1911 when I'm shooting it. What a great pistol. Thanks again Mark or to whoever recommended it if wasn't you.

* Yes I'll still grab the P95 for a SHTF scenario, but for accuracy and pleasure of shooting the Jericho wins.

I don't know what others do, but my coach encouraged me to do warm-up slow fire at 30 feet and then work into my regular drill. Seems to help.

Wonder how other people handle this??

302 I like the LEM trigger action on my new HK35SK. No safety. No full-cock with the thumb like the DA/SA variant. A half-rack slide cocks it, but the trigger needs a long pull before you feel the wall.

Repetitively firing, you let the trigger out after each discharge, just a tiny bit beyond the wall, and then you go again.

You will not be disappointed. I think there are a few variations. Mine is single action only with a thumb safety like a 1911. I think there are decocker versions, too, but I don't know if they're from the IMI era.

Mine looks like absolute garbage from being thrown in a crate with 500 other 941Fs, but it still oozes quality when you use it. It would take an absurd offer to buy it from me.

They started as high end. As they grew their market share they had to democratize (some might say debase) their product line. I don't think that there has been much grousing about the high end product even after the democratization.

Yep. Slow fire for the first mag, then start drills.

Also dry fire before each stage also helps with flinches, I find.

I have the same trigger on my P200sk and feel pretty much the same. LEM triggers are very personal and it seems that people either love 'em or hate 'em.

I bought mine partly as a DA revolver substitute ... the action mimics a traditional DA and forces me to pay attention, and to improve my trigger work. It's been a good training tool for me ... lord knows I need it. ;-)

I shoot faster now with less accuracy as measured by micrometer I guess, but in general working on a larger volume of fire and get that more accurate.

Load up 5 magazines. Put 1 or 2 dummy rounds into each magazine. Drop all all the mags into your dump pouch, stir gently. Pull magazines from the dump pouch and shove them into your mag carriers without looking - it won't matter if the dummy is the first round if you don't peek. Shoot your drill. When you hit a dummy, tap, rack, and roll (or see below) and continue the mission. It is the best malfunction drill. Do it all the time - whenever you shoot. it's weird to get a malfunction, tap-rack-roll to an empty mag, reload and get another one. By the way, I was trained to roll the gun then whack with the heel of my support hand then grab the slide and rack it. I think it is better.

My buddy and I also discussed whether it's better to start out with our "easy" gun to warm up; I've been doing the opposite, and finishing up with my easy or fun gun to regain some confidence after stinking it up ;-)

329 Blaster ... this was one of the hardest lessons for me. Too many bad training sessions/assumptions as a kid. Like you, I got a lot better with Weasel's advice. Some version of "see it - shoot it" can be helpful.

My coach has been know the come up behind me and simply say "Shoot." And then "Shoot" again if when I'm aiming.

Pulled the Rem 700 in 5.56 out on Sat and started the long process of truing up the ballistics calculator ranging back to 800 mtrs, only got to 400 mtrs before the light became a problem as its winter time and low sun right into the face. Only had to adjust .1 mil elevation down, so happy about that. Will see what happens from 500 to 800 in a week or so.

345 Weasel ... your advice on mechanics is pretty much what's been preached to me. Pretty darn effective. We started doing failure drills again: 2 - body; 1- head. And it was all pure fundamentals. I wasn't thinking, wasn't "aiming," was mostly just waiting on the recoil to settle. Shoot, don't think, kind of thing. Good, solid repeatable results from a 70 year old man with 4 eye surgeries and who knows what else.

Great to hear! Once you begin to commit everything to muscle memory, tighter groups are the natural result. Going to the range and focusing just on making small groups doesn't really get you anywhere. Focusing on fundamentals does.

Best recent VERY in-context example of that the 2A is FOR? The Bundy Ranch Standoff. Not only did the citizens prevail against the heavy-handed Interior Cops, but later prevailed for their cause in court. So weak was the Govt. claim to that land, that an Obama Judge threw it out with prejudice.

Blaster, the Deagle might look cool, but I think the new Colt Python will do a better job of holding its value. One of my co-workers had about $1500 into his .357 Deagle and only got back about $800 when he sold it earlier this year. My two cents.

It's really funny to argue with gun controllers about this. They don't want to admit that there are cultural elements at work, but the know it, and if you are persistent (and approach the matter very delicately), they will basically admit black people can't be trusted with guns.

Speaking of which, didn't the LA Times basically say just that in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling? As if black people couldn't already lawfully own guns?

These people are beyond parody. They are better at projection than my second grade filmstrip machine.

I think the best training option is either some sort of .22 LR revolver (because revolvers are great for new shooters) or the much-loved Beretta Cheetah.

Everyone loves to shoot the Cheetah. Eris almost walked off with it a couple of years ago.

FYI, WWII era M1911A1s have slides that use a weaker steel than today's. As a result, they will crack (aka "catastrophically fail") at some point. Keep in mind that the M1911s were originally tested only to 6,000 rounds before component replacement. Modern shooters can push far beyond those limits today. If you can afford it, retire the old piece and get a new one.

391 It's getting late, but I'll throw in another reminder: Buy snap caps when you buy a gun.

If you get a 9mm, buy the snap caps too. Factor it into the purchase cost.

Not only will these help you run loading/clearing drills, they can help identify situations where something isn't working quite right. If there's a problem ejecting, or feeding from the magazine, you don't want to test that with live ammo. Use snap caps.

397 The Buckmarks really are fantastic little pistols. I looked at one a few years ago that had the grip angle of the 1911, which I thought was a clever way to bring some new shooters over.

I've never owned one but I've shot a bunch, and yeah, if I weren't already fairly satisfied with my .22s I'd buy one in a heartbeat. They were once horrors to disassemble. I hope they've improved that design to make them a bit more user friendly.

There's a video of a 50-something male clerk at a Macy's getting a beat down by a youth while his youth buddy chuckles and films it. The man - the clerk - ended up on the floor taking fists to the face from a young thug shouting "bitch!" at him.

Had that clerk had my Ruger LCP in his pocket in that moment - he'd only be begging for his life on the floor if he CHOSE to be there. The gun makes you an active participant.

I can't speak to that, but I watched a 1000 yard black powder shoot once and I think I was told the round was 30 or so feet off the ground at its highest point, so it would make sense.

Sort of.. The bullet follows a ballistic arc to the target, but he was aimed that high over the horizontal to have the bullet arrive on target given the velocity of the bullet, it's ballistic characteristics, the atmospheric conditions, and the 1000 yd distance.

414 Thanks for the knowledge. I can't imagine aiming so high, but then again I've never shot longer than about 100 yards. In my retirement, if I ever get there, I hope to dig into long distance shooting.

The LCP has some fiddly bits and small springs in the trigger mechanism that would make a Glock aficionado curse, but the Galloway part helped the trigger a lot.
Mine is in 9mm, so I also put in a heavier recoil spring to mitigate recoil and reduce wear on the Tactical Tupperware frame parts.
