38 Been reading The Vikings by Fergusson. Slaving was a very profitable business. Fergusson cites Dutch traders making 600% on a quick trip to North African and back to Amsterdam in the mid 500s AD. The Vikings saw that and cut out the middle man and just went out and got free slaves to sell. Its Math!

39 Interesting painting. The darkness and tragedy of the scene contrasts with the brighter areas. This work doesn't use the realism of most of Turner's scenes, which I enjoy. But he gives the impression of death and turmoil.

blow it up, and you'll see it's a stylized shark and other sea creatures eating the body of a slave that's been tossed overboard. Turner wasn't going to literal realism, he's going for horror. The horror also shows up in the color palette of the entire painting; reds, oranges, yellows, browns and black. The color palette of fire, destruction, and terror.

those little loops in the foreground were the ropes and/or shackles attached to the legs of the slaves.

Turner's critics during his life always said much the same, without realizing that he was anticipating the entire continental Impressionist movement by 20 - 30 years.

That "pillar of light" representing the sun is a Turner motif. There is often a vortex of some kind, dark or light, present in his works. It's rather fascinating once you learn to look for it. "Hannibal crossing the Alps" is a great example.

Posted by: Tom Servo at May 23, 2022 09:51 AM (r46W7)

I watched the Schama (sp?) episode on Turner recently. It's about this painting. Basically Turner was frustrated by whar he considered too slow of change and did what progressives do so often. Taking an historical incident, that had caused horror and been the basis of huge social change, and acted like it was a common and recent thing and that nothing had improved.

Not too surprisingly, those working for complete abolition (his allies) were the most offended and those who didn't care about abolition just thought he'd lost his marbles.

155 This is a fantastic painting. The violence of the technique echoes the violence of the act that is being shown. During the Trans-Atlanic Slave Trade, slave ship owners took out insurance on their "cargo" and were compensated for loss. If any disease started to make its way through the slaves, the ship owners would just dump the whole load, get paid, and go back for more. Same if they encountered hurricanes, like here in the painting. Since the slaves were all chained together in one long chain, all the captain had to do was attach a weight to one end, dump it, and the whole bundle would follow. It didn't matter if the slave was alive or dead.

Turner is showing the drowning slaves fighting for their lives while weighed down and also being eaten by sea animals. The storm is thought to be metaphor for the whirlwind that slavery will reap on society.

Biden is just a less likable, more deranged version of Dubya, a political potted plant behind which authoritarians rule by witch hunt and moral mania, with Joe floating on a somehow even fatter cloud of media protection than Bush enjoyed after 9/11.

I don't think we should read too much into it as auguring a deal. Negotiations broke off a week or so ago (having been ongoing since near the start of the war) and Russia has been blaming Ukraine for this (likely because Ukraine has backed off on some things they were open to previously). And early on she got crap from the left for not being on the gay train.

But...she supported most of the left's agenda while in office.

Funny how ace's Pixy system, incredibly outdated and simple, manages to blunt the trolls' effect (along with some coblogger moderation) while the feature-robust commenting systems from facebook and Disqus don't. One might consider the ease with which these trolls can disrupt/destroy legitimate discussion is a feature, not a bug, huh?

To my folks, who were born and raised in southside Chicago, Orlando is Utopia to them, especially with their new house there.
And though they both enjoyed living in Cali and Hawaii (as did I), Florida is cheaper, and for retirees, it's paradise.

It's available in gourmet shoppes just not in Safeway and that crowd of stores. It used to be on the shelf with cooking oil. My wife's a yankee so I have yet to introduce saving bacon drippings for cooking and seaonsing.

Posted by: Joe Xiden at May 23, 2022 10:57 AM (3vQN0)

Nobody said we had to be prudes. Actively promoting immoral lifestyles and dismissing it as no big deal results in progressively move to more immorality and acceptance of same. We have always had human immorality but it was underground or kept private because of societal shame. Divorce is now like breaking up with your high school squeeze. No big deal.

368 Mark Twain. In his 1880 book A Tramp Abroad, Volume 1, Chapter XXIV, he declaimed:

" What a red rag is to a bull, Turner's "Slave Ship" was to me, before I studied art. Mr. Ruskin is educated in art up to a point where that picture throws him into as mad an ecstasy of pleasure as it used to throw me into one of rage, last year, when I was ignorant. His cultivation enables him—and me, now—to see water in that glaring yellow mud, and natural effects in those lurid explosions of mixed smoke and flame, and crimson sunset glories; it reconciles him—and me, now—to the floating of iron cable-chains and other unfloatable things; it reconciles us to fishes swimming around on top of the mud—I mean the water. The most of the picture is a manifest impossibility—that is to say, a lie; and only rigid cultivation can enable a man to find truth in a lie."

369 Apparently it is not the slave ship "Zong" in the background, the perspective is from the tilted deck of the Zong itself...hence the chained slaves having not yet sunk from the surface. (...surf,Ace.)
