Start with pork shoulder/boston butt. It's nearly impossible to screw up too badly provided that you follow the advice of the millions of articles and YT videos on the subject.
Follow with other meats and things, such as, but not limited to: Brisket, ribs (beef and pork), tri-tip, steak, rib roasts, jalapeno peppers and garlic (then throw those in a blender with some olive oil for a dynamite taco sauce), etc. etc.
If you don't have one already, invest in a good meat thermometer. I personally use the Thermapen by Thermoworks, but other less expensive options exist.

This. Start small. Spatchcock a whole chicken. Or do a chuck roast. Something in the 3 - 4 - 5 lb range. I just started smoking meats on an offset at the end of last summer and it's been a learning experience. It's different from grilling fast over direct heat.
Learn the difference between 'done' and 'ready'. It's a big difference, especially in the briskets and pork butts/shoulders.

I did aerobic dancing for a long time. Wear really good shoes, and replace them fairly often. Also, my feet ache if I am walking for a long time, like shopping all day. My doctor gave me a prescription for diclofenac sodium topical gel. I usually forget to rub it on my feet until after I get home and my feet already hurt, but it does help.

I love it. Fauci is now having a rebound of Covid after taking Pfizer's wonder drug Paxlovid. It has this little problem of suppressing symptoms for a while, then allowing a rebound. Especially in the highly vaccinated.

Dear God, no. Not that for your first cook. I tried a 10lb pork butt for my first, thinking it was going to be easy pulled pork bbq. It went on at noon, wrapped up at 6 hrs, pulled at 8 hrs, and rested an hour. It was 'done' but not 'ready' to shred. Not tender enough by far. The shoulder bone would not release. It would have needed another 5 - 6 hours to get from 'done' to 'ready'.
Keep a detailed logbook of your cook plans, cook notes as you go (actual happenings), and results.

Never got a taste for bourbon, but I love a good rye. You're right, though, there's not a lot of variation. So I take tours of all the other stuff you mention, except rum, and have some rye when I'm in the mood for rye. Also, the Sazerac cocktail, made with Sazerac rye, is so amazingly good that I have to come back to it often.

Butane here is commonly sold in cans as fuel for camp stoves or table-top hot plates. And it is the fuel for gas lighters. With it's higher boiling point, it doesn't take much of a "pressure vessel" to keep it confined as a liquid.

It's tricky though. You don't want it too hot to cook the fish. You want to almost cold (or cool) smoke it. Otherwise the albumin protein cooks and leave unsightly white globs.

For his birthday present last year I bought us a guided tour of the firearms museum in Cody. Worth every penny to see the joy on his face.

The bacanora brands we can get here is Rancho Tepua and Aguamiel.
We were introduced to rye via a gift bottle of Koval, a small Chicago distillery. We can't get that everywhere we go, so we go with Woodford Reserve, $30 at Walmart.
Scotch, either 12 year old Glenfiddich, or if flush, Talisker 10 year old.
The rye and scotch is done in a short whiskey glass, a single clear ice cube. I make the cubes four at a time using a special mold with insulated box wrap from Das Tool Kit, available from Amazon at about $18.
In some markets you can get clear cube cocktail ice at the stores but not where we spend half the year, so there's the mold.

I had never seen that movie start to finish until just a few years ago (just brief clips on cable TV while channel surfing when I was not quite 29). And yes. It is an outstanding film.

Clear as crystal.
Before refrigeration, ice came from frozen lakes, and of course was clear. Great big sawn blocks.
Get a cheap foam box cooler for a six pack, throw away the top, fill it to near the brim with water, stick in the freezer, and remember to take it out after only 10 to 12 hours.
You will emulate the ice on a frozen pond. Two inches or more of hard clear ice on top. Take it all out of the cooler, use a saw and mallet, make cubes.

There are "gourmet ice" machines that will make clear ice. They are spendy, several thousand bucks.
They use the icicle method. Freeze from the inside out. A slow trickle of running water is circulated over the molds, gradually freezing in layers. That's the way icicles form.

Rum is the most global spirit, probably, as it's produced around the world, anywhere sugar cane is/was grown. From Nicaragua to Reunion to Fiji. And part of the variety comes from a lack of order, or rules. The French/formerly French territories tend to have fairly strict rules, like AOCs in France for wine. Some countries have rules, some new ones are considering them, but meanwhile it's a truly diverse field.
Straight from cane juice (agricole, predominant style in French areas), or from molasses, pot or column still or both, finishing in all the different things other spirit makers are using these days (ex-bourbon, cognac, sherry, port, zinfandel casks). Barrel proof or 80 proof.
And plenty of great bottles for bourbon lovers wanting to tiptoe in.

Both by Foursquare Distillery in Barbados, run by a purist maniac and very good rum maker, Richard Seale. Purist as in no additives, ever. Bit of an evangelist on it, trying to get Barbados to require different labeling for additives. Additives (mostly sugar) are a bit of a battleground in the rum world. The oldest most prestigious spirits in the world, like cognac, permit some added sugar, but some in the rum world want only "pure" rums.

Read the link. The design was pre-War, but manufacture of the tractor didn't begin until 1949, and carried on into the 1960's. The glow plug indicator on the dash is the same as used on my 1962 International Diesel tractor, which was built in England.

After I make further progress with rum, was hoping to start with cachaca (aged stuff, not mixing), but availability is even more of a problem than with rum, which is a big problem. Europe is the biggest aged rum market, though I sense the American one is growing, fast.
And Colombia has aged rums, of course. Dictador is the brand easiest to find here. Known for their interesting flavor profile, usually including coffee notes. Have a bottle of the 12-yr in the pantry awaiting its turn.

The '71 & '72 Superbeetles shared the flat dashboard and windshield with all "conventional" Beetles, but sported MacPherson strut front suspension, and about a 6" stretch to the nose. Meant the spare was laid down flat in a "well", beneath the load-floor of the trunk.
Best two years and the best models of the Beetle, I think. The '73 and onward curved dash (foam injected POS), could not accommodate modifications, like the flat dash could. And the Sun ate those foam dashes like sunburn on a red-headed stepchild.

Pretty much agree. The MacPherson strut was not as strong as the torsion bar front end it replaced, but did give more trunk space. The '71 Super is a pretty good counterfeit Beetle, but the '73 is just plain odd.
VW should have left the Beetle as it was, and done the strut job on the Type III vehicles. Might have made them better sellers.

I was proud to have mowed down some edges and food plots, then meandered out to the grapes and discovered the few Jap Beetles had become a full invasion on the grapes. .. that was about 8:10pm .. filled the 4 gallon back pack sprayer and hopefully they will all be dead dy early tomorrow. (the Sevin I bought 20 years ago still works).

The Panhard has two cylinders, about 800 cc, and makes 50 HP from that. Hemi heads, torsion valve springs, and full roller bearing crank. Redlined at 7000 RPM, and it has a tach, too. Pretty zippy, for a car of that tiny displacement.

Yes. The Europeans, including the Brits, over the decades since cars came on the road, used to have different licensing costs depending on 'factors'. Tried factors have been: engine capacity - so a 1500cc engine is always 1496cc or similar even today; wheel diameter - big rims or big tires would incur higher fees; curb weight - which is what is mostly used today if there is a sliding scale; possibly others that I don't know about.

Their 412 series was an attempt at a "Modern" VW, and it looked like it'd work out well, on paper. You know where that effort went, of course.
The aftermarket sold all manner of curative, stronger and better geometry solutions to the SuperBeetle's Strut Suspension. Including disc brakes, Bosch dampers, shorter spring-stacks, anti-sway bars, tower braces, larger ball-joint/control arm assemblies, the works.
A SuperBeetle with upgraded "legs" on all four corners, a mild boost to engine tune, and radial tires on slightly wider wheels, and wow, what a difference!

Tabacchi or smoke shops sold all tobacco products but also stamps, both the mailing ones and the various revenue stamps that one had/have? to have to make a document legit. What a racket. I believe Greece, France and Spain do that. Not sure about others. I can't remember the salt part. However you can go to shops that sell plain alcohol and the flavorings you need to make almost any liqueur you want (with instructions). Cheap. In contrast try buying alcohol in any county that's ever been ruled by the Brits - yes us too.

The entire engine comes out pretty easily, but the silly Frenchmen attached the motor mounts to the exhaust header pipes, and then used rubber biscuits loaded in shear to support the engine. Needless to say, when the car came to me, the rubber biscuits were peeled off their metal backing, and the exhaust pipes rested on a part of the frame. I made up some custom brackets, and used a pair of Studebaker biscuit mounts, but loaded in compression instead of shear. Seems to work OK.

It's a 2:1 mixture of cane sugar and water heated on the stove (not boiled!) until the sugar has dissolved, and when it has cooled, I had one (1) part of lime juice...
It's a perfect addition to crushed ice, water, and vodka served in a Mason jar!

You are right that sugarcane grows at the Equator, in the tropics, and a bit further south - coastal Natal is a vast area of sugarcane. It needs abundant rainfall during the growing season and then relative dryness for the harvest to prevent rot. So not a semi-arid grower. The Western Cape, at the same latitude, has a Mediterranean climate, cooler and not enough rainfall.

"C" Rations for the win. It's what I fed on as a young USAF puke, training, in the field. Which was often.
"K" rations were inferior, and I was well out of the Service before the MRE era. But, I could live on "C" rats for as long as it took for things to even out. I can even cook the Ham & Beans or Limas into something edible, with a few trades.

Funny, when I'm in the mood for that, I make my own. Small cubed chuck steak, boiled in water with some Better Than Bouillon Beef. Once tender (a couple of hours), I mash the shit out of the cubes with a wooden spatula, breaking them down/apart. Add some seasoning. Cook down the liquid until I have a meat paste/spread. Makes a decent sized batch which freezes well, too. No sugar and less salt than the can.

Now, Vienna sausages. Armour. I like a can of those pretty good as well. The last few years, the taste of those seemed off to me. Wondered if it was my taster, or Covid pandemic shutodwn shit. They have improved of late.
I made the mistake of trying some off-brand Viennas, Libby's I think it was. God-awful. Also, tried some of the chicken. Turrible.
Locally, we refer to cans of Armour Vienna after a local fellow, named Jim. I won't mention his full name, I'll just say "Jim Does". He used to stop off at a local country store joint to eat lunch, and would grab a can of Armour Vienna sausages and some crackers. Thus, we'd refer to them as a can of "Jim Does".

Ol' Jim Doe came to a bad end. His son was a local HVAC guy, still does it (as best as he can). Ol' Jim managed to get run over by his tractor way back, probably early 2000s.
Poor guy *crawled*, all broken up, back to his house. He made it nearly to the doorsteps of the back porch. That's where they found him. The tractor had run off in the woods, hit a tree, and choked down.
Ol' Jim's wife died just a few weeks ago, Miley and me went to the funeral, representin' the family. She was either 93 or 95, one year older or younger than my father, can't remember.

Biltong. We love that stuff. Impala and Kudu meat is particularly good but that made with beef is very good too. I specially like the peppery kind. Sure beats jerky.

Me and Jim's son, the HVAC guy just sort of ignored it. I let Jim know quickly that I wasn't in on the feudin', and his son let my father know as well. We didn't say anything, mind you, just spoke and joked, so's each would know we ain't participatin' in this here feud with our daddies.
They were still feudin' when Jim bought the farm.

Another drive today, took Jules to DeKalb to the eye
clinic. Seemed like a very short drive compare to what I just did, up and back to Stevens Point to see Dad.
Was up for his 86th birthday. We had a good time. The next day we stopped at two of the bars he frequents, he's a popular guy. He really is an extrovert and needs human interaction.
Started stopping at local places more after the covid shutdown, which came a few yrs after Mom died, they were together since they were 15, he still misses he terribly.
