Pet Peeves: Pretentiously Incorrect Words (And Open Thread)
I’m not a grammar snob.
I don’t mind bad grammar or incorrect word usage – there’s probably plenty of it in my writing. I just can’t stand pretentiously incorrect word usage. That’s why I cringe when it’s the result of journalists or business leaders incorrectly using fancy words. Here are a few: RETICENT – Journalists love this word. And almost none of them knows what it means. It does not mean “reluctant” or “hesitant” or some mash-up of those two words. It means someone chooses not to speak or share his thoughts. The most awkward use of the word is when a journalist writes that someone “was reticent to speak.” That hurts my eyeballs. No, if he chose not to speak, he was simply being reticent. INFLECTION POINT – An inflection point is neither a ceiling nor a fork in the road. A line that is increasing will continue to increase after an inflection point, albeit with a different curve and a change in the dominant axis. LEARNING CURVE – This is another statistical term misused by people who don’t know what it means. A steep learning curve means that learning the task is easy, therefore the learning rapidly moves up the y-axis. A flat learning curve means that one learns slowly. Pretty much everyone who uses the term “steep learning curve” means “flat learning curve,” and I want to correct each and every one of them. FEWER THAN - We all know the grammatical rule “less money / fewer dollars.” We know not to say “less dollars.” But if “fewer than ten dollars” sounds awkward, that’s because it is awkward. It should be “less than 10 dollars.“ I’m not sure how the “fewer than” trend started. I’ll blame journalists who are afraid of being mocked for getting fewer/less wrong. The grammar.com website backs me up on this.Thus, in a word, use less when you cannot count the noun modified. Use fewer when you can. Use less with singular nouns; fewer, with plural nouns. But if you’re using a plural noun to measure a chunk or amount of money or time, then you should use less (less than five years, less than 2,500 dollars).One more thing…this isn’t a grammar peeve, or actually a peeve at all, I’m just curious why so many people started using the word “whilst.” Several friends I grew up with in the Texas suburbs several decades ago now use the word “whilst” instead of “while.” I know that they didn’t use that word while growing up. How did it become so widely used here in the States? Was there some British show that everyone watched except for me? I never read or watched Harry Potter, is that where it came from? Do you have any grammar pet peeves? Just for fun, feel free to correct me on any bad grammar or word usage you find in this post. I deserve it! Also, Open Thread.

Only because of constant bad grammar and being unused to it. There's nothing more awkward about using "fewer" than "less" in this sentence than "I don't say it that way."
Grammar and word use changes over time usually for the worse, but in times of rapid corruption of language and increasing ignorance, its probably best to try to be precise and make your little battles by being as correct as you can without seeming arrogant or pedantic.
I have given up on correcting "begs the question" because everyone uses it wrong (I even catch myself doing so) to the point that its become almost standard use of the term despite being a gross misuse.

The first is that neither the Soviet or German analogies have any bearing on where we are. By the 1920s, the Red Army had already won the civil war. So you're skipping to the end to make your argument.
Germany also doesn't work because while not everyone liked the Nazis, lots of career soldiers welcomed military expansion in the Wehrmacht. Thus the cadres of trainers were intact and career officers were on board. You did not have disaffected people resigning/declining to re-enlist.
Also, neither armies were crippled by a divisive political correctness focusing on pronouns and feelings. I get some folks think that this superstructure will be discarded when it becomes inconvenient to the Revolution, but that is a huge and poorly-supported assumption. (con't)

The problem was that the purge was incomplete when the revolutionaries got out of hand, so the Army split apart.
The 'purged' officers and men were quickly able to rally to the rebel side, acting as a force multiplier. At the same time, fissures within the various leftist factions left them just as busy sniping at each other as they were the right.

There's also many words/phrases that are part of SAE, that aren't technically MORE correct than words/phrases that aren't, they're just standard. Because we say so.

Maybe they're thinking that the military hospitals will offer it for female soldiers who get knocked up (because forcing military docs to learn how to do something they probably have moral objections to is a recipe for success). IIRC the VA system isn't run out of the Pentagon so who knows if they'd be on board.

I remember the gripe against "I could care less". "What you mean is that you COULDN'T care less," people would say.
And yet the meaning was absolutely clear to the person issuing the statement and the one "correcting" it. But the way I had always heard the phrase was sarcastically, "[As if] I could care less."
It's very common in English to drop words even if that means the sentence (on some technical, grammatical level, as if we were all computers parsing language) is incorrect.
"Steep learning curve" refers not to the rate of learning but to the difficulty of learning.
Irregardless of other meanings.

1) "Utilize". It's endemic now, presumably because people think it sounds smart, but 99% of the time "use" is just as good and a lot less pretentious. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
2) "Enormity". This one seems to going through the process of having its meaning changed by (mis)use, sadly (dictionaries are starting to include the erroneous usage as a tertiary definition). It does not mean "very large", it means "monstrously evil." Thus, the Holocaust was 'an enormity'; President Taft was not.

I created a nice big supply of other things too, so we can splurge on other things when the real shortages happen. I did not go crazy with frozen food, as a power outage would destroy that.

I explain to my students thus: those "piecewise" functions that cause so much brain trouble are easy to understand: it's a function that changes its behavior in different situations, e.g. (here the high and middle school students all get it) you changing your behavior between lunchtime with friends and my classroom, and when you are home with your parents.
"Inflection points" are just those points at which the function (or person, or whatever) changes its behavior.
That's not math, exclusively. It's just life?

When I say "steep learning curve" I mean something very specific - and I usually say it in reference to Adobe software. What I mean is that it is easy to become *proficient* at it, and then takes awhile to get *good* at it.
IOW, some task that is deceptively simple to learn the first few weeks/months, and then you find out it gets pretty devilish later on.

Second, more likely due to inflation in general. Everything costs more so there is less money for activities that require driving. Take inflation away and just have gas on its own at $6 (which I know is not feasible but for a point) and not much driving changes from that aline.

Before this thread moves on, I want to say how much I enjoyed the Book Thread this am. Glancing over it, I was reminded of a number of other short stories that I would have recommended as well. "Child of All Ages" by P.J. Plauger is one.
I'd also recommend a number of short stories by Dorothy Parker, esp. "Glory in the Daytime" and "Mrs. Hofstadter on Josephine Street."

I am bad about this, I have a hard time getting its and it's straight. Drives my editors crazy. For some reason I just cannot seem to work it out in my head.
And I confess that I very much prefer some of the British spellings. Grey just looks better than Gray to me.

Its and It's is easy. If you can replace it with 'it is' then it's with an apostrophe, otherwise it's the other one.
In Oxford English (the Queen's English) grey is a colour and Gray is a proper name like Churchill. Colour comes from Old French 'colour'.
BTW we are not consistent: we use 'ter instead of 'tre (as in meter) but then we have words where we don't do that. An example escapes me at the moment.

I used to have a boss I HATED. Recently. Couple of years back. In fact, I was days from tendering my resignation, against the strongly stated objections of my wife, when she was replaced with extreme prejudice by her own boss.
But one trait I specifically hated about her, a lot, was that one. We have a national presence, with a heavy presence in the South. Most of our best offices are in the South.
This was a Jewish woman from New York with a very, very high opinion of herself (picture a tubby, clapped-out, middle aged Elaine Benes). She talked about anyone with a drawl as if they were gap-toothed inbreed sheepfuckers. I mean she didn't even bother hiding her contempt. She would crack jokes about them being dumb farmers and shit, because she thought since I was an East Coast Jew like her, that I felt the same.
And these were all much smarter, savvier businessmen than her, and she would just talk down to them, straight to their faces. There were times I just wanted to choke her from my own embarrassment.

I've discovered a regrettable tendency of mine to type this word far more than I need in my fiction. Part of my self-editing process is to do a search for that, whether followed by a space or a comma. Most of the time, unless it's in dialog, it needs to go.

Was in a professional writing class (week long) for our Audit team and the class was being taught by a very attractive 30-something in a very short tight skirt, tight blouse, and curvaceous body. One of the jokers in the group used that quote in reference to writing effective audit points. This happened on the first day. For the remaining 4 days, she dressed very conservatively and modestly. Fast is an adjective.
But in the case of fast, I think it's one that's in the process of melting through parts of speech, so I don't even notice in it certain cases... "Bill was driving way too fast, and got a ticket."

it's 'should have', not 'should of'.

[ACTUALLY], decimation was a method of enforcing discipline in the Roman Army. If a unit broke and ran during battle, one in ten of the soldiers were selected by lot, then the remaining soldiers in the unit were required to kill them.
[SO] to "decimate" originally meant destroying one tenth of yourselves.

Giving depositions, I have, a couple of times, deliberately suckered plaintiff attorneys into phrasing their questions in such a form that my response left them red-faced with embarrassment.
On one occasion, it caused the defendant team to howl with laughter, and execute high-fives.

Respectfully, I would say that a cohort - 600 men as you correctly stated - is more equivalent to a battalion. The company equivalent would be a century. Not nitpicking - although I'm sure it seems like it. Which I don't mean.

For correct word usage, let me recommend "Words on Words" by the late Prof. John Bremner, known as the pope of copy editing at the University of Kansas. He died more than 30 years ago. My ultimate peeve is the misuse of "margin." A MARGIN IS NOT A RATIO. "A 3-1 margin" is incorrect. The margin is the difference -- in this example, two.
Reporters often quote cops saying, "The suspect fled on foot." No! If he got away, he isn't a suspect. You need to have someone named as the suspect. And as for "fled on foot" -- that's a convoluted way to say "ran away." If the guy didn't run, there's the peg for your report.

Journalists and politicians like to refer to intentional murder (and mass murder) as a "tragedy" so as not to call it what it was, especially if the killer is a minority.
It is a tragedy when a natural disaster floods a school and students drown. When a shooter goes into the school and kills the children, their deaths are TRAGIC, but they were the victims of a killer, not a "tragedy."

"High Court" is another one. That's for ploofy European people who have used such courts to uphold all manner of nonsense. In my country we have Supreme Courts, or Courts of Appeal (thinking of West Virginia). That's it. No High Courts attended by lawyers dressed up as transvestites at a California day school with wigs and colored flowy robes. Dammit, I hate that term!

That reminds me of the word "terrific." At one time, it meant something not good, as in, "The damage from the hurricane was terrific." And remember the song , No Place Like Home for the Holidays? There's a line in there that says, "The traffic was terrific," meaning bad. That's the way my Dad always used the word, but nowadays it connotes something great.

2. "Lags behind". This drives me crazy. Can you ever lag ahead?
3. Lately I have noticed the word "curate" being horribly abused, as in "I curated some eggs from the henhouse." Curate means to select, organize and interpret exhibition pieces, as for an art museum. It doesn't mean simply to pick.

That you're not counting the heads, you're saying that the state of having two heads engaged in a solving a problem is preferable to the state of having only one. Likewise, we're not counting how many networks your'e sending data on; that would be obvious. We're saying that our technology that doubles capacity with two networks is better than one that only has the ability to use one stream.
I lost. The ad campaign went ahead, and was only memorable to me. Alas, 3Com no longer exists. Probably owing to poor grammar in their ads.
