The Morning Rant: Globalism’s Gift To America – Mutual Assured Scarcity

It looks like global scarcity and starvation are going to be defining features of the 2020s. And thanks to all the globalists here in our own country - who were successful in destroying America’s self-sufficiency - the US is now guaranteed to suffer along with the rest of the world.

Forget, “Mutual Assured Destruction.” We’re now in the era of “Mutual Assured Scarcity.”

The Age of Scarcity Begins for the Global Economy [Bloomberg – 5/19/2022]

Fault-lines in the world economy are deepening as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s Covid Zero lockdowns disrupt supply chains.

Do you remember how the big selling point of unilateral, unreciprocated “free trade” was lower prices for consumers?

Although Principled Free Traders™ were transparent about the cruel pleasure they derived from seeing blue-collar Americans lose their livelihoods (“Learn to code, deplorables”; “Move, hillbillies, your jobs aren’t coming back” ) they always professed that they were motivated by the goal of lowering consumer prices. Every American job they could ship to China meant lower prices for those Americans who hadn’t yet lost their jobs!

But now the shelves are empty and prices are out of control. That is not what consumers were promised.

We are helpless here in America because of the damage wrought by our own globalists. American farmers being able to feed the country is a national security issue. But US tractor manufacturers can’t even supply enough tractors to our farmers now, because we allowed even that critical facet of national security to be controlled by China and its sphere of influence, which also includes pretty much all trans-Pacific shipping.

The tractor shortage is bad and getting worse.

There are no microchips available for tractors which means many factories are shutdown or limiting supplies.

And by the way --- another casualty is in the midst --- tractor batteries are now in low (or zero) supply in certain areas.

While I genuinely believe that a primary motivation of the Principled Free Traders™ who inflicted this situation on us was their globalist hostility toward the sovereignty of the United States, malice is not the only problem. At the elite schools where they learned to think of themselves as world citizens rather than as Americans, they were poisoned with an education that taught them that weakening America and strengthening our adversaries would bring about universal peace and prosperity.

We cannot let these people cause any more damage. Donald Trump’s America-first, anti-globalist agenda was prescient, but still too late to roll back all the damage done before his presidency.

Mutual Assured Scarcity leads to Mutual Assured Starvation. If globalist politicians in the US believe we must face shortages and hunger here because the rest of the world is dealing with shortages and hunger, then our politicians should not be surprised when hungry citizens start expressing their anger in uncivil ways, as in Sri Lanka right now.

Strangely enough, Democrats are effectively defining themselves as the “The Party of Scarcity.”

John Nolte made some interesting points in a recent Breitbart article.

This is what happens when you give Democrats political power. You see, above all — unless, of course, you’re an illegal alien — Democrats believe in scarcity. Less is what Democrats believe in. Less for everyone. Less energy, less water, less speech, less housing, and (unless you’re an illegal alien), less baby formula.

The “green energy” fairy tale and the climate change agenda will make scarcity a way of life if not stopped, with an accompanying diminution of freedom and our standard of living.

To save this country from Mutual Assured Scarcity and the global pathologies that are unfolding, the Republicans need to fully embrace an America-first agenda that rejects the globalist agenda.

Anti-scarcity is not only a winning political agenda, to maintain peace and prosperity in this country it will require political leaders who embrace American self-sufficiency.

I've never made watercress soup. But I'm not about to throw fresh produce away unless it's dying.

Last night, I told the spouse I wanted him to find the oldest protein in the freezer to have for dinner tonight. Somehow, that was Steakums, so the soup for lunch seems like an even better idea, too! 29 The problem is, free trade became synonymous with "conservatism". It really did get to the point where someone talking about tariffs was like someone advocating socialism.

Part of the move towards Free Trade was, organized labor was a political enemy (something like 99% of their donations went to the Dem Party) so if you destroy domestic manufacturing, you hurt your political enemy.

The Dems eventually liked Free Trade because they worship globalism, hate America, and their liberal Tech Donor class wanted it. If some deplorables lost their jobs also in the Rust Belt, that was a nice added bonus.

Gotta say, I'm seriously not looking forward to the return of a "plow" being a sharpened stick pulled by a woman because we don't have the parts, or critters, for anything more advanced. Along with the obvious reduction in food production, apparently stick plowing doesn't get deep enough into the soil to reach the iron-rich layer so the food produced will be less nutritious as well.

You all know I think a 'red wave' GOP won't do jack shit.

I will be interested to see just how far Stinkfinger's cabal takes this monkeypox shit. I do not think elections would be cancelled - it would take mutual nuclear exchanges for that to be considered without inciting riots, IMO - but I do think there will be lockdowns once again, beginning in the bluest of blue states as 'test cases,' with mandated masking and shutdowns if the blowback is minor.

And, if that, then a shutdown of polling places and push for nationwide mail-in voting, to show that 'our democracy will not be paused, even by public health emergencies.' And I am not expecting a 'red wave.' I expect the Dems to narrowly win, through massive cheating, and once again the country shrugs its shoulders and mutters, "We'll get them next time!"

69 The entire structure is anti-abundant as a direct result of its monomaniacal commitment to efficiency and the lowest possible price. The consequence is a loss of robustness in all things.

How it used to work was having lots of suppliers for any given thing. If you need, say, car radio antennas, you can get them from, say, five suppliers are prices ranging from $1.50 to $1.62 each. In the old days, you'd buy from all five suppliers at a blended average price of around $1.56. You're paying six cents more for the antenna than you need to, but you have tremendous robustness in terms of availability. If you lose one of those five suppliers, you'll live through it. You'll probably live through losing three of them.

But it's inefficient. You have to manage more contracts and you pay a bit more per unit. So instead, just put all of your orders in to the top two on price, or even just the top one. Cheaper, and less robust. Now expand that out. The antenna manufacturers aren't buying steel from seven companies and microchips from three, they're buying from one or two firms - and both antenna manufacturers are probably using the same suppliers, too, so upstream trouble hits everyone.

76 Gotta say, I'm seriously not looking forward to the return of a "plow" being a sharpened stick pulled by a woman because we don't have the parts, or critters, for anything more advanced. Along with the obvious reduction in food production, apparently stick plowing doesn't get deep enough into the soil to reach the iron-rich layer so the food produced will be less nutritious as well.

In general, I think the late 90s and early aughts were a golden age in cars. They weren't all that pretty, but they were mechanically very sound and efficient but also didn't have tons of computers in them yet. They were well-built and the mechanical things like engines and transmissions and power window motors and the like were extremely good and very reliable, but they could also still be fixed and kept running reliably despite not needing tune-ups to any significant degree. Just enough electronics to keep everything running like a good watch, and not enough to get in the way.

Blackstone, according to economic website Investopedia, Blackstone possess the world’s largest amount of assets under management (AUM), and was considered the world’s largest warehouse landlord in 2021 – which was a growing trend due to the economic fallout that began in 2020, where companies began snatching up warehouses to better adapt to supply chain shortages.

‘Blackstone, the world’s largest private equity firm, invests in nearly everything in the global economy: biomedical research, digital payments, autonomous robots, power plants, motel chains, dating apps, and a slew of amusement parks including SeaWorld and Legoland,’ Private Equity Insights wrote, discussing the firm becoming the largest warehouse manager.

The formula was offloaded from the military C-17 into FedEx semi tractor-trailers and taken to the Nestle distribution center in Plainfield where the company will do a standard quality control check before distributing the supplies to hospitals, pharmacies and doctor’s offices, according to an administration official on-site.

124 Is this post fully, carefully thought through?

We've gotten in trouble when the Chinese state has interfered with global markets to lock up certain industries---such as rare earth. Globalization + bad actors = precarious dependence. I imagine the US state could intervene to subsidize (again, for example) rare earth excavation state-side, or put tariffs on foreign imports.

But, the baby formula instance is on where the US market was almost locked to US suppliers. There was "self-sufficiency", like Throckmorton wants: tariffs or outright bans on imports of perfectly good formula. But that ended up with a precarious dependence on a major supplier, in Abbott.

Seemed like such an obvious ploy to gather even more data on us. And just too irresistibly valuable to law enforcement to remain private.

The problem is that they only need a small percentage of the population's DNA to have the ability to determine the DNA for the rest of - something like 10%? It's how they ID'd that old serial killer in Los Angeles, and there will no doubt be so many new and exciting ways to use the data, including establishment of the biomedical state.

That's reciprocal free trade among peers, which I also support. I am opposed to asymmetrical free trade. If you're allowed to sell your cars here, I'm allowed to sell mine there. If your companies can do business in my country, my countries can do business in yours.

For the most part, our trade relationship with Canada is essentially open and reciprocal. Fine, and its to our mutual benefit (some exceptions like softwood lumber and the like aside). With places like China, though - where our firms cannot do business (it must be a joint-venture), there is no intellectual property, they use slave labor, etc. - should *not* be a recipient of free trade rights.

But, the baby formula instance is on where the US market was almost locked to US suppliers. There was "self-sufficiency", like Throckmorton wants: tariffs or outright bans on imports of perfectly good formula. But that ended up with a precarious dependence on a major supplier, in Abbott.

The single biggest shock I've seen is in trailer prices of all things. We got a cargo trailer a couple of years ago and were a bit butthurt to have to shell out ~7k when they'd been ~4-5k a year prior to that.

Today the same model is about 16k. Other large equipment we're ordering with multi-month lead times are all going up ~5% per month. Buying stuff early has been the best return on any investment we might make, even factoring in depreciation. And utilizing credit even when we have the cash outright has been a no-brainer, the loan rates just don't keep up with inflation.

This backward state usually gets them out if ordered on line in about 3-4 days, so I get my moneys worth on the postage. Advanced states like Pennsylvania would carefully scrutinize the order between breaks and you would receive them a month after expiration.

216 At the elite schools where they learned to think of themselves as world citizens rather than as Americans, they were poisoned with an education that taught them that weakening America and strengthening our adversaries would bring about universal peace and prosperity.

They want Chinese primacy, specifically, which is obviously bad. But I won't argue that it's worse than America in the leadership role. Might even be better. Who knows?

In any event, it won't be us. Country's tapped out. Horde of Visigoths out front shoulda told ya.

My preference would be for a coalition of China's enemies to devastate them and become the focal point of geopolitics. As we become a Chinese suzerainty, that would obviously be bad for us, but hey - people get what they ask for.

I asked my mother what she used and I got this simple formula that pretty much everyone around the globe used. Other than a penchant for posting here, I turned out all right.

All my kids breastfed exclusively except my 3rd - he went 6 months exclusive, but then I had to have emergency surgery and 10 days of recovery where my mom and sis cared for him and he was on formula. He flat refused to even take a bottle from me for a month after I got him back (he was probably ticked about the food change), so the spouse got a crash course in bottle feedings til my 3rd switched to real milk at 12 months (and his own sippy cup)...needless to say, the spouse realized how much damn work it is to feed a baby with bottles, let alone the energy that breast feeding entails...

Exactly. The Buick's battery failed in Aug. of '20 without warning, so I called AAA. He arrived and got the car started, we moved it into some shade, and he went ahead with the battery swap. All while wearing a stupid face diaper. I told him he could take it off, but he said his company insisted and that they actually checked up on their personnel (!). I brought him a tall glass of ice water and gave him a tip as well. Everything worked fine afterward and has for almost 2 years now.

In the before times RVs were about the fastest depreciating assets on the planet. It’s a light weight one that can be pulled by a standard truck and with gas prices, that makes it al that much more in demand now.

Since my kids are at the age where being with their parents is the worst thing on the planet, I think I’ll sell it since it is getting used less and less. So I will have used it for 5 years and ’ll make a profit on it. What a world we live in.

249 >>Those of you who say just breast feed...If it were that easy women would do it.

It's in part a problem created by women in the workplace. Get women to believe they must work, that it's both unaffordable and horridly patriarchal to stay home, and then the hospitals provide free samples of formula. Working full time along with breastfeeding and/or pumping around the clock is exhausting, and formula is an easy solution. I went through this, as well as complications while breastfeeding, so I am not being a judgmental jerk -- it's a valid and easy choice under those circumstances, even when you are not forced to due to allergies, etc..

So, after fast-tracking women into this choice they are being treated like jerks for not breastfeeding. This is so tiresome. Decades of feminism (and Leftism, in general) have created these s and then the canned response from the social media idiocracy is: so just breastfeed, lazypants!

No, the factors that led us to moms being dependent on formula is more complex than that.

This is why Nestle has earned much well-deserved opprobrium for what they did in Africa. They went in to various poor parts of Africa and ran big campaigns about how formula is superior to and cleaner than breastmilk, and they would give you a couple of weeks' worth or a month's worth when you gave birth. If the mother used it, she'd quit producing and then they learned just how expensive baby formula is once Nestle was selling it to you instead of giving you some out of the kindness of their hearts.

282 This is why Nestle has earned much well-deserved opprobrium for what they did in Africa.

That would have been a good idea - but the soup was great as is, and the youngest would have killed me, b/c I make Steakums so infrequently (and he loves them) that my spouse could say they were the oldest with a straight face.

I do have vidalia onions and baby bellas to saute for the steak sandwiches (mine sans cheese) - now to decide what goes with them other than the kiwi strawberry salad I have planned (I was thinking of taking the easy way out and just baking a 3lb bag of sweet potatoes which is about 1 per person here)...

302 263 I read last night that there is a supply chain issue for wet cat food. Now we are really in trouble. If kitties don't get their wet cat food (with extra gravy) they really will take over the world.

the other interesting thing is that after the stuff was "resupplied" cats had new reactions to it, so there might have been some formulation changes during the "drought"?

anyway my cat suddenly became allergic to pretty much everything - the wet food, the kibble, the treats! I have him on prescription food for a while now and everything is clearing up really well - and like the babies with allergies/resistance, now that he's better he is SLEEPING which is wonderful.

after the doc says we can add to the z/d food (which i HOPE never runs out of supply!) I will start trying raw diet with him. it will have to be unique proteins tho so I'm looking at rabbit, kangaroo, venison, stuff like that. because the proteins he was getting - he's allergic to all of them now

I've enjoyed watching Peter Zeihan's videos, although he's getting lost of mileage from a few relatively simple points, and is prone to dramatic overstatement. I suppose it brings in the consulting dollars. Anyway, he argues that China is now on its last legs, demographically, economically, and culturally. He has literally predicted that this could be China's last year. That's patent nonsense, but he does have some interesting points about their impending demographic collapse.
