Top Story

  • So, went to the Ikea site today to price some bookshelves.

    Last chance to buy.

What? You've sold like a hundred million of the damn things. You can't possibly be so stupid as to stop making them.
It ïs estïmated that every fïve seconds, one BILLY bookcase ïs sold somewhere ïn the world. Pretty ïmpressïve consïderïng we launched BILLY ïn 1979. It's the booklovers choïce that never goes out of style.
    Well, not anymore. (Fast Company)

For decades, Billy bookcases have come in two versions: The cheap white ones coated with foil paper, and the more expensive wood veneer ones.

There will no longer be a wood veneer option. At all. In fact, they're already gone, so if you were planning on putting anything other than the cheap white version in your brand new house, tough shit.

With my revised plan to put shelves in the hallways, I was planning on using the cheap white version anyway. Guess I'll do something else in the rooms where I want to match furniture and not just have it be inoffensive.

  • At least there are donuts on the way.

Tech News

  • Speaking of which, the best small Android tablet has gone the way of wood veneer as well. I mean, there was only one adequate small Android tablet as it was - the Lenovo Tab M8 FHD - and that's gone. As far as I can tell everything left on the market has the same screen resolution as the original Nexus 7 from 2012. The crappy one, not the 2013 model that was actually pretty good.

Lenovo's new Legion Y700 would be perfect - 2560x1600 8.8" screen and Arm A77 cores that blow the old A53 cores in the Tab M8 out of the water. Except that it's kind of expensive - and only available in China.

  • Everyone else just leaks stuff online: A Japanese city council worker has lost a USB drive containing personal details of every resident of Amagasaki - about half a million people. (The Guardian)

In his defense, he was very drunk.

  • AMD's Zen 4 has a somewhat disappointing IPC uplift over Zen 3 - only 8-10%. Overall performance will improve by more than that because clock speeds will be significantly higher and multi-threading is improved on the high-end models.

Intel meanwhile is promising up to double-digit performance improvements. (WCCFTech)

In theory that means anything up to 99%, but I think they mean anything up to 10%.

They are also packing in an extra eight Efficiency cores though, which should improve the multi-threaded performance by up to 30% on top of those single-threaded gains.

Disclaimer: No veneer for you.

2 Pixy, Ace could put some shelves up for you, if you wanted

3 We have shelves - but at what cost?

4 7"~ tablets are great. Bigger just feel like sitting too close to the TV. Nvidia shield tablet was a great deal in it's day.

Most states, unfortunately, do. So if I had to guess which state you're in -- and was wrong, it's quite possible at least my first ten guesses wouldn't count as the make-up of the Senate is that bad.

Never was a government chamber so full of imbecilic knaves spouting codswallop than the US Senate chamber in session.

Why aren't MEN forced to relinquish control over THEIR bodies to provide blood transfusions, bone marrow donations, kidney donations, etc. to those unborn humans (resulting from their sperm) after they become post-born humans who may need those body parts in order to live?

NY governors: In the 21st Century, we've had two governors resign: One for using high-end (pun intended) prostitutes and money laundering the payments and the other for being a sexual creep and using government resources to write his book, as well as earning his Indian spirit name, Gov. Granny Killer. After the first one resigned, we got a blind lt. governor stepping up to the plate. After the second one resigned, we now have a governor who thinks the 2nd Amendment only applies to muskets. 1/2

20 Other than that, NY is doing fine--, ah who the hell am I kidding? We are one fucked up state. Even one of the shittiest mayors in NYC history, even worse than Crown Heights Riots Dinkins, progressive former Mayor Big Bird, nee Warren Wilhelm (daddy issues, you see), thought he could/should be president. Unfounded egos without a clue abound here in the Empire State.

Possibly Andrew Cuomo's greatest claim to historical fame is that he and his crappy brother, Fredo, may have brought down CNN. 2/2

22 Reading the Ikea article...

"But it's worth noting that to get all this durability, foil paper is generally coated in polyurethane, which is a plastic. Ikea clarified that it's not technically using polyurethane on the new Billy. It will use another plastic, but Ikea says, overall, the new coating will be a net gain for the environment."

There ya go. Net gain for the environment. They won't say what the new plastic is, but it's "better"

33 Morning tech preps!
We have the wood veneer Billy; around 23 years old

Hey Pixy & nerds, I have a tech question:
There's a old site (which probably isn't maintained anymore) with Latin & English prayers. The Latin prayers used to be rendered perfectly, but now they are messed up, showing weird characters instead of diacritical marks.
Is there any simple way for me to fix it/ switch it back if I were to copy and paste the text to my computer for my own reference?

38 A power surge took out the power supply in my household server yesterday. I must have been asleep when I plugged it in to the wrong side of the UPS, but it's too late to worry about that now. I ordered a new 1000W power supply from Amazon and it arrived three hours later. I'll install it after I get back from my walk.

39 Not a fan of particle board furniture. IKEA disposables and kitchen odds and ends are OK but the only furniture I like is a couple of their laminated bent wood chairs.

Good luck with the long term durability of the shelves.

40 Hey pixy did you hear MS is sunsetting Atom to force more people onto VS editor? I think Atom came out well before them acquiring gethub. So they bought gethub and are sticking the shiv into it. I expect more of this.

41 From what I'm hearing Zen 4 and Raptor Lake are going to be very comparable. The real question becomes whether Raptor Lake will actually make it to market before or after Zen 4.

If Zen 4 is a 5.5ghz chip, AM5 is probably a four year platform, and Vcache basically means you don't have to go beyond the base DDR5 ram spec to get everything, if both CPUs are pretty comparable, I can't see a huge upside to Raptor Lake, even if it ends up 5-10% faster.

This is an encoding decoding website:

https://tinyurl.com/encodedec

I tried from ISO-8859-1 to utf-8 and it was close but not quite. You could try pasting some text from the website there into the box and try a few combinations.

44 2 Pixy, Ace could put some shelves up for you
Posted by: Bruce at June 25, 2022 04:37 AM (vd8XM)

The word "not" has inexplicable dropped out of your phrasing, there.

Posted by: m at June 25, 2022 11:26 AM (YtnN4)

45 The best selection is encode with ISO-8859-15 decode with utf-8

It just won't show the "ae" though. Everything else it does. But I'm sure that's the coding fix.
