I seem to recall something in my casual studies of language that "oc" in Old French was the word for "yes." "Oui" was the word in the Parisian dialect, which eventually won out. So is this "Point of Yes"? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 06, 2022 09:33 AM (txdEq) 20

Lovely artwork to depict a generation that is quickly dying off and were unabashedly in favor of saving the world from madmen. How far we have fallen since. I'd send this to my ex son-in-law who once asked why WWII soldiers and civilians were considered the greatest generation but I'm sure he's still an asshole and wouldn't understand. I know very few in my family that would give their all to save their fellow men and women as this generation did. Sad!

My uncle missed D-Day, but was dropped off in France to walk into Germany sometime later. He said the winter of 1944-1945 was a cold sumbitch. At least once, they stumbled into a bombed out house in the dark and realized the next morning they had slept on the frozen bodies of German soldiers.

I got to hold a vintage Walther P-38 at the gun range once. Of course I'd always wanted one; it was the core element of the famous Special pistol on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (A Mauser was used first, and was discarded as unreliable for shooting blanks. Plus it looked too small on screen with all the attachments that turned the gun into a carbine.) I was disappointed in the Walther, though. The grip was far too wide for my hand to hold comfortably.
A P.08 Luger, on the other hand, was perfect for my paw, and I even got to fire it. It was amazing. It seemed as though the bullets went where you pointed the gun, every time. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 06, 2022 09:49 AM (txdEq) 89

These men didn't set out to be heroes. It was thrust on them by the planners who set them on a beach into withering machine gun fire and artillery, then up a cliff because it was the only way off the beach.
They did what they had to do to survive. It left a scar on all the survivors, no doubt about it. Posted by: OneEyedJack at June 06, 2022 09:51 AM (MFphb) 93

Word of the Normandy laandings reached VI Corps in Italy, prompting some hopeful thinking of a possible quick Nazi collapse, especially is "Joe" Stalin joined the offensive.
June 6, 1944 First news this morning was the invasion. Really sounded good. I’ll bet Gerry doesn’t last long now. The beauty of the thing is this is no small scale operation. We have enough troops and tanks and planes to move right on. With our front cracked wide open Gerry has lots of worry on his mind. Now if “Joe” only decides to open up we’ll have the thing pretty well sewed up. Corps Arty moved again today. This time to a “villa” about a mile and a half across the river, just west of the Vatican. Nobody knows where any one else is. Everybody, it seems, has one idea in mind and that is to head north. Our leading elements are 25 miles beyond Rome. PW count is beyond all expectation. Over 2500 came in in one day. Latest VI Corps count, which is incomplete, is 8,028 as of yesterday. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at June 06, 2022 09:53 AM (Tae6h) ----------------- Well, it works like this: One starts out as an illustrator, then, somehow, one gets noticed, the price goes up, and, voila! Art. Posted by: Zombie Norman Rockwell at June 06, 2022 09:55 AM (5pTK/) 116

Update on Junior's summer homeschool efforts:
Today is Day 1, and it seems to be going really well. His first task was just to read whatever he wanted (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), except that I handed him a dictionary, a composition book, and a pencil and told him to write down the words and first definitions of any words he didn't know. Second task is straight up copywriting. I handed him The Hobbit and told him to copy out the first two songs (the break the plates song, and Misty Mountains Old), and he's down there practically singing the broken plates song as he copies it out. I hope this can keep up. Next will be history, and he chose (out of Washington, Lincoln, and Napoleon), to read about Lincoln. He'll read for a bit, and then do some copywriting around that as well (the Gettysburg Address, of course). Then, science. He picked a book about the history of space travel. That AmGreat article is flawed. He is comparing apples to oranges. He shows national results from one polling series then compares them to state polling series from other firms. He doesn't use results from the same firm using same methodology. If you use Baris polling as a baseline (same firm/methodology) Trump leads Biden in a theoretical 2024 matchup 46-40, Walker leads Warnock 44-40, and Republicans have a 4-5 point preference over Dems nationally. Any polling out of PA is suspect right now because they are the typical Dem leading polls. That article is pretty much garbage, author doesn't understand polling. @ByronYork 'The president has expressed exasperation that his poll numbers have sunk below those of Donald Trump.' His solution: Travel more, highlight his administration's wonderful accomplishments. . . . . Members of Biden's inner circle, including first lady Jill Biden and the president' s sister, Valerie Biden Owens, have complained that West Wing staff has managed Biden with kid gloves, not putting him on the road more or allowing him to flash more of his genuine, relatable, albeit gaffe-prone self. One person close to the president pushed for more "let Biden be Biden" moments, with the president himself complaining he does not get to interact enough with voters. The White House has pointed to both security and Covid concerns in restricting the travel of the 79-year-old president. - Like Shakespeare said, "Cry 'Havoc!' And let slip the unicorns of politics!" The Rangers made it up the cliff with surprisingly light casualties. The guns were gone, having been moved by the Germans on the night of 4/5 June. Heavy cloud cover prevented photo recon from seeing this. The commander of the Rangers sent out patrols, which located and destroyed the guns within 90 minutes of seizing the clifftop. The Ranger's really heavy casualties came in the second part of their mission: cut the clifftop road that communicated between Utah and Omaha beaches. They held, unsupported, for 48 hours, preventing the Germans from shuttling reinforcements between the beachheads.

I've sometimes struggled at times in my life to fully comprehend the pathology of the axiom "No good deed goes unpunished."
At a cursory glance, I have oft taken it to mean that when you undertake selfless acts, the cosmos would capriciously throw knives at you in some sort of twisted, perverse turn of fate. But the truth is probably closer to this, selfless sacrifice is an attribute only dear and logical to our Creator, manifest most visibly in His corporeal appearance as Christ Jesus on earth. So to the believer and those in tune with the Lord, selfless acts of bravery are the ultimate adherence to the example of set and even proclaimed by Christ, who noted that man have no greater love than to die for his kinsman. But to the unbeliever, virtue and sacrifice are weaknesses; tools to be exploited, weapons to be summoned. Our rulers routinely conjure the images of the selfless man, not out of honor and reverence, but to maintain an unexploited resource, a strategic valor reserve, if you will, that it may ply for its own disgusting use. Thus, it is imperative that when one lay his life down, be sure the cause is worthy in Christ and not merely a tool of the wicked. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at June 06, 2022 10:18 AM (66TLh) 212

As a kid i read almost nothing but science, paleontology, dinosaurs, mythology, some archeology(related to the mythology),some chemistry(I took my Gilbert Chemistry set very seriously ) then Tom Swift and some comic books. Until 5th grade, then we moved and the teacher convinced my parents that my...uh...idiosyncratic reading choices would warp and limit my development. Asshole. Anyway, that led to a lot of boring books thrust upon me. I could still read science but it had to be tempered with more "mainstream reading". Then I discovered SF and horror and I was fine. Bitter clinger - the counter policy to what you're thoughtfully discussing is found in the old Viking sagas, "never leave a live enemy behind you." The thought was, kill your enemies whenever you had them down, or else they'd jump back up and bite you in the ass.

It’s a haven for scuba divers with the hundreds wrecks, tanks etc. There is also the problem of salvage , there is a museum that has recovered personal effects of those who drowned etc. and families want it stopped. US government is working with France and GB to resolve how to protect these wrecks

I think they regularly get below a million views, which is why someone like Gutfield is able to overtake them so easily on cable.
The strength is, supposedly, how much these things get shared on social media, but it's always been a suspect argument. Yeah, Colbert is getting shared, but so is Gutfield. The analysis I've seen never compares the social media impact of both, it just presents the left side's as a big plus. One of the more odd little missions US Navy PT boats carried out was to sneak up to the beaches at Normandy and dig up some of the sand for analysis because some boffin thought tanks would get bogged down.

Posted by: Minnfidel at June 06, 2022 10:50 AM (GwxCX) ========= The celebrity used to be a rare creature. You saw them on the silver screen and, once a year, at the Oscars. They were glamorous and remote. The loss of control over celebrities started in the 70s or so with people like Warren Beatty trying to use their national platforms to bang chicks and influence political change in public. Morals clauses went out the window, and they became far more ubiquitous. The rise of television also helped dilute the number of stars. This degraded for decades until social media when you could get unfiltered views at celebrities all the time. No longer remote or glamorous, they became rich, entitled, arrogant, and ignorant in front of us all at once. Seeing them appear on a talk show to flack their latest project was just less interesting in the 00s and 10s than in the 80s. My memory is that they did use a lot of what they learned in the Pacific in planning D-Day. Because back then we had a competent military command. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at June 06, 2022 10:18 AM (66TLh) Basically, you're way over-thinking this, or haven't run a business where you help people who created their own problems. I think everyone learns this to a certain degree. If someone comes to you for help, ie. your job, and they haven't valued themselves in this aspect and thus your services. If you give into the impulse to help ala charity, you will simply get screwed in some way shape or form. Because they don't value what you do, they won't follow up properly have more issues and eat up a tone of your productive time. If they think you're a great guy, guess what? They recommend their asshople friends who also have no money and waste your time. They may be lying, which is often the case, and actually have money but play you for a sucker. Happens a lot if you let it. Or, they may want drugs, if you fall for their ploy, they think you're a sucker and send all of their drugged-up a-hole friends to your office and scare off business. It's just a truism of life. Posted by: naturalfake at June 06, 2022 11:03 AM (5NkmN) 413

No abject silliness?
But, but . . . what will we write about? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 06, 2022 10:57 AM (txdEq) --- This blog reminds me of the Monty Python sketches that stopped abruptly when a military man stomped into the sketch, shutting it down because it was too silly. Mainly it was because the Pythons didn't quite know how to deliver a punchline on certain skits--so they just stopped it for being too silly... I saw one of Kate McKinnon or Kristin Wiig (they kind of are the same person aren't they?) in a movie where she's the side piece for some rich guy and unhappy about it.
She ends up settling instead for a nice guy sheriff. And it made me laugh because the move is subtlety very un-pc. You mean what "the heart wants!" might not always be the best choice? And settling for a sheriff. No, that's not Elon Musk, but sheriff is a pretty high prestige job in our society... Posted by: 18-1 at June 06, 2022 11:05 AM (ESjRY) 417

Mom and Dad Save the World manages to be charming and awful at the same time. Morgan Freeman is in it, and it is always nice to see huge actors back when they were in vaguely embarrassing movies.

Those were real heroes, not the diluted ones of today.
There is something in our Modern-Day Conservative gene that makes us have to say things like this. I found a formula for making a contact explosive in one of my Dad's old college chemistry texts using iodine crystal and household ammonia, so I had to try that, natch. also, thermite. a-a-a-a-a-and other stuff. I'm lucky I have all my fingers. Nitrogen tri-iodide Jolie whipped up a batch in the movie Salt with first aid supplies and ammonia in the janitor's closet (you kind of had to go with it, because she did not wash it with alcohol and dry it so that it would actually work). Our high school chemistry teacher used to put drops of it on the windows of the classroom. When dried it was minefield for flies. On occasion, as a fly would investigate one of the mini-mines there would be a poof and a little purple smoke interrutpting on of his lectures. Chemistry is fun! 341 There's a problem with pointing out that the Left's past heroes were all horrible. They want to destroy the whole past, not just ours. FDR was horrible? Well, that's because he was racist and awful and all of America's past is racist and awful and the only way forward is an anti-racist future that puts white people in their place.

My friend Walt Ehlers went ashore "in the back half of the first wave". He received the MOH a few days later for his actions in Goville, France. Walt has passed away like most of them.
One night we were having dinner and I told Walt I don't think I could have done it. He told me with the right training, I could have done it. I was still not sure, but if I was following him I would have done it. Thank goodness America raised people like that. When I read that soldiers are getting mail from command on Juneteenth etc I wonder if we could pull something like that off again..... Posted by: jeff at June 06, 2022 05:53 PM (pvt9V) 436
