Top Story

  • Well, work insanity is finally easing for at least a couple of days. Have a big project kicking off next week and October is likely to be another write-off, but at least I won't be working 18 hour days and moving house at the same time.

These posts will gradually return to their usual schedule and content.

  • It seems like I picked the right week to be on a big city salary with a small town mortgage: The GPU shortage is over. (The Verge)

Do I need a new GPU? There are games I want to play and applications I want to run that can benefit from teraflops of crunching power, but I already have two laptops with RTX 3060 graphics, which while far from high end are perfectly fine for Minecraft and... Also Minecraft.

Still, with GPU prices down 57% since January it's awfully tempting. (Tom's Hardware)

  • In fact, Nvidia, AMD, and Apple are all cutting back on 5nm production for their next-generation parts. (Tom's Hardware)

Funny story 'bout 'maters, before I call it a night, or morning, or whatever it is.

When I was a little kid, back in the '70s, Mama was gone somewhere, and Daddy had to feed me lunch. Usually, my grandmother would handle that, but for some reason, it fell upon him.

He made me a 'mater sandwich. Now, he like sugar on his 'maters. Something he got from my paternal grandmother. So, his 'mater sandwich he made me had sugar piled up on the 'maters, with a whole bunch of mayonaisse and some other stuff. I took a bite of that, and turned up my nose.

That made him mad, and he force me to eat that sandwich.

That incident traumatized me agin' 'maters until I was about 30 years old. Sugar on 'maters, my God! It was god-awful.

I finally got where I would eat 'maters. Now, one time, back the early 2000s, I joked about that with one of our neighbors, in Daddy's presence.

He couldn't believe anybody would put sugar on 'maters. We laughed and laughed. Daddy got butt hurt and ass mad about that. On the way home, he said, "I was just doin' the best I knew how! And you're jest ungrafteful!"

He'd get sort of butt-hurt about stuff like that.

In fact Chinese authorities announced and then deleted that they will pursue their disastrous Zero COVID policies for the next five years.

What if the truth of the matter is that there is a worldwide boycott of Chinese goods because of the Wuhan virus? That China will shut down entire cities because there is no demand for the workers to produce 'stuff'. If Chinese goods don't flow out of the warehouses then there is no place to put the shit sitting offshore.

80 Ciampino, I wrote this yesterday, but I don't think you saw it:

The new one has each port on each side so I can't use those dual-USB headed cables for this as it won't stretch across. Bummer. Moron designers. Should have both ports on one side or have 3 ports.

Posted by: Ciampino at July 01, 2022 05:08 AM

Those dual-USB headed cables were only needed on very early computers because when they were designed, nobody had thought of using USB ports to power things so the power available through a single port was limited. Nowadays, people expect to power things through USB ports, so you don't need to double up on the power. Heck, the computers I used to work on had a limit of like 20 amps through each USB port. Just plug in the one with the data connection. It'll be fine.

81 Delurking for a moment, I'm currently moving from one phone to another and have discovered that the AoSHQ Reader has been pulled from the Play store. I assuming during the recent unpleasantness... at any rate is there anywhere I can go to sideload the apk? Or do I need to take a different tack from now on to get my favorite smart military blog fix? Many thanks in advance.
