Lyin' Biden Proposes Suspending the Federal Gas Tax, and Urges States to Cut State Gas Taxes, But Proposes Nothing to Increase Supply; Claims He's Producing More Oil Than Trump, and Claims Only the War in Ukraine Has Caused Increase in Gas Prices

He's calling for suspending the federal gas tax, and demanding that states cut the gas tax too, or "find some other ways to deliver some relief."

Um, if they cut the gas tax, they'll just have to raise other taxes. States cannot run deficits. So what you mean, Joe, is that you want states to hide the true price of gas by cutting the gas tax while increasing taxes on things other than gas.

He doesn't explain how we can both cut the federal gas tax and also pay for the road and bridge construction and repair that the federal gas tax pays for. He just insists, senilely, "we can do both."

His call for a cut in the federal gas tax is being mocked even on CNN, where even the egregiously partisan propagandist John Harwood admits it will do nothing to "fix supply." He notes that Obama called the call for a federal gas tax suspension a "gimmick" in 2008. When Lyin' Biden was his vice presidential running mate, of course, under Jibracky.

Another analyst on CNN says Moody's calls a suspension of the gas tax inflationary," and would of course reduces money for infrastructure, which the federal gas tax funds. Which would be strange given that we're supposedly all about fixing roads and bridges right now.

He also notes that sellers of gasoline would not necessarily pass the full savings of the cut in the gas tax to consumers. They could just pocket some of the windfall themselves, therefore blunting the hoped-for relief for consumers.

The same analyst notes that this artificially, gimmicky reduction in price will boosts demand, which is the last thing we want when supply is low and demand is high. By slightly reducing prices, it will actually increase demand, which will then drive prices right back up to where they were before the gas tax suspension gimmick.

What Biden needs to do, of course, is increase supply. This is so obvious that even CNN sees it.

But he won't do that, because he considers his work in stunting US oil production an achievement he wants to make permanent. He's willing to dick around with releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and suspending the gas tax to provide the illusion of short term price relief, but he wants to keep the cap on US production permanent.

Because it's part of the "incredible transition" to solar and wind power the Democrats continue fantasizing about:

He claims the US is producing more oil now, "on average," than it did under Trump.

Note he says "on average," not "at peak."

That's because the worldwide covid shutdown and attendant crash in demand for oil caused, naturally, a sharp fall in the production of oil. So Trump's oil production, which had hit all-time records, then slowed down starting in December 2019 -- lowering his "average" oil production.

The claim from Democrats that domestic production is higher now than during the Trump administration is based on a comparison of four-year averages that includes the tremendous drop in economic activity at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic oil production under Biden has yet to come close to the pre-pandemic levels reached under the prior administration, a more detailed Free Beacon analysis found.

oilproduction.png

The Free Beacon analysis of domestic crude oil production data shows that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States produced just under 13 million barrels of oil per day at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020. For comparison, that figure is more than 20 percent higher than the amount of oil the United States produced per day in September 2021. Energy industry expert James Wilson, who runs an oil and gas economics consulting firm, says the White House is abusing statistics to fit a narrative.

Biden has essentially capped energy production at the levels they were at during the lockdown -- and he's surprised that post-lockdown, demand has increased and prices have necessarily soared.

As MRCTV asks: Where are the leftwing propaganda media fact-checkers?

Even the leftwing propagandist Jonathan Karl is forced to confess that that isn't quite accurate:

And the head of the Federal Reserve Bank just contradicted Biden on this claim:

RNC Research
@RNCResearch

Q: "Would you say that the war in Ukraine is the primary driver of inflation in America?"

Fed Chair Powell: "No. Inflation was high before, certainly before the war in Ukraine broke out."

The man is simply an inveterate, conscienceless liar and has been his entire life.

Men who shower with their young daughters have a lot of practice lying.

6 I'm kind of wondering if cutting the gas tax tax gets american consumers "addicted" to having that tax cut permanently. All that shit goes to nonsense like "light rail" instead of road projects.

Of course, it will just be temporary until the last vote is counted in November.

23 In a nutshell - a federal gas tax "holiday" reduces government revenue, but doesn't reduce any spending. Therefore, money creation increases to make up the difference, and inflation soars even more. Increased inflation drives the price of gasoline up even higher than it was before. So, a federal gas tax holiday will make gasoline cost even more than it did without the tax holiday. That is why it's idiotic.

And as to supply, notice he isn't talking about eliminating exports, especially of refined products, to help insulate the United States to some degree from global market developments while we are running in a production deficit? This would do wonders for diesel right out of the gate.

56 While I always like the idea of ending taxation (especially the egregious gas tax), this just strikes me as a bad idea.

I mean it would significantly reduce gas prices while in effect, but... it has a couple of problems.

1) when it ends, the gas prices would skyrocket because they are pretty high per gallon. Like 25 cents per gallon federal only. In California, the gas tax is 51 cents a gallon.
2) Part of the reason we have inflation right now is government spending without any revenue to cover it. Removing a source of revenue that adds up to billions every year seems... unwise

I thought we were also all about building infrastructure to handle all the charging stations for all the EVs that everyone is supposed to be using now.

So much for Biden's idiot Energy Secretary Jenny Granholm stating "the only way out... is diversifying our fuel sources by deploying clean energy." Can't exactly "deploy clean energy" when there is zero money to actually build the infrastructure for the "clean energy".

The fact Biden is monkeying with federal leases shows you they know that. As does the regulatory assault on refiners and producers. They have also tried to make the industry a no-go zone for the financial services and investment industry. It is therefore harder and more expensive to operate.

They know exactly what they are doing and how to fix it. They don't want to and this IS the plan.

130 I don't think the high gas prices are just from higher oil price.

There are 5 less refineries in 2022 than there were in 2020. I think that number is really 6 because 1 refinery shut down and became a bio-diesel plant with a much lower capacity.

But looking at production numbers (EIA) was are still trailing 2020. So yeah, oil has gone up, but product prices were lower in the past at this same crude price.

I think we have a refinery bottle neck.

143 Something is hinky with oil prices. Oil was stable at about 75 a barrel during the Covid shutdown, but is not at about $105. Looking at actual numbers on the supply AND demand side... this increase really makes little sense.
Posted by: Romeo13 at June 22, 2022 04:10 PM (oHd/0)

what I find when looking at the world supply and demand side is that world oil production is roughly 98.1 million bopd, whereas world oil demand as the world rebounds from the shutdown is pushing past 100 million bopd. That kind of mismatch, with demand significantly outstripping supply, always pushes prices much higher, and will continue to do so.

I don't think they have the same degree of vertical mobility in their societies that we have here in America (at least until recently). Their societies are largely set up to steer you to your defined path from an early age. If you come from wealth and privilege, that's where you belong. If you don't, then there's not too many ways to advance to the upper tiers of society.

210 The 18 cents in fed gas tax.

Assume demand for gas remains constant after this reduction (assume, though not plausible).

Also, this 18 cent savings would then be spent on something else. Thereby, creating more demand for item X (whatever item X is).

Thus, item X rises in price because of the demand, thereby increasing inflation.

The only way this does not impact inflation is if the 18 cents saved (bank, under mattress, whatever). Therefore, the claim of "getting a little breathing space" and not increase inflation , means consumer is still in the same boat because the 18 cents isn't used for gas nor spent on anything leaving consumer the same amount of money at their disposal.

The Rs should call this out along with the "more production" canard.

>>Something is hinky with oil prices.
Not really, Oil prices are set by supply and demand, "the market", OPEC, Governmental Policy and FUD.

Today oil is 105 a barrel, it was as high as 120 a barrel two weeks ago.
So that means that two weeks ago it was 2.85 a gallon and this week it's 2.50 a gallon.

Which has been reflected in retail gas prices inching down a couple of cents.

In order to get back to any semblance of normalacy, a barrel of oil needs to be 50-55bucks.
I don't see that happening anytime soon with the Junta in charge.

243 It took 150 years to build our oil based infrastructure. And there were far fewer government regulations to deal with when it was built.

But, yeah, just wave that magic wand and create unlimited electricity and cheap electric cars that have the range of an ICE engine.

The people in charge are idiots.

ps. The physics of electricity seem to be a stone cold bitch and getting anything approaching the range of an ICE engine just may not be possible.

248 Ha! The reason Europeans could have "free" health care was because Uncle Sam was providing the NATO defense umbrella, a gazillion B52 sorties around the clock, nuclear booker subs, and providing all the security for them. They didn't have to spend any money on national defense comparatively speaking.

Today it's even worse. They took all the NATO money and bought Russian natural gas with it, effectively. LOL

Now they are cutoff from Russian natural gas, and are trying to figure out how to bring Coal plants back online. I knew 20 years ago shitcanning coal and Nuclear was going to bite 'em in the ass.

When that wack job shot up Ft. Hood a general said "I hope this doesn't interfere with our commitment to diversity". Pretty queer thing to say if you think about it.

265 Quick story about European standard of living.

During my corporate career traveling back in the 90s I ended up being friends with a guy who was a doctor in Germany. Nice guy, married a very hot French girl, and was a high-end doctor career field-wise.

Sometime around 2003, he and his family took a trip to the states and swung by our place for a couple of days. I caught him outside at one point looking at our two cars, my Jeep, couple of four wheelers, a bass boat, and all the land we owned. Bear in mind this guy knew what I did for a living and realized that he was in a field several notches above mine. But he was absolutely dumbfounded at our standard of living.

I made a point of taking him by some places around my county where the real good ol boys live and showed him all the toys they had.

Not sure how he dealt with that but he never brought it up again.

281 Generally speaking when people do COL comparisons between Europe and the USA they do it almost entirely on stuff like "cost for medical care" and "access to local boutique food" both of which are kind of irrelevant to the actual standard of living for most of humanity. When you need medical care, its incredibly important, but for most of your life for most of humanity, you don't need it. So while thats important, it has to be ranked pretty low overall compared to things like safety, freedom, access to housing, etc.

Then, when they go all in on Alaska, some of the other western states start getting froggy. The feds don't have the resources to deal with all of them at once.

320 How about this: states reclaim under eminent domain all the lands within their borders that are currently under federal management, and each state can decide on its own who gets to exploit its natural resources.

I like this plan. I'd be glad to be a part of it. Absolutely zero in the US Constitution permits the federal government to seize and declare off limits lands in states.

Mind you I love national parks and love the idea of preserving especially beautiful areas. Just... do it legally

Aside from national parks and abuses of such, I think most of it is land not divested in the creation of the state rather than seized stuff. But sure, I don't think there's a downside to forcing the issue. Sooner is better.

Except that federal spending is effectively decoupled from collecting tax revenue.

You mistake my intent. The government does NOT need the money from taxes, at least in the short term. As you point out it just prints the money.

The problem with a tax amnesty is that the left/GOPe can't oppress people with taxes and those people will start getting used to it...both very dangerous for the left/GOPe.

Imagine, if you will, a scenario where Trump sent the IRS home in 2017 and told people they would not need to pay taxes, and the GOPe refused to give him the wall.

Come the 2018 elections how are candidates demanding the taxes be re-instated going to do versus those demanding they don't come back?

I mean semis are big enough they probably could build a train-style electric diesel affair, but that still uses gas. As do trains. Its just not a viable choice to replace EVERYTHING with electrical, even if we had the power generation and delivery structure in place, which we're far from.

National Parks aren't really the problem, they have to be created by an act of Congress, and Congress is too pussified and lazy to do it for a controversial piece of land.

But National Monuments can be created by Executive order, which is how Chocolate Fonzie prevented a huge amount of possible oil exploration (not to mention other resource extraction).

There was a perfectly good word what you're describing, and it works as well today as it did back when it was invented: conservationism. They generally seek to conserve the environment, not destroy it recklessly or pointlessly, maintain natural resources effectively and preserve important and spectacular features (e.g., national parks - one of the main productions of the conservationists) while understanding that property rights are a thing and so is the economy.

Environmentalists have nothing in common with conservationists.

Since the loss of revenue would be made up for by printing, yes, it would contribute to inflation.

The only reason US Inflation has been so low in the last so many years is that it is created by issuing loans to consumers, who then have to earn the money and create the wealth to confirm its value. If the rate is too low and it is created to quickly, or if people go broke, bankrupt or die without assets to pay back, then the money is "created without proof of work" and creates inflation

467 They are already doing it here. Some big wind farm outfit is gong around trying to get people to sign 20 year leases so they can build windmills in eastern Fannin County Texas. So far two "environmental" groups have been pushing people to not sign the lease because it would mess up bird migration routes.

I'll agree to an AT&T tower on my land, but no wind farm.

Posted by: rickb223 TEXIT at June 22, 2022 04:57 PM

You could sure use a cell tower up there, might get people's phones to actually work if they put one on your place. Windmills are the big thing now. Honey Grove and east they are pushing hard to get people to sign 20 year leases for those things and there is tremendous opposition.

563 I live at a crossroads of a couple of continental-grade bird migration routes. We get a lot of tourist revenue from birdwatchers (more these days than from waterfowl hunters, I have to admit, but they're both in there). This area does not get appreciable tourist business for any other reason, so when the oddball birding types speak up against lines of bird-mulchers in Lake Erie, so far they've been listened to.

The argument has been going on for over 20 years. It's astounding to hear big ol' hippie folksinger types suddenly come out in favor of losing a mere few million birds a year because it's the new progressive thing. That's the kind of power the Party wields.

658 Biden is to pull the old clinton trick of acting like he's doing something, knowing it'll screw the next guy. Biden knows he's not winning a second term and that Republicans will take both houses Chinese January, so he'll get rid of the gas tax so that the next budget has to increase other taxes, at which point they'll bring back the gas tax (since Republicans won't cut anything for fear Democrats may say mean things about them)

We're at the point where he's just going to flail and point fingers until he's out of office, further hurting everyone in the country.

With respect, those are titles, not pronouns. Your 3d person singular options in standard English:
Nominative (subject) case: she, he, it
Objective case: her, him, it
Possessive case: her, hers; his, his; its, its.
Reflexive/intensifying case: add -self to the objective case.

A single person cannot be plural, so they, them, their. or theirs is not an option.

The only extent to which I am willing to compromise is accepting a person's request that I use "it" when referring to him or her in writing.
