Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Vice Is Again Looking to Cut Costs and Hoping for a New Buyer to Keep It AfloatVia Clownfish TV, this report from The Information states that Vice will be mounting a new round of cost-cutting to try to stretch out its solvency while it searches for some sucker to buy it. Vice does not make money. It will never make money. It just wants a series of Sugar Daddies willing to pump money into it forever to keep its overpaid, underperforming staff paid.Oh no, not another round of layoffs at Vice...! The article says that they can only estimate what Vice is worth. They guess it's worth, maybe, "at least one billion." (And they owe $1.1 billion in debt?) It was valued at $5.7 billion just a few years ago. Clownfish TV points out that many of these media and tech company start-ups had a business model of getting a huge pile of venture capital money, running the company for a few years while pretending it might turn a profit in the near future, and then finding a sucker they could then sell the company too for a lot of money, leaving them holding the bag on a company that would probably always lose money. And these companies have relied on very low interest rates, and very cheap money, to remain afloat. Because they never, ever made money, and have run at a loss every single quarte, they have required periodic infusions of fresh "investments" from venture capital firms or other investors to keep them afloat. And investors have been willing to play along, because until now, money have been very, very cheap. You can always get another loan to refresh your old one. But now the era of cheap money is ending. Interest rates are going to keep on climbing, and loans are going to become more and more expensive. Few are going to want to keep shoveling stacks of cash into the Money Furnaces of failing tech/media companies that were stupid ideas even in 2017 and are just preposterous now. This Business Insider article is written in such a strident way that it loses credibility, but I do think it's probably a lot more right than wrong: All of the tech/media companies that have been kept alive only by a steady IV drip of fresh infusions of "investment" money -- really, new subsidies -- are about to have the plug pulled on them and be allowed to die. Among the pieces of evidence the article amasses for a coming correction: The major tech investment firm SoftBank has announced that it will cut its investments in startups in half. The biggest Silicon Valley startup accelerator Y Combinator is advising its portfolio founders to "prepare for the worst:" Y Combinator, a Silicon Valley kingmaker, is advising its portfolio founders to "plan for the worst" as startups across the globe scramble to navigate a sharp reversal after a 13-year bull run.And a many other tech investors are preparing "Black Swan" memos also warning of possible wipeouts in the sector. Below, Ryan Long plays the role of a Vice reporter begging and pleading for a White Knight investor to come along and pour more money into the failing Vice. He tries to sell investors on this proposition by bragging about all the great articles Vice has published -- real articles, note. Ryan Long isn't making these up. These are real Vice articles. He starts off with a specialty of Vice -- articles insisting that straight men routinely engage in all sorts of gay behaviors and gay sex. I'm sure their Chest Binder for Kids (TM) sales are going through the roof, though. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

It only gets worse from here. Not only is the VC money drying up, but so is the consumer market. There's a lot of YOLO going on but pretty soon that party will end. It's also going to hit the service sector as the majority of people tap out their credit (which is at an all time high). There's an economic storm brewing thanks to Democrats absolute abuse of our currency, debt, industries and the people.

Meanwhile, Amazon's PE ratio is 60 now, after it had a big fall. And Amazon at least sells some grocery items, unlike all of the other totally discretionary tech stocks. Amazon's insane practice of putting everything that claims to be X in the same bin, regardless of the provenance, has caused people to start to regard Amazon with the same suspicion as people do of eBay. For loads of electronics devices, it's worth the cost increase to simply order from the manufacturer and be guaranteed you're not getting an aliExpress special. Plenty of people still roll the dice, but I've noticed a big trend among my friends and family not to expect genuine parts when ordering from Amazon. Vice was worth $6 billion in the same way if I put my used bed sheets on ebay for $6 billion. They find a banker who's in on the grift to give them a completely inflated evaluation (and many times the bank get % of the money raised) and then get investors to give them that money, since those investors are using other people's money and get a yearly % no matter if they make or lose money. It's all a scam.

Even though these companies have no viable business model, if I was a wealthy conservative, I would snatch them up.
It's funny because wealthy liberals understand this, there's a reason people like Jobs widow bought the Atlantic or Bezos buys the Washington Post, and on and on with examples. Conservatives seem to think its just about writing some big checks for TV ads for Republicans during a few months of election season. Democrats see the bigger picture of owning media outlets. 225 I get it: Does anyone think things will be better next year? Take that vacation now with $5/gal gas cuz what are the chances you'll be able to do it with $12/gal fuel prices? Especially if you punted vacations because of covid restrictions. Bingo. If you're paying any kind of attention, the odds of being able to take a vacation in the future don't seem great, so do it now when it's hard instead of later when it's impossible. Gabe is currently arguing on Twitter that there's nothing sexual about drag shows, by the way.
Posted by: Ian S. at June 07, 2022 05:14 PM (ZGrMX) --- It's audience contains people with a Y chromosome, of course on some level it is sexual. Why would men, in general, go see a gussied-up female singer--assuming it's not a stripping act? Part of it is sexual. Why is it that drag shows appeal mostly to male-attracted men? Even though this can be technically true, it's too disingenuous to be taken seriously-- not to mention it's not going to lick itself. Posted by: Axeman at June 07, 2022 05:25 PM (krQz2) 275

Just came back from Target. Parking lot not very full, but the store shelves are stocked to the ceiling, sans discounts.
Bags are free, though (I think). Posted by: Ziba at June 07, 2022 05:26 PM (4h9M3) 277

Whenever you see someone arguing that it's totally fine for kids to be at drag shows, because they're totally nonsexual and totally a blessing of liberty, it's time to suspend that dude in an iron cage and charge admission to pelt them with rotten vegetables. I have made it a point to skip Target during June. I used to do a weekly haul. I have gone less than once a month since the pandemic. I just focused on the local grocery and Costco.
It sucks, because I generally find the quality much better than Walmart, but they just insist on being a##hats. Posted by: Sassy at June 07, 2022 05:27 PM (xSICi) 280
Plus, Target went all in on tranny bathrooms a few years back and some people still remember that and avoid the joint like the plague.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 07, 2022 I dumped Target after they booted the Salvation Army and now I've booted the Salvation Army. Posted by: Beartooth at June 07, 2022 05:32 PM (NQrvS) 281
Aren't drag shows ALL men dressing up as women? Does this make them a transvestite or a trans woman? How is a trans woman different from a Man in drag? What is the purpose of Drag if not to entice heterosexual men? Is it like performers in black face pretending to be POC ? I thought that was a nono, cultural appropriation.

Dare we hope that Google will bite the dust? They rely on advertising.. and if that dries up, they are done.
Apple is sitting on billions in the bank; I think they could run for 20 years without changing a thing even if they didn’t make a dollar of revenue. I think their brush with corporate death in the 90’s is still lurking in the background. Maybe Facebook will die too. Posted by: Rafal GanGanowicz at June 07, 2022 05:37 PM (tgIla) 283

Ryan Long needs to become a humorless scolding SJW, maybe TV networks would offer him a late night show. Hilarious stuff.
