Top Story

  • TSMC to customers: Get with the program and move to 28nm already. (AnandTech)

Compared to the new hotness (see below) 28nm is old school and almost old hat, but it works, and it works the same as older processes. It's the last robust process with planar transistors rather than FinFETs, so designs are relatively easy to move.

There is also a 20nm planar node, but it sucks. AMD never used it, for example, despite being stuck on 28nm for years.

  • Samsung meanwhile has started production at 3nm. (ZDNet)

The main advantage of Samsung's 3nm and their new GAAFET transistors is that they cut power consumption by nearly half. They also reportedly offer up to 20% better performance but the way that number is measured makes its utility dubious. You need the chart plotting frequencies against power consumption and the details of the sample circuit being evaluated.

About a year ago, I woke up with what I can best describe as sciatica. I literally limped for about 4 months. Came out of nowhere and left just as quick. But, boy, for those four or so months, it was excruciating. When it first happened, I had tears and 'walked' hunched over like some old Chinaman and was giving myself a couple of days then, if I didn't see some improvement, I was going to the ER; the pain was that bad. Felt some improvement, so no ER. But I hobbled and limped along for months, with it being better some days and worse others but never gone. All I could think was, 'This getting old crap sure as hell sucks.'

The old ones went up with the house in 2002 and they each probably weighed 40 pounds. I was stunned when the first one came off the hook. The new ones weighed maybe half that. My helper was eager to take the old fans assuming they must be loaded with copper windings.

58 Powerline has an interesting reference to Cassidy having a notebook she referred to constantly during her videotaped deposition. First, this is never done in depositions, period - lawyers hand you papers and ask you to react to them or you tell your story and they question it. Second, were this a real adversarial proceeding, that notebook would be discoverable, likely leading to all sorts of interesting things like the people who wrote it.

74 Another problem with the older nodes is that as some critical bits of equipment fail, there are no parts or full replacements to be had. Despite their age, the gear would be very expensive for anyone who knew how to put back into production. Which is a problem for products that don't have any good reason to be produced at newer nodes.

The changes in semiconductor economics has changed the way many businesses work. Die shrinks that were once the norm no longer make sense. This is why there will likely never be a $250 MSRP version of the PS5 or Xbox Series X. AMD has zero desire to port the underlying CPU and GPU architectures to newer nodes and shouldering the cost by themselves makes it far too costly to ever hope to realize a profit for the console makers, Sony and Microsoft. This is also why there isn't likely to be 'pro' models as there were in the previous generation. There isn't really a need and the pricing doesn't work in favor of them. Having a shorter generation and introducing new backward compatible models that take over the same price point is more likely. Customizing a design AMD is already preparing for for 5nm makes far more financial sense.

87 Latest consoles/ phone/PC etc use latest fabrication node, chips in things like cars and equipment is typically several 5-15 years behind. Ya a d Cheaper and proven stable, but also chips just cost alot to design, fan, and test. They aren't in a hurry.

The issue and probably why TSMC is saying this, they can grab exponentially more say 10 million transistor chips at 28nm than they can at 130nm. It's getting to where the resource cost of old big chips is offsetting savings of old nodes.

MPPPP, you have to remember that I grew up down there, so for me there is still a thin overlay of good childhood memories. The part of it downriver from Jackson Square is less touristy and a little more of a neighborhood (if you have the money of a John Goodman or an Angelina Jolie, that is). Plus the Quarter is of historical interest -- though a lot of the buildings are actually Spanish-style, so it really shouldn't be called the "French" Quarter at all.

They city has made it so tourist-oriented, though, and has made it so difficult and expensive to visit, that I travel down there less than once a year now.

188 The Quarter in the 60's was pretty cool - you could actually see jazz and catch folks like Fountain and Hirt and the burlesque shows - which I was too young for - were all Gypsy- like.. The last time I went in 2011 it was serial Jimmy Buffett wannabes, piano bars and rock music - and wall to wall strip joints. Like Dallas.

The Sixties and early Seventies was when I grew up down there. I walked past Pete Fountain's Bourbon St. club every day on the way to school. The area was still a neighborhood, though, with mom-and-pop groceries and service businesses like drugstores, locksmiths, and plumbers. There was an independent hardware store a block from my school. A Pontiac dealership stood on the edge of the Quarter, and I recall at least one Amoco gas station on the river edge of the district.

Plus we had the shopping district of Canal St. only 6 blocks away. Woolworth's (2 of 'em!) and Grants, actual multi-story department stores, army surplus places, newsstands and bookstores and jewelry stores -- instead of endless "urban" clothing and cheap electronics and sneaker shops, and hotels and more hotels.

And all these years I was told it was "for the health of the mother" or something.

What percentage of abortions are purely elective? If they're elective the "health of the mother" has nothing to do with it.

192 I might get willowed, but I'll try to tell a few stories. These are taken from the 1933 book Coolidge Wit and Wisdom: 125 Short Stories About "Cal."

Here's one:

"Mr Coolidge was retiring to the extreme. Neighbors who lived on the same street in Northampton for twenty years knew him only 'by sight.' One of them, exasperated, approached the great man and said: "I didn't vote for you."

"Somebody did,"
was the reply."

I doubt any mother's life has been in danger from childbirth in 50-100 years. If it has been, C-sections exist and are elected by millions all the time.

A few years ago the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute released pro-abortion data on the numbers. Abortions somewhat remotely and maybe possibly tied to rape/incest were 1.5% (so the real number is probably 0.10-0.25%).

99% of abortions are recreational.

208 Here's another:

"Constant attendance of the Secret Service men sometimes got on the nerves of Mr Coolidge. On his vacation in the Black Hills, he and a guide one day managed to get into a canoe and slip downstream for a little fishing without the Secret Service being aware the President had left. The guide skillfully negotiated a small rapid, and in a pool not far below the President quietly, silently, started casting.

"In about fifteen minutes both the guide and Coolidge heard a commotion upstream - shouts, splashings. Neither spoke. Then a canoe paddle drifted by. The President, intesnt on his fishing, gave no sign that he noticed it. Next a pillow floated past. Mr Coolidge continued his silent fishing. But a few seconds later a Secret Service man's hat followed the paddle and the pillow.

"As he made his next cast, the President spoke: "Been expecting that," he said."

222 Anyone looking to stock up on food still cheap.

A lot of Target Circle members are getting 20-25% off grocery coupons...and then, Vets are getting an additional 10% off an order.

Right now, Target has beans cheaper than Aldi's (as one example). You have to pick up the order to get the deals, but it might be worth a use...

PS - Don't buy cereal - their prices are ridiculous for that...
