Top Story

  • I have a house.

  • I ended up working until 2AM yesterday tracking down a difficult performance issue, then was doing house-related stuff until 4AM, then got up again at 7AM for a meeting, which was lots of fun.

  • A new plastic-eating enzyme could eliminate billions of tons of landfill waste. (UT News)

Normally this is a what could possibly go wrong item, but they're talking about an enzyme here, not bacteria or anything that can reproduce itself. Enzymes are catalysts - a small amount of an enzyme can process a large amount of raw material - but still finite and will break down fairly quickly.

    So... Good?

1 Apparently it was 1 degree above freezing at the new house at 7AM today. You can bet I double-checked that there's a gas cylinder already hooked up for the hot water.

4 My trick of using a 3/4 pipe as a sleeve than using a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer to get to 1/2 pipe worked, took a second easy soldering attempt, but the actual faucets are leaking when hot water is being used so will work for a little but it's days are numbered.

10 Morning and evening, folken!

Pixy, the house experience -- I've never done it yet. I'll be watching to see you navigate the pitfalls and delight in having a place of your own!

The enzyme to eat plastic sounds like a better idea than creating a bacterium for the purpose. In Larry Niven's Ringworld, his hero mentions that a bacterium evolved to eat polyethylene. "It was eating garbage bags right off the supermarket shelves. It's dead now. We had to give up polyethylene."

14 Oh -- and I dreamed that I went to a MoMe! It was held in an enormous barn-like convention center, with meeting rooms and hotel rooms upstairs. I don't recall any of my mind's-eye pictures of any of you, but in the dream I was aware that I was among Ace's Chosen. There was one woman, a sexy little brunette, whom I'd apparently known in person for a while, and we apparently had a tradition from earlier meetings of buying each other a little gift -- not a gag gift, but something nice. In the dream I was browsing the shops in the meeting center, trying to find her a gift I hadn't gotten her before.

Sorry if it isn't more salacious, but the alarm woke me. Darn!

15 "So... Good?"

Not really, there's no shortage of space for landfills. So the solution is in search of a problem, which inevitably means the problem will be regulated into existence to justify the solution. And then everyone gets to pay $5 more to pay for it.

Wow, what a horrible, stupid, short-sided idea. What if we need that plastic in the future? Hey, look, an easy, known place to mine it. Oh, I know. Let's destroy it instead.

It would be cool if it broke the plastic back down into a hydrocarbon. We could drill baby drill at former landfills. Well, some future administration.

21 And as Sjg mentioned in #15, this "running out of room" absurdity has been brought about by the exact same pig ignorance that believes black people are 52% of the population.

Using current techniques and with no advances in technology - lock it into place today, nothing, nada - the U.S. could maintain one (1) single landfill the size of Durham County, NC, and it would handle all of the trash that everyone in the U.S. produced for the next 100 years.

Idiots live in a make believe world, and we're governed by idiots.

Congratulations on being part of the landed gentry btw.

Leave faucets dripping if there's a freeze concern. Make sure everything drains if there's a flooding concern before you do. Covering spigots outside is fairly simple, but there's an elegant little screw on attachment that will take the place of those ugly covers if you prefer. It releases a few drips of water as appropriate below freezing temperatures, and IIRC fails open if it fails (which is a good thing).

And it's amazing how much heat the old incandescent light bulbs will give off if you can find them. Use them for spot heat if needed.

26 Well, I guess it's tech-related: Pooky's CPAP mask, no matter how many times he changes it, winds up leaking air at a steady rhythm or failing completely every 5 minutes. We're on the Philips Resprironics recall list and have been for about a year. The VA has no idea when we're getting a new one and refers us to the Philips recall number.

55 Robbie, the scientific publishing world is shady as fuck. You have the big for-profit journals which accept submissions for free, have rigorous peer review and censorship, but require costly subscriptions to get the content. Many government research grants require the results to be published in an "open access" journal. Costs money to submit the article, but access is free for all. Some of these have questionable peer review and will pretty much publish anything as long as the check clears.

I don't remember the author, but someone wrote a story about a bacterium that would eat oil. They thought it would be great to clean up oil spills. It was. It also multiplied and started in on everything else made or or with oil. Cars stopped dead in the road, planes fell out of the sky, clothes made of synthetic material would dissolve while wearing them, ect.

I've only come across it on my phone, it seems to happen if I click on the expand/comment before letting the page completely load, as if the Ad's boundries aren't correct until everything loads.

It's annoying, but a 2 second redirect, even 20 times a day, won't get me to leave a site, and if Ace gets some sponsor cash out of it, then good.

Sounds like something Larry Niven might have penned. Similar thing is back story in the Ringworld series where the Puppeteers, being fearful of what the Ringworld and its civilizations could pose to their migration, seeded the world with something that ate super-conductors.

88 On that enzyme.

The Chemical industry and research is going all out to have everything plastic recyclable. Lots of research, catalysts, and proceedures.

It could work in a small area like Europe. Or a city/state like LA.

But all that transport required is diesel fuel power. Recycling over any distance is a net energy sink. And the distance this occurs at goes down as the price of fuel goes up.

TLR. It is uneconomical, and we have better things ot do with the fuel.

89 The enzyme to eat plastic sounds like a better idea than creating a bacterium for the purpose. In Larry Niven's Ringworld, his hero mentions that a bacterium evolved to eat polyethylene. "It was eating garbage bags right off the supermarket shelves. It's dead now. We had to give up polyethylene."

There was a report someone after the election that actually went to India and talked to ther people who run the bots, about how they were purchased to boost Biden's (and company) tweets. They had a list of what would be tweeted, and what to respond to it from the 50 or so bots each ran. The owner of the company said they were paid through a dummy corp so he had no idea exactly who hired him, but the resort was about how this was basically against all rules of election spending, but unfortunately no one will track the money to see where it came from.

I went to LegoLand in NY and they have some really impressive and gigantic displays of various characters.

They do amazing work.

161 The sickness of collecting Lego sets is much like the sickness of collecting antique and vintage woodworking tools. But I don't display those, I use them sometimes on projects in my shop.

That F40 was the only Lego I've purchased in the last probably 25 years. I've been tempted by the Mustang and DB5, but again i think the price was so much higher (think the F40 was $100 and even then i only got it because i was treating myself after a lucrative job)

181 Read that the administration has invoked the war powers act to ramp up baby formula production. Who are they ordering to start making baby formula? Formula is heavily regulated, who can meet the requirements within days to make formula and get it shipped while they discontinue whatever they were making and that now becomes scarce. Who is getting a huge government contract to make formula that eventually will sit in a warehouse unused like ventilators?

They're just going to allow Abbott to open up its plant that's been ready for 4 months, but the FDA has been too lazy to go retest to see its clean. They're going to disguise lazy government workers actually doing their job, as Biden taking the lead and fixing this problem

>>Who are they ordering to start making baby formula?

What will happen is that the components that go into the formula will be prioritized for acquisition from any and all sources foreign and domestic and funneled to the four main providers of baby formula in the US and to get Abbott's factories back to production as quickly as possible.

You don't have a right to use somebody else's computer for free. The only thing complicating the Big Tech issue is that Facebook and Twitter at least are known to have had significant CIA funding and that complicates the question of whether they're truly private companies.

If Facebook can't ban you for not being a commie, then you can't ban people for filling the comments section with porn and spam.
