Speaking of workplace covid shenanigans, apparently about half the engineering staff went out for lunch a couple of weeks ago and promptly coofed. Second, I finally got all my furniture here and in the hacienda so I'm really back to being LRob in TX. Relief! I lived near OKC for about 25 years; one time a semi full of steers tipped over at the I35/I40 interchange and none of them died. However, they ran all over hell. Rounding up cattle on the highway with horses isn't just an Oklahoma thing, it's an Iowa thing too. Our town used to have two major highways crossing, which was the last major stop before the cows got to the packing plant, and the cattle trucks weren't always latched properly. We used to joke about drive-thru hamburgers, especially since there was a Hardee's at the intersection!

My uncle tells the story (from the 1930's I'd guess) of when they herded their cows across a small Payson town to another acreage. He laughed and laughed about some kid that asked about why there were some of those white sons of bitches. ... I think these were shorthorns ... guess some were white.
But it was a few miles, herding down the roads seems odd now ... still done in parts of the West now, I hear. Posted by: illiniwek at June 10, 2022 10:43 PM (Cus5s) 116

"So why call it a good life if there is no happiness or meaning? -- Sounds like Buddism(?) Life is Pain. Life is about enduring pain. Etc. Even there there is meaning."
My current view, the "happiness is everything" meme is wrong. "You will own nothing and be happy" aligns with happiness as the ultimate. Meaningful Purpose is the ultimate, a sort of athletic competition, but in the realm of spiritual competition against our enemy ... the Devil. Or just look at the general AoS Zeitgeist ... a contest against the principalities and powers of the Commie Left, as their Pharisees in media and DeepState preach their false doctrines, punish their enemies. Mostly our blog efforts are not bloody, but they are real efforts against the propaganda machine. That is the "spiritual contest". The New Testament language is often more Olympic contest like ... "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. If you work in a health facility that is extremely careful about disinfecting everything that is touched, you might not get it. Posted by: nerdygirl at June 10, 2022 11:06 PM (+lVUW) We are retired as well. After isolating for the first few months we now go about our daily normal life, including family gatherings. from last thread ... with a revision ...
But Protestants seemed (to me) to still view themselves as subjects of the king. Only America broke free, sovereign man's God given rights recognized, an independent man viewed as his own owner/leader, coordinating with locals, his state, and on limited issues, the federal government. But even the early colonies allowed a lot of government (state level) control of people, like with some church attendance required I think. -- next step ... IF USA was the first time a government was established to explicitly extradite the sovereign Christian man with his God given rights, from the "state owns the man" status, how did we (by allowing the DeepState) surrender it? Gun Owners of America's analysis of H.R. 7910 concludes disassembling then reassembling your perfectly legal firearm without holding a firearm's manufacturers license violates this new law.
Their explanation: H.R. 7910 reclassifies many common gun parts as "ghost guns" unless they are serialized (ex. AR upper or handgun slides); The bill prohibits the assembly of "ghost guns"; If you clean your gun and reassemble it, you will have violated Section 301 (b)(aa)(1)(A) of the bill. They should just have a billionaire who donated to both campaigns, Bezos or Omidyar or someone, moderate the "debate." He could promise a stable of Pinoy orphan catamites to Graham if he wins, or another mansion in the Hamptons along with the secret billionaire gout treatment for Bernie. Then hand them both baseball bats and have them bludgeon each other to death for his (and our) amusement.
Because of Bernie's decrepitude, I'd put my chips on Graham, but there's always a chance he just reflexively keisters his bat and loses. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at June 11, 2022 12:14 AM (xPIwr) 311

So MSNBC buy likes to quote the Bible (as does Satan) ... "Sarah", the Mayberry and Hooterville operators (I assume these were different Sarah's), while great comedic exaggerations, where indeed based on more than a small kernel of truth. Imagine the setup. Telephone exchange in a small town, also serving rural customers. In the old days, the phone company would set up a local resident to the be the operator, and put the switchboard right in their house in town. They preferred old maids, unmarried older gals who still lived with their folks. This is Sarah. Her older mother and father, if still alive, could handle all the household chores, leaving Sarah free to woman the switchboard all day, and even be on emergency standby at night. Ol' Doc might have an emergency or something. I remember reading a very interesting history of this about the old phone systems one time. So, Sarah, while an exaggeration, was indeed a thing. She might be a little gossipy, and might indeed be known to listen in on a phone call she thought particularly juicy. Posted by: Walter Freeman at June 10, 2022 11:26 PM (4NlP1) The only times I'm good with canned beans is if I'm making my own refried beans (the canned ones are softer and easier to crush 'smooth') and making 3- or 4-bean salad (sometimes I do without the wax beans but it always has canned kidneys, garbanzos and string beans). Oh, yeah, and sometimes I'll make a small quickie batch of canned white bean, sausage, pasta, escarole soup when I'm feeling particularly lazy (or hungry). In the early days, the budding phone companies attempted to use teenaged boys as operators. They had worked out well for gophers and such work in the telegraph days. They did not work out so well for the telephone operators. Their what we now call telephone etiquette was not so great. In fact, it sucked. Women made great operators, they discovered. Some had the single women only rule, but that was not the case always. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 11, 2022 02:27 AM (Mzdiz) 406

The first automatic dialing system was the "Strowger switch", invented by one Almon Brown Strowger. Was he some eee-lectri injuneer? Nope, he was an undertake, a mortician in a small town (but he had some other electrical background). The wife of one of his competitors was an operator at the local telephone exchange. He got pissed because anytime anyone would call and, say, "Get me the funeral home", she would direct them to her husband's business, and not his. That prompted him to develop the automatic dial system. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 11, 2022 02:33 AM (Mzdiz) 408
Telephone exchange in a small town, also serving rural customers. In the old days, the phone company would set up a local resident to the be the operator, and put the switchboard right in their house in town.
------ In the small town when I was a boy (Pop. 700), the telephone company was run by the widow of the man who started it. It was just as you stated above. The lines themselves were maintained by her high-school aged son, and two other teenagers, one of whom is my BIL. These guys were adept at using climbing irons. 17-18 years old. The 'phone book' was a couple of mimeographed sheets. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 11, 2022 02:34 AM (8hy0r) 409

If you want to spend some money on antique phones, you can still get an original Strowger dial phone for some money. These things, however, are not compatible with the standard pulse rotary dial system that later became ubiquitous and standard. Look that up if interested. My folks had a private before I was born in '67, but before that, they had a party line. They built the house in '60 -- well moved in then. They, my grandmother down the road a little bit, and two neighbors were on a party line. One of those neighbors was bad to listen in on other conversations. My father figured it out one time, when he realized this neighbor knew something he could have only heard from eavesdropping on a phone conversation. He learned this neighbor's phone, with online, would make a certain noise pattern, and could recognize when he was listening in. One time he heard that noise, and just said, "Better be careful, cause ol' So-and-so is listening in now!" That ended it. He couldn't say anything, cause if he did, he would admit he was indeed listening in. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 11, 2022 02:49 AM (Mzdiz) 418

Posted by: publius ------ Well, it was all WE stuff...mostly. In the case of these decoders, they were located at each way station, with a single pair of wires serving all stations in the district. Each station could be addressed by sending a sequence of pulses, the decoder at the addressed station would step in response, and if the sequence corresponded to that station's address, then a contact at the station would close. It is fun to watch the thing operate. It was extremely well engineered. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 11, 2022 02:59 AM (aiTDG) 424

The old party line ringing system was interesting. In some cases, they just used different ring patterns for each party on the line. Now, another system, which they used for the old party line my folks were on, used tuned ringers. The phones were 3-wire devices. The talk circuit was on the standard 2 wire, single pair, tip and ring. But the ringer was wired between one side and a third, grounded wire. They had tuned ringers, tuned both electrically *and* mechanically. I think they could have 4 parties on the same line with that. By tuning both electrically and mechanically, you could have the ringer only respond to a certain frequency, and not move with the other. Hey Horde - greetings from HK.
On the Jet-ski caption my submission: "I see this thing has not one but TWO roomy trunks!" *** OK - I denounce myself. So - in other matters - the Donks decided to have their little prime time show trial thinking it will stem the tide of absolute anger and disgust over the effect their incompetence and policies (BIRM) have had over every aspect of the economy, kids, the border and peoples' lives generally. I have news for them. People either a) don't give a f* about the small incidence of civil disorder at the capital that day; or b) don't think it was really much of an event at all and that this is all made up outrage; or c) think that having Congress in fear of the wrath of We the People is a good thing and think it should happen more often. Either way - shooting their wad in June on this stupidity will not even be a blip on people's radar when they vote in November. If inflation is still a problem and the economy still sucks and dem trannies are still pedo perving on kids in October expect a nuclear level decimation of Dems at the polls on election day. A non-tuned ringer will respond and ring with a wide frequency range. I think the original was somewhere around 20 Hz. With the tuned ringers, you'd impose two frequencies on from each side to ground, giving you 4 total "addresses". IIRC, if a phone's tuned ringer got out of tune, it would sometimes try to ring one another party's frequency. That was how this neighbor would be alerted to my father getting a call, IIRC. I looked it up. Standard ring signal in the US is 90VAC, 20 Hz. The tuned ringers would be tuned to 20 Hz and 30 Hz. Two sides to ground, and you had 4 addresses. They might use more than that, 8 party line total. There they would use a different ring pattern to split each address. There were other frequency standards in different countries. But standard US ring is 90V, 20Hz. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 11, 2022 03:42 AM (Mzdiz) 433
