19 Morning, all! Mid-point of a 3-day weekend for me.

Grit channel is showing a 1936 Western with the young John Wayne, Winds of the Wasteland. So far it seems to be about the ending of the Pony Express, and JW's character has to find some other way to make a living. It's in color -- possibly colorized, since a budget Western in '36 would probably not have been filmed in color.

It's too light out to see Venus, now. As I mentioned last thread, tonight was a conjuction of Mars and Jupiter. Closest approach occured at around 4:57 AM EDT.

Venus, Jupiter-Mars, and Saturn were in a nice, near-straight arc across the sky, all visible just before sunrise.

I saw it from the front porch. Beautiful. Venus, the "Morning Star" (and Evening Star, sometimes) was brilliant. Too light to see it, not.

Anyway, I realized the inspiration of the hymn, "The Lily of the Valley (I've Found a Friend in Jesus)": "He's the lily of the valley, the bright and morning star..."

It's kind of a slow film. JW doesn't have a fight scene until a good 20 minutes in. I'd guess audiences were willing to wait a bit longer for a payoff in movies in those days.

The other actors seem kind of stiff; and you could be forgiven for thinking, based on this movie along, that this Wayne guy was never going to be a major star. . . .

To the East. Right before first light. Jupiter and Mars were a full Moon's width apart tonight at 4:57AM EDT. I saw it.

I just happened to step outside on the back porch to relieve my bladder, and looked up, and saw a bright star, and a dim red one very close together. It was around 4:40 or so. I got thinking, that red thing has got to be Mars, and it's pretty close to something. It's too bright to be a star, so it's got to be another planet. I looked it up, and voila, Jupiter-Mars conjunction.

While I wasn't thinking about such at the time, the spot I picked to build Miley's (an my) house it perfect for seeing such, at least to the East to South viewing range. Noth and West, we're too close to the trees.

But it was perfect for tonight's view. Anything happens close to sunrise, and we're perfect for it. I woke Miley up to see the nice arc of Venus, Mars-Jupiter, and Saturn from the front porch. Beautiful sight.

Again, in mid-June, with the Strawberry Moon, we'll have five planets in the ecliptic arc all visible just before dawn, with Uranus and Neptune too, if you get some binoculars and a chart to know exactly where to look.

Seven planets, you can see all up there across the ecliptic.

There were about a dozen adults on the deck and a handful of kids playing in the backyard. Abruptly, my son stops playing, looks around and runs over to a tree in the corner of the yard. He runs over, unzips and lets it fly. All in full view of his aunts and uncles. When he's done, he looks up sees everyone laughing. He was not happy about that. My MIL, looked at me and casualty remarked, I see you've raised him right. 20 plus years later, our son still squirms when we tell that story.

You must seek to restore your spirit to a state of tranquility after having been agitated by the work of the evil one. Do this by thinking of the spiritual rest which our souls should always have in God's will, wherever his will leads us. My daughter, live in this valley of tears for as long as it pleases God, with total submission to his holy will. We are very much indebted to divine goodness for making us so fervently live and die according to his pleasure. My daughter, let us trust that our great Savior, who gives us the intention to live and die in our enjoyment of him, will give us the grace to live that way

202 Democrats always roll out the gun control lie after any event. The fact is gun control has been shown to never work.

Posted by: vic smith at May 29, 2022 06:02 AM

No, but the "gun control" *narrative* always works. Otherwise Democrats would stop rolling it out. Not to stop violence or shootings, mind you, but rather to demonize conservatives and indoctrinate the narrative into general public to make it the default opinion of the public.

The best question to ask is why "Republicans" in House and Senate have never easily exposed the lie to the narrative years ago, simply by pointing out the massive "gun violence" deaths in "gun-control" cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Baltimore, D.C., San Francisco, etc.

The answer is obvious to me now. Republicans are part of the Deep State and just Democrats with an "R" next to their names and don't give a damn about defeating the Left on anything. Because most of them are Leftists themselves.

No it doesn't. Hasn't in some time, which is why the Dems want to use "executive actions" because gun control has never been more unpopular.

Look at the map of concealed carry laws. Two decades ago, how many states had Constitutional Carry? Now how many do?

They push it because they have nothing left and all they can do is try to gull the wine moms. They also live in a Twitter bubble and think 80 percent of the country wants taxpayer funded abortion to the moment of birth.

They're totally delusional.

230 DISGRACEFUL: Giants manager REFUSES to come out for anthem until he 'feels better' about America's 'direction'
"Every time I place my hand over my heart and remove my hat, I'm participating in a self congratulatory glorification of the ONLY country where these mass shootings take place," Kapler said.
By James Anthony; Montreal QC; May 28, 2022 1:17 PM

On Friday, Gabe Kapler, the storied athlete who currently manages the San Francisco Giants, refused to attend the singing of the national anthem at Friday's game in protest after the school shooting in Uvalde, Tex. on Tuesday.

For Friday's opening game, only seven of the San Francisco Giants staff and players were out in the field for the playing of the United States national anthem.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 29, 2022 08:36 AM

Sure it does. Have any Democrats or Republicans who have pushed "gun control" laws been punished for doing so? Nope. Crenshaw is still in office despite pushing for red flag laws. No Democrats are voted out for pushing lies about "gun violence" or pushing "gun control" laws.

There's no down side to it. The goal of any leftist narrative is not to solve any problems, it is to demonize conservatives and push the narrative to indoctrinate the public until that narrative comes to be public opinion.

Just look at anything else they have done over the past few decades. LGBTs, "gay marriage", gender dysphoria, "climate change". Every single issue the left pushes starts out as "oh no one is ever going to believe that" and "no one supports that, it's not popular". And yet, every corporation and institution in the world now pushes everything I just mentioned.

The narrative is pushed not for the people, but to get corporations and institutions to enact it.

Serious question. Was it commonplace in USA B.C (Before Covid) for people to not visit family and friends if they had a cold?

I have gone to work with colds, played softball games with a cold, went about my everyday life normally with a cold. I simply told people during the few times I have had a cold that it would be best to keep their distance (i.e. no hugs or shaking hands) as I am dealing with a cold.

Now it seems like if anyone gets the sniffles and "tests positive for COVID", they treat it as if they have some massively infectious disease. When it's always been a virus/disease with a 99.9% survival rate.

270 Now it seems like if anyone gets the sniffles and "tests positive for COVID", they treat it as if they have some massively infectious disease. When it's always been a virus/disease with a 99.9% survival rate.

My daughter is an RN. She tends to be conservatively cautious towards me in that 4egard. Her mother doesn't get sick. In March of 19, I came down with what I'm convinced was the vid. I tested negative but was sick for about 3 weeks. It was very similar to a bout with pneumonia I had about 4 years earlier. I threatened to visit my grandkids last week. My daughter politely asked me to not be the dad she knows and loves.

271 Happy Sunday, morons! I finished stocking up on canned goods this week because of your advice.

Without a basement or a garage, stashing it was a puzzle. All the 2023 expiry cans are in the kitchen cupboard. The rest are in weird spots like the linen closet.

It's also not Veterans' Day, it's Memorial Day. Which is to honor those who have died, not to thank or celebrate those who currently serve. The latter is the purpose of Veterans' Day.

That said, in my opinion, every day is good day to thank a veteran for their service. But I think too many people confuse the purpose of Memorial Day with Veterans' Day.

My daughter and SIL had the JJ vaccine. Both because of our asshat Gubner, for employment reasons. Neither of them has gotten a booster. Nor are they willing to.

280 So did Kamala Harris wish everyone "enjoy the long weekend" this year as she did last year? Not mentioning Memorial Day or its purpose at all and just posting a picture of herself.

281 So what goes on in the stands at these baseball games when the national anthem plays? Do half the people sit or turn their backs or ignore it and laugh and drink beer?

284 The """nonpartisan""" Brennan Center. Freaking out about wartime emergency presidential powers claimed by President Bush.

With Congress unable to serve its constitutional role as a check on the executive branch, there remains the possibility that modern PEADs, like their historical predecessors, sacrifice Americans’ constitutional rights and the rule of law in the name of emergency planning. Congress should pass Sen. Ed Markey’s REIGN Act, which has been incorporated into the Protecting Our Democracy Act and the National Security Reforms and Accountability Act, to bring these shadowy powers to account.
