Top Story

  • Apple's new M2 chip ain't all that. (Tom's Hardware)

It's by no means bad, but it's pretty comparable to AMD's 6800U. The M2 has better single-threaded performance; AMD has better multi-threaded. The raw compute performance of the respective GPUs (10 graphics cores in the M2, 12 in the 6800U) is similar, but benchmarks of the Mac Studio showed it falling behind in all but a few very specific graphics benchmarks.

    And they're both 15W parts.

Still, if you're Mac-inclined, and spending your own money, not a bad option.

Tech News

  • Apple's M2 Pro and M2 Max are still expected to enter production this year on TSMC's brand new 3nm process. (WCCFTech)

Given the lead times of advanced semiconductor fabrication - 4 to 6 months - and TSMC's own statements, we shouldn't expect completed products until 2023, and probably not in Q1 either.

  • Dell has announced a new Threadripper Pro 5000 workstation - the Precision 7865. (Tom's Hardware)

It's not an impressive design though. While it can house a 64 core CPU and a terabyte of RAM, apart from the USB-C ports the case could have come from 2002. And they only provide five expansion slots for a CPU that has 128 lanes of PCIe.

  • A senior Chinese economist has written that China "must seize TSMC". (Tom's Hardware)

China's home-grown semiconductor efforts are currently about where Intel was in 2009 - which is not as bad as it seems, because Intel was doing great in 2009. But many generations behind TSMC, Samsung, or Intel today.

The problem with this idea is that TSMC is not, say, two hundred thousand square miles of prime agricultural real estate where if you drop a few bombs - or a few hundred - the value remains largely intact.

It's more like a bridge, over an impassable canyon, made of glass. Seizing it intact would require the cooperation of TSMC itself, which is unlikely to be forthcoming.

  • Want a bunch of NVMe storage for your new Threadripper Pro workstation? Highpoint has you covered. (Tom's Hardware)

The card comes with eight M.2 slots, a massive heatsink/fan arrangement, and a PCIe switch. $729 for PCIe 3.0, and $1099 for PCIe 4.0.

11 "We Must Seize TSMC" Urges Senior Chinese Economist

TSMC negotiating with the EU to set up shop in Europe, clearly they are concerned about the Chicoms invading Taiwan. The Chicoms taking over Taiwan, or at least attempting to do that, as I see it is a done deal. This rises out of a sense of national pride or completeness but it also is strategic as it rounds out their control of the South China Sea. Couple this to their naval build out of which the latest example is a very modern aircraft carrier, China's rapidly becoming an international military force.

Through the years-long Belts and Roads initiative the Chicoms have a strangle hold on some very key third world assets around the world be they ports or raw materials. As for the first world Nations the Chicoms.have hollowed out the manufacturing sector and now dominate many industries that are essential to a functioning Western society such as certain pharmaceuticals as was surfaced in the covid panic. Add in the relentless push to make the Chinese currency the world reserve currency and you see the beginnings of their intent to effectively turn the entire world into a Chicom colony.

Posted by: m at June 08, 2022 05:11 AM (4rA9e)

13 I'm sure seizing TSMC won't be that hard, using their connections China can just promise 10% to the big guy, and the next day he'll urge his hedgefund buddies to donate their ownership stakes and stock shares to Hunter, who work tirelessly with his business partners to make the company a ChiCom darling.

Getting rid of Boudin is excellent news and hopefully is an indicator that Gascon down in LA is gone too in November. In a normal population with normal values such as the audience at AOS you would expect his replacement to be a no-nonsense constitutionally based prosecutor. We're talking California here which is completely abnormal in every dimension possible. Odds on the new DA will be someone who will make sure that the California elites car windows are no busted out daily and that the inconveniences of having their Walgreens shut down cuz it gets looted every 2 hours will soon be a thing of the past.

18 The most absurd election in the United States just occurred for the assessor's office in Las cruces, New Mexico. The woman who won the three way Democrat primary, which is completely unopposed by any other party, has never held an executive government position of any kind or has had any experience at any level in the county government. She literally knows nothing about what the assessors job does except paying the tax bill they send her twice a year. Her plans? Ortega said she plans to take courses through the EDGE program — a program through New Mexico State University that educates officials on public sector and local government work . This is going to work out well.

28 The Apple software and hardware roll out was most entertaining. My two favorite items were how Apple invented with this rollout widgets on the lock screen of a smartphone and implementing resizable windows in a tablet. Come on Android, come on Microsoft you guys suck for letting Apple invent something that you could have years ago. The goofiest feature was the software and hardware that allows the user to place their iPhone on the top of a Mac laptop screen and turn it into a webcam because nobody ever uses their smartphone while in a webcam conference. I guess it was too hard to improve the actual webcam embedded in the screens of the Mac laptops. The most intriguing rollout is what what they are doing with Apple Auto, if this is a preview of a car that they will engineer it's going to be pretty mind-blowing.

32 TSMC keeps China from moving on Taiwan. Relocating it to Europe gives China a green light to invade without worry.

A better Taiwan strategy would be to break up TSMC and scatter it across Taiwan, such that no part of Taiwan can be attacked without jeopardizing a golden goose.

And she is exactly who you don't want in government. Her career history is she ran a bakery into the ground and blamed it on the city for fixing the road in front of her business. That inspired her to run for executive offices five times all over the county and failed each time because she doesn't have any experience. Sixth time is the charm in her new career as being a career bureaucrat. Her agenda is making herself important, having power, and odds on becoming magically wealthy while working in government. Can't wait until she starts running for a national office, the grift will be strong in this one.

Digging deeper, the reason she probably won was she seems like the least corrupt out of the three Donks running for the office, no Republican bothered to run.

One of here opponents was put on administrative leave "after and investigation," her other opponent seems like an even lighter weight than she was.

Either way, if she plays her cards right, she too can be speaker of the house.

It's warm here in Las Cruces this week, 100° during the day and 70° at night. Of course the humidity is about 21%. Beginning in July it mitigates somewhat and by September it's lovely in October is perfect. The stretch from November to February is a bit cold at night and once again from April through May is perfect. As for food and music we have both though I'm expecting that to end before FJB is sent to his permanent memory care center.

80 Thanks, Salty. Son took me to the Dr. yesterday because I'm only supposed to drive starting today. Afterwards we had a nice Thai meal and conversation. Spouse has been making a lot of burgers because that and pasta and chicken with vegetables are all he knows how to cook, but they have been kind men and very helpful. I have a good family. Son and I even talked about how you talk to a girl because being introverted and autistic
Makes initiating conversations difficult.

The good news is that they seem to have caught all my cancer. It was a stage one so I am thanking God and grateful for all the prayers of the horde. It means so much to me. They also think I have diverticulitis but after having what feels like almost every test known to mankind since April I am done with doctors for a while .

Thanks for your kindly support, brother Salty.

Unfortunately, my rep, Chris Smith (Rino, NJ) won last night so he will probably be re-elected to his 22nd term. The guy hasn't even lived in NJ for 40 of the last 42 years of his tenure.

Remember Van Drew--the guy who switched from D to R several years ago? He won his primary in south Jersey with 87% and is a lock for November.

148 My first birth was traumatic in a clinic and my second birth was a home birth but by the third even a midwife in my home was too much,” lamented Peukert, who has seven children with her husband. “This time I had no doctors appointments or scans or outside influence.
She added, “We didn’t have a due date or deadline for the baby to arrive, we just trusted that our baby would make its way.”
Peukert opted for a "free birth" due to prior traumatic experiences she had while giving birth at the hospital
And Peukert claims that the saltwater birth has paid dividends as Bodhi is a “really calm and satisfied baby.”
Her unconventional birthing method was praised by many commenters, with one Instagram fan writing: “What a legend, what a mother, what a lucky boy! Pure nature is all you need.”
