Good afternoon and welcome to the Weekend Hobby Thread. I can't draw worth a tinker's dam. But, I just might take up the hobby of our opening meme.

Apologies in advance, the internet is out and I'm using my cell phone as a hot spot. Talk about hobbies, what one must learn to be somewhat technically savvy.

Our friend -Blake - semi lurker in marginal standing sent 3 Attachments and a little history about his hobby. I'm envious. Care to teach?

I think most people are aware of the cutting boards I do.
The one on the right I made as a housewarming gift for a niece and nephew. The one on the left went to the NoVaMoMe. (Let's call them cutting board backgammon and cutting board parquet)
Cutting board backgammon was made from leftover wood from a side table I built at the request of the lovely Mrs. Blake.
Cutting board parquet accompanied cutting board tetris to the NoVaMoMe.

7 That stick bird reminds of last time I was in Vegas. There was a comedian whose name I forget who had those plastic wall billboards up all along the strip as you walked along advertising his shows. Someone had taken a black magic marker and had drawn a large penis on the crotch of the comedian on each and everyone.

Now that's talent.

12 Definitely envy people with the skills and inclination to build woodworking projects. My foray into woodworking was a failure. The only thing I ever built was a workbench, and that was only because I was taking a class where you build a workbench.

Turned out I didn't want to build things, but I sure enjoyed sharpening the chisels and plane blades, trying to get the perfect peeling with a Japanese plane, and so on.

So now I sharpen/hone knives and razors, and try to get the perfect shave, or the perfect cooking cuts. Or just play around with my sharpening stones. Happiness is an end in itself, even if you don't get any furniture out of the deal.

14 Question for Blake. What kind/brand or mix of glue are you using for your cutting boards?

Observation for Blake. Your work is superb, and your creativity and "eye", unmatched. I've seen a zillion cutting boards & patterns. Yours are unique, superior and at the absolute pinnacle of the craft.

22 If I had a Blake cutting board, I would use it all the time. Tools are meant to be used.

You see it in the knife world, people who collect knives they never, ever use. That's fine, for them. I guess they like to look at them, or just own them, or something. Maybe they're like having art on your wall.

23 My hobby is repairing all of the stuff in my life that seems to require constant engagement.

Spent this morning tearing down a non-functioning air-fryer. That proved to be a fused temperature fuse/link, buried deep, deep, deep in in its Chinese guts.

Waiting on an mail-ordered fuel pump for my Kohler-powered lawn tractor (the out-of-control grass continues to grow), which I could not find locally.

24 I take my comment back... I would use those boards. Everyday. Nice cutting boards are really hit and miss these days. A pair of Teak boards we got 2-3 years ago are looking pretty trashy... even tho' they've been oiled as necessary.

25 I love walnut. Here in western Mo we have some of the most chocolaty walnut. I bought a board once to finish a project. Came from the St. Joe area. I had to stain it to match what I had.
Clear finish only on walnut, IMO. Once did a sideboard for my Mom, and left a wee bit of sapwood in the middle to show off the true color of the wood. She asked if I could stain it out... mothers.
I did a Mission style bed... out of walnut, of course.

26 My sister made a cutting board in HS wood shop. After mom had it for a few years as strictly decoration, sis took it and gave it to someone else. We still have the lamp sis made on the lathe. I am not talented like that; but can do redneck fixes.

Last week when I was already running late the water heater drain valve on my trailer wouldn't close fully. The pressure pump won't work if the drain valves are not all closed. Then even though I was using a 2nd wrench trying to avoid ripping the plastic tube I still managed to shear it off. So I found a threadless plastic cap about the right size and some super goop and sealed it that way. I'll have to get a proper valve put on later but I had water on demand for my trip.

I like buying spindles for spinning, partly because they can be made in beauriful woods. A maker in OR, Ed Jenkins uses local wood a lot. I have a couple of his lilac spindles. Site is yarntools.com. I am partial to cherry and butternut too.

I finally finished an audio power amp I started over 6 years ago. It's a fan-cooled Class A amp/space heater based on the "Amp Camp Amp" circuit designed by legendary amp designer Nelson Pass. My knowledge of electronics is limited, so my main focus is on packaging. You can check it out here:

34 We have a peninsula in our kitchen that has a 6/4 maple top for me to roll bread. I use 3 coats of food grade tung oil every year.

35 I am still mulling how to deal with my tack compartment plastic corner water tank for horse water. 1st trip this year I filled the tank, got to ride and no water (no biggie as RM had water available) The hose was off the tank and needed a new gasket and I thought that the sole problem. Never got around to testing until right before this trip when I found that the hose threads were stripped on my tank. I'm thinking I could maybe just get some PCV glue and attach the hose permanently. I never take it off.

37 I had a section of #1 black pipe rot out. It is for my steam heat. So, went to a plumbing supply store, explained my issue and they gave me a Dresser coupling.

42 Woodworking is my husbands hobby. As I type he's in the garage milling down walnut boards to make 2 end tables. He's built 5 pieces of furniture so far. If you take the cost of all the tools and supplies each piece has probably cost... several thousand dollars. 😳
As he builds more the cost of all the tools gets spread out. Has he saved us any money by building stuff himself? Nope, but he does build nice pieces and I know they are well made.

43 I didn't know it when ordering that might be getting printed figures for my miniature armies. Have wanted oxen teams for wagons for a long time so found some from a train accessory company and in a email said they were being printed in France but should get them on a couple weeks. Mostly hope they are compatible scale but looked at a few videos how to make oxen yoke so can't wait.

I bought a set of Naniwa Chosera Pros a couple of months ago, along with a Naniwa Aotoshi "Green Brick of Joy". It's an interesting adventure. I usually do my sharpening with a modified 1x42 belt sander and Klingspor abrasives.

I cut and donated a 30 ft black walnut tree to a local senior center woodshop. It started leaning against the gutters. Not to worry though, the squirrels made certain there are plenty of black walnut starts to replace it.

Nice stones! And, topnotch sandpaper.

I'm a Shapton Glass fan, but there is a ton of personal preference involved. I do have the 800 and 3000 Chosera Pros, and they are great stones.

53 Marine Status Update: With the completion of the varnishing, replacement canvas and cockpit cushions are next on the agenda. After a six-week wait, custom cushions are scheduled to be delivered this week in time for the July 4 festivities.

ETA on a new canvas dodger (polycarbonate window panels!) and bimini is unresolved. Quoted wait times are 8-12 weeks.

Decks are crying for a fresh coat of nonskid paint.

Requested increase on the credit card limit has been approved.

Floating and drinking is the order of the day today.

54 A major garage/basement cleaning is underway. My 50+ years of hobby/fixemup materials reached the point where I just couldn't stand it any more.

I've found things I had forgotten I had. And how many coffee cans full of nuts/bolts/screws/nails/hinges/wire is really needed?

Two of my boys are set to come over and pick through the 'to be gone pile' shortly. I really just want much of this stuff to go.

I did put a trailer hitch on the new ride yesterday though so, that's one monster cardboard box that can be set out.

Thanks. I've always thought of the Shapton system as the "Zen" process. The single most essential item that I've acquired recently is an Australian-sourced kangaroo tail strop. Worth every penny.

My ability with wood working exists but at a low level. But Splunge is right. There is real satisfaction in keeping blades and tools that are properly sharp. Whether it's kitchen knives that can chop or slice paper thin strips or a plane or chisel that gives beautiful, fragrant curls of wood, I like it.

72 I really love east TN. There were two rebuilt log cabins in one town that we both wanted. One had a spring box. The other place was a dog trot style. We just couldn't do anything to make it happen. And I don't see deals like that any more. I hope you get it. It sounds like a wonderful place.

78 Wooden cutting boards are much safer and hygienic. "Cross contamination" is apparently a huge issue nowadays, or at least is all anybody wants to talk about, but the problem, is predicated on the fact that wood has some natural germicidal properties over time.

Plastic cutting surfaces hold all the nasties deep within the scratches. As the good ole boys say "There's Yer Problem..."

79 Jenkins really is a master and folks bring him woods to try, which is how he got the lilac. It even has a few purple streaks in it. I like going into stores in Portland that sell exotic woods. I just like looking at the wood. I need to see if ai can find my husband's stash in the garage. I'll take it with me. He had taken some lessons on turning wood but didn't do a lot of it.

80 I was a former collector of a number of items. . Coins and Trapper knives just two of my collections. I'm at a point where I won't have anyone to leave my collections to but I'm hesitant to sell them. They are just stored away where I haven't even looked at them for a number of years. I don't know what my hesitation is.

82 Working on cars CAN save you a lot of money. At least if you stick to the sorts of cars that aren't too modern like Crown Vics and such. Labor is a hundred an hour now so things like oil changes, brakes, alternator replacement, belts, hoses, window regulators you can save a lot without being a master mechanic. The more modern the ride, the harder it gets and the more odds you will need some sort of computer interface device to do it.

85 HS Woodworking class: we were given block of wood with a hump and told to plane it flat. I overdid it and had a hollow. So planed the ends, ..... and I had a hump again. Eventually that approx. 2" thick block was as thin as a lath. I was better in Metalworking. I liked to heat stuff to red heat and beat the crap out of it on an anvil. So I made a BBQ fork (learnt to rivet) and a copper ashtray. The only thing I have made in my adult life was a bookcase. I designed it and bought the materials. My Dad actually cut the planks to proper size for me. Dad was very skilled with his hands and was a mechanic by trade but did fix watches for the nuns when he and Mum were hiding, in a convent, from the Germans. I used about a gazillion coats of polyurethane and it came out just like those super-mirror-like bar tops. No point in throwing the surplus varnish away, is there?

I think it might have been here - someone was cleaning out their dad's garage after his passing. You know the kind, sturdy pre-war construction, grew up through the "great depression" and thus learned to save everything. Might be useful some day.

He found cabinets and drawers full of stuff meticulously organized and labeled. He was amazed to find some "Pencils - Too Short To Sharpen" and "Bits of String".

Sometimes you lose interest in something but you don't want to just toss it. For me its tube radios. Back in the 90s they fascinated me and the only ones that were pricey were the 30s wood cathedral ones so I ended up with about 15 of them. About ten years ago I lost Interest and they have been sitting on the tops of bookshelves. I would sell them easily and not worry about max dollar if I knew they would go somewhere to be appreciated. But not motivated enough to go seek out whoever still collects them around here if anyone still does.

Side note: I've seen several youtube videos which talk about using pallet wood to make cutting boards. While it seems like it might work, I also aware of the fact pallets are also used to move a lot of very toxic substances and I'm leery of the wood being contaminated.

95 Somewhere downtown Seattle walking the sidewalks killing time many years ago I found a woodworking shop. It was closed, due to the weekend, but I peered inside.

On display were some of the most amazing things I've ever seen made with wood. Things I thought not possible. Amazing materials, exotic woods, improbable shapes, perfect joinery and finishes, colors, etc. And probably unobtanium price wise.

One really cool thing that caught my eye was a Grandfatherr clock completely made of wood. Meaning the clockworks itself - all the gears and escapement, and even the mainspring! It was unreal. There are some really talented people out there. I am not one of them.

99 78 Wooden cutting boards are much safer and hygienic. "Cross contamination" is apparently a huge issue nowadays, or at least is all anybody wants to talk about, but the problem, is predicated on the fact that wood has some natural germicidal properties over time.
Plastic cutting surfaces hold all the nasties deep within the scratches. As the good ole boys say "There's Yer Problem..."

The advantage of growing up in Africa - a very strong immune system. No Montezuma's Revenge for me. I've eaten bad meat and bad fish with no consequence except to my taste. We had never heard of Listeria before returning to the USA. Unrefrigerated eggs? If they don't smell then they're fine. Did you say something about meat and poultry and cutting-boards? We don't worry about that. Seriously my first 4 years in Jinja, the meat market was main;y meat on banana leaves on the ground. A whole fillet mignon cost one shilling (20 sh to the pound. My Dad was earning 90 pounds per month before overtime).

I have no idea what the retail market is cause I've been swapping saw logs for kiln dried lumber for 30 years. Right now, I'm owed somewhere around 25,000 bdft. Haven't done a wood project in years.

105 I could almost imagine having a fountain pen hobby. That's really surprising to me, because I used one in grade school, a hideous Schaefer that put ink spots on the paper, leaked into my shirts, and was all-around wretched. I don't remember why I used it. Maybe pure cussed determination.

Recently, I said what the heck, and got a basic Lamy from Amazon. Turns out I like it better than the G2 gel pens I thought were the best thing ever. It has a great feel when writing. It slows me down just enough that my handwriting is legible to others, and makes writing a pleasure.

But how the heck do you have more than one fountain pen? If I don't use the thing for a couple of days, it has already started to dry out. Hmmm, maybe it's because I live in a desert.

106 Ebay is a great place to unload vintage audio. Most AM radios aren't worth a whole bunch, but some still garner some nice coin. Unusual or brightly colored are pretty collectible. Bakelite didn't really come in any colors, but there was an alternative, the name escapes me.

For a while in the 90s certain vintage sets were getting $10k to $20k for just a basic art deco kitchen radio. Hopalong Cassidy and Snow White radios were pretty desirable too.

I use Walrus cutting board oil and put a coat of Walrus cutting board wax over top. There is no real "best" only real criteria, as far as I'm concerned is: food safe. What I use is a preference, not "the best" as I don't think there really is a best, only a preferred product or method.

I recommend Howard butcher block oil for maintenance purposes. If one uses the board as intended, it's going to get beat up and lose that factory showroom shine. As it should.

109 I think what happens with some of this is that no one is collecting it or using it. It's how I wound up with the treadles. Fountain pens, typewriters, tube radios, stuff that you don't want to see just destroyed. But there's only so much you can use or store. I like all of the above. Fortunately fountain pens take up less space and I only have one tube radio.

My husband would love that. But then he'd need a mill to cut planks and then he'd have to season the wood. Oh, and a trailer to move the wood, and something that could lift said wood onto trailer then onto the mill. If the trees are dead or you want them gone, you could probably get a local mill to come out and pay You for the trees and they would do all the work. Especially if they are larger trees. some of the bigger walnut planks will sell for thousands.

119 I have three TWISBIs in use right now. I cleaned up all the others, and will ink them up as needed. I use one for journaling every night. Second is for my "venting" journal, where I jot down stuff that doesn't go in the regular one. And the other is used for notes at work. These don't seem to dry out. I was using a new Conklin that was always causing me problems. Some of it is the pen.

I had a place in Kentucky long time ago with a couple of stands of walnut trees. Had to sell the place before I could harvest the trees. Veneer companies would buy them on site. One stand had an old cemetery in it which might have been an issue. Left a lot of money standing.

Concur. It depends mainly on the blade material and hardness. A rough rule of thumb (for me) is: Japanese-made knife - use waterstones.Hardness for a well-made Japanese knife starts around 61 or 62 Rockwell. If you use a "diamond" stone on a blade with that hardness, you will destroy the edge with micro-chipping. Not a pretty sight under magnification (don't ask me how I know). Buying a moderately priced 1000 grit King water stone is a good way to start.

151 Well, back to an old hobby. Just ordered a couple parts for an Iver Johnson top break revolver. Should be a nice little gun when it goes back together, which is the frustrating part of these projects. No matter how many of the old top breaks you have worked on, it's always a challenge reassembling them, and you usually remember "the trick" after you finish on the umpteenth attempt. This particular one has about 90% nickel left and a nearly perfect bore. A lift spring (an Iver Johnson improvement) went kapow.

170 I made a nice cutting board in another lifetime using walnut and maple pinstriping. The final board shape was an ellipse and I did some funky math shit with the focal points and a tic-tac-toe style grid.

Gave it away as a gift, never saw it again.

171 I've never done any fine woodworking and am jealous of the demonstrated and inferred skills here.

I have been doing some plasma cutter art. The Mrs. wanted to weld so I did some shopping and she welded up a cowboy twirling a lasso, it's pretty cute.

Lately (as in this morning) I cleaned up a tow hitch with 3 different grinders and then cut 3 pieces to weld weld to the hitch tomorrow. I'm strengthening the top of the downtube which gets a lot of torque from the ~100lb drag.
I couldn't finish dragging the yard so after I'm done I'll get to test and see if I did enough reinforcement or I get to start over.

I sort-of did too. In my junior high and high school years I got pretty good at 1/72 plastic aircraft and armor modeling. When I tried to get back into it a few years after I graduated college, I had to re-learn the skills. It was frustrating and I quit after building a half-dozen planes. Oh, well.

So far, I am able to keep running on it, and my doctor tells me I can't damage it. So as long and I can stand the discomfort, I can keep running.

Maybe you can pick up a cheap lathe off craigslist.
I'm no expert on rolling pins, but I'll bet Bluebell uses a rolling pin regularly. She likes to bake, I think.

My only suggestion is heft. Something weighty...enough to brain an intruder. I believe a good rolling pin can double as a self-defense weapon.

192 I have seen/handled 5 of Blake's cutting boards and I assure you, they are as beautiful in person as they look on here. Really lovely. And not only was he kind enough to send them as raffle prizes for the MoMes, he also included a bottle of conditioning oil and a letter of instruction to go with each cutting board. Very kind and generous, is our Blake.

I don't think I could bring myself to cut on it, but I would definitely use it for the most beautiful charcuterie board ever.

Keep looking for caps. They do show up once in a while. Even Cabelas has them now and then. It is Dor miss. Dynamite Nobel 1075 caps And if you do find some caps, get them in bulk if possible. are often easier to find.

206 Beer brewing: I assigned all the costs of the initial equipment to the 1st batch (48bottles of beer, they were not cheap per drink!), after that the beers cost about 11 cents.
The problem with beer brewing isn't so much that you become a drunk, it's that you can't slim down because you have 11 beers on tap and you want to brew 2 more types (5 gals each which is about 2 cases).

I was buying 50lb bags of malted 2row barley, grinding it myself per batch and had 15 types of yeast in my 'yeast farm'. I only had about 5 types of hops.

I've had one serious kickback. When I'm cutting something iffy, I stand off to one side. Kickbacks are no joke. I got a mild bruise, and feel fortunate that's all that happened.

heh. Cheapo jobsite saw, Kobalt. I spent some time squaring the saw up so I get good cuts. Freud makes a "glue line" table saw blade. thin kerf, gives an extremely nice uniform cut. I'd like to put Freud off as a fad, but, darn it, right now, they make some great blades. However, I also spend a ton of time running the wood through the jointer so I've got a good straight edge to cut against. I'd also mention the saw struggles with hard woods. I can run 8/4 mahogany through it, but, if I tried to run same thickness maple or purple heart, no bueno.

As soon as I can afford it, I'm moving up to a Sawstop PCS. I really like the idea of not losing a finger to a table saw.

In his early 70s, my grandfather almost took off a thumb using his table saw. This was a guy who had used one for many decades, he was a master tool make for the Navy, and got his start maintaining steam engines before WW I. He taught all the grandkids safety with tools, effectively. None of us ever got hurt using power tools. But one moment of inattention was almost a disaster. That event, and his lessons, has stayed with me and probably prevented some nasty injuries.
