How the Voters Really Feel about Abortion
Dave in Fla [Guest Monkey]

Monkey.png

With CBD on vacation, I was asked to fill in for him this week. It happens that I have some new polling information to share with you, so it was a timely request. My favorite pollster, Rich Baris, conducted a new national poll during May. I'm going to share some insights from it on Thursday, but with the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision being released this week, I thought it would be useful to understand what the voters actually think on the abortion issue.

First a word about the poll itself. It is a likely voter poll of over 2500. In polling terms, that is double the size needed for valid results in a national poll. Also, I have mentioned in the past, Baris uses an over sampling technique tied to consumer data to ensure he gets a representative sample from all key demographics. He has been extremely accurate in the past (most accurate in the VA Governor's race for example), so I have high confidence that he is accurately measuring voter sentiment. [I am not including a link to the crosstabs of the poll, since those are provided to his Locals community only]

Consider the following results:

Abortion Polling.JPG

When you consider the top line question, "are you pro-choice or pro-life?", the country will self-identify as barely pro-choice. This is where the Democrats stop the discussion, since they want to make the political claim that the voters are pro-choice, so don't change the current status quo. While a solid super-majority of Republicans are pro-life (much to the chagrin of the GOPe), the over all numbers are driven by an equal super-majority of Democrats and a plurality of Independents who call themselves pro-choice.

Where things get very interesting is when you start looking at the approval/disapproval of specific practices.

Abortion after a heartbeat has been detected has almost majority opposition with the voters, with twice as many independents opposing as approving it.

Abortion after a baby can feel pain is strongly opposed by 60.6% of the voters. Even Democrats oppose the practice by a slight plurality.

Where abortion really loses support is in the 3rd trimester. 70.7% of the voters oppose this practice. Even a solid majority of DEMOCRATS (55.2%) oppose abortion up to the point of birth.

The final data point I want to highlight is how important Roe v Wade is as an election issue. Will it motivate the Democrat base to vote?

No, it will not.

While Democrats are twice as likely to consider abortion to be their primary issue for voting in November, still only 13.2% of Democrats identify it as their most important issue. That small percentage represents slight over 4% of the entire voting population. They might be vocal with their protests and terrorism, and the administration might want to pretend they are a mighty voting bloc, but they are a tiny sliver of the electorate.

If Roe v Wade is repealed this week, it will have no impact on the November elections. And as the public finally realizes what the repeal actually means, they will support the laws that are in place throughout many of the states.

The November elections are going to hinge on the economy, as you will see on Thursday.

26 Abortion was 'invented' to destroy the black race, especially in America.

It has been transitioned into birth control, removing an ultimate consequence for a specific action.

And ironically, a repeal right now (or back when it leaked in the first place) will ensure no federal movement until after the election. They probably don't have the votes to get a federal abortion law passed right now, what with their razor thin margins in the Senate and a couple of red state Dem senators who would probably like to keep their jobs, so they won't invite another high-profile defeat on the same topic during the campain.

Something something about Margaret Sanger. Well the World Wide Web was pretty new. So I researched ole Maggie. And quoted her verbatim, pointing out she was obviously a racist bitch extraordinaire.

I was told that what I really should do, is read a book about Maggie. The author would presumably tell me what she really meant. I protested, and argued that primary source documents - "straight from the horses mouth" ought to be the best method. This is why the Left wants people stupid and ignorant and unable to think for themselves. Information is to be used as a weapon. And only the "gatekeepers" are smart enough to determine what information you can be provided.

It is to laugh. There's a degree of truth to it, but if the situation is as rosy as Yellen implies, then why are revolving credit (that is, credit card) balances skyrocketing and topping out near credit limits? If people have so much liquid cash in the bank, why are they charging purchases and carrying the balance on a variable-rate instrument? Moreover, even if you have a decent cash position, what is your inventive to consume anything but long-life durable goods right now? I could see a pop in those sectors since the value of your money is collapsing so you might as well get while the getting's good - but that does nothing to improve regular consumption or investment. It's just pulled-forward demand to get ahead of the curve on things like refrigerators and laundry appliances.

In law school during an inevitable abortion discussion one student, a very overweight gal with the short hair and problem glasses so you can guess her politics, chimed in with abortion should be legal until "the fetus was crowning." Fetus, of course. There was a couple mumbled comments and some open-mouthed stares, and everyone got kind of silent, even the professor, and we just sort of moved on.

Point being even though the audience was a very liberal group who I'm sure was overwhelmingly "pro-choice", if you go into the details of what that entails these days, support drops off.

The legal case under the Laws of War for the Emancipation Proclamation was that slaves were a vital part of the South's ability to produce war goods. Thus, like in a blockade, war goods can be seized under Presidential authority alone. In areas where the Union controlled, no such legal argument existed.

How recent was that? In about 1974 Philip K. Dick published a short story about a future "Amerika" in which abortion was legal up to 6 years of age. The tale focused on a couple of kids who were coming up on that deadline and were horribly aware of it. I don't recall the title. Now I wonder if he was inspired by the item you mention, if it happened that long ago.

159 The November elections are going to hinge on the economy, as you will see on Thursday. the Democrats' control of every state's voting process and ability to control who counts the votes.

That said, the Democrat control of the nation's voting process may not be able to steal all the Senate and House elections. But they certainly will steal the Presidential election once again in 2024. Considering they have faced zero accountability or punishment for their brazen rigging and steal in 2020 and every single person who perpetrated that crime remains in their positions today.

My interest is in Wretched's re-election results here in Michigan. This state has gone full Karen, especially with the Plandemic policies. 170 FWIW, public surveys regarding abortion have been relatively stagnant for decades moving a bit to the right after fetal imaging became a thing. But, the Democrat activist core has went hard left since the Clinton years defending even abortion after birth as legitimate. My guess is that is from Planned Parenthood's political influence as fetal tissues are much more valuable to sell from late term abortions than early drug induced ones.

219 > Abortion was 'invented' to destroy the black race, especially in America.

True, and black babies are disproportionately the victims of abortion to this day.

If it weren't for abortion, blacks would be 25% of the U.S. population, rather than 12%.

What's that word for when you wipe out 50% of an ethnicity? Oh, yeah: "genocide". That's it.

In most of Europe (you know, that place that leftists like so much) abortion is legal in the first trimester, but very heavily restricted in later ones. You can get a pretty good rise out of a commie by suggesting that we should adopt European norms on when abortion is acceptable, then pointing out exactly what those norms are.

I believe the Netherlands is the only country in Western Europe that allows abortion up until birth. But then, they also allow murdering old people.

That's because they know it will come down that The Bills of Rights doesn't allow states to arbitrarily dispense those rights. So NY will try to subvert that decision and in the process usurp people's rights. That sets up a very bad conflict where the state has become an authoritarian and willfully disregards the law, then is backed by a corrupt partisan state judiciary. I can think of few other things that will cause such a volatile conflict.

Watch the movie for the social hierarchy. A small uncaring upper crust using people. She's the Furniture that comes with the Apartment.

Another section of people desperately holding on to the little privileges and luxuries they have; like the Cop played by Heston.

And a whole mass of humanity that own nothing, care about nothing, and they like it.

The exception here is the fabulously rich but their conspicuous consumption is not enough to move the needle.

The big reason it's been such a huge thing at the federal level for so long is specifically because it was a SCOTUS created law. There was no way to directly address the issue through statute. It was just the ever-present fight of "vote Republican to get justices who might overturn Roe if they get the right case."

Moving it back to the states will completely reframe the fight. It will simply stop being a federal issue. It will move the fights to the state level. This doesn't negate the fight, but it moves it into a forum that won't get the same kind of activist and media attention.

Oh, that idea comes from his Des Moines speech. He mentioned three groups who were agitating for the US to get into the war, the British, American Jews, and the FDR admin. If you read the speech, he doesn't say anything anti-semitic. He points out their prosecution by Germany. He highlights that they have legitimate reasons for wanting the US to intervene. He simply states that their interests and reasons do not override the national interest to stay out of the war.

Korea posed problems, too. The empire was being built in China and Korea and Manchuria, while the Navy was out gathering resources. Japan's only move would have been a negotiated peace, which they could have gotten at the time. We and the USSR would probably have accepted permanent integration of Korea and Manchuria in exchange for a withdrawal from greater China and no further Pacific expansion.

But they viewed it as an all-or-nothing issue (and I can even sort of understand why, given their motivations) and so took the road they took.

I've gakmed the Battle of idway for decades. Very hard for the US to win.

In the real event, it hinged on an Auxiliaries Officer on the IJN CA Tone. He and his division could not get a catapult to work for a while. This one catapult was to launch the critical scout plane.

If the US fleet had been spotted by that scout plane earlier (if it launched on time), we would have lost, and lost big.

We used to have robust election cheating in US elections in both rural and urban districts--it faded away in many rural areas but was constricted by laws from 1900-1920 in urban areas. Those are the laws being ignored or subverted by urban areas today.

They liked Hitler well enough, even though he was in charge of a degenerate form of socialism, until he committed the unforgivable sin of making war against the ideal.

Bull Shit! The progressives obeyed the directives of the Soviet COMINTERN and became full bore Nazi Apologists after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-Aggression Act was signed in August 1939. August 1939, and then the war started in September 1939 when the Nazis and Soviets carved up Poland. Russia later attacked Finland and the Baltics for their "Lebensraum."

The Progressives were proudly Pro-Peace and Pro-Nazi Occupation right up until Hitler attacked Stalin's Soviet Russia. Then they overnight became Anti-Nazi.

421 Why is this concept called "federalism" when it downplays the role of the Federal government and emphasizes the role of the states?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 21, 2022 12:05 PM (txdEq)

Because it re-emphasizes the concept of a confederation of supreme states. Not just a single block nation.

The opposite of "federalism" is "nationalism". It was that way when the progs started nationalizing everything in the 19th century.

By calling the central government "federal" we've reinforced the idea that it is only presiding over the coordination of a set of sovereign states.

437 Modest proposal:

We know that abortions are safe and effective for everyone 6 months of age or older. We also now know that men can be birthing people.

Therefore abortions should be mandatory for all, and proof of abortion -- in the form of a QR code tattoo applied on the forearm following the procedure -- should be required for entry to all dining and entertainment establishments, and to fly on airplanes, and to buy groceries, and to attend school, and to get a job.

Your decision to have a child can have catastrophic ramifications for our entire society. Every mass shooter, every rapist, every Republican all have one thing in common -- they were all born. Abortion is therefore a moral imperative, and anyone who refuses is a selfish monster.

441 413 Why is this concept called "federalism" when it downplays the role of the Federal government and emphasizes the role of the states?

----------------------
Federalism is a shortened version of Confederalism. Not used much anymore because you know, the Confederacy. The Framers used it to describe the new compound republic of states and a national government. The Anti-Federalists who were in fact confederalists favored only minor tweaks to the existing Articles of Confederation and keeping the role of the national government totally separate from that of the states. In order to warrant change, those pushing the new Constitution resorted to terming their government federal--with the national government having supreme enumerated powers only and the states retaining the rest. Confederalists aka Anti Federalists argued that the new Constitution would inevitably become the federal government over all and devolve into a central government (some argued even a tyranny on par with European governments).

Nationalism is about Prussians and Bavarians being Germans or Genoese and Venetians being Italian. Bigger tribe/group. Also an argument that polities and policy should reflect these roughly country sized groups.

457 330 Cocaine is illegal and nobody uses cocaine. So it then stands to reason if Alabama or Louisiana makes abortion illegal, nobody in those states will have one.
___________

It is going to be interesting, from a social policy point of view, to see how people respond to the various new state laws.

We have long known that people respond to incentives. Federal lawmakers made abortion "free" for low-income women, and they responded by using it liberally, as a type of after-the-fact birth control method.

If Dobbs holds up and abortion regulation gets returned to the states, we're going to be able to see how women respond to a different set of incentives. For example, in states where women have to go out of state for an abortion after 12 weeks, there will likely be an uptick in birth control usage and probably also in the use of home pregnancy tests, combined with a decrease in the number of abortions. In states where abortion is not limited in any way and is funded by the state, we will likely see an increase in abortions.

472 Late to the thread, but a couple of factors have led me from being someone ambivalent about abortion to being absolutely opposed:

1) The Democrats and the other lefties are fvkcing ghouls that delight in killing babies up to the moment of birth.
2) As a cradle-Catholic that did not think deeply about the Church teachings, I had a reversion and am now a lay Dominican: the Church teaches that a human is two beings physical and spiritual, and a human being is created at the moment of conception.
3) This led me to understand that you don't solve social problems (such as poverty) or crimes (such as incest) by killing babies
