Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

You know, it occurs to me that in addition to being another June edition, it's also the last June edition of 2022. Kind of sad, really. Adios, June of 2022! Next week we'll welcome July of 2022. Now that we understand how the calendar works, wassup with all y'all? I had really, really, rilly planned to go to the farm this week but some work stuff and some home stuff got in the way of my plans. I used to go down there with five or six things on my to-do (ha!) list, and come home disappointed in having only completed one or maybe two. It was the super-smart WeaselWoman who pointed out the farm was supposed to be fun and to stop worrying about it. Smart girl, and one with impeccable taste I might add.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Feature Gun
This week we have a little feller from the WeaselCollection, the Walther P22, which I purchased new in 2010.

This is, hands down, an excellent little gun. It functions reliably with all brands and types of ammo, and only rarely suffering a FTF/FTE, and since it's not a self-defense gun, those don't really bother me when they do occur. Whenever I am helping a new shooter, it is almost always the gun I start them out with. If I have said it once I have said it a hunnert times, do not overlook the .22LR as a training cartridge. You can still very economically spend an afternoon shooting it while focusing on all the basics of marksmanship; grip mechanics, sight alignment, target acquisition, and looking good for the range babes.

Determining Elevation and Windage
Tonight, I want to cover something which we've discussed before and which continues to present a little bit of a mystery to many, and that's how to engage a target for the first time with an initially unverified ammo load. Say a hawt babe, the heiress to her family beer and ammo manufacturing empire who is temporarily home from her assignment as a super-model, invites you to her private range for a day of rifle shooting and you want to impress her with your super-ninja precision shooting abilities. Rather than bothering with the difficult task of practicing and recording range data, you have decided to instead spend your free time reading the internet on how the bad-ass Navy SEAL's jump out of helicopters, and by golly you're ready to go!

Except for the shooting part. Might be a teeeeensy problemo there.

You have a bolt rifle in .308 Winchester, a decent scope, bipod and a sturdy rear bag, and you even lucked in to some commercial Federal Gold Medal Match ammo that your pal 'ol Weasel recommended. Now what?

*SIGH*

You have disappointed Weasel. We've covered this material before, but let's go over it again.

Step 1: Sighting the rifle
You should've already done this, however, based on your extensive internet reading the night before the process seems something of a mystery and besides you've been OK plinking at 50 yards up until now. Not great, mind you, but OK enough to hit a fair size target most of the time.

Sighting or "zeroing" a rifle is not voodoo. It simply means the crosshairs inside the scope are pointed to exactly the same place as the rifle barrel and bullet impact at a fixed distance, and there is an easy way to achieve this mystical state of affairs. It's helpful to use a paper "sighting" target with a grid of one-inch squares, but that really isn't absolutely necessary. Set up the target at 100 yards and with as steady a hold as possible using shooting bags, and with all the little scope knobs set at zero, fire a shot at the center of the target. If you're lucky, the impact will be somewhere on the paper, but if not, you have some more work to do. With a bolt gun it's possible to remove the bolt and sight through the barrel so the scope and barrel alignment are pointed in roughly the same place so the bullet is on the paper, and there are other options, such as laser cartridge inserts, which basically do the same thing. Now the process can continue.

Say you're lucky and the bullet has found the paper, with the impact low about 2.5" and left about 3.0" of the target center and your aim point. All you need to do now is adjust the scope reticle to match the bullet's point of impact. You remember that your scope is indexed in Minutes of Angle, or MOA, and that one MOA equals just over 1" (1.047") at 100 yards. After thinking for a minute, you conclude an adjustment right 3.0 inches and up 2.5 inches is necessary. All that is needed is to turn the elevation UP and RIGHT by these amounts. Take one or two practice shots to confirm the setting, then loosen the scope knob set screws and reposition them to zero.

Now your lovely host wants to make things interesting and move out to a target at 300 yards. Uh oh! What do you do now? Up until now, all of your shooting has been at 50 yards, and you've already stretched that to 100 yards zeroing the rifle. What more does she want? These demands are unreasonable! Has she not seen your cool tactical pants and Wiley X shooting glasses?

*SIGH*

You have again disappointed Weasel. We've also covered this material before, but let's go over it again too.

Step 2: Adjusting for Elevation and Wind
You really weren't paying attention, but recall Weasel saying something about a shooting app he uses. Now what was the name of it... Ballistic something or other... Ballistic AE! That's it!! Although there are others, that's the one your 'ol pal Weasel uses and recommends, so quick like a bunny you download it from the app store.

It might not seem so first, but the Ballistic AE app isn't very difficult to use. It really pays to familiarize yourself with it before you need it and get used to the features and conventions. In a nutshell, you need to know what bullet you are using, its speed leaving the barrel of your gun and a few specifics about the rifle itself; zero distance, scope height, barrel length, and a couple of others.

Ballistic AE comes with a bullet library containing very specific information about various bullets. Looking at the package your ammo came in, you see the Federal Gold Medal Match is using a Sierra Match King HPBT (Hollow Point Boat Tail) bullet weighing 168 grains. Recall a grain is simply a unit of weight measure equaling 1/7000th of a pound. You find the Sierra section of the bullet library and select it or enter the info manually. You don't have a chronograph to precisely measure velocity but note on the package that the manufacturer lists a muzzle velocity of 2650 fps and using the bullet library pre-selects this for you. You have no idea what length barrel was on the test gun, and it will make some difference, but it's better than nothing so you use that figure. Finally, in the app you configure a 1 mph wind exactly perpendicular to the bullet's flight, or a 1 mph full value wind, and calculate the trajectory. What you get is this:

Ballistic AE is an extremely powerful ballistic computer, and a complete discussion of its features is beyond the scope of this thread. Suffice it to say there is a lot this thing will do and if you are at all serious about shooting at longer distances then you should get a copy of it. It allows for countless atmospheric, rifle and ammunition variables, and the more inputs it has, the greater the degree of accuracy the output will be. In this example, I have left all of the atmospheric data set to "standard" and entered the minimum data for a firing solution out to 500 yards in 100-yard increments.

You look at the range conditions and guess the wind is blowing about 5 mph from the left, and you know the next target is at 300 yards. You have the basic information you need to take a shot in these conditions. Find the 300 yd line in the bullet trajectory data and note the bullet drop in col 2 is 4.27 MOA, and the effect of a full value wind (perpendicular the line of flight) at 1 mph in col 4 is .05 MOA. You dial up, 4.25 MOA, and dial left wind of .25 MOA (.05 MOA x 5 mph), and take the shot.

Bingo! Hit! Hawt Babe is impressed!

With some basic information about the rifle and ammunition you have been able to convert what you know into a firing solution. In those same conditions, a shot at 500 yards would be about 10.0 MOA elevation (and hold a little low), and .5 MOA left wind.

The super hawt range babe swoons and asks you to marry her and you live happily ever after.

The End.

Well, not really The End. Please, for the sake of all that is holy, please record the range data in a little notebook you keep with the rifle. It can be as simple as "300 yds 4.25 / .05" or can be more complex to include location, weather data, your deepest thoughts and feelings... whatever you like. At a minimum though, you need the 4.25 MOA elevation and .05 MOA for 1 mph wind info. For general plinking and funsies, just print a copy of the range card and laminate it. You will find there are going to be differences with the computed data and your actual observations based on differences in atmospheric conditions, muzzle velocities and other variables, but it should get you close enough for Moron-level work. Next steps would to be to measure actual velocities with a chronograph and atmospheric conditions such as density altitude with a Kestrel Weather Meter or similar product.

Again, the better the input the more accurate the output. As you engage more distant targets, the margin for error becomes vanishingly small, and you need to be more precise in your measurements and setup behind the gun. Hope this helps, and as always, if you have questions just drop me a note!

Sock Monkey is Down!
Next up, our pal Sock Monkey has banged up his trigger finger and it's affecting his shooting. Oh the humanity!

Looking for suggestions from the pros.
I am not sure if you can tell from this picture. The finger in the lower left is my trigger finger. If you can notice it is slightly wider and has a slight downward bend. This is the result of smashing two of my fingers with my log splitter last November. Initially there was some loss of tactile sensitivity. That seems to have improved. Warmer temps or nerve damage repairing itself. It has noticeably affected my shot groupings to the point of frustration. My primary is a Glock 19 but the grouping issue is noticeable to some degree on everything I shoot. The frustration is the inconsistency. I don't seem to have an identifiable pattern. High low left right and combinations that vary all over the place. Any thoughts? Drills? My wife has already stated the obvious regarding being more careful with the log splitter so we can skip that one.

Yikes, bro! I am at a total loss on this one. I know we have some smart doctor types who read the thread, hopefully one of them will chime in! Has anyone out there had a similar injury, and what did you do for it?

Colt 1911 vs the Nambu Type 14

Here's a great look at the Colt 1911 vs the Nambu Type 14 from our pal A.H. Lloyd. Who says the war is over?!

One of the great lessons is life is this: if you don't have a pickup truck of your own, find friends who do.
Similarly, you don't really need to have a vast gun collection so long as you have friends who do.
Today I will prove this point by comparing two completely dissimilar pistols: the Colt 1911 (actually an Argentinian Ballester-Molina, but close enough) and a Nambu Type 14.
Strange though it may seem, these two weapons are close contemporaries. The Nambu was made in January of 1943 and the Ballester-Molina 1911 dates from the late 1940s.
Looking at them side by side, it is clear that the 1911 is a military arm. It is rugged, durable, easy to disassemble and maintain. Even the shape of it exudes a sense of power. The design was so robust that it became a world-wide standard that is still being used today.
The Nambu is an artisan weapon. The Japanese serialized everything. Even the tiniest parts have three digits stamped on them - including the mag release and firing pin! This is not something you do if you expect to swap out parts regularly. Everything about it is over-engineered and the milling required to shape it is ludicrous. As for disassembly, it's also needlessly complex. There are videos on YouTube if you want to see it, but suffice to say that there really isn't a "field strip" option - whether you want it or not, you're getting full disassembly.

And yes, I'll say it: a Mauser C96 is less complex to take apart than this metal Japanese jigsaw puzzle. For one thing, on the C96 you can swap out the firing pin with a screwdriver and leave the rest of the weapon intact. Can't do that on a Nambu, which is a serious flaw we'll discuss later.
That gets us to another key difference: use in action. For the size of the weapon, the Nambu gives you very little in return. From left to right we have .45 ACP, 8x22mm Nambu and 7..63mm Mauser/7.62mm Tokarev (the cartridges are externally identical, but the Tokarev rounds have more powder). As you can see, the 8x22mm cartridge looks like a 7x63mm Mauser but has only half of the horsepower.

Do the books have pictures?

Astute observers will note that I chose to use snap caps and dummy rounds to highlight how important and useful it is to have these, particularly with vintage weapons.
I don't think I need to sing the praises of the 1911 in .45 ACP, so I'll just note that if it comes down to a gunfight, everyone with a brain would choose it over the Nambu. Yes, the Nambu magazine has an additional cartridge, but .45 ACP has (depending on the loading) 50-100% more energy. I'm generally supportive of mouse guns but defending yourself from a mugger is a bit different that full-on combat ops.
Since we've got them open, there are a couple of interesting observations about these particular weapons. The finish on the Nambu is less than ideal, but that's to be expected. Internally, however, it is in great shape with a nice clean bore and shiny parts throughout. The firing pin is a replacement, which is to be expected because among the design's many flaws was a fragile firing pin. This was a known issue and issue holsters have a slot for a spare.
Let's pause to contemplate that for a moment. You're blasting away with your pistol and there's a click but no boom. Because the Nambu uses a striker, the only way to cycle it is to pull the cocking piece. So you do that, ejecting a round in the process. You try again and get nothing. At this point, you realize the pin may have broken, but the only way to check is examine the rounds you just ejected to see if there was strike on the primer. This is not a function you want to perform at pistol range. Maybe that's why they also issued their officers swords.
One reason this particular specimen is in such good shape is that its previous owner packed it with preservative. The current owner remarked that he got a deal on it because the bore looked pretty bad on initial inspection. Once he brought it home to clean it, he realized that it was just filled with old cosmoline. Turns out, the bore is nice and shiny. Lucky bastard.
I think there is another reason this Nambu - and others like it - seem to be in better average condition than bring-back weapons from Europe. I believe it has to do with the nature of the combat. Veterans from the European Theater of Operations had a very different experience than those who fought in the Pacific War. Unlike the European veterans, those in the Pacific didn't get to experience light-hearted jaunts in London, Rome or Paris. Instead, it was one jungle hell after another. The only respite might be a visit to the overworked whores at Pearl Harbor or maybe Manila late in the war.
All of which is to say, they took souvenirs but when they got home, there may have been a reluctance to get them out and relive the experience. Yes, ammo was more of an issue than with European weapons, but I get the sense from the accounts (and residual feelings of veterans towards the Japanese), that their trophies were more likely to be packed away than taken out and talked about. I could be wrong, but that's my sense of it.
The 1911 has clearly been refinished, and while barrel and frame match, the barrel is in hideous condition. If you throw enough light into it, you can see where the rifling used to be. It winds like little curving paths through all the pitting. Clearly, I'm going to need a replacement.
Yes, here's the big reveal at the end: I've joined the 1911 club. That worn-out not-quite-1911 was all I can afford, which is why - as I said at the start - it's important to have friends with much more lavish gun collections that you.
As to why I got a 1911, that's a story for another time...

.380 ACP Worth a Look?
I think the .380 ACP gets something of a bad rap. Sure, carry the .50AE if you can, but if size, weight and concealment are factors, consider whether the .380 has a place in your canoe. They can be a little snappy which surprises some people, but you don't find a lot of people volunteering to act as a target for one, either. Here's a video on the cartridge using ballistic gel.

Avo Syncro Nicaragua, toro. Avo Uvezian is a musician who turned to composing cigar blends. This is his first significant use of Nicaraguan tobacco, including the spicy leaves grown in the volcanic soils of Isla Ometepe. Avo has a signature flavor profile to most of his stuff, what I'd call a mellow, full flavor, often with a hint of sweetness. This cigar follows that path, using not just Nicaraguan but also leaf from the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Ecuador. Box-pressed - meaning roughly rectangular instead of round, so a "v-cut" works well on this one. About $8 and up online.

3 I bought a Glock 42 about 6 weeks ago and haven't even shot it yet. Real life intervened. Hopefully when everything settles down I'll be able to shoot it and a couple of other guns I plan to buy that I had no intention to until they passed the red flag law.

Wild Bill Hickock retired people with roughly the same force.

I am in a bit of a conundrum, I traded off wife's SASS gear save one pistol in .45LC and got rid of her awesome but finicky Taurus Thunderbolt (fine weapon of great accuracy but it refused to feed some 45 ammo).

Now I am deciding between a Spencer Carbine, a lever gun, or a Circuit Judge.

Advice or experience welcome.

11 on the .380 ACP front, there is an open topped 1862 made by Uberti chambered in 5 shots of .380 goodness mimicking the Richards conversion.

The 5" barrel is onerous but can be remedied by a gunsmith if inclined.

16 For the shooter with the banged up finger. I'd suggest checking your grip. Are you over gripping? Your grip on trigger hand should be firm like a hand shake when first meeting another man. Your support hand can grip as tight as you want. Over pressure on the middle and ring finger of your trigger side should be avoided as it effects the "pull" angle of the trigger finger.

Funny you should ask! Just got back. Sunday's bi-weekly DMV MGC went to the range. Where they are currently had an ammo-palooza. Shot about 180 rounds, bought about 300. On net, that's more!

I am looking for a shooting mat for prone firing, and I recall that the great and powerful Weasel had a nifty one. I cannot recall the manufacturer and model, or where said Weasel came by same.

I still have my 1851 conversions in .38SP so I may eventually want a rifle in .357/38.

The model 1910 actually has a lot going for it, even in a modern context. It somewhat pre-figures today's preference for 'auto-release' safeties rather than ones that have to be deliberately operated.

You've got a slick, no-snag weapon that is single-action only and hammer fired, but the hammer is hidden and it's only safety is in the grip.

It's an amazing pocket pistol.

Pretty sure the ruling means that every State/DC has to become a shall issue State but they will fight it tooth and nail and it will be tied up in the court system for another 20 years or more.

SCOTUS ruled that you do not need a reason to carry a handgun outside of your house and you can't be denied a permit because of it. NY, NJ, MA, CA, IL and RI hardest hit.

50 Howdy Weasel! Had a good trip to the range today, after a few more weeks of the penny drill, practicing with snap caps, and the breathing techniques you shared with me. My groupings were 6-8" at 10 yds, and 4" or less at 7 & 5 yds using my 9mm MR920. Not perfect, but definitely going the right direction!

Also, I finally decided to get my pistol a playmate. I bought an IWI Jericho in 45 ACP yesterday. Very excited for it to ship to my local FFL in the next week or two, and highly anxious to begin work with the Lord's caliber....

51 I like the Walther P22. The one I have came with a threaded barrel for a suppressor, and the combination is a lot of fun...a giant air gun with subsonic ammo, but even hotter ammo works fine. If you haven't tried CCI polymer coated ammo, it is very clean.

My Walter slide broke...a not uncommon problem with older Walthers. If you live in the USA, lifetime warranty so you can send in the old slide and get a new one.

52 21 The 1910 Browning used by Princip and the other 3 in the hands of the conspirators were MIA for some years. I had them on my white whale list for gun show finds, the serial numbers being available. They had been in a museum in Salzburg, and vanished during occupation post WW2. People just figured spoils of war. Ended up a local monastery had all four pistols, the brothers locking them up for safekeeping and they were eventually forgotten.

I'm a big fan of the .22lr. My favorite pistol is the CZ Kadet adapter for the P07. This lets me use the frame of my existing MVP Carry pistol but use .22 ammo. Helps with all kinds of drills, but of course .22 does not have the muzzle blast and recoil of 9mm. Second favorite, mostly for form factor, is my G44, now that the magazine issues have worked themselves out, it's good with everything but cheap Thunderbolt ammo. It hates Thunderbolts.

He said they have to "reassess" California statues on CC permits after the SCOTUS ruling. I have not read anything where he said they would not abide by the SCOTUS ruling. I did read that he is drafting legislation to expand places where concealed carry would be prohibited though.

60 I was able to put over 100 rounds through the new G48 (with Hrothgar's help)and the slide loosened up nicely. My shooting was kind of mediocre but I know what I was doing wrong and when I focused on it, I hit the target.

61 As for range time, yes, I did get some range time in today. Best weather for several days, so I took an unlikely pair out to a Secure Undisclosed Location.

First up, HK P2000 in .40. Why in .40, you ask? Because a few years back, .40 dramatically fell from favor and it was the cheapest way for me to get an HK, which I really, really wanted.

So, you know, polymer and stuff and it's fun. Recoil is crisp, but I don't mind. But that was just the appetizer.

The main course was an Astra 300 in .380! Wonderful little thing, somewhat similar to the Model 1910, honestly. It's totally tubular (literally) and that makes the front sights surprisingly visible.

This is yet another vintage pistol that shoots best with only one hand and points naturally. Much fun.

Alas, both weapons are now on a lake bottom after my jet-ski flipped on the way home.

Sig now makes a P365 in .380. 12 rounds of .380 goodness in a very compact gun if you have problems with 9mm recoil. I have one and it is a peach. I have carried it a time or two.

You still have to have a California carry permit for outside the home and comply with other onerous regulations as to where and when you can carry. But, if you apply for a carry permit, the police are no longer able to ask you why you want to carry and judge whether you get a permit based on their own discretion. They have to issue you a permit if you fulfill all the other requirements.

This is not a constitutional carry decision but merely that states do not have the discretion whether or not to issue you a permit (kind of like drivers licenses now) if you fulfill all mandatory requirements.

That's not quite fair. The Model 1910 was designed for and patented by FN in Belgium. Colt had the Model 1908, which the Model 1910 is derived from. Because of the way FN and Colt split up the world when it came to selling JMB designed pistols, the Model 1910 was not offered for sale in the US.

76 59 All the Judge type (or the SW Governor) revolvers are designed for close in using something specialized 410 ammo or 45 Long Colt. Like most compromises, it is a kludge and will not be the most accurate in order to fire two different types of ammo.

It is not a weapon to use for accuracy much beyond 5-10 yards.

77 Now...on to my yammering. Feel free to skip range report:

I had extra time off, so went to the range twice. This doubles my round count on the Taurus G3C TORO and the PSA Dagger.

The Dagger is a winner. I'm taking it to IDPA and seeing how it performs. With the cheap Vortex (I prefer Holosun) on it, it does a good job of getting on and staying on target. For some reason, I seem to shoot it a little better than Bubba Fly, my G17. That might be because the Romeo One optic is not as good as the Holosun or Vortex. But I digress. No malfunctions, accuracy good, iron sights co-witness with the dot.

The G3C TORO groups very well, very tight groups indeed with irons. (No optic...yet) It is a bit snappy and the grip and trigger remain rough. It's not going to be a pleasure shooter, but like the M&P Compact 1.0...it's functional and small without being tiny. I have noticed some feed hiccups. We'll keep an eye on that, only really had failures with the TulaMAXX 125gr ammo, and even those resolved with a smack to the gun, but any hesitation feeding is a red flag.

I'm doing dot torture drills. Man, those are hard. 50 targets, 22 bucks at Amazon.

Sock Monkey, first of all, ouch. I did a very similar dumb thing to my trigger finger with a sledgehammer while driving fenceposts. A grip strength trainer and time have made the situation better, plus the fact that I couldn't shoot for shit pre-injury (so I have no prior baseline against which to make a comparison).

By the way, the story goes, no idea if it's true, but, when the Army was looking at replacing their sidearm back around, oh, 1911, heh, Savage Arms also put forth a competitor.

After trial runs, the next phase was taking both pistols completely apart. The narrative goes, JMB (PBUH), had the 1911 apart before the Savage tech had really started to warm up. The 1911, as originally designed, with the slotted screws in the grips, was set up that way, because the slotted screws could be removed with a spent 45 acp cartridge.

Again, no idea as to how accurate the story is, but, hey, much like a fishing tale, it's hard to beat a decent firearm story.

87 I bought a CZ Scorpion Evo pistol in 9mm. It has more in common with a carbine than most pistols.

Pistols are the only thing I can think of where your two hands are on top of each other for lack of surface to grab. No weapon, no tool, no musical instrument does this. So I'm trying it. Someone here mentioned a chassis that turns a Sig P320 from a pistol to a "PDW", and that looked cool. This is like that, but cheaper and fewer steps.

My posture aiming is left foot in front of right. This is more true the heavier it is, and I am all the way there with this one. I have not fired it yet, still have the case and mags coming in.

I don’t carry, except when RO’ing at the range, but the 83 is the one I use for that aside from the Magnum Carry.

You might be able to shop around. Half Cocked Gun Repair up by Snohomish was quoting around $50 for that sort of work. That was pre-pandemic, though.

Thx Andycanuck, I may or may not have downloaded these Ross rifle manuals but thanks to your link, I did so again. I've seen a person or two pop up doing restoration Ross rifle stocks over the years but it has always been when I have the budget, they have quit or disappeared. When I don't--they pop up again. You'll be the first to get it if I sell it. I want to make sure that I have a safe fireable rifle first and may require some headspace adjustment to the spare long original barrel.

Apex Gun Parts and Century International in the US have Lithgow SMLE parts but not sure if they ship over the border.

100 First CZ-83 was a Euro police surplus from AIM Surplus. New one was one of last remaining examples of a limited run CZ did for an American distributor, those were the last made of that model. New one is only gun I cleaned up, function checked, and put away without shooting it.

108 85 There were a lot of pistols in competition with Browning designs in the early 20th century. Remington, Savage, H&R, Smith and Wesson's little .35 or .32 acp with the weirdest safety ever. All of these had features not brought by great moments in engineering but getting around JMB patents. Browning had the best patent attorneys in the universe. The big Savage trotted out for the Army competition was over complicated for that reason.

Those ones do not. However, Long Live Death: The Keys to Victory in the Spanish Civil War does have illustrations.

My highly-talented middle daughter created tank and aircraft silhouettes for some of the hardware that saw service in Spain. There's a brief equipment guide in the back so people can get an idea of what a Polycarpov I-15 or Heinkel HE-112 (not 111! it's a fighter) looked like.

Governor. That one does .45LC, .410, and .45ACP (with moon clips). She will take it camping but most of the time it lives on her nightstand. Had a green laser put on it for her.

131 Back on guns, I bought the Walther P-22 for the wife, back when I imagined she'd share this hobby with me. It's ok, a little small for my hand. I have not found it to be perfectly reliable but it's 'good enough' for range work.

I still mostly stick with the Kadet, the G44 or on occasion the SIG P250-22. I don't love the trigger on the latter but...yeah, it works. Well.

Oh and I have a Ruger MKIV but for some reason...I've just never fallen in love with it. The MK IV is a lot easier to assemble and clean, though. That's killer.

There was no divorce. Browning had so much raw talent, a single manufacturer was not enough. He bounced back and forth between them, spitting out designs as fast as they could build them.

Small-caliber automatics continued to be popular in Europe after WW II and are to this day. The US public soured on them, preferring the 1911 or a revolver.

You can argue Colt should have thought about updating the 1903 in the 70s and 80s, but they were doing the "snake guns" and not really into autoloaders that weren't 1911s.

If the new Colt wants to make waves, it should do a 1903 with more modern materials.

I have two MVPs - a Patrol and a Scout. They are carbine length so not really for reaching all the way out. I was looking for longer barrel MVPs but seems the whole line is pretty much made of unobtanium right not. Mossberg production line probably full to capacity making those little 590s and their new pistol.

SCOTUS should have added that we don't need a permit. You still need, MAYBE, to be cleared to own a firearm (in case felon, mental patient) but not actually have to pay for a permit. If it's my right why does a cop have to give me a permit?

Something to try: see if you can use your middle finger. I know some folks who do that with some 'point shooting' drills they do. Accuracy doesn't seem to suffer.

Basically, re-set it. Not a bad idea.

Regarding triggers, I'd steer away from Glocks for the moment.

I KNOW, I KNOW, yes, I don't like Glocks, but a smoother trigger face may help given your condition.

Also, a lighter trigger - hammer-fired, single action - would put less pressure on it.

Probably because JMB patents had expired by then. The Model 1910 stayed in production to arm police forces (mostly European) after WWII until the mid-1970s. A good production run in my book.

156 Ah! The Nambu Type 14.

Horrible pistol. The magazines still out there will tend to porposie rounds resulting in jams and double feeds. The round is anemic and hard to find and when you do it will cost ya. The pistol itself is accurate enough for combat but I would rather have a Type 94 or a Type 26, both of which I have and have shot and are also horrible. I never sell a weapon but I did sell my Type 14 to some poor bastard who collected Jap pistols. The Type 26 as it is is an example of what a revolver should not be. The Type 94 is just what it is being late war and what the hell, here's another pistol, hope it helps.

Japanese pistols of WW2 are the reason most of their officers preferred their swords.

160 Weasel, I got the little chronograph and I have to say it brings a lot of geek fun back to shooting. I can go out with an assortment of ammo, a spiral notebook, and my trusty online no math needed muzzle energy calculator and see just what the hell is going on. 172 I picked up a Walther P22 a couple years ago because I thought it would be cheap shooting and easy for Mrs.D to get the basics. Well. She sure learned bow to clear a jam.
I've run about a hundred rounds through it. CCI 22 LR seems to be the only reliable round and even this gives me a jam every third magazine.
Not sure if it's feeding right or if it isn't blowing the slide back far enough. It is annoying and I am disappointed.
Thoughts?

I'm not sure I want to buy all of the tools. At a minimum I'd need an armorer's wrench, something to hold the upper receiver, and a go no go gauge. That also means I don't know if things are torqued to spec. If I want that done properly, I need a torque wrench.

I didn't hear that, but I know that the General Officers' pistol is a smaller 1911 in .380. I saw one (with papers) up on Gun Broker a while ago and while I get the coolness of the provenance, it belonged to a very obscure one-star but it was priced like Ike carried it.

It's a design issue with the hammer catching on the slide. The Ruger SR22 essentially the same gun also has that issue. I used my drimmel tool a polishing pad and some polishing paste and very carefully removed enough of the hammer that I no longer have issues with jamming and Ftf. I was very careful and did it in increments. There may be other reasons and /or fixes but it successfully solved my issue

209 Back to the Nambu. First, some folks have a bad habit of calling a Type 94 a Nambu, and it's everything but. It was originally designed as a cheap export gun for South American consumption, and when the war started, the tooling was there. Nambus are a pretty crummy, over complicated design, but they do display some excellent workmanship. The crown jewell of the family is the little Baby Nambu, 7MM IIRC. I've seen a couple of these and they must have been hand built by true artists. Never issued, purchased by officers of high rank (mostly social economic rank). Bill Ruger got his start as a result of seeing one.

Back before my hiatus, I was having a problem with mine that was driving me nuts. I'd fire about 40 rds, then the gun would just quit working. Trigger would collapse, then nothing. I thought it was dirty ammo. It was making me crazy because I really enjoyed the weapon. Come to find out Ruger issued a recall on the SR22 for just my issue. Sent it back, they replaced the sear break pin and I haven't had a problem with it since. Check their website for the serial number and if yours in the range, they'll pay for shipping and repair.

Great. Century International has some but you have to go through menus to their Parts and accessories which is under their surplus corner menu. You can then narrow the search to No. 1 mk 3 as well as specify English or Australian. Some of CIA's parts are new. Apex's follow their description online.

I think that's why one would collect them. As works of art, not necessarily range guns.

BTW, don't be too hard on the Japanese. They were still more forward-thinking than the British, who used revolvers as a side arm into the 1950s. What a total fail.

Colt didn't. Someone makes a licensed repro of the 1903 as the patents have long expired. US Armaments Co (usarmamentscorp dot com) for 1300 or so in 32 acp in parkerized finish.

Read a review of it and reviewer mentioned that it seemed to work fine with fmj from what I recall.

The torque specs for the barrel nut is 35-85 ft. pounds, pretty easy to hit. You can get a wrench for the buffer tube nut for $10.

IIRC, the Army selected the Model 1908 (.380 ACP) for General Officer sidearms, procuring around 2,000 for this purpose. As other Model 1903/1908 pistols from other users (OSS, Naval Intelligence, SOE, CID, etc.) got turned in and the number of General Officer sidearms ran low, the Army also turned these survivors into General Officer sidearms during the 1950s and 1960s. This is generally true. There are some shops near me that get consignments from estates being liquidated from time to time. I've gotten some great deals that way.

I think US surplus in particular is valued, but you can still find good values from foreign stuff, the more obscure, the better.

If you reload, a decent choice. If you buy ammo, 38 Super is pricey and bullet choice/loads don't exist. Unless you compete in IPSC open class, the 38 Super is largely defunct which hurts ammo availability. Components for reloaders are around because those in open class reload to stoke their compensators.

Rock Island Armory did make one for about the same price as their other 1911's but have not seen it in stock recently.

288 Went to the range a couple of weeks ago with an old friend. Love the guy, but he's a really lousy shot. I think his problem is that he's left eye dominant but right hand dominant. Any how, we were both shooting 9mm and his shots were consistently low, but I was shooting the same ammo out of the same boxes and was in the bull at 15 yds. He was blaming it on the ammo being too heavy and it was dropping 6 to 8 inches at that range. I just smiled and kept on shooting.

To expand a bit. The court already found that the 2A covered the right to own firearms, and also to have them in the home for self-defense. The current ruling found that it also covers carrying them outside of the home.

Historically, many states had bans on various forms of carry, usually concealed carry because in the old days, it was thought cowardly to hide your weapon. Thus is many states, open carry was legal but concealed required a special permit.

Over the years, concealed carry has become more popular, and some state have actually reversed themselves so that open carry is illegal but concealed carry is not.

The 7 states in question effectively banned both open AND concealed carry, making it impossible to defend yourself with a firearm outside of the home. If you want to see a judicial pimp slap, read Alito teeing off on the dissenters in his concurrence.

It is kind of curious because they were pretty current technologically in other areas. Probably because they thought so little of pistols that making a full-auto in that caliber was a non-starter.

I had half of two fingers smashed off on a drilling rig back in the early eighties, sewn back on, but loss of range of motion, sensitivity in one, nearly all feeling in the other. So much so that I once shot a 2 1/2" trim nail from a nail gun straight into the end of it and didn't even know it. flash forward 30 years, whacked that finger REALLY hard with a hammer while building scaffolds on a power plant, it turned black and swole up to twice it's size, soooper sensitive to pressure and swollen for over a month...but...when it finally healed up the feeling that had been gone for 30 years was back.

329 Back to .380. I've mentioned it before, but my Ruger LCP goes everywhere with me, sometimes as BUG, but sometimes as primary.
Because it is so concealable it becomes the gun you always have instead of the one in the safe.
The size makes up for the mile-long trigger pull (although that makes it very safe for round in the chamber carry).
Snappy, but the long trigger pull keeps me on the front sight for longer. Better than minute of berm.

Not a bad option. You can even get a conversion kit to switch them back and forth.

An even better choice - if you can find one - is the Beretta Cheetah. It's smaller than the 92, but still big enough to absorb recoil like a dream.

I took one to a mini MiMoMe and it was the belle of the ball. Ask Eris about it. All the ladies were demanding crates of them be brought forth for immediate purchase.

The M9's frame can be difficult to manage for shooters w/ small hands. If shooting double action, those w/ short fingers might not be able to reach the trigger effectively. Can't speak to the .22LR version, but I have nothing bad to say about the reliability and function of the 9mm GI version.

My son sent me a copy of the ruling telling me exactly where the Alito concurrence started(I am so proud of him) and stated that it was in plain English. Yes, it is. 350 I have an RG 22 which is a cheap knock-off of the Rough Rider. A really crappy knock-off made in Germany.
It's 50 years old and still shoots well. And I've used it with brand new shooters to make them slow down and get used to single action.
That's also the lesson when we look at the cartridge and identify all the bits.

353 Century is a strange company. Back in the day, they would get pallets loaded with FAL's. Some full auto complete rifles and other parts and scraps. Pallets after pallets loaded to the brim.

They would sell this to that and build this and that and it was a hodgepodge of what went out the door.

If you know what your looking for and how to fix issues, their products work very well. If you want a shooter right out of the box you may be disappointed.

Try The Cornered Cat blog. I think the proprietor Kathy Jackson has more or less retired from training but her blog and past entries are still up. Lynn Givens of Rangemaster might also have put in some entries. Rangemaster puts out a free pdf newsletter each month packed with information and specifics regarding concealed carry.

Depending on your build and how you dress, there are specialty holster such as ankle holsters, shoulder holsters (requires a covering garment of course), outside the waistband (OWB), and so on. Belt Holsters do require a heavy belt which might or might not fit your style. Fanny pack or Sneaky Pete holsters are also useful or there are purses specifically designed for carry with a holster within.

They could not make enough sub machine guns to equip entire units with them. They had the tooling in place in multiple factories to make Arisaka rifles since 1897 and were so hide bound they never thought to ramp up production of SMG's during the war. That assumes they could get them and the ammo for them to the troops that needed them which they could not do after June 1942.

365 The long road back to the range continues. Mrs. Splunge's Glock G48 has arrived, but she has to go fill out a form, and you would not believe her schedule. My light .22 S&W revolver is not here yet, but I've been getting reacquainted with a Ruger .22 with a bulldog barrel, and a S&W 6904 that I used to treasure, because it points just where my hand thinks it points.

I've laid in a supply of spare magazines, much to the dismay of my fingertips. Those springs on new magazines are tough! I'll probably use that iTarget thing that was favorably reviewed here before we venture out, but things are starting to look very very ready. Really looking forward to getting back into all of this.

The Hyde amendment prohibits the federal government including the US Military from performing or paying for abortions. There is one carve out for active duty military to get an abortion in the case of rape, but that's it.

I'm going to guess you will have to go to the men's videos, as several of them deal with being... extra-sized.

One suggestion if you're wearing pants or ankle-length skirts: ankle holster. It doesn't work for all guns, but if you carry something small enough, it really carries well, IMO. I use a Bug Bite for my .38/.357 derringer, and I like it. (I haven't tried it with the G3c, yet.)

Those were wicked. I had a chance to burn a few drums through one of those back in the 80's. I can't even describe what it was like. It didn't move much, and there was a weird star burst pattern to the muzzle flash. It fired really quick. It was somewhat crude looking. Definite fun.

M9's will still be around for some time to come, especially in the National Guard and Reserves. The M17/M18 pistols have the "firearm" (i.e. serial numbered item) as the mechanism inside the frame. Therefore, if Private Daintyhands has to transfer their weapon to Sergeant Bigpaw, the armorer can remove the mechanism from the "small" size frame and drop it into a "large" size frame. This way, the Army can use the same pistol for both the field forces and those who require conceal carry (i.e. CID, SOF, etc.) without having to buy two different firearms. Replacement frames are just another spare part.

Welcome lcmal! The PHLster Concealment Workshop on Facebook (sorry) is a wealth of information for all body types and both (yeah, I said it!) genders. PHLster makes a concealment system called the Enigma (disclaimer -- I own one and like it very much), but the FB group is not exclusive to Enigma owners. Also, there are a number of tutorial articles and videos explaining concealed carry philosophy.

There is a bra based carrier-sigh--the Flash Bang holster you can look up.

Another variant is that there is are some clothes specifically for concealed carry with carry loops or even holsters added in secret pockets. Everything from T shirts (those are generally either for belly carry or under the armpit), to slacks (tactical 5.11 is one make), or even having customized tailoring integrating a holster into your clothing. In fall, many jackets or coats have pockets that can be used or you can buy one already done. There are also vests or oversized untucked patterned print shirts that can serve too.

Just remember, waist carry usually requires a reinforced belt that is fairly stiff. Ankle carry can work depending on covering garments but requires a unique drawing technique that is actually easier for women than men--works well in cars or a/c offices with desks where full length garments can be worn. Shoulder holsters require a covering garment as well as outside the waist carry (unless you use a Sneaky Pete and hide in plain sight).

395 lcmal, another couple of ideas are there undershirts out there that have 'pockets' under the armpits (Kramer used to make them, don't know if they still do) for women and men. You might look for a vest (e.g.Coronado Leather) that has CCW pockets. Also pocket carry, if you wear pants with pockets. Said pants probably aren't all that stylish, though.

Remember (to paraphrase Clint Smith) CCW isn't to be comfortable, it's to be comforting.

Yep. I have neuropathy so fingers feel like I am wearing a glove. One way to rebuild your strength is start firing double action revolvers in double action. I find the neuropathy matters most when trying to manipulate and feel relatively light pressure. I have less difficulty with harder pressure.

This appears once again to be a case of the military fighting the last war; they were disappointed in the performance of the 5.56/ M4 in Afghanistan, so they are going back to something closer to the M14. That is heavy, with heavy ammo so the soldier can't carry as much of it.

I saw a fantastic leather jacket at the saddlery, with concealed holster pockets inside on each side. It was very nice (if you want a rugged, weathered look) and not a bad price for good leather. But I had boots to buy, so I'm waiting for fall.

Yeah I know. I carried the 1911 and the M9 in uniform and I have a P320. The P320 and the M9 live in the safe and the 1911 gets carried occasionally. When the ray guns come out I doubt I will be around.

We used to do it with specialized motorcycle tools.
Person with tools packages them in a strong shipping box (well padded).
Person who wants to borrow them pays for shipping both ways.
If there is a line the borrower can ship them to the next person and the next person ships them back. (yeah someone might have to pay both ways and some would not. The tools are expensive so it didn't matter).

This only works in a trusted group... if someone gets the tools who isn't vetted they will not be returned.

I appendix carry with an elastic belly band. I have a G42 as my cc. It's pretty small, and I've had to practice quite a bit wearing it around. First the house, then a quick trip to fill up the gas tank or go to the grocery store.

It's important enough to spend some money and try a few. The owb holster I have for my PPQ is large, but in the perpetual rainy weather that is seattle, I can easily conceal under my raincoat.

I'm thinking to try a corset holster next.

The cartridge of the new 6.8mm X 51 round and its bi-metallic composition (stainless steel base, brass body) is the new tech the Army is betting on. The increased chamber pressure this round produces is the likely reason why the AR-10 didn't make the cut. You're getting 3,000+ FPS muzzle velocity out of the 13.5" barrel. You need very high chamber pressures to do that. That's more than a cartridge made of brass alone can take.

Back in the bad old days, we used to train with grenades in little tire buildings. Basically little huts built out of used tires. One session I threw the live grenade a little too hard at the opposite wall and it bounced out of the room.

Thanks people here helped me cope, I also have a 1/2 sister in the sanitorium with severe dementia.

The horde helped me cope, my hypothesis unforunately unprovable thanks to sister not donating her body to science like mom and grandma is that there is a genetic trait the women of the bloodline risk.

The issue is a VERY slight difference in the shape of the rim. The Federal ammo has a slight rounding of the upper side of the rim, and the extractor can’t get a good purchase on these rounds.

So back in May I ordered a new rifle. A Ruger PC carbine in 40ca. Paid half up front for a deposit.
Called yesterday, no gun yet, no idea when they'll have it.
Is this normal? In this state I have to go through a FFL dealer, so I don't know what other path I can take to acquire the gun I want.

I shoot a lot of clays in both 12ga and 20ga. The problem is that NOBODY has powder or primers. I use Red Dot because it's so versatile. nada. Also a severe shortage of Wi. AA low brass once fired hulls. Maybe have a list of places that currently stock powder and primers as well as ammo?
Just a thought.
