The Morning Rant: Globalism’s Gift To America – Mutual Assured Scarcity
It looks like global scarcity and starvation are going to be defining features of the 2020s. And thanks to all the globalists here in our own country - who were successful in destroying America’s self-sufficiency - the US is now guaranteed to suffer along with the rest of the world.
Forget, “Mutual Assured Destruction.” We’re now in the era of “Mutual Assured Scarcity.” The Age of Scarcity Begins for the Global Economy [Bloomberg – 5/19/2022]Fault-lines in the world economy are deepening as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s Covid Zero lockdowns disrupt supply chains.Do you remember how the big selling point of unilateral, unreciprocated “free trade” was lower prices for consumers? Although Principled Free Traders™ were transparent about the cruel pleasure they derived from seeing blue-collar Americans lose their livelihoods (“Learn to code, deplorables”; “Move, hillbillies, your jobs aren’t coming back” ) they always professed that they were motivated by the goal of lowering consumer prices. Every American job they could ship to China meant lower prices for those Americans who hadn’t yet lost their jobs! But now the shelves are empty and prices are out of control. That is not what consumers were promised. We are helpless here in America because of the damage wrought by our own globalists. American farmers being able to feed the country is a national security issue. But US tractor manufacturers can’t even supply enough tractors to our farmers now, because we allowed even that critical facet of national security to be controlled by China and its sphere of influence, which also includes pretty much all trans-Pacific shipping. The tractor shortage is bad and getting worse.
There are no microchips available for tractors which means many factories are shutdown or limiting supplies. And by the way --- another casualty is in the midst --- tractor batteries are now in low (or zero) supply in certain areas.While I genuinely believe that a primary motivation of the Principled Free Traders™ who inflicted this situation on us was their globalist hostility toward the sovereignty of the United States, malice is not the only problem. At the elite schools where they learned to think of themselves as world citizens rather than as Americans, they were poisoned with an education that taught them that weakening America and strengthening our adversaries would bring about universal peace and prosperity. We cannot let these people cause any more damage. Donald Trump’s America-first, anti-globalist agenda was prescient, but still too late to roll back all the damage done before his presidency. Mutual Assured Scarcity leads to Mutual Assured Starvation. If globalist politicians in the US believe we must face shortages and hunger here because the rest of the world is dealing with shortages and hunger, then our politicians should not be surprised when hungry citizens start expressing their anger in uncivil ways, as in Sri Lanka right now. Strangely enough, Democrats are effectively defining themselves as the “The Party of Scarcity.” John Nolte made some interesting points in a recent Breitbart article.
This is what happens when you give Democrats political power. You see, above all — unless, of course, you’re an illegal alien — Democrats believe in scarcity. Less is what Democrats believe in. Less for everyone. Less energy, less water, less speech, less housing, and (unless you’re an illegal alien), less baby formula.The “green energy” fairy tale and the climate change agenda will make scarcity a way of life if not stopped, with an accompanying diminution of freedom and our standard of living. I bought a 50 cent watercress bundle that my 2nd one (who loves watercress) didn't eat. It's looking iffy for raw, so I'm making watercress soup for her, me, and whoever wants it today.
I've never made watercress soup. But I'm not about to throw fresh produce away unless it's dying.
Last night, I told the spouse I wanted him to find the oldest protein in the freezer to have for dinner tonight. Somehow, that was Steakums, so the soup for lunch seems like an even better idea, too

The problem is, free trade became synonymous with "conservatism". It really did get to the point where someone talking about tariffs was like someone advocating socialism.
Part of the move towards Free Trade was, organized labor was a political enemy (something like 99% of their donations went to the Dem Party) so if you destroy domestic manufacturing, you hurt your political enemy.
The Dems eventually liked Free Trade because they worship globalism, hate America, and their liberal Tech Donor class wanted it. If some deplorables lost their jobs also in the Rust Belt, that was a nice added bonus.

Gotta say, I'm seriously not looking forward to the return of a "plow" being a sharpened stick pulled by a woman because we don't have the parts, or critters, for anything more advanced. Along with the obvious reduction in food production, apparently stick plowing doesn't get deep enough into the soil to reach the iron-rich layer so the food produced will be less nutritious as well.

I think I recall a story a few years back about Nissan bringing back the economy Datsun brand, but only in 3rd world shitholes. The new Datsuns are tech-lite. No chips, any mechanic with a rudimentary understanding of fuel, compression, spark can keep them running. Seems like a good idea for tractors everywhere.

There are *used* tractors available, many of which are old enough that they don't have any stinkin' chips. They might not have power steering either, and I doubt parts will be easier to find to buy, but it might be easier to *make* replacement parts than for recent models.

The other day I web searched for baby formula plant closed. FEB this plant 'voluntarily' shut down. There was some *whistleblower* who testified to congress or crony buddies that the plant was not following all the FDA guidelines.
Now Abbott labs may be like the HW portrayal of evil corporations and went "Well, if the workers don't like how we were running things we'll just shutter the plant and see how they like no jobs" But even if so, why did the government wait 10 weeks until all formula inventories were gone to decide to cut some red tape to allow importing formula and even to work with Abbott labs to say "hey we need you to produce X tons of formula per week what are the road blocks, maybe we can remove some of them"

Just in time delivery has to take some of the blame. My daughter, who used to work for TJMaxx's home company, said any of the lower end clothing stores that DIDN'T practice JITD are now gone. It was a cost, in a very low margin business.

If what you are waiting for isn't deemed mission critical you leave without it and hope to get it later.

Just about anytime an appliance goes out, it's the microchips. All so the consumer can save 2 cents a month. The older ones before microprocessors would easily go decades.

Gotta say, I'm seriously not looking forward to the return of a "plow" being a sharpened stick pulled by a woman because we don't have the parts, or critters, for anything more advanced. Along with the obvious reduction in food production, apparently stick plowing doesn't get deep enough into the soil to reach the iron-rich layer so the food produced will be less nutritious as well.

They weren't all that pretty, but they were mechanically very sound and efficient but also didn't have tons of computers in them yet. They were well-built and the mechanical things like engines and transmissions and power window motors and the like were extremely good and very reliable, but they could also still be fixed and kept running reliably despite not needing tune-ups to any significant degree. Just enough electronics to keep everything running like a good watch, and not enough to get in the way.

I have yet to get any sort of credit notice but I get registered sex offender news all of the time. No idea why that is part of the credit monitoring service though. And you can't turn that part of it off.

Batteries are batteries, with a lot of the raw material being the same. I expect just conventional car batteries to skyrocket. I'm taking the car for an oil change tomorrow, and it dawned on me the battery is about three years old, some of that time baking in AZ. Might as well change that early seeing how I'm doing the oil change early.

I registered my boat over the weekend for 2022. I was hocked at the price. It was the same as 2021. I found the one thing that has not been affected by inflation. Mind you gas to operate the boat is 75% higher but that’s a different story.

Had to buy a new battery for my Tacoma, the old one crapped out after 6 years. Close to $250 for the top of the line battery with a full three year replacement warranty plus tax. $20 core charge that I got back when I took the old one in.

The single biggest shock I've seen is in trailer prices of all things. We got a cargo trailer a couple of years ago and were a bit butthurt to have to shell out ~7k when they'd been ~4-5k a year prior to that.
Today the same model is about 16k. Other large equipment we're ordering with multi-month lead times are all going up ~5% per month. Buying stuff early has been the best return on any investment we might make, even factoring in depreciation. And utilizing credit even when we have the cash outright has been a no-brainer, the loan rates just don't keep up with inflation.

This backward state usually gets them out if ordered on line in about 3-4 days, so I get my moneys worth on the postage. Ive seen some home made recipes for baby formula online. It’s not being actively pushed by the msm for a simple reason. As always follow the money. If everyone figures out how to make their own, they will stop buying it from Target and Walmart at a 200% markup. And tht cannot be allowed to happen.
I asked my mother what she used and I got this simple formula that pretty much everyone around the globe used. Other than a penchant for posting here, I turned out all right.

All my kids breastfed exclusively except my 3rd - he went 6 months exclusive, but then I had to have emergency surgery and 10 days of recovery where my mom and sis cared for him and he was on formula. He flat refused to even take a bottle from me for a month after I got him back (he was probably ticked about the food change), so the spouse got a crash course in bottle feedings til my 3rd switched to real milk at 12 months (and his own sippy cup)...needless to say, the spouse realized how much damn work it is to feed a baby with bottles, let alone the energy that breast feeding entails...

Actually goat's milk is what they give babies that can't handle cow's milk. It's naturally homogenized and seems to cause fewer problems with allergies. And you can get canned goat's milk, although it's not cheap.

But, the baby formula instance is on where the US market was almost locked to US suppliers. There was "self-sufficiency", like Throckmorton wants: tariffs or outright bans on imports of perfectly good formula. But that ended up with a precarious dependence on a major supplier, in Abbott.

I've enjoyed watching Peter Zeihan's videos, although he's getting lost of mileage from a few relatively simple points, and is prone to dramatic overstatement. I suppose it brings in the consulting dollars. Anyway, he argues that China is now on its last legs, demographically, economically, and culturally. He has literally predicted that this could be China's last year. That's patent nonsense, but he does have some interesting points about their impending demographic collapse.

Exactly. The Buick's battery failed in Aug. of '20 without warning, so I called AAA. He arrived and got the car started, we moved it into some shade, and he went ahead with the battery swap. All while wearing a stupid face diaper. I told him he could take it off, but he said his company insisted and that they actually checked up on their personnel (!). I brought him a tall glass of ice water and gave him a tip as well. Everything worked fine afterward and has for almost 2 years now.

I own a travel trailer. It is 5 years old. I can sell it for more today than I paid new for it. For a fucking RV!!! In the before times RVs were about the fastest depreciating assets on the planet. It’s a light weight one that can be pulled by a standard truck and with gas prices, that makes it al that much more in demand now.
Since my kids are at the age where being with their parents is the worst thing on the planet, I think I’ll sell it since it is getting used less and less. So I will have used it for 5 years and ’ll make a profit on it. What a world we live in.

Regarding tractor chipsets and tractor batteries. It's not that long ago that tractors were made that had no chipsets, and no electronics besides simple lighting and battery-charging circuits. This is all within living memory. It would not be impossible to retrofit all those "smart" tractors with mechanical fuel injection pumps, and manual controls. They will get the job done. As for tractor batteries, a bank of four or six standard auto batteries ought to crank a tractor. There's more than one way to crank a Cat. Or a Deere.

I'm not a biologist but I think if you went with formula for whatever reason, your milk dried up within a couple of weeks. Moms can't just revert now that baby formula got hard to buy.

I saw Steven Miller (Trump's speech writer) talking about the formula issue. It's not just a matter of keeping the child alive. It's finding a formula they can tolerate and will let them sleep. And after months of trying different formulas, you find one that works. Only you can't buy it any more. He obviously knew what he was talking about, as he has young kids.

This is why Nestle has earned much well-deserved opprobrium for what they did in Africa. They went in to various poor parts of Africa and ran big campaigns about how formula is superior to and cleaner than breastmilk, and they would give you a couple of weeks' worth or a month's worth when you gave birth. If the mother used it, she'd quit producing and then they learned just how expensive baby formula is once Nestle was selling it to you instead of giving you some out of the kindness of their hearts.

If nothing else perhaps the formula shortage will bring a bit of clarity about things to those people who've had their heads up their asses since the junta took over. Anyone still thinking "things will work out" is in for a massive disappointment, sooner rather than later.

Producing milk from cows or goats is labor intensive. The animals have to be milked twice a day with no time off. They require hay and grain to make good tasting milk. Goats can live on brush, but you won't find the milk very tasty. You really should stock up on whole powdered milk. Peak is pretty good, but Walmart carries the Nido brand, which is cheaper

263 I read last night that there is a supply chain issue for wet cat food. Now we are really in trouble. If kitties don't get their wet cat food (with extra gravy) they really will take over the world.
the other interesting thing is that after the stuff was "resupplied" cats had new reactions to it, so there might have been some formulation changes during the "drought"?
anyway my cat suddenly became allergic to pretty much everything - the wet food, the kibble, the treats! I have him on prescription food for a while now and everything is clearing up really well - and like the babies with allergies/resistance, now that he's better he is SLEEPING which is wonderful.
after the doc says we can add to the z/d food (which i HOPE never runs out of supply!) I will start trying raw diet with him. it will have to be unique proteins tho so I'm looking at rabbit, kangaroo, venison, stuff like that. because the proteins he was getting - he's allergic to all of them now

The best powdered milk (imho) is called "Mix 'N Drink" and it is made in Wisconsin.
We (being fully grown adults) rarely drink milk anymore, but occasionally need it for baking or oatmeal, etc.
It has doubled in price in a year.

OT: could use a prayer. Just tendered my 2 week notice. I work on the road (last 5 years) and it has been tough for the wife. She’s a good woman that has been holding down the household and caring for her mom. She’s at a breaking point and need to be there. I’ll find something.

They really don't compete. Electric car batteries are lithium-ion. Tractor cranking batteries are lead-acid. It would be ridiculously easy to ramp up (re-start) domestic production of lead-acid batteries. None of the components are hard to get.

We had the same experience. Our cat started vomiting after we opened a new bag of the "same" brand of cat food she had been eating for over a year; then she wouldn't eat it. She became deathly ill and finally recovered after $500 in vet bills and switching to a sensitive digestion wet food for a couple months. Manufacturer denied that there had been any changes to the formula nor any complaints.

As do the millennials who think owning a suburban home is racist (yes really) and destroys the environment, so they live in a cramped apartment instead.
