When I Was A Kid
I learned the opening from a family friend when I was about 10 years old. He was a teenager, and he was kind enough to keep repeating it to me while I wrote it down so I'd remember, then he was slightly annoyed that I'd managed to memorize it through his repetition while I was writing. Sadly he died of leukemia a few years later but Bruce, if you're looking down on this ONT, I still remember, all these years later. Speaking of being a kid, I was digging through some old, old, OLD files this week, and I came across this "dream house" that I designed when I was, I dunno, maybe 10-12. Couple of thoughts after the blueprint.

2) That kitchen is WAY too small. Punch it out into the room labeled "dining room" and make the unlabeled space to the right the DR.
3) Library. Way cool. Hardwood paneling, a place to sit in my smoking jacket, sipping a tawny port while puffing a pipe and admiring my scantily clad wife basking in the warmth from the fireplace on the bearskin rug.
4) Not nearly enough bathrooms. And was I thinking of the long skinny bedroom as the master? At least I remembered closets. Wife is mad they're not walk-ins, but that's easy enough to fix.
5) Having an underground pool and pretty much all of the entertainment spaces be underground is way cool, although humidity and mold would be a problem.
6) I think I envisioned having a glass ceiling like the Louvre for the underground areas. Again, that would be way cool.
7) I have no idea what the nested circles in the bottom right are supposed to represent, but I suspect it might have been a 70s style floating fireplace.
9) There's not nearly enough storage space. And where is the garage?
10) I guarantee you the rec room would have been full of cabinet video games. As the Lord intended.
11) Anyone want to lend me hundreds of thousands of dollars to make this vision of Utopia a reality? So, what are some things you had/did/made as a kid that still seem cool today?

This is why I push back hard when someone repeats Fudd lore like, "People shot with a .45 tend to stay down." You need to be mentally prepared for a battle for your life and stay in the fight all the way through. If you hit your target and are shocked your .45 doesn't instantly put the goblin down, you might be distracted and discouraged.
Put rounds in the t zone, center mass, and shoot until the threat is stopped.

I'm borderline there myself, similar to how I think everyone should be required to ride a moped for three months, then a motorcyle for six months, and THEN they can sit for a car driver's license (that is more than "can you parallel park and write a check, but that's another discussion).
I'd be receptive to something like "your home is required to have at least one semi auto .22 rifle in good working order at a minimum. You don't have to shoot anyone who is trying to rape you or your wife if you don't want to. That's your business. But, per your constitutional duties as an American, you are required to own a rifle if you are an able bodied man or woman."

National "shall issue"? If not, why not? Or why the hell not? I suppose I should read the decision, and the Alito thing everyone's swooning over, though I am not much moved by somebody pointing out that what passes for "jurisprudence" in much of the judiciary's work is just laughable nonsense. I know that already.
And if they actually said the equivalent of "hey guys, Heller is an actual ruling, remember? Need to adhere to it", then wouldn't many many ridiculous laws fall, not just the ones similar to the NY one?

From 1980-1996ish the Republicans did things their voters wanted. They didn't always win, they weren't always smart in how they fought, and sometimes they were rank cowards but you could regularly see real political fights.
By 2000 though all that went away. Even with Republicans nominally controlling all three branches of government things only went in one direction...left.
I've said this before, but I think a core part of it is Dennis Hastert. The most powerful Republican in DC was known to be a pedo by the left, and they decided to NOT go public with it. There is only explanation for that.

A full grown male grizzly bear can keep running 600 yards after being shot in the heart. Penetrating his skull is damned near impossible. Bear spray often brings them up short, long enough for you to beat a retreat.

Yes, take off their clothes if they are wet, as you are wasting energy trying to warm the person if the clothes are wet - but that's true even if you're warming the victim in front of a nice roaring campfire or desperately cuddling a large, hairy, naked man to survive.

When I first started reading about the Lewis and Clark expedition, one of the most fascinating bits to me was an encounter they had with a grizzly on the upper Missouri. Shot it six times, almost point-blank, and only succeeded in making it mad. Jumped into the river after one of the men, and would have gotten him if someone else hadn't gotten a very lucky shot straight through the head.

I do very much think that enough doubt was sown in 2020 that they can contest any loss and people will be receptive to their complaints because they managed to get Republicans to make the (very valid) case that elections were rigged. JUMPING INTO WATER FROM A TALL HEIGHT CAN BE DEADLY
We routinely jumped from much greater heights than 25 feet that the link mentions when swimming in rock quarries as a youth.
I once jumped about 50-60 feet off of a dam, which was the only incident resulting in trauma.

The bit about getting out of a car submerging... not really what the advice is. It's only if you're already submerged that you wait for the water to get into the car. Also, it's not just a piece of advice - you WON'T BE ABLE TO get the car doors open in all likelihood if you're submerged.
The best piece of advice on that whole thing is to 1) never drive your car into the lake, and 2) get out early, and 3) carry one of those window shattering punches.

I've had a copy since high school. Haven't read it in a while, but it's pretty good; focuses primarily on Lewis as a person, before, during and after the expedition. Clark gets some attention, but it's more a Lewis biography/expedition history. Very well-written, though.

He goes on to describe how he raised his rifle to shoot it, but simultaneously recalled he hadn't reloaded it from a shot he'd taken earlier. In those days, they were single shot rifles, and were laboriously slow to reload, took about 15 seconds if you had everything ready.
So he took off running, and probably still holds a land speed record for a cracker from Virginia. Yeah, he ended up jumping in the river. "I told myself afterward I would never again allow my rifle to be uncharged again except for the time it took to reload her". Oops!
Lewis also fell off a cliff early on, barely saved himself. Another guide shot him in the ass, thinking he was an Elk. He had a rough time of it, I think.

Doing a blog post on the patriotic hymn America (you probably know it as “My Country, ’Tis of Thee”—its title appears nowhere in the lyrics) and when I saw that it refers to “fathers” I thought, I wonder if anyone’s tried to bowdlerize it?
Seemed unlikely, but I went to Hymnary.org and used its side-by-side comparison with some of the modern hymnals, and the only one I found that changed the lyrics did so in a very odd way. It kept the first one, “Land where my fathers died”, but changed “Our fathers’ God to thee” to “Our sovereign God to thee”.
A quick Internet search indicates the lyrics have found their way into only a handful of Baptist churches.

I'm ambivalent about abortion so not terribly concerned about the likely Roe reversal beyond its potential for ultraviolence in and around the donkey barns and my general tendency to favor letting the states decide this sort of thing. But it's nice to see Mr. Overton bouncing back a bit, and also very telling that so many self-styled leaders of American conservative thought are now denigrating their own ostensibly deeply-held causes because someone not of their clique had the gall to drive tangible action on said causes. The breakup of the two-party system can't happen soon enough.

People handle disappointment by assuming the worst that has happened is an appropriate trend and extrapolate that into the future. They react to failures to predict negative outcomes much more severely than positive ones and as a result, will settle into more and more negative views. It's like applying game theory to your own perception and awareness of your surroundings.
"Ok self, I trusted you to perceive the state of things correctly but you lied and it was much worse so now I'm going adopt more negative views regardless of any rational analysis of my environment because I don't trust my awareness anymore."
I imagine this is often a winning strategy for survival. But it eats at our souls.

We were talking to our neighbor today, which we don't often do. He's going through a very unpleasant divorce, his ex is a vindictive bitch, he can't see his children and his lawyer is useless. He's a young, hardworking Hispanic guy who had all his tools and vehicles taken away and now has to work two jobs to earn support and try to rebuild.

There are 3 or 4 outstanding websites that have the daily journal, photographs, historical info and lits of equipment, pictures of the keelboat.
Hollywood just shows some guys in canoes with fur trappers. It wasn't like that. A 60 foot Keelboat. About 30,000 pounds of equipment and food. Maybe 3 tractor trailer loads worth.

Almost every driver I see makes left turns like they are hugging an invisible sharp-cornered curb. I don't get it. I cut the corners as much as possible - it is a shorter distance and I can maintain a higher speed on that wider-radius curve. It only saves a drop of gas and a second or so - but that all adds up over time.

The base predicate is the right to own arms is beyond the reach of government. Period. With that in mind, the right to of the citizens to form a militia does not come from being formed and then controlled by the by government, rather it is a logical outcome of the citizens banding together to defend their God given inalienable rights when the government or invaders start acting like totalitarian assholes. The Left never gets this because they begin with the predicate is there are no rights, just privileges doled out or pulled back by a government. This is something I believe is the historical context here and is something the Founding Fathers clearly understood from first hand experience.

Yes he did. A sixteen foot bench on one wall with a radial arm saw centered on one eight foot section and the lathe on the other. He also made a built-in router table near one end of the saw bench. Also had a drill press. There wasn't too much he couldn't build.

Lewis and Clark National Historic Park in Astoria OR has a replica, as I recall. It's a decent visit, with muzzleloading presentation, period-ish fort/log cabin site, etc., except for the They Stole Our Land NA video presentation.
Got my oldest a flint and steel there to practice his fire-making skills .

When I was about 5-6 and my sister was 9, we soaked the cement bathroom floor and soaped it (bar soap) and then skated with bare feet. Unfortunately I knocked the water bucket over and a lot of water seeped under the door onto the living room floor, which had been polished by hand by my Mum on her knees. Mess! My Mum returned from shopping to that mess. Many imprecations (in Italian) and beatings ensued. We laughed for years over that.

The thing about Biden that many overlook is that before this presidentin' gig he never *had* to be smart, or appear so. He just had to show up in the occasional Senate photo as a reminder of his continued existence while doing dirty deals with the corporate frenz in the notorious corpo tax haven that is Delaware.
All that time in DC and I struggle to think of even a single piece of major legislation that he took the lead on. Even Donkey-Chompers has a better track record, and in just a couple of years.

When I was in college many many moons ago, I spent an evening (no judging) in the boy's dorm on the 8th floor. They decided at about 10pm to plug the bathroom drains and flood the hallways (all the rooms stuck towels under their doors to block the water) and bodysurf. It was a blast to listen to.

Thanks! The five +percent raise is company wide because they did some kind of study and figured out their pay didn't have parity with other companies in the same field and they were having turnover problems because of the salary disparity. This will bring them more in line with the competition.

Heh. Here in the Northern AZ rural town of Prescott, we have a neighbor who opened a succesful Italian restuarant about 3 years ago called Limoncello's. We finally visited it for dinner, and it was very good -- and learned that the Limoncello drink alone is a "digestif" (to be served after dinner) as opposed to an apertif (to be served before dinner).

I'm an independent (medical courier) federal contractor and the company I work for had to institute a 5 cent/mile stipend after gas went over $4/gallon as people started quitting. I'm now paying close to 150% more (out of my own pocket) for gas, and the stipend only covers half of that.
Once gas goes to $10.00 gallon, if the company doesn't increase the stipend, they'll have no drivers -- including me.

I think you may be conflating WWII and Korean War Jeeps. The two common Jeeps of WWII were the MB, made by Willys, and the GPW, made by Ford. The GPWs were basically Ford-built copies of the Willys, but had lots of Ford-branded parts on them, and there were some detail differences in how they were built. Both had fixed tailgates, IIRC.
By the Korean era, Ford had gotten out of the Jeep business, and Willys was the sole supplier. They had begun building CJ's (civilian Jeeps) in 1946, and the Korean War Jeeps had many of the CJ features, like a hinged tailgate, IIRC. They were M38's, and then the M38A1 came along, with an F-head engine, necessitating a taller hood. And they had 24 volt electrics, IIRC.

My mom makes homemade limoncello that is delicious. This year she decided to make orangcello with cara cara oranges that was even better.
If I can get my Meyer lemon to put out enough lemons this year (the fluctuating temps have taken a toll on it) I would love to make a batch of limoncello from it. Nature will let me know if it cooperates.

High school water polo team played our last month or so at the pool where the "graduation" scene in Top Gun was shot. Secret factor - unheated. We beat two superior visiting teams thanks to the cold, and made the county playoffs (where we were crushed). Pool's still there, haven't been inside but last time drove by there was some change to the exterior.

Lovely! My Meyer is in a container because we live in a colder zone so she goes in a greenhouse in the winter. This past winter we were trying to figure out how to regulate the temp so we had no fruit. She bloomed a few times in the past two months, but then we had a few nights that went below 50 so she dropped most of her fruit. I'm hoping that she'll bloom again...right now she has one mature fruit she held plus a bunch of babies that are questionable. It's been a tough year!

It was really, really good. If you have access to Cara Cara oranges next spring, buy a bag and make it. I believe she used a limoncello recipe and just subbed in the oranges. Maybe a touch less sugar?

Once met a few German tourists who had a good idea - they were touring the San Diego area for the first time, and they were going to every Top Gun exterior location. Excellent way to see a lot of the nicer areas, good idea.
Best one - since least known/promoted but really one of the nicest spots - is the tip of Pt. Loma, the Coast Guard property which in the film is the home of the senior officer who reveals Maverick's dad's Vietnam story to him. Of course no nasal radiator ever lived there (nobody actually lives there, I don't think), but good location choice.

And that is just plain ridiculous, since tsunamis are the result of earthquakes, which are themselves driven by plate tectonics, which are not a function of climate. Indeed, climate is affected by plate tectonics, since circulation of ocean currents is controlled by where the land masses are.

The NY Gov and the NY Mayor were howling about protecting "sensitive areas" and I don't think they were discussing their private parts. That will be the thrust of the legislative moves leaving the question what is a "sensitive area." I am guessing everything in the state will be a "sensitive area" excepting the drug dealer street corners and their trap houses. In other words business as usual which is why the Federal Judge will be useful and necessary.

At a 2006 Kim duToit "Shooting Fiesta" in Ennis, TX, I shot my fastest ever split time with a Colt 1991 A1 Commander. Two shots, center mass, "figure 8" overlap.
Split time. 0.11 seconds. My fastest, normal splits are in the 0.2x ranges. The Rangemaster had to read the screens on his PACT timer, just to even believe that I'd fired TWO shots, that sounded as one. Even to me. This is when a well tuned 1911 shows what it can do vs. the striker-fired gang. There's NO WAY a Glock trigger, even with all the Apex trickery, resets for a 0.11 split time. 2/3 of a Mozambique, to be sure. But a definitive 2/3, at that!

This was probably 1952-4. The company building the Owen Falls dam at Jinja, built the school for all the White kids there, as there was no facility otherwise. Lots of Black schools were available but not in English. Middle and high schoolers could go to schools in Kenya, as I did later.

As for the house layout, I liked that too. I designed a 2 or 3 story home for one of my fictional detectives when I was about 14. If they had written, "With worsening climate change brought on by man's activities . . ." I'd have dumped it too.

That's why I use ground pork and season it up myself. Some onion, garlic, paprika, tomato paste, cilantro. Pretty basic but still I use plain ground pork as a starter.

For some time, I've been aware I have Seasonal Affective Disorder in reverse of most people. Hot weather, especially the humid type, and knowing it will last here for 8 months, depresses the hell out of me. People understand the cold weather SAD, but not the hot weather. Yet I believe it is a real thing.

Not "still" in my case. Stirling the little black kitten vaulted onto the bed and refused to leave until he'd nuzzled and kneaded me sufficiently. That was about 2 am. It's okay, I'm calling in sick again today, so I can nap this afternoon.

For some time, I've been aware I have Seasonal Affective Disorder in reverse of most people. Hot weather, especially the humid type, and knowing it will last here for 8 months, depresses the hell out of me. People understand the cold weather SAD, but not the hot weather. Yet I believe it is a real thing.

I spent about 14 years in Durban and it's like Miami.
The winters are great. A/C is now in most shops but not so much in homes. Also most cars had no A/C. Take a shower but good luck getting dried off.

I looked it up. There are some insectivores with toxic saliva, and some slow lorises too. But mammals are generally able to kill more quickly with teeth and claws and don't need venom, which takes some time to work.
