The Drone War in Ukraine: Is This Going to be a Problem For US?

In every war there's some new wrinkle in tech and this seems to be that new wrinkle in this one.

I mentioned yesterday that the Ukrainians were having success in taking out Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers using consumer level quadcopter or octocopter drones, ranging in price from $10,000 to $20,000, and using them to drop fairly cheap munitions with such high accuracy that the effectiveness of the smallish explosives were greatly multiplied.

For comparison, military drones often cost $2 million. The US Predator drone costs $40 million per drone.

Here are some troops modifying a quadcopter to carry grenades. It's a simple operation that can be done in the field with, basically, fishing line and duct tape.

The munitions being dropped here include just a grenade being held in a clear plastic cup -- the cup, I guess, to keep the handle from springing out and detonating the grenade until it falls out of the cup.

This is some seriously technologically-asymmetrical warfare. Or I guess actually the drones are technologically advanced; they're just super-cheap.

Other munitions include dinky mortar rounds which have little effect as battlefield weapons, but when dropped from a drone with great accuracy, suddenly become very, very effective.

They also drop heavier rounds, but the drones can only lift so much weight, of course, so there's a limit to how big the bombs can be.

They modify munitions that weren't designed to be dropped by adding fins and fairings, some of which are printed on 3D printers to make them aerodynamic and stable as they fall. Another cheap add-on. (Beyond the expense of the 3D printer itself.)

I don't think that this sort of weapon was used against us in Afghanistan or Iraq, or at least not to any great extent.

Videos below of the great effect that these very tiny munitions can achieve. It should be kept in mind that the drones are, for all practical purposes, silent and invisible, so these attacks come out of nowhere, and are, in a way, "terror attacks," in that the enemy cannot anticipate them, and so has to worry that they can come at any time.

And there's really no defense against them. I guess a very sophisticated radar system could detect the drones, but platoons in the field don't have that.

It should also be remembered that tanks and armored vehicles have their weakest armor on their roofs so they are all especially vulnerable to attacks from the top. I mean, a tank wouldn't be vulnerable to a grenade, but it would be vulnerable to an attack from the top from a heavier mortar round it wouldn't normally be in danger from.

This is especially the case with Russian tanks, which have a very exploitable design flaw that allows their stores of shells and propellent explosives to be detonated from within the tank by a sufficiently powerful blast near the turret.

Here, a drone-dropped grenade kills three Russian troops firing on Ukrainian positions with an RPG. Killing three troops isn't such a huge thing, except... they were able to do this at virtually zero cost (just the cost of a single grenade) and zero risk. And they can just keep repeating this.

There's video of Russians attempting to catch up to the Ukrainians' drone warfare game but failing, so far. But I don't know if that's real video or more propaganda designed to make the Russians look stupid.

And it might also be that the Ukrainians came into the war with skill at using drone warfare because maybe the CIA had already drawn up the plans for using consumer drones as munitions delivery platforms and just told the Ukrainians how to do it. That would assume the CIA still knows what it's doing, which I doubt.

In any event, there is now a way for a very underfunded guerilla army to use dirt-cheap weaponry they buy off of Amazon to take out million dollar tanks and armored personnel carriers, which is something the US will have to worry about going forward.

US tanks are a lot better armored than Russian tanks, and US tanks don't have that lethal design flaw, but the general idea that a small drone dropping a smallish bomb right on to the top of a tank with terrific accuracy is going to be a threat for the US.

The US will be better able to adapt to that threat, because we'll be able to deploy automated roof radar and gun phalanx systems that shoot falling bombs out of the sky. But we will have to adapt and add those guns to tanks and APCs.

I suppose the US can just selectively turn off GPS positioning which would help blind these drones, or at least make it hard to guide them to targets over long distances. But only over long distances; a lot of their sorties are done just by eyeing the landscape through the videocamera, and over pretty short distances. So just shutting down GPS for the enemy (if we can do that, which I assume we could) would only be of marginal benefit.

41 I think drones are having a bigger impact (although less dramatic video) when used for targeting and reconnaissance. Used with artillery they are making dumb (unguided) shells much more accurate. The Russian appear to be using this same strategy since they are using a lot of them, but we don't know the details.

Combined with Satellite imagery they are making it very hard to hide or stay safe.

The drones are also able to drop those grenades into trenches, and trenches had been a pretty good defense against artillery and bombs. That is part of the terror aspect Ace mentioned.

50 I don't think they can turn off gps anymore, they can only degrade it and I'm fairly sure some sets can use more than just our satellites, at minimum you can get sets that use one of the other systems instead. During the "lull" in fighting after Crimea was taken, there was that big ammo dump over there that blew up was thought to have been caused by a drone dropping a rifle grenade launcher type grenade. In "peace time" here I suppose we can help secure our facilities with patrolling out to the likely range of the threat drones, though I'm sure thats going to have property rights issues with the citizens nearby. Seems like some sort of Electroninc warfare or jamming might be most effective but we have let our capabilities in that lapse at least as much as the russians. Plus that would probably have other issues maybe with interfering with other equipment or emissions exposure.

Apparently amusing things happen to car navigation apps when you are driving close to the Kremlin.

And all air traffic is banned over Moscow (inside the Ring Road). Any drone taking off over central Moscow I suspect would be zapped very quickly.

56 The thing about drones, even purpose built military drones, is their inexpensiveness in military terms. You can afford to lose a lot of them so you can attack in swarms. You can send in some to get detected by the enemy, while noting the locations of radars and AA defenses, and then try to degrade that capacity using other drones.

The DJI Drones don't need a Cell signal, My Phantom 3 I have used where i get zero Signal and the DJI produces it's Wi-Fi and the drone can travel 3 miles when I use it on the Beach and just see how far it can go out to sea.

70 Still, Ukraine's is not a guerrilla army, it is financed with tens of billions of dollars. For a genuine guerrilla army even tens of thousands of dollars could be a lot, so maybe they could only do it a dozen times. Suicide bombers would be cheaper.
And this assumes the guerrilla army is run by smart people, who see the value of technology and promote people with serious technical knowledge, in addition to mere ruffians and torturers. This may depend from case to case.
I guess the Mexican cartels are rich and drug dealers have used sophisticated technology in the past, such as submarines, so we'll see if they start adopting this.

72 Russian tank design philosophy is quite different from NATo and Israeli philosophy. They endeavor to keep their tank weights un 50 tonnes and their crews to 3 persons. This allows their tanks to cross inferior bridges which our tanks collapse.

To achieve these goals, they adopted ERA (explosive reactive armor) in the 1980's. Although hazardous to nearby friendlies, ERA has proven successful at protecting tanks without adding much weight. Russian ERA does, however, produce a white smoke explosion when it protects the tank and this is often confused with a kill.

The Russians did not cover the tops of their turrets with ERA tiles until the Trump Administration supplied the Ukrainians with top attack munitions. The Russians first tried slat armor, then tiled tank turret roofs with ERA.

The Russian tank losses are vastly overstated due to their usage of ERA. Many of the destroyed tanks identified as Russian are actually Ukrainian T-64 and T-72 tanks, which look quite similar.

They've already got a reasonably sized laser that intercepts incoming artillery and missiles reliably. Drones are slower and generally plastic, so that shouldn't be all that difficult, assuming you can get line of sight on them.

106 I think all the DJI drones require the DJI app to operate. The Phantom 3 (I have an "Advanced" model) doesn't require a cell signal that I'm aware of. The little tablet I was using with the controller did not have cell capability. IIRC it's signal between the controller and drone is sort of like a cordless phone in frequency. Range varies with topology.

The thing about the app is that it won't allow you to fly in so-called restricted areas (near military installations, airports, government buildings, sports venues, etc.)

my patriot maintenance platoon used to practice drone and uav defense with our ring mounted M2. all 38 of my mechanics coukd do it, hot swap the barrel and set the headspace & timing properly to boot. air defene units used to compete with each other by which was better at that. my platoon sgt and i would take the entire platoon out for skeet shooting at the rod and gun club the week prior. we always won that competition at Bliss when i was platoon leader as a CW2.

I could be wrong, but, drones and their operators depend on LOS RF transmitters of relatively low power and they tend to transmit on relatively narrow frequency bands. break the RF link, break the weapon. nothing like selective RF jamming. Commercial drones (RC planes) are susceptible to jamming/interference the farther they are from the controller. take down the drone or neutralize the operator. Computer assisted radio direction finding along with dedicated indirect fire (counter battery ie firefinder systems) will go a long way to take the fun out of using these 'toys'

I saw a pretty in-depth video that indicated that the new versions of the Russian cope cages are working much better than the old versions. It's why heroic Zelensky is already talking about a diplomatic solution. The facts on the ground are looking to be that Russia is getting what it wants while grinding down the Ukrainians.

The drone thing is overhyped. Cheap drones get easily jammed. So you have to start adding in autonomous actions. That's hard to do for a small drone. That's why the military drones cost more. Plus there are range issues. And finally, Ukraine is still losing.

251 On of the reasons this low cost strategy has worked is because of the ubiquity of the RKG3 grenades. These were a 1950's era anti-tank grenade, and they worked pretty well, with a shaped charge that will penetrate 125mm of RHA, but the problem with an anti-tank grenade is that you have to be close enough to the tank to throw it, which is a less than ideal circumstance, and why it was replaced by the ATGM.

But... the soviets made, conservatively, millions of them. So, there's a lot of them out there.

Soviet era tanks all used RHA armor, but the Abrams uses Chobham armor as well, though its not clear if there is any mounted on the top. So, it isn't clear if this would work as well against an Abrams. My guess is probably way less effective.

Obviously other vehicles such as the LAV, HMWV, and Bradley are more likely to be substantially more vulnerable.

If an RKG hits an ERA block it will generate a big explosion, but it might do zero damage due to being detonated prematurely. You really have to look for secondary explosions to determine effectiveness against tanks.

What would work though, is a 12 ga. Proximity Fuzed shell, with a small charge surrounded by #4 shot, for shrapnel. WWII saw the Proximity Fuse fitted 5" Naval Rifle shells, and 40mm shells. I'm fairly sure I recall reading somewhere that there's a .50BMG version, and if so, a 12 ga loading would be a snap.

Ballistics closer to a shotgun SLUG, so a hit at 400 ft. AGL should be doable, and even a near-miss, long as it's close enough for the fuse to detect the target, well, if it goes BOOM and the bird goes down, count that as a win.

(2) The main aggregator, ORYX has done a good job posting images of the vehicles which were destroyed. This allows for easy recognition, after all, both sides have identifying marks.

If you want a third reason, they mostly also operate different versions of the tanks, and a good expert can discern which is which.

The couple of hundred thousand troops assembled on Ukraine's border suggests that wasn't the entirety of the plan. I don't think the 40km lost convoy was ever any more of a problem than the sandstorm 'quagmire' that was similarly reported by US ADD media.

In any case, their was never a Russian narrative that they were going to capture the entire country. Putin stated his goals at the beginning: Secure the Donbas (largely done), denazification (Azov battalion mostly wiped out at the steel plant, remainder appear to now be in custody), and demilitirization (Ukraine militias continue being degraded into oblivion).

The BT2 is a nifty package that integrates very well into NATO comms, the problem is that its radar signature is larger than its physical size is due to design decisions, such as the non-retractable landing gear.

It's not uncommon for the ones that are shot down to have their ordnance still on board. Quite often, it's Tors that are knocking them down.

This argument never made sense in the context of what they actually did. Initially their main axis of attack was Kiev. They attacked through the Chernobyl region to link up with VDV and Spetznaz at Hostomel airport. They attacked from the Chernihiv axis, and from the Sumy and Kharkiv axis. They invaded from Crimea and headed west towards Mykoliav and Odessa. Their focus was to take Kiev, decapitate the government, put in their puppet and then the UAF would surrender en masse.

They managed to take Mariupol after a 7 week siege in which they lost several BTGs worth of men and equipment doing so. Other than that they haven't taken a single major population center in the Donbass. Sloviansk, Sevierdonestsk, Lychansk, Bahkmut, Kramatorsk are all still in Ukrainian hands. Russian logistics were failing when they were pushing towards Kiev. By pulling out (taking massive casualties in the process), and re-deploying to the Donbass dramatically improved their logistics for several reasons:

(1) The distances are much, much smaller. From Kadivika to the front lines near Popsana is like a 15km drive. From Gomel to Hostomel is like 250km.

(2) The shortage of trucks was alleviated by the use of railways. Russian used Kupyansk in the Izium axis to bring in supplies, which shortened the driving distance to like about 80km instead of 177km. They did the same in the DNR and LHR supply lines as well.

So, they had a big problem, they learned and fixed it.

I saw that story. I've also heard Russian soldiers claiming to have fragged their own officers, shoot themselves in the foot to get out of service, and stories that Kadyrovites are being used to shoot soldiers insufficiently "motivated" to fight.

I am sure there are isolated stories from both. I don't see a widespread issue in either force.

I hear you, having seen both but the frequency and the nature from the Ukrainian side looks to be changing for the worse, which is reflected by the rate of territory loss.

At first, the units were posting prepared statements to Telegram, where admins were deleting the videos. Then they started being posted to TikTok first before landing in Telegram.

And then we started to see the phone-shot videos of NCOs yelling at superiors.

323 In re: anti-drone tech: not all that long ago I saw one of those cheerleading arms company videos from Kalashnikov hyping an anti drone variant of the AK 47, which included a sort of EMP launcher or emitter gizmo, an entanglement round, other stuff I don't recall.
It apparently didn't work.

325 From experience: they're really not as silent and invisible as you'd think. Had them hovering over our house a couple times (called the cops... but the giant drug bust the following week on the next block over says it probably *was* the cops). Not the toy version, but the somewhat heavier-duty surveillance variety. They sound like a twenty-pound mosquito.

Uh, yeah, no. This isn't the sort of thing you'd get originating from the CIA, at all.

What is happening here is not a surprise to anyone who was aware of how much Soviet tech originated from Ukraine - including up until just a few years ago. These are smart, highly educated, motivated people fighting for their homes and families against a bunch of drunken conscripts. Not to mention anyone who paid attention to the recent Armenian/Azeri conflict.

Don't make the mistake of assuming the corruption and ineptness of both western and, sometimes, Ukrainian leadership will result in incompetence at the tactical or operational level.

328 A mortar shell already arrives from above when it's fired from a mortar, so the drone-drop is really more about accuracy and response time. And if those were AT grenades rather than mortar rounds like somebody said, then the drone is a huge improvement over needing to get close enough to deliver the thing.

Except (a) they haven't really been losing much ground. They've mostly fallen back to better positions. They held Lyman long enough to build extensive defences on the hills along the River to the south, the Russians are going to have a hell of a time moving towards Sloviansk from Lyman. They've lost a lot of ground near Popsana, but then they gained a bunch of it back in the last 24 hours. And they also gained ground near Kherson and Kharkiv.

And to supply one side with weapons implies there is, making the US an enemy of an already nervous nation. Zelensky is no hero of liberty; to believe that is to swallow the propagnda pill without reservation.
Stop pretending the Ukraine resistance will prevail because it will not, to support with gobs of US military equipment and intelligence only prolongs the conflict.
