199 Lately I've been posting on the Daily Tech Thread some prayers by Rev. Matthew Henry-the English Presbyterian dissenting clergyman (the Anglicans at the time stamped down on anyone who wasn't Anglican) who was born in the late 1600's in England and died in the mid 1700s. He was a pastor and also has some well known- to people who appreciate this sort of thing- Biblical commentary. All of his prayers are based on selections from the KJV of the Bible. A poster here asked me to post a link for the site for Matthew Henry's prayers. Up at the top right there is a link for "Read now" You can find Henry's patterns for prayers as well as occasional addresses and short prayers. I think his prayers are stirring and heartfelt and of course Biblically focused:

IF it is done by act of Congress, then it is a bill of attainder, which Congress 'shall not pass' (not shall not pass except on foreigners we don't like).

We have gone so far as to seize Ships and Planes in neutral countries.... which destroys due process, and Property Rights.

Whole thing is setting a really destabilizing precedent IMO.

I met a man from El Salvador that had Polio. This poor man was barely functional. One leg was inches shorter than the other. So the poor guy couldn't do physical labor OR mental labor jobs. He also couldn't be comfortable lying down, seated, or standing.

Tuckerman's Ravine is on Mt. Washington and could account for a good number of the deaths. Tucks has claimed about 250 skiers. Not for beginners - super steep. When you're hiking up the trail (no lifts) the boots of the guy in front of you will kick you in the face if you're too close. If you were to stand sideways with hands on hips, your elbow would be buried in the snow.

It is, however, a blast to ski.

301 > I'm hearing the new Federal Red Flag law include due process and severe penalties' for bringing false accusations. Still unconstitutional but, perhaps not a bad thing for states that have Rad Flag laws on the books without due process and no penalties.

The "due process" is that a judge is involved, and you have a right to pay out of pocket to fight it after you've lost your right to self defense.

Judges WILL be rubber stamping red flag petitions, because there's no blowback for being wrong.

Also, the law does not say there are severe penalties for false reporting. It just stipulates there will be a penalty, which is left up to the states. A state could fine false red flag petitioners a dollar and be in compliance.

He's a dumb Good Ole Boy pol with a smalltown LOCAL Chamber of Commerce mentality that simply equates governing success with passing a bill that somehow manages to transfer resources from the center to edge so he can point to the money/resources as his fighting for you.

Like, if the Dems ever wanted to fully nationalize healthcare, Cornyn's vote could probably be bought with a promise to build a brand-new health clinic in every podunk Texas town.

S'true Anna, many Japanese schoolgirls are saying they're not into feminism. They like cute things, they like feminine things, and they like going out with boys, if they can do so. 383 "At some point over the last generation, the ruling class shifted its emphasis from competence to ideological loyalty. Some degree of indoctrination was always a factor, of course, but until recently the idea was to take the smartest recruits you could find, and then make them loyal.
"It doesn’t work that way anymore. Now, entrance into the top schools depends far less on grades, which is to say far less on ability, and more far on ideological purity. The ruling class has prioritized loyalty above all else.

"This shift in priorities compromises the educational system at a very basic level. Classroom instruction is now much less about teaching students how to think and how to do things, and far more concerned with ensuring they become appropriately enthusiastic about what they’re supposed to feel"

It seems to me it would be smarter to release the decision first and concentrate the uproar and hopefully let it burn outat the SC rather than their own front lawns.

"The Assault on Children’s Psyches" by Leo the Sapir at City Journal. tinyurl.com/4t55xadf

He explains the explosion in "rapid onset gender dysphoria" among children as a consequence of CRT -- where white kids can escape being labeled & treated as The Oppressor (since they can't change their skin color) and instead become a courageous transgender hero member of The Oppressed (since they can change their "gender").

My repeated comment: Schools are mutilating our children -- psychologically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and physically.

501 The Chicago Police Department has unveiled a new policy prohibiting its officers from chasing people on foot simply because they run away, or because they have committed minor offenses.

The policy, which was introduced Tuesday, also encourages cops to “consider alternatives” to pursuing someone who “is visibly armed with a firearm.”

Under the policy, officers may give chase if they believe a person is committing or is about to commit a felony, a Class A misdemeanor such as domestic battery, or a serious traffic offense that could risk injuring others, such as drunken driving or street racing.

Perhaps most significantly, the new policy makes clear that the days of officers giving chase just because someone tries to get away from them are over.

“People may avoid contact with a member for many reasons other than involvement in criminal activity,” the policy states.

I found myself in a pub in Cork , Ireland . A group of American tourists came in.
One of the Americans said, in a loud voice, "I hear you Irish think you're great drinkers. I bet $5,000 that no one here can drink 20 pints of Guinness in 30 minutes."
The bar was silent, but the American noticed one Irishman leaving. No one took up the bet.
40 minutes later, the Irishman who left returned and said, "Hey Yank, is yer bet still on?"
"Sure" said the American, "20 pints in 30 minutes for a bet of $5,000 ."
"Grand, " replied the Irishman, "so pour the pints and start the clock."
It was very close but the last drop was consumed with 2 seconds to spare.
"OK Yank, pay up." said the Irishman.
"I'm happy to pay, here's your money" said the American. "But tell me, when I first offered the wager, I saw you leave. Where did you go?'
"Well sir", replied the Irishman, "$5,000 is a lot of money to a man like me, so I went to the pub across the road first to see if I could do it.

672 RUSSIA's "outdated weapons" have proven to be no match for Ukrainian defences as the latest intelligence report from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) shows 55 percent of Russian-backed forces have been wiped out in the Donbas region.

With the focus of the conflict heavily concentrated in the Donbas region in and around the strategic industrial city of Severodonetsk, Ukraine has called on the west to supply extra weapons to defend the territory. Russia has announced it has all but captured the city as heavy shelling continues, however, the cost of the operation has taken its toll on Russian personnel, with many killed or injured in the conflict.

“As of June 16, the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) acknowledged 2128 military personnel killed in action, and 8897 wounded, since the start of 2022.

“The DPR casualty rate is equivalent to around 55 percent of its original force, which highlights the extraordinary attrition Russian and pro-Russian forces are suffering in Donbas..

686 Frank was a harsh but fair man, and those that knew him well respected him for his direct approach to life and the bigger issues.

As the bartender poured six shots of house tequila in front of him, he sat expressionless, his mind seemingly occupied by a far-away thought and the droning of the cricket match on the pub's television on the wall to his left.

The stranger that had challenged Frank, seemed of a sketchier nature. Kurt was not intimidating, and yet all at once, he instilled the desire for one to reach and check to see if their wallet has been lifted when he brushed by.

The crudely applied tattoo on the inside of his left wrist read 'Horde Troll' in blurred, faded letters. His left eye twitched as the barkeep poured his six shots in front of him. He seemed unstable, a touch psychotic, the kind of man that would eat a crunchy taco without tilting his head....

688 ....As the patrons gathered round, each of the men slapped a $100 bill on the table.

Frank grasped the first shot and threw it back unceremoniously, wiping his lips on his sleeve and followed up each the remaining five shots in rapid succession.

Kurt eyed the shots with trepidation, and looked at Frank sheepishly, though Frank had seemingly returned to whatever distant memory he was fixated on prior to his drinking.

As Kurt choked down the fourth shot, his eyes began to glaze over, like the congealed jelly coating a hunk of Spam fresh from the canister. Then as if by force of nature, he passed out dead as his chair fell backwards and his head bounced slightly of the hardwood with what Frank reckoned was a somewhat refreshing thud...

I looked past his ego and foot in mouth during his term and stood by him as the media set out to ruin him day in and out. But I'm done with him now. The sooner we are rid of him the better. He hasn't learned a thing. He still can't even pretend to drop his Trump first mentality. I kind of hope a bill is passed to keep him from being able to run for office again. Maybe that's what it'll take for him to just go away. We have plenty of issues in this party of ours but he's no longer helping. He's doing more harm then good and if the hints of being jealous of DeSantis are true, I don't how anyone can keep supporting him at this point.

709 I lied:

The Pope was very ill, and nobody could cure him.
The cardinals called in an old physician recommended to them. After an hour long examination, he comes up with a solution. “I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The bad news: The Pope has a rare testicular disorder. The good news: He can be cured…..with sex.”
The cardinals, not happy with the cure, explain the situation to the Pope. “I’ll agree to it,” says the Pope.” But under four conditions.”
The cardinals were shocked.” What are the four conditions?” asks one.
“First, the girl must be blind, so she cannot see with whom she is having sex.
Second, she must be deaf, so she cannot hear with whom she is having sex.
And third, she must be dumb, so if she somehow figures out with whom she is having sex,.. she can tell no one.”
After a long pause, a cardinal asks, “And the fourth condition ?”
“Big tits”.

Oh yes. It's the UNIX vs. Linux distinction. I grew up on one, not the other, so I find the other more difficult. It isn't a value statement, just that I know one very well and the other trips me up. And Linux is mostly "standard" now. Until someone decides that systemd was the wrong approach and they make up a new complete system-control concept that requires you to relearn everything under the sun. Again.

I'd expect it's worth a lot, but I don't know how much.

I think there were three key developments that killed Mo Brooks:

1. Trump pulled his endorsement and ridiculously smeared Brooks as "woke" and "a RINO."

2. Durant said just before the primary that if he came in third he'd endorse Brooks. A couple of weeks after the primary, he mysteriously changed his mind and said he would not endorse.

3. Wade Perry, Director of the AL Democratic Party, encouraged an effective Dem crossover vote.

Insanity and stupidity run amok. You wanna know an effective synonym for "single-use plastics?" It's "public health." Single-use plastics keep us clean and healthy by keeping our stuff - especially perishable stuff - clean and healthful (and by keeping other stuff like garbage contained and undistributed until it can be sent to the landfill).

That proto-meme of the garbage truck strewing garbage everywhere as it went down the street isn't a thing anymore because of those dreaded "single-use plastics." My grandmother, who died at 104 in the mid 90s, was once interviewed by the local paper. She said the most important development in her lifetime was the plastic garbage bag.

Enjoy your filth, trash and disease, Canada.

745 Some species of centipedes can be hazardous to humans because of their bite. While a bite to an adult human is usually very painful and may cause severe swelling, chills, fever, and weakness, it is unlikely to be fatal. Bites can be dangerous to small children and those with allergies to bee stings. The venomous bite of larger centipedes can induce anaphylactic shock in such people. Smaller centipedes are generally incapable of piercing human skin.

As a counter, I think desktop linux is fine (after going on about three years with it). For windows software, virtualbox Win 7 is sufficient, except for gaming. If you can get GPU passthrough to work, there is some promise for playing windows games on linux via a virtual machine. But that is still pretty new.

Oh, I know. I use it as my full-time operating system. I live with the compromises, and they extend will beyond gaming. But privacy is a thing and so I live with it. I don't love it and I never have. On the server it's an entirely different story.

Jim, yes, I have actually seen twins by different fathers. When my son was in day care, there were two adopted boys whose mother was a crack addict. The two boys were twins (both white) but definitely not related. The new parents insisted that the boys remain together after adoption. They were great kids who had great parents in their new life.

This set of circumstances are the result of the unforeseen consequences of one of Rush Limbaugh's funniest stunts: Operation Chaos, which was intended to keep Hillary in the primary race against Obama to keep the internecine squabbles going on a little bit longer. Funny at the time, but that one came back to eventually bite us back in the end - bigly.

778 I have trouble with BSD. I'm a Linux guy and using BSD is like going to Ireland. They speak the same language, sort of, except everything is just ... off.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!)

Believe it or not, the BSDs are pretty much 'classic' UNIX. Linux has many good features, but it is nonstandard.
Posted by: WinLinBSDAdmin at June 22, 2022 01:35 PM (Ynn3w)

No, BSD had quite a few differences from original ATT UNIX, besides the license fee - which is why it crept into wider use. This was long before single person computers. I'm not sure where Linux' differences come from - if it branched from ATT linux or just changed things as they built it up to separate it from BSD.

779 Warren v. District of Columbia

The trial judges correctly dismissed both complaints. In a carefully reasoned Memorandum Opinion, Judge Hannon based his decision in No. 79-6 on "the fundamental principle that a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any particular individual citizen."

Posted by: SMOD at June 22, 2022 02:18 PM (RHGPo)

780 Linux seems to most resemble SunOS, which is a spin off from BSD Unix.

BSD bought a UNIX license from AT&T and proceeded to enhance it with new features, most memorial was "virtual memory" mostly on DEC PDP-11, then VAX 11 computers.

781 Bill Cosby shall never be forgiven since on May 17, 2004, at the Constitution Hall, Washington, D. C., at the invitation of the NAACP, he created a storm through the speech he gave.

Its still worth a read & consideration for any community. (Among other sites, it can be found at Speakola dot com.)

Given the gun-control pap and the promise of "immigration reform" do they just roll over and die for lack of inspiration? Seems rather unfriendly but I can understand the disappointment. Sad. Just sayin'.
