The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Many diseases can be spread through sexual contact. You could get a cough or a cold through sexual contact, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a sexually transmitted disease,” WHO adviser Andy Seale

Quote II

“I thought it was going to be an ocelot, a wild dog or something else. The moment I saw the animal was that size, I ran back.”Rodrigo Almeida

Quote III

“[When] it comes to the gas prices, we’re going through an incredible transition that is taking place that, God willing, when it’s over, we’ll be stronger and the world will be stronger and less reliant on fossil fuels when this is over,” Joe Biden

Wishing something to be true, doesn't make it so. Fucking idiot.

Well that didn't too long.

An angry Joe Biden conjured up first-hand 'hollowness' of losing a child in his remarks about the deadly Texas school shooting: 'like having a piece of your soul ripped away'

The bodies hadn't even cooled.

I can't speak for you or even the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum. But my curiosity would have made do a better search.

DOLLY DUPE I found a ‘body’ stuffed under a bush in the woods – only for police to discover it was a dumped sex doll

A FAMILY phoned the police in terror after finding a suspected murder victim in the woods - only to realise it was an abandoned sex doll.

Vikram Dawson, 36, had stopped driving to have a wee when he came running back to the car in shock after spotting a naked body face-down.

I'm surprised it lasted this long. Good-bye pay phone.

It’s the end of an era: New York City removed its last public payphone on Monday.

The boxy enclosures were once an iconic symbol across the city. But the rise of cellphones made the booths obsolete.

The effort to replace public pay telephones across the city kicked off in 2014 when the de Blasio administration solicited proposals to reimagine the offering, the city’s Office of Technology and Innovation said in a news release.

Officials selected CityBridge to develop and operate LinkNYC kiosks, which offer services such as free phone calls, Wi-Fi and device charging. The city began removing street payphones in 2015 to replace them with the LinkNYC kiosks.

The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

Here's Why You Shouldn't Actually Make Your Bed First Thing
The perfect excuse.

Our beds are our safe haven. There’s nothing like coming home from a long day and snuggling under a duvet. We spend several hours in our beds each day, which is why it’s essential to make sure our beds are clean.

For most people, making their bed each morning is part of keeping their bed clean and tidy. But apparently, we shouldn’t be making our beds at all.

TikTok user @sherifelsahly caught our attention recently by saying we should never ever make our beds in the morning. Our beds attract dust mites and making your bed first thing in the morning will allow them to keep growing, he said. “But if you keep your bed unmade it exposes the dust mites to light and fresh air which actually helps kill them off,” he added.

LOLGF!!! You voted for this shit. Deal with it.

Unable to afford the daily commute, lower-paid contractors for Alphabet’s Google Maps business are revolting against a compulsory return to office work in Seattle.

According to a report in The New York Times, roughly 60% of the more than 200 employees at outsource firm Cognizant have signed a petition refusing to comply with a requirement to be in the office all five working days from June 6. As of that date, they will no longer have access to work systems from home.

“Gas is around $5 per gallon currently, and many of us in the office are not able to afford to live close to the office due to our low salaries and the high cost of housing in Bothell,” they wrote, referring to a city in the Seattle metropolitan area where Cognizant has an office.

Can adults who have a powerful position learn empathy you teach old dogs new tricks?

Training for Phoenix police officers is about to go high-tech. A new immersive virtual reality training by a Scottsdale-based company is now available, and those in the Valley will be among the first to roll out the service to officers.

Axon, which makes body cameras and other law enforcement products, says the new training should help officers better develop de-escalation and critical thinking skills. The company said that the Phoenix Police Department is among the first agencies to roll out the service.

How it works
Using virtual reality, Axon says trainers and trainees can be deployed in any environment that allows officers to train as often or as little as needed. Simulator Training says the training puts officers through “immersive, real-life” scenarios that require them to use their expertise and de-escalation training and apply it. After the session, which lasts about 10 to 20 minutes, the platform can analyze an officer’s performance and show them what additional training is needed.

Holy Shit! Genius Award Winner.

A septic tank driver dumped a load of waste into a stream so that he could go home instead.

Kyle Maitai, also known as Kyle Archer, poured between 4000 and 6000 litres of the waste into the Orini Canal; a watercourse home to indigenous fish and a habitat for indigenous birds near Whakatane.

Judge David Kirkpatrick reserved his sentencing decision in the Environment Court today after Maitai earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of discharging contaminants onto land which may result in contaminants entering water.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council prosecutor Adam Hopkinson told the court how Maitai was working for Whakatane Brownfreight on May 17, 2021, and had just picked up two loads of septic waste from Ruatoki.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to Virginia Morrison’s residence Sunday regarding a “burglary in progress.”

32 I applied for a job writing software for one of those police simulator companies. They were located somewhere in the Phoenix area, but it wasn't Axon. Interesting stuff; they had more than just screens, there was a gas piston thing that went in the gun to simulate firing and all the shoot/no-shoot video stuff was spliced together to be as interactive as possible. That one is near the top of the list of jobs I'm disappointed I didn't get.

ha, well, I do no-till, so it is not a big problem. Most of my crop ground used to be pasture, organic matter is OK. But still, a sizeable rain after planting can leave a crust over the top. In tilled ground it can be much worse .. and they might do light tillage over the top to break the crust (especially if it gets hot and sunny and makes a hard/thick crust).

I'm getting a rain now, just five days after planting, they are barely starting to emerge. Should be good conditions for emergence. "Grow and multiply little seedling, and all your 140K per acre friends."

Sure they are! Its well established fact that when dinosaurs die, their compatriots gather, find a real deep part of the ocean, say, two miles from the surface then dig a grave a mile or so even further - then lay their buddy to rest. And they do this over and over again for billions of years.

Any reading of history says otherwise. Humans mass up to enjoy the benefits of economy of scale, then kill each other as fast as they can use that collective effort to make stone maces, wooden bows, bronze or iron or steel swords, or guns with which to eliminate their perceived enemies.

We have always done this, and we always will. Eventually, we'll use lasers. Or go back to instigating pogroms resulting in mass hangings like the Salem Witch Trials. Or worse. Its what we do. Human nature hasn't changed.

183 IMO a big problem for us is that today's news press is made up of about 98% Democrats from top administration, to talking heads, to reporters, to staff. It's been that way for at least a couple of generations now. They only hire their own, ignore others with different outlooks on life.

What if 98% were Amish? KKK members? Or any other single group with specific views? A less than honest and complete view of the day's events is the result.

The point is that there is NO balance in what is reported and broadcast day after day after day. I say this after looking at the Puget Sound Democrat Party Gazette, aka, Seattle Times has reported since that shooting today.
Yes, it's the leftist tripe one would expect to hear, ban guns, etc, etc.

"Public Service Company of New Mexico has received approval from the state's Public Regulation Commission to develop new solar projects to replace the 114 megawatts of power it will lose after the expiration of two leases in 2023 and 2024 with the Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona. Utility officials warn that the commission's delayed response means solar generation will not come online in time to cover peak summer demand in 2023."

235 Any reading of history says otherwise.

What has changed in the last few years especially is the horrendous ignorance of responsibility expected in people's actions. It used to be if you did something stupid or evil, that person was dealt with, immediately, severely, sometimes permanently. Not any more.
Start there when discussing "history".

267 >>Jackstraw, moms might have put moms into jobs, but inflation has trapped them there.

I don't know if I'd say trapped but certainly cemented it. I was part of the last stay at home mom generation but even then women were demanding to get into the workforce on a much more equal basis than just the typical jobs that were open to women back then. The word "equality" was ubiquitous for jobs and pretty much everything else. And the economy and society changed to accommodate. That's not a value judgement it's just what happened.

When I was a kid there were few female CEOs of any note. Now they are leading companies like GM and Pepsi. That wasn't because of the need for two incomes, it was women wanting equality in the workforce. Well, truth be told they wanted more than equality but that's a different discussion.

But yea, with the structural changes and now skyrocketing inflation pretty soon the dog will be working too. No turning back now.

Shout no all you want. Now, find an era - just in American History, lets make this problem small - where these things don't happen regularly. You won't find one.

Only the details change. It won't always be guns, of course. It'll be bombs. Hell - it'll be militias crossing into other border towns and butchering every man, woman, and child leading up to the Civil War.

Hence the lunacy of banning guns. The same people will just use swords. And certain governments will thus try to regulate the carry of swords. Then the same people will use big rocks.

Man is a collective - and the collective always exhibits certain behaviors, on a scale large enough that it makes history. Hence, those behaviors, on a scale large enough to be noted in the macro, are indeed "human nature". As much as a herd of any other animal - say cows - will exhibit certain collective behaviors even though every cow isn't doing that particular thing at any given moment.

My challenge still holds. Show me the era - simply in American History - where these individual acts didn't manifest on a regular basis. Hell, I've shown multiple instances where the acts were collective.

But, sure, this kind of thing isn't baked into the cake of Human Nature. Humans are noble. OK. Got it.

307 Our gDaughter had me for companionship today after I had spent the dates of her previous two visits assisting my mother during her final decline and passing, and, boy, did she put me through my paces! There were multiple short excursions around the neighborhood and our yard, works of art constructed of wood and stone, weeds dug up, small ground critters observed going about their business, earthworms dug up and admired, and other childhood amusements. For all this I was awarded with the high honor of being named "best grandpa ever!"

It's a typical thread, in all honesty. I'm talking about what people do, and have always done. Other folks are talking about what they wish people had done, and what they ought to do.

The Left sees Man through a lens of The Handmaids Tale. The Right sees them through a faded Norman Rockwell painting. I see a story where there are no good guys - Mad Max meets The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

History says there are very few good guys. But a ton of guys that, once they win, take a firm hand in the writing of history.

333 "Anomaly."

Look it up.

When the "anomaly" continues to occur, decade after decade, it's no longer an exception. It's the rule.

Philosophically, though, your argument is right next door to those you supposedly hate - the Liberals. They think Man is fundamentally good as well, it's just the tools that lead them astray. So they want to remove the most lethal tools; guns. Because, without guns, Man wouldn't be able to follow his worst impulses and kill in mass quantities. Problem solved.

Except that's bullshit. Because man will just use swords. Or bombs like back in the Michigan bombing. Or they'll mob up and hang a bunch of people like in Salem. Or do another Kansas border war. It's just what Man does.

A dirty fact about a lot of software companies is they hire a crap ton of contractors to do the less fun, rote scutwork. The total benefits packages for the full timers is often 2.5-3x what a contractor gets for doing the same or harder work. Making contractors pay for their own bus passes is the least of the disparity.

345 Think of a frozen lake. The ice is clear because it freezes from the top down. With that big lake bottom and all that above-freezing water below it.

The secret to the kits that make the cubes, is to create a micro-lake, a mold of say, four, cubes, propped off the bottom of a sixpack sized foam cooler, the top thrown away.

Stick the whole thing in the freezer.

Or if no mold, just fill the cooler, no top, stick the whole thing in the freezer, stick in freezer overnight, take out in morning, and the top inch and a half will be a block of clear ice, with water below, ice around the perimeter next to the cooler walls. Take the whole thing out and use a serrated knife and mallet to chop cubes.

We did, if we're talking collectively as Americans. More to the point, mostly a collective of various white folks that fled Europe - and I'm one of the poorer parts of that diaspora.

Of course, if those folks had failed in their initial efforts to colonize, the native Indians would have rolled over them and took all their shit worth having. Again, not a story with a clear white or black hat. Glad my ancestors won. I feel no guilt or debt in that.

355 Gaga, by chance I just got some large spherical ice cube molds last week. I've tried 1) twice boiled tap water, and 2) twice boiled distilled bottled water - in an attempt to get clear cubes. Version (2) was semi-clear, definitely better than (1). But not what I'd call "clear" ice cubes.

Any comments/suggestions? I was really surprised the bottled/distilled H20, boiled twice, didn't produce clearer outcomes.

Mostly rum here. Aged, better stuff, all styles (Spanish, English, French). But just so happens I just got a bottle of Frey Ranch 100-proof rye, from NV. I've tasted it once at a friend's (he's got some work going in NV).

Very nice. Not your everyday stuff, $$$-wise. But I jumped on a free shipping offer from a very well stocked liquor store up in the LA area to get the Frey Ranch, and a few hard-to-find rums, almost every item cheaper than locally or at Total Wine, whose prices are of course hard to beat.

384 Oil is not dead dinosaurs or plants. There are no fossil fuels.

Sure they are! Its well established fact that when dinosaurs die, their compatriots gather, find a real deep part of the ocean, say, two miles from the surface then dig a grave a mile or so even further - then lay their buddy to rest. And they do this over and over again for billions of years.
Posted by: Reuben Hick at May 24, 2022 10:39 PM (AHeqJ)

Coal is absolutely a fossil fuel. Ten minutes with a microscope, and you can see the cellular structure and wood grain for yourself. Oil never came from dinosaurs, or macro plants. Single-celled plants and animals, in the ocean, that died, settled to the bottom, and became ooze that was incorporated into the next generation of rocks. Petroleum has molecular fingerprints consistent with living origin.

Sure, God is bigger than evil, and maybe the masses are "generally good". Bible talk would say all men have sin nature, BUT they can choose a better way. (free will, individual sovereignty)

"For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:" Romans 2:14

Sin Nature ... ?? Bible says man by nature can do the things contained in the law. imo this is a big theological issue. Even with "sin nature", man knows right from wrong.

Physical/metaphysical. The Carolina Hurricanes are bigger and faster than the NY Rangers and yet the Rangers lay waste to them today because they are good and the Hurricanes are evil.

Everyone is a sinner yet not everyone is evil. Everyone has goodness but not everyone is good. There has always been this duality, that is human nature. On balance man is more good than bad which is why we have progressed instead of destroying each other. That's not to say that evil doesn't win battles, they do all the time. But it hasn't won, not yet anyway.

If man was perfect we wouldn't need commandments or laws to set limits. We are imperfect, that is our nature. But we aren't evil. Other than the Carolina Hurricanes and the Yankees.

Consequences mean nothing whatsoever, and they don't learn from mistakes because as far as they are concerned, they never make them. I'm still awaiting the case that points out that we prohibit "cruel AND unusual" punishment. Not "cruel OR unusual" punishment.

Drawing and quartering? That's cruel, but not unusual. There are lots of examples of it in history.

Or twenty hours of community service, to be spent singing hymns to the cats at the local Humane Society? That's unusual, but not cruel.

Maybe it's cruel to the cats if you have my singing voice.

Both should be constitutional, if you're a textualist.

My son is one of these people. I'm rather hoping that military academy pulls his ass out of it, but I'm not at all sure his brain can be fixed. None of the shrinks thinks so. Psychopathy is hard wired, not subject to manipulation, although sometimes the psychopath can be convinced that it is in his best interest to NOT act out in the worst ways.

He is 16. I kick him out when he's 18. He will not be able to fend for himself, and he will break into my house and steal everything that can be sold and probably some that can't. This is inevitable.

He has has the best shrinks, the best schooling, I even home-schooled him during Covid, but to no avail. He goes to confession weekly, and confesses, but does not amend. I love him, although usually I don't like him. Not sure what else I can do.

Yes, "gourmet ice machines". They make them. You'll spend several thousand dollars at the least.

It uses the icicle method. Notice how clear icicles are? The freezing is down from the inside out. Liquid water runs down, some of it freezes, making the icicle a little bigger. More liquid runs down.

It thus freezes from the inside out, in layers. The allows all the trapped gases to escape.

The gourmet ice machines use this same principle. Liquid water flows over the top continuously and freezes in layers. The designs can get get complex.

Buy large containers of spice seeds/pods as they last longer and have a mortar and pestle or two lying around.

You can make your own mustard with ground mustard seeds; just add water or honey for honey mustard. I use ground mustard seeds and add some water and honey to make honey mustard in small batches; honey makes it milder. Fun fact: The hot mustard you get for dipping those egg rolls into in Chinese restaurants is Coleman's Mustard powder with water added. Just let it sit out (covered) a while for the full 'heat' effect. Still can't figure out how that goes from yellow mustard powder to grey-ish mustard, though, but it does.

These things will have gourmet ice machines. But not those low class commercial looking things. In the the main drinking and smoking room, nice wood grain Victorian finish and all that, they'll have one built into a ornate wood cabinet near the bar area.

I've recently been watching some YouTube videos on psychopathy. Brain scans seem to be able to tell if one is a psychopath as the amygdala does not look normal. What I found interesting is that not all psychopaths become serial killers, some become high-functioning CEOs or low-functioning politicians.

But, yeah, psychopathy is more nature than nurture although some studies suggest bad nurturing might have some effect when it comes to whether a psychopath becomes a serial killer or a CEO, but the jury's still out on that one.

532 Interesting tie-in with asperger's. Aspies don't necessarily know how to properly act in a given situation, but they do want to act properly. The psychopath needs the external motivation. The psychotic (the other psycho-) is simply detached from reality. Then there's evil, which wants to act badly. You can bargain with a psychopath. You can't bargain with a psychotic. Evil doesn't want to bargain.

Oh yes, not all psychopaths become killers by a long shot. Look at the list of professions that pyschopaths gravitate toward. CEO is the top of the list. TV news is another one. So is politician, lawyer, and cops.

The opposite is high empathy, and there's a list of professions there.

Doctors are interesting. Doctors, in general, fall in the high empathy range. Except for surgeons. They are psychopaths.

There is much confusion over the psychotic vs psychopath. Psychotic is bat shit crazy -- delusional, out of touch with reality.

A psychopath is simply one whose brain doesn't have the empathy circuits working. There is also confusion over sociopath vs psychopath, and actually those terms aren't really hard diagnoses, actually technical terms. They use other terms now, and there is a spectrum.

A pyschopath is just a human being who has no empathy, or no conscience in general. It's all about cold-blooded self-interest. This trait we call empathy is necessary to keep us from being, well, psychopaths, which is bad for the species in general.

Without empathy, you are capable of acting in pure self-interest. No qualms about destroying others for your own gain. Take what you want. Use others without conscience. Etc, etc.

539 I posit that neither Fairbairin nor Sykes were psychopathic, yet both were expert and proven killers.

Even to being employed by the predecessor of MI5, to train early WWII agents to effectively KILL opposition soldiers, without hesitation. I teach a similar thing, in that anyone interested in self-defense shooting ought first to learn to become an effective hunter, and processor of slain game.

Prove me wrong!

No doubt. That's sort of like how mob hit men aren't classified as serial killers, well, except for Roy DeMeo. Killing for a job is killing for a job and usually requires some desensitizing training (see the US military).

540 I have all of the empathy circuits firing, always.

But can still mag-dump as needed. Feeling sorry for the poor SOB who failed the decision/action matrix complex, all the while.

Feelings matter little, when life and breath are on the line.

When I was in college, as part of some damned pysch class I had to take, we all had to take a pysch evaluation thingy, detailed.

I was blown away, as I registered off the charts on empathy. One of them was I damn good at identifying emotions from facial expressions. So good, I pegged the scale on the test. I would've needed a higher end test to distinguish it.

I thought was bullshit, and said so. Then the prof just laughed and started telling me things that he would guess I was like, based on those results. He pegged me to a 'T'. Blew me away.

And believe you me, someone with high empathy can turn into a cold blooded killer. No, hot-blooded killer. If your sense of justice is riled up, look out.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 25, 2022 03:03 AM (Mzdiz)

542 publius, I agree there is a spectrum when it comes to psychopath vs. sociopath. But the best short-hand definitions I've read are that a psychopath can make hard decisions (which is why they can make good captains of industry) and usually has no fear; a sociopath uses people to get their desired goal (and why they make good con men). Both can appear charming and neither has much empathy but sociopaths seem to be lacking in that to a greater degree.

Supposedly 1 in 100 people are psychopaths while 3 to 5% of the population can be classified as sociopaths. There is the theory that certain traits of psychopathy helped humanity survive and thrive.

I didn't word that the best in the world, about the spectrum. The way I've heard it described, as far as brutal crimes is this:

Sociopath: Goes out on a date. Girl reminds him of his mother, whom he hates. She says something triggering. He goes in blind rage and brutally kills here, carves her up etc. The crime will be spontaneous, unplanned, and will be a sloppy mess. Any attempt to cover it up will be poor and haphazard.

Pyschopath: Decides to carve up some girl for some reason. Crime will be well thought out, perfectly planned and executed, with all sorts of details worked out. He will be a cool cucumber. He could run into a cop after he stepped away from the crime scene, and be cool as a cucumber, and artfully deal with the situation.

550 publius, now you're getting into the area of organized vs. disorganized killers. Serial killers can be both types, sometimes in the same person, like Ted Bundy. At first, he was highly organized but by the Chi Omega murders, he was very disorganized. Israel Keyes is an example of an extremely highly organized serial killer.

A short-hand for the distinction between the two is organized killers plot out their killings (Bundy and his prepped VW bug, eg.) while disorganized ones kill targets of opportunity (Jack the Ripper).

One of the Substackers I got to reading with this Coof/Vax mess is Matthew Crawford. He uses the term "kunlangeta". That is an Eskimo word for psychopath. Well, what we know recognize as a pyschopath. The kunlagneta were people who lie, steal, murder and rape without conscience.

Crawford likes that word for some reason. His thesis is that our elites are kunlangeta. The Deep State, Davos/WEF, political ruling class are kunlangeta. Psychopaths who have risen to the top.

The crave nothing but power and wealth, and have no empathy, and will gladly subjugate humanity for their own pleasure.

588 The local Sam's Club, usually the best gas price in the region, had premium at over $6 two days ago. Regular was $5.69, for now.

If I really had to, I could walk the 2.25 miles to the nearest supermarket and back, if I started getting in more walking to work my way to handling that. Much of the trip is NOT a good place to be on foot though. The real trick will be bringing refrigerated or frozen items home while they're still good. Walking home large amounts of frozen/cold food on hot days is a pain. What I use, for smaller amounts, is a soft-sided 6-pack zippered 'cooler' I can carry in my pack/put into my cart and into which I toss a pre-frozen small gel pack. At least things aren't melt-y when I get home. Also works for fresh seafood in any weather. If you have a bike with a basket, a smallish hard-sided cooler would work (with that gel pack again), just strap it down with a stretchy band with hooks (like I have on my luggage cart).

591 One aspect of these shootings has been preying on my mind. It was noted that the shooter in the FL Parkland high school attack had numerous confrontations with police in his past but no record of the sort that would have possibly prevented him acquiring the gun he used. This was attributed to a police that had been promoted by the Obama administration: if there is no arrest record, the juvenile crime stats look improved! Yay! We lowered juvenile crime but not really.

The same policy was cited as being a factor in Trayvon Martin receiving the non-punishment of a suspension from school.

More recently, the Buffalo shooter was known by the police after threatening to attack his school, yet had nothing on his record that prevented him from obtaining his gun.

On the surface, the claimed reason for this policy is that a juvenile record drives up recidivism by making more difficult for the juvenile to turn his life around. As stated above, the more likely reason is to create the illusion of improved numbers. What if that isn't the only goal? What if they're knowingly creating human time bombs in pursuit of creating a setting to push through the laws they've always wanted?

What is it, 40,000 or so people die annually in car accidents? I'm not sure how far back, in years, one would have to go to come up with 40,000 people dying of random gun violence (excluding suicides). Even gang murders are really a different category, too, as they are just as deliberate as suicides.
