Good afternoon and welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Ask someone politely for a treat, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Guide Dogs

One of our Horde Families said farewell to a guide dog recently. I thought of them when I saw this short animated film.

Meet The PetMorons

dautrrsdoggie.jpg

I once-in-a-blue-moon post as ptleah. This is my daughter's Malti-Poo. His name is Pizza. She got him from the shelter 1 year ago this week. He identifies as a wolf but he is trapped inside a little Malti-Poo body. After my daughter's overnight nursing shifts they love to go for huge walks everywhere.

Thanks for what you do.

What a sweetie.

rodney tort.png

From Christopher:

This is Rodney. He is an African spurred tortoise. When Daughter #1 first saw him he was the size of a silver dollar. Now he is about two feet long and weighs around 65-70 pounds. He's about 20 years old, so that makes him a still a young kid (for a tortoise). When he wants to be he can be pretty speedy, which makes me re-think the whole tortoise & hare story.

What a pampered tortoise!

tank lounge.jpg

This is Tank's chaise lounge. He loves hanging out here more than anything, and will just about knock me over to get to it. He's my porch doggeh.

April

Looks like he's comfy there.

He's a Cavapoo. Loves his tennis ball and swimming in an (Alligator free, in FL) lake

There's a dog who's having fun!

stella berndood.jpg

From Deb:

This is Stella, our 9 week old bernedoodle. She loves her chew toys, and making sure we don't sleep too late!

Resident cat has not yet befriended her, but seems very curious and shows signs of warming up.

Interesting times in our home!

Well, today I've seen my first Cavapoo and my first Bernedoodle!

Love those PetMorons! Thank you for sharing your pets with us. We have a few couple left for next week.

Does the tortoise hibernate? Or is it turtles that hibernate?

When I was a kid my neighbors had a turtle/tortoise, not sure which one, named Elmo and they put him in a closet in the winter. He lived outdoors in the side yard the rest of the year and he ate fruit and lettuce if I remember correctly.

21 Afternoon, folk! It's raining here for the first time in furrever (heh!), which has put me in a good mood.

Continuing to bug me, though, is crazy black kitten Stirling. For those of you who haven't heard, I adopted him from a shelter about 4 hrs.' drive from here after seeing his pic on Petfinder. He looked very sturdy and confident, and he certainly is, as well as affectionate and adaptable. He recently passed his first vet visit: He's quite male, almost 5 lbs. at 3 mos., and has all his shots now.

He has, however, developed the early am habit of leaping next to me in the bed and trying to suckle and knead my neck as though trying to get milk from his mother! I thought it was cute enough at first, but his pressure was uncomfortable this morning -- and I don't want him doing that when he weighs 8-10 lbs. and has real fangs and claws. So I gently put him out of the bedroom. I guess I'll have to do that for a while until he grows out of it.

Greetings, horde.
I have a 3 year old beautiful, sweet Great Dane I need to rehome but nobody will take him because he has a bite history. Groomer, sitter, then my daughter who had to get three stitches. Always a reason in hindsight, but he’s 150 pounds.
Anyone interested? He’s on Xanax now. I don’t feel it should be a death penalty situation.
Thanks.

30 Our rescue dog, Luna, celebrates her fifth birthday this Tuesday. Her favorite food is brisket, so I'm making some brisket chunks for her birthday dinner. Her birthday present is a life vest. She stands on the steps of our pool and acts like she wants to jump in, but won't. We'll see if the vest helps her take the plunge.

Either way, I want to make her first birthday with us the best day ever.

35 Great Dane:
Ruger bit my daughter in the midst of a chaotic scene. I had just gotten back from a five day girls trip. Son and girlfriend walked in from having been away at school. Daughter and boyfriend walked in. Much excitement. Ru was destroying his new toy and when daughter reached down to take it, he bit her. Shouldn’t have happened tho. Each incident is semi explainable, but not acceptable.
Our first session with behavior modification trainer is next week.
Whether we can rehome him depends on whether he can be trained and trusted. Not sure.

42 Not a big deal in the grand scheme but we have a very small fish pond that had 12-14 pretty good sized goldfish. My wife (who has a soft spot a mile wide for kids) has always let the neighbor little girls feed them and put the fish food flakes on their hands so that the fishies would, over time, get use to them and come up to basically, eat out of their hands.

The kids took advantage of the 'rules' the other day while we were traveling and forgot their manners. Chasing the fish around by sticking their arms in to try to grab them, and when that didn't work, beat the water with sticks and such.

The water plants were destroyed and most of the fish didn't make it. I'm trying to not be too PO'd about it but, I've come to realize that I cared deeply about my fishies.

There were a lot of long faces around the picnic table this morning when R. basically put the kids on 'extinction' and revoked all visits and interactions.

Now I know how my Dad felt when he lost a bee hive.

44 The second photo reminds me of a story.

Back when I drove pizza in college, it was part of our job to try to keep pets inside during the delivery. Some of the older houses around the campus had these stoops about four feet above the ground. Once frosty winter night I was delivering to such a house when the temperature hovered around zero.

As the resident answered the door, the house cat saw its chance and hit the door running flat out. Of course both of us were too slow to corral the cat, but halfway down the four or five steps, said cat noticed that it was cold so the cat stopped, turned, and strolled back into the heated comfort of the house.

That was just about the funniest thing I ever saw on that job.

Over the course of our 16 years together, big red tabby Arizona would occasionally make a break for the outdoors. I think he was just curious as to what was out there, not wanting to leave his manservant (me) permanently. Invariably he'd get out, go a few yards, and freeze in a crouch, suddenly aware that This Is a Big Damn World Out Here. Which gave me time to scoop him up and tote him back inside.

Charlie walked around a bush and encountered Bean, who reared up and hissed at her. Bravo came barreling across the yard at full speed, as if to say. "You leave my little sister alone!"

54 During the winter months we will "occasionally" let the cats inside for the night, especially when it's bitterly cold. After the first or second time they get comfy and start camping out inside in various locations... refusing to go out again until the weather moderates.

They are, in a word, assholes.

I saved several of the pics the shelter took of him as a younger kitten, but he has grown some. He's all black, fuzzy around his tail and hindquarters and ruff; I expect he'll probably be medium- rather than long-haired. Right now his ears and paws are out of proportion to the rest of him. That's usually a hint that the owner of the ears will grow to be bigger than average.

79 Poodles...

My wife and I were on the beach one day when a loose standard Poodle charged us and began nipping at my wife's face. She freaked. I had nothing but my hands to use on the animal. In the mean time its owner is calling the dog from about 20 yards away. Not trying to control it.

I shoved it's head in the sand and stood on it's neck to keep it down so my wife could flee. It was "a scene."

I despise owners who cannot/do not control their animals.

82 Stories like these, about dogs biting and charging up to nip at someone, are a big part of why I've never been a dog person. Cats are at least partly wild still, not as domesticated as dogs, and yet they flee danger, they don't attack it.

Yeah, I know, guard dogs for the home have a value, but I'd still be damned nervous about such an animal; and the animal would know it.

____________

I'm with you Wolfus. I blame the owners mostly. In our case the owners were total dickheads. The guy immediately started bitching at me (while I was curb stomping his dog in the sand) instead of getting a leash on it. His girlfriend/wife was yelling to stop too.

Once he finally got a leash back on the dog I told him to get the fuck off the beach or I'd call the cops and report a vicious dog attack. He could deal with cops at that point.

They left. Literally dragging the dog through the sand by the leash.

110 We're dogsitting our daughters Dobi this weekend. He's such a baby but this morning on a walk, one of our older neighbors was walking his frufru tiny dog when he saw us. He grabbed his dog and ran to his front door. I understand being cautious but he was leashed and under control. It's been my experience that these little ankle biters are more vicious than any Doberman or Rotti.

111 Martini Farmer,
Dogs aren't allowed on the beaches here. But there's always a few dickheads who think the rules don't apply to them and have their dogs running around, shaking sand and helping themselves to people's lunch.
What's worse are people who bring their non service dogs into a service animal only area and think it's cute.

They are a Belgium Shepard. Similar to a GSD but much more athletic and intelligent. A large percentage of military dogs are Malinois.

Heidi will be a guard dog for us and grandkids. She'll start her first dawn and dusk patrols next week. Any training tips will be appreciated.

Posted by: Beartooth at June 25, 2022 06:02 PM (IuPqm)

139 Some riders I know have Malinois dogs. They do cross fit when not riding and have the energy to keep up with the breed so its cool. I like mutts, they are often a bit more chill, and we've managed to get adults from shelters or someone rehoming for decades now which also helps.

Posted by: PaleRider is simply irredeemable at June 25, 2022 06:10 PM (3cGpq)

140 I have a theory and it likely won't be popular. Dogs are not people. They don't talk to each other. They use physical means to settle disputes. People get dogs with the expectation they can verbally train them. Usually this runs into problems when the pup is a teenager and starts acting like a jerk. Long ago, I read the book by the monks of New Skete. They train GSDs. They mentioned the way a mama dog deals with pups and disciplines by grabbing the loose skin on the neck and giving a shake. And then there is the alpha wolf rollover. Not something you need with most dogs but handy.

The book I mentioned earlier also discusses dog bites. A vicious bite has a tearing motion. Most of these bites are warning bites. I am totally on board with someone having to rehome a dog for biting a child. But they may be fine in another home.

As for GSDs, mine was very protective. I always said it was like having a loaded gun and I would muzzle him, to be on the safe side when in public. You don't know what can trigger a reaction. Other dogs, like Jake, do not have a mean bone in their body. You just need to know your dog.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at June 25, 2022 06:11 PM (YynYJ)

141 There was someone on the springer group, talking about re-homing her 12 week old pup because he was biting. There were all sorts of suggestions, but someone much blunter than me asked them if they had ever had a dog before. Biting is what puppies do. You have to train them that it's not allowed. And if you aren't willing to do that, you shouldn't have a puppy.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at June 25, 2022 06:15 PM (YynYJ)

142 Sorry if this is the wrong place to make this comment and someone else hasn't corrected it but in earlier threads it was mentioned that the Roe was decided 6-3 when it was actually decided 5-4. Dobbs was decided 6-3.

Yes, that's happened to me, too. Cat runs down the front steps, then looks - Up. WAAAY uuuppp. "Uhhhh, there's no ceiling, there's no walls, uhhhhh - WHERE am I supposed to go??" Have to quick grab kitty before she darts under the rosebush.

Funny thing, at that time I had two always-indoor cats and one formerly-outdoor cat who had invited herself to live with me. The indoor cats were
always SO INTERESTED when I opened the front door to get the mail or whatever; but the outdoor cat
would quick walk back into the interior of the living room in order to Not Possibly, Nossir, Never, wind up outside again. She KNEW.
