It is rare that I can improve on an Ace joke -- it happened once, in all the years I've been here, and Ace used it. But maybe again? Light sabers are the reason I could never get into Star Wars. Even as a kid, it was just insultingly dumb. Aside from the question of how they bounce off each other or how it stops or folds back on itself, just think how much more badass of a weapon ot would be if it didn't magically end 3 feet from the handle.
And then there's the total lack of imagination it represents. Lucas wanted characters based on samurai. Okay, cool, think of the awesome samurai space suits and zero-gravity martial arts that would mean. But no, just laser-swords. F'ing dumb. Posted by: Bandana Dee at May 17, 2022 07:45 PM (Uzh5E) 36

I do like how they had to put a warning on the last episode that pretty much said, "yeah, don't kill yourself after watching this please". Agreed on Cowboy Beebop (although I do not consider it the nee plus ultra of story telling some do.
* I think what does it for me is that it tells a story, and when the story is over, it ends. It's hard to find that any more. If something is successful it will go for years and get worse and worse. It's nice to have a story with a beginning, middle, and end. I'm guessing it came from a comic book originally so that made it easy. “Russia is preparing for a long-term military operation,” Reznikov told EU defence ministers and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “The war is entering a protracted phase,” he added in the speech, the text of which was published on his Facebook page. Haibane Renmei. The late Steven Den Beste said to just watch it without reading any reviews or knowing anything about it. He was correct. Noir. Older show. Assassin girls. Detailed enough that having the right sounds for particular handguns is a plot point. Gate. A portal to a "middle earth" type world opens in downtown Tokyo. Modern military vs dragons ensues. Violet Evergarden. Low-key stuff. What does a super-soldier do when the war is over? Mushi-shi. Very low-key. Episodic stories about a wandering witchdoctor-ghostbuster dude. Asobi Ni Iku Yo!, aka "Cat Planet Cuties". Sci-fi send-up with lots of gratuitous nudity. Posted by: mikeski at May 17, 2022 08:50 PM (P1f+c) 249

Posted by: Joe XiDen at May 17, 2022 08:55 PM (EzsIA) If you are a squish Republican who just wants a real R lite and not a complete D (like Oz), he'd be who you'd fall to, especially with the combo McConnell/Cruz endorsement. Oz lost his support, but he didn't split with Barnette, he seems to be giving it to McCormick. Barnette seems to have gotten undecideds to break her way to elevate but then stopped elevating - so, I think the late trade at the top was Oz to McCormick, not Oz to Barnette...but it's early... A "West German" spy has to infiltrate "East Germany" and set up a fake family, so he can get at the reclusive bad guy who only appears at his son's school functions. The spy manages to pick a telepathic orphaned kindergartener for his "daughter" and a professional assassin for his "wife". The joke is that dad and mom don't know what the other two really are. I sometimes think that the only reason the XO and I have lasted as long as we have is because we actually don't spend all that much time together. Over the years, our work schedules sometimes really conflicted. For many years, his work was very seasonal, and I would hardly see him between Easter and Memorial Day. Or I would have a job where I worked a lot of evenings. And I am a night owl while he goes to bed very early in the evening and gets up super early in the morning. A lot of notes have been left on the counter over the years.

Russians built fortifications in several places they've withdrawn from already in this war (near Kiev for example). It's normal for many situations. Down in Kherson I don't think anyone expects them to be moving much further anyway. From Moscow's perspective, the war entered a "protracted phase" in mid-March, if a quick/political outcome was desired. From Kiev's perspective, it will be as protracted as they decide to, or can, make it. More likely a deal, eventually.

Club for Growth (GOPe?) gave money to Barnette, most likely to split the MAGA vote between Trump's (crazy) pick of Oz the (mostly) leftist, and a real MAGA (but not known, not successful in her last campaign) pick like Barnette.
Why Trump didn't pick the white female option Carla Sands, is unknown. But maybe Trump will learn he can't just force his leftist candidate on the MAGA crowd. That only worked for four years of ... for instance, open border picks on border enforcement, and other failures. Yes, Trump was up against the DeepState in full force (Strzok "we will stop him") ... but imo the Jarvanka team was Manhattan leftist influence, and there were other unforced errors. idk, I could not fight DeepState ... and maybe Trump's base will come through in 2024, but demanding they accept Oz instead of MAGA is kinda like when he said he could shoot someone on 5th and Broadway and MAGA would still support him. (ummm. no, MAGA is not that in love with you, they love MAGA). Posted by: illiniwek at May 17, 2022 09:24 PM (Cus5s) 325

35 Light sabers are the reason I could never get into Star Wars. Even as a kid, it was just insultingly dumb.
I was like 14 when Star Wars came out. It was fun, the visuals were great for the time, but as far as the generational obsession and the delving into intellectual aspects of it and interest in endless sequels to explain more? As far as SF meatiness went, it was to even original Star Trek like Hannity is to Rush. Light sabers? Ok, fighting with swords and knives is much better for dramatic conflict than fighting with phasers or laser pistols, I get it, but at least in Dune the author invented a force field armour that stopped quick movements to explain why people with space travel technology fight with blades. Star Wars didn't bother explaining it at all. Posted by: azjaeger at May 17, 2022 09:37 PM (3/XaG) 351

Our elite are more than willing to sacrifice for the good of the planet. Trouble is it's our well being, not theirs being sacrificed
Posted by: Javems at May 17, 2022 09:35 PM (AmoqO) To be fair, there are so few of us elites, our sacrifices would do very little for Mother Gaia and are thus unimportant, but there are millions of you peasants, so your]/b] sacrifices are what is important for the planet. My mom bought me Lincoln logs, erector set, tinker toys ... awesome for a boy. Not sure what she was thinking when she bought me Hippopotamus ... girl hippo, boy hippo, roll dice to see who builds their hippo first? I don't remember ever playing it. They were not anatomically correct .. maybe that would have made it more interesting?
