Things change and the time’s changed. So, it’s important for me to figure it out.” Bill Murray Quote II For if Men are to be precluded from offering their Sentiments on a matter, which may involve the most serious and alarming consequences, that can invite the consideration of Mankind, reason is of no use to us; the freedom of Speech may be taken away, and, dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep, to the Slaughter. George Washington Quote III "We're starting to see this coordinated drip campaign. When I say a drip campaign, it's where they're going to drop an attack article every one or two days just to try and kill us by death by a thousand cuts, and that is really their main strategy," Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) What a lying twat. White House press secretary Jen Psaki insisted Friday that what Biden administration’s Homeland Security secretary said last week was a new effort from his agency was in fact a continuation of Trump-era efforts. Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed the existence of the Disinformation Governance Board with no references to the Trump administration, according to The Washington Post. “We have just established a mis- and disinformation governance board in the Department of Homeland Security to more effectively combat this threat, not only to election security but to our homeland security,” he said. Let's see, children and I mean children are competent to change their sex. But are not wise enough to pick a rewarding degree? Three Things The Country Needs To Do About Student Loans And College Costs The discussions about student loan forgiveness are still running hot. Given modern reality, it should be possible to understand why so many who have outstanding student debt think it should be erased. Too much debt in society is wiped away, mostly for the better situated, either through explicit forgiveness, mechanisms to reduce the pain, or convenient forgetfulness. As an example, Mediaite yesterday ran a piece about a Fox FOXA -1.9% cohost who once ran for the Senate in New York. The headline: “Jeanine Pirro, Whose Campaign Owed $600,000 in Unpaid Bills for More Than a Decade, Demands Student Borrowers Pay Their Bills.” Brutal but not completely accurate. Going to the Federal Election Commission’s page for her campaign and dropping down to the cash summary, ending cash on hand for her committee was $6,857. Debts or loans (and there was only one loan for $265,000 from the candidate herself) listed as still owed: $854,194. Worse than the story suggested. Perhaps her advice would come across more effectively if she had paid off what she owed.I don't have all the answers but I would start here: Private colleges with substantial trusts should have some skin in the game if they accept student loan payments. Let the Harvard's and Yale's piss and moan. High schools should be pushing vocational school degrees. There is money to be made learning a trade. I have more need for a LPN or welder than I do a Woman's Study major. There are plenty of professions which require a Bachelor's or a Master's degree that in my opinion do not require that advanced of a degree. Is TFG behind the new draconian free speech suppression? Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) thinks so. Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard suggested that former President Barack Obama is behind the effort to establish a Disinformation Governance Board, which she likened to George Orwell's famed "Ministry of Truth." "Biden is just a front man," Gabbard said on Twitter Sunday. "Obama, April 21: social media censors 'don’t go far enough,' so the government needs to step in to do the job. Six days later, Homeland Security rolls out the 'Ministry of Truth' (aka Disinformation Governance Board)." Money talks and Bullshit walks. The Wikipedia community just successfully pushed back against cryptocurrency. On Sunday, the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which owns and operates Wikipedia, announced that it would no longer accept cryptocurrency donations. The decision was made after a three-month discussion period that followed after a request to stop accepting crypto was made from the Wiki community.Warren Buffett doesn't believe in Bitcoin. Hey Yuri, what the fvck is wrong with my tractor? ***SNORT*** (CNN)Russian troops in the occupied city of Melitopol have stolen all the equipment from a farm equipment dealership -- and shipped it to Chechnya, according to a Ukrainian businessman in the area. But after a journey of more than 700 miles, the thieves were unable to use any of the equipment -- because it had been locked remotely. Hmmm. Who would have thought that BLM would be an organization of corruption? Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed a lawsuit against the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLM), seeking the organization’s compliance in a more extensive investigation into its use of funds donated by Hoosiers. In a release, Rokita’s office announced it “filed a Petition to Enforce a Civil Investigative Demand, which seeks an order requiring BLM to respond to a Civil Investigative Demand issued to the organization in February 2022.” RIP Naomi Judd. Grammy-winning singer Naomi Judd, who died at the age of 76 on Saturday, admitted to undergoing electro-shock therapy and considered suicide in recent years. Judd, the Kentucky-born singer of the duo The Judds and mother of Wynonna and Ashley Judd, died due 'to the disease of mental illness' according to a statement from her daughters. She told the Today Show in 2017 that after The Judds stopped touring, she didn't get off the couch for two years, falling into 'extreme' and 'severe' depression. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is probably set for life. I on the other am not. At this point in my life I can't use my real identity on Twitter if I were to be unbanned. Billionaire Elon Musk has revealed part of his plan for Twitter’s future if his bid to become its new owner is successful as expected. The revelation came in response to a tweet from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee who said that all users should verify their name and identity. “I hope @elonmusk will insist that all Twitter posters use their real names & not be keyboard cowards hiding behind silly little sophomoric screen names. Be man enough or woman enough (if you even know what that is) to stand by what you say! If you can’t own it don’t say it,” the former governor said. Let's hear it for EV buses!!! Dope dealers sure are creative. Pot peddlers are hawking their weed near kids as young as 10 — with some buds camouflaged to look like candy or ice cream cones — in and around several Inwood schools. On Thursday, The Post witnessed three different deals go down just as classes were being let out. One was on Thayer Street, a few blocks from the Amistad Dual Language School; a second unfolded on Academy Street, a short walk from PS 52; and the third was on the corner of Vermilyea Avenue and 204th Street, around the corner from Washington Heights Academy. “They’re all over – every corner,” Tatiana Mahoney, the director of Family and Community Engagement at Inwood Academy, told The Post. New York legalized recreational weed consumption last year, but selling marijuana is still prohibited. Has there been anyone in the legal crosshairs as President Donald Trump? I think not. Donald Trump must be the most-investigated real estate tycoon in the history of the United States. The fact that dedicated poetical enemies with vast resources at their disposal have come up with nothing is a testament to his probity. In a field notorious for questionable practices when it comes to seeking permits and dealing with rapacious inspectors of various stripes, Donald Trump evidently has kept his hands clean. Gun control to means being able to hit your target. A Texas mother fatally shot a man who broke into her San Antonio home while her children were inside, Police announced Friday. The woman, who remains unnamed but is reportedly in her 30s, was at home with her three children Thursday evening when she heard the man break in. The man, who also remains unnamed, entered the house from the rear through the laundry room. The woman grabbed a gun and shot him twice in the chest, according to KSAT News.Yes, a candidate for Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. A man has been arrested after reportedly trying to sell stolen goods to the public while they were gathered at a crime scene in Grimsby. The man - seen by witnesses with a large variety of meat - , was spotted trying to sell items on Lincoln Boulevard, off Cromwell Road in Grimsby. At the time, Humberside Police were at the scene of a major investigation where a man was arrested following a 12 hour roof top standoff. Following the carnage caused by tiles and bricks being thrown down on to the street, police sealed off the area and a cordon was put in place until the situation was brought under control. Today, it remained in place whilst Crime Scene Investigators collected evidence from the scene. Never too old to advance. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (WLOX) - At 101 years old, a Pass Christian military veteran has been promoted. Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Adams Jr. is now Major Adams. Adams said he served in the Air Force for more than 25 years and retired in 1966. During his career, he served in World War II, Korea and the Vietnam war. Adams explained he was on the verge of a promotion when he left the military, but once retired, he petitioned officials in hopes of finally getting that new, albeit honorary, rank. After many years of waiting, Adams can add another accolade to his resume. Family and friends filled Adams’ house in celebration while sharing their favorite memories with Adams. Bitcoin "mining" isn't mining. It's more akin to forgery. You waste a lot of effort to do a long and complicated calculation for the sake of showing that you have done a long and complicated calculation. You have produced nothing of enduring value.
Real mining takes something of value out of the Earth, and refines it into a product for which demand already exists. Be it gold, or copper, or diamonds, or even gravel, there is a market for it. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 01, 2022 10:03 PM (Q+k/j) 64

It's scored more like NASCAR's complex points system. You accumulate weekly points to earn a spot in the year-end playoffs. Then the top finishers there have to perform in the biathalon, the decathalon, and the dance contest for audience votes. No one has made it yet.

"Private colleges with substantial trusts should have some skin in the game if they accept student loan payments.
Let the Harvard's and Yale's piss and moan." Both Yale and Harvard would never let any student use money as an excuse not to go to the school - and that's good - but they should never, ever need to charge tuition to any undergrad that gets accepted there, either. With the billions that they have in their endowments, they could afford to pay for every undergrad that attends, no matter their ability to pay. And they should. The student loan thing, aside from being part of the long term prog destruction of society, is also several types of trap.
The most relevant one for all of the loan forgiveness thing is the loan nationalizations in 2009 that nearly everyone who wasn't a recent graduate, or about to graduate then, doesn't seem to know about. "You borrowed the money, pay it back per the contract" went right out the window as soon as Obama tore up the contracts and handed the debts to cronies. The resulting messes and now the infighting was intentional. It's not about people picking dumb degrees any more than face masks were about science or disease prevention. I actually have some aviation, regulatory, FAA news that's current.
So there's a youtube guy named Trent Palmer that had his pilot license revoked. He's appealing it though. The story is, he is a bush pilot and had a friend with a grass strip, out in the middle of the brush ask him to come over to land there. Well he flew over, did some inspection runs and decided that he couldn't identify a safe place to touch down with enough room to roll out so he flew back home. Shortly after he got a call from a ntsb/faa agent saying we would like to talk to you. Well turns out a distant neighbor of the guy with the strip didn't like that, and decided to complain. Trent claimed he followed the FAA rules for inspecting a potential landing spot. The FAA said it doesn't matter and the civil judge rulled against him. People are saying this could end being a bush pilot. And it looks like Trent was right so why did the judge and the FAA rule this way. Well that's related to 3 other things. (cont.) First thing: There's a guy named Trevor Jacob who's some low placed olympic guy who became a youtube personality and a pilot. In one video he goes up, he said to spread a friend's ashes over some mountain. Well oh no! his engine quits but he handily had a parachute right on him, because you know all pilots just happen to have a parachute packed and ready and a selfi stick and videoed himself jumping out of his plane. He then lands, goes to his crashed aircraft, and removes some recording devices and stuff. His video got a lot of hits. Well the FAA looked at the videos, especially the parts that were edited out, looked at the condition of the crashed aircraft and included that he did it all as a stunt. He violated regulations against endangerment of life and structure, which are pretty big regs and he had an emergence revocation, meaning you have hours to report to a representative and hand over your license so you can't fly anymore. So the FAA is seeing YouTubers do crazy shit. then the next thing happens (.cont) Posted by: banana Dream at May 01, 2022 10:45 PM (rWGyP) 174

I will answer that question with another question: if the value of your bitcoin crashes to zero, who do you shoot? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 01, 2022 10:27 PM (Q+k/j) Good luck with that one, never worked before and never will again. Look up the Austral. Oops, oh well, and the bankers are still in charge US dollars are created by loan origination. The banks write loans and then what is making it valuable is your work in paying it off. The FED covers the loan and only demands set interest, which the bank then uses to set their own. Raised interest rates don't destroy money, they just slow the demand for loans by making them more expensive to pay off, and by diverting money that would go into paying new loans off into paying off current loans. This is what a central bank does. Prior to the Fed, the money supply was set by Congress advising the Treasury to issue gold backed dollars, and they messed around with that by fixing the price of silver differently than market spot, and issuing bonds through legislation to industry: generally canals, navigation improvement and railroads, which acted as issuance of additional funds. (Continued) Posted by: Kindltot at May 01, 2022 10:47 PM (xhaym) 178
Prior to this, during "free banking" that was only subject to state laws, banks would hold specie and issue loans and banknotes beyond the actual value of the holding on the expectation that the clearing of the notes would take time and there would be a continual kiting of the payments. In a credit crunch they bank could offer higher interest to attract more deposits to pay off immediate demands for payment, but this could just be kicking the can down the road. Quite often the bank would just bankrupt and pay off investors from actual value held.
Central banks actually sped up the clearing of the notes and credit payments, making this model impossible without central bank participation. The one thing Crypto does is remove the need for a centralized clearing of credits like a credit agency or a central bank. It is done automatically through the shared ledger that all operators hold. As long as the players are willing to use the markers that is fine. This is true of the Barbados pound or the Paraguayan Guarani, too. Or the Argentine Austral. Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis, Domestic Terrorist at May 01, 2022 10:30 PM (sWM8x) Counterfeiting increases the volume of money in circulation without increasing the value in the world that it represents. Counterfeiting reduces the value in everyone's holdings and is a form of theft. It is a crime when the individual does it, but it is morally wrong when anyone, including the Central banks, does it. If the world's value is represented by a pocket full of dryer lint that is in your pocket, then you have a valuable pocket full of lint. If your brother dries his clothes and winds up with the same amount of dryer lint, then your pocket is half as valuable as his, unless you can show that his is not valid or counterfeit. So a couple pilots, red bull, and hulu somehow come up with an idea for a stunt called Plane Swap. Yes, it is what you think. Basically, there's this stunt that you may have seen, it's been done at least once, where you fly two planes up, put them in a controlled dive at roughly the same descent velocity as a human parachutists terminal velocity and one guy jumps out of one descending plane and maneuvers through the air over to dive into the other descending plane. So Plane Swap is exactly stupid as you have guessed. Two pilots fly planes up then put them into a controlled descending dive then they both jump out of their planes cross and dive into the other plane. Well, they went up recently to perform this stunt and were 50% successful. One guy got in but the other didn't make it and just parachuted down instead. The unpiloted plane became a lawn dart. Well turns out they didn't get FAA permission. They actually very specifically told them "nope". And the proper permissions and documents none of that were done. So the FAA is going to come down real damn hard on everyone involved. Again YouTubers making the FAA very uncomfortable. (cont) Posted by: banana Dream at May 01, 2022 10:55 PM (rWGyP) 199

207 What about butcher shops and little sausage shops that process deer etc. I don't think they've hit this part of the country.
--- There's a large Amish community nearby, and both local government and the Amish people go out of their way to maintain good relations with each other. Nobody tries to collect sales taxes on the produce that people sell from their front porches, for example. If an Amish teenager commits some minor offense, law enforcement will sometimes just let the Bishop handle it. This has always seemed pretty enlightened to me. Certainly. It just seems different, in a moral sense, than committing other crimes. If I commit murder and get away with it, I'm still a murderer. If I produce that perfect counterfeit that's never detected, I'm hard-pressed to see how that's morally wrong.
Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis, Domestic Terrorist at May 01, 2022 11:04 PM (sWM8x) To recap some of the thoughtful posts above; in an honest, properly managed system it's immoral because you are taking some value away from everyone, by diminishing the value of everyone's money by surreptitiously inflating the money supply. However, in a system where the government is pumping out billions of new dollars every day just to pay off it's political allies, then no counterfeiter is capable of producing enough to even be measured. So, it becomes a victimless crime where the only worry is not getting caught. Posted by: Tom Servo at May 01, 2022 11:12 PM (r46W7) 227

Re counterfeiting. There are some very interesting and complex court cases over the years involving what is "money" and what the US govt can say and do about it. This is gets complex, but coin and paper money (that Federal Reserve creates and destroys) are two very different things legally. Coin is, always was and always must be direct Treasury currency (things like the old Old US Note, which are still legal tender and a small amount is still out there are also direct Treasury currency). Here's the funny thing. The courts have ruled that created coin of any kind, anything you might create that would be considered coin is illegal, and only the US govt can do that. Now, paper money. We are all free to create our paper money. Call it scrip. We could create Horde bucks to our heart's content and trade with it. No problem. However, if we try to put something on it that implies it is somehow US govt. authorized paper money, then we're in trouble with the law. One of the bits of swag the mullahs scored in 1979 was some part of the unique (and closely held) money printing machinery that the US had shared with the Shah (along with F-14s, and other "no export" items). Not the paper, I think, but they were able to make very good fake $20 bills.
In the 1990s, in the Caucasus region (bordering Iran), obvious gaijin Americans fresh off the torturous Air Armenia flight from Paris in the dilapidated Aeroflot bucket had their (brand new, from the bank) paper currency subjected to all kinds of bogus tests by locals. I just got interested an looked it up. The amount of direct Treasury currency outstanding is only $51B, which is a tiny fraction of the total money supply. This includes all coin, plus the tiny amount of US notes and some others still in circulation (probably being held in private hands as collectors' items). This includes some gold and silver notes still out there. They are no longer redeemable, but they are still legal tender, and considered direct Treasury currency. The Federal Reserve holds about $1.3B in coin on its balance sheet. It is an asset. This is how the Fed puts coin in the banking system primarily, handling bank demand (there are others way to put coin in the system, however). Fed orders so much coin from the Treasury. It takes it, puts it on its asset side, then creates the nominal value in digi-dollars in the US Treasury's "checking account" at the Fed. When banks need coin from the Fed, the Fed gives them the coin to put in their vault and debits that banks own digi-reserve account at the Fed. Or they could pay it with vault physical cash. Checking account (and other account) "money" are nothing but liabilities of the banks. An IOU from the bank. With fractional reserve lending, they create more IOUs than cash to cover. That practice has been going on for a long time, of course, way back into the first banking systems created. When you do withdraw physical cash, then they have to cover it with physical cash. As it is now, when transactions are electronic, with plastic, debit cards, and direct electronic transfers, all that is changing hands is banking system IOUs. That is trading as currency. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 12:08 AM (Mzdiz) 302

Russia is just saying that if it's okay to fire NATO missiles (even if it's "Ukraine" doing the firing) into Russia to hurt their supply lines, then it's okay for Russia to shot missiles into the countries where Ukraine's supplies are coming from, but with their usual subtlety. money itself does not have to have intrinsic value, it needs to be accepted widely as an intermediary to transfer value from one person to another in exchange for goods and services. In general it allows a buyer to place exclusive claim of ownership or rights over something with the person relinquishing guaranteed to have something he values greater with additional guarantee that it is exclusive to him. five cows for your daughter, five talents of myrrh for your barge, 2/8ths of an ounce of silver for a hair-cut, $20 for a plate of fajitas. It differs from direct barter because of its universality: if you trade turnips for hauling you got turnips, but if you trade coins for hauling you can get a lot of things, and maybe some now and some later instead of all the turnips you have to eat before they mildew. Money is a social thing, not a physical thing, it exists only because people find it useful and they trust it will remain useful as long as then need to use it. Gold is money, there's no getting around that.
Aristotle described the basic attributes. Keep in mind currency isn't really money. It's ironic therefore, anybody is talking about why counterfeiting paper is "immoral". It's already immoral, but at the end of the day, the issue is "Don't try this at home" or "It's OK when we do it." Without getting off into the weeds about "intrinsic" value, keep in mind governments actually outlawed an element on the periodic table. They confiscated it. They said people were "hoarding" it, and then stole it from the American people, and put it all in one place, and wouldn't let anybody else use it. Funny, that. Now what we are talking about is the unit of account Without an objective standard, then money eventually becomes completely unworkable. Like .... what we have now. It doesn't necessarily have to be gold, but there has to be an objective standard. There are standards for everything. The meter, the kilogram, units of time, distance, weight, temperature, everything. Though not money, There's a reason for that. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2022 01:32 AM (jJVsK) 349
There was a guy a while back, who could freehand US notes. They were quite good is my understanding. He was able to skirt around counterfeiting laws, because he never tried to pass them as US currency. He'd eat at a diner or something, and then show the waitress his "artwork" and see if she would accept it in lieu of genuine US currency. Sometimes it worked. I guess they are collectable or something.

Silver is good stuff. But if you have any significant wealth, It's way, way, too heavy and bulky.
Gold is absolutely amazingly compact for its wealth concentration. If you need to get the hell out of Dodge, leave the AO, it's about the only thing. The most recent example that I can think of are the Vietnamese boat people. Historically USD was about as good as gold. Ironically that was because it was as good as gold. The big thing that I noticed when getting into discussions about "monetary policy" with the statists, everything would be going along reasonably well, till I pointed out they'd left out one attribute of Money. It is not only a medium of exchange, it is by definition a store of value.
This causes them to start screeching like wounded eagles. Apparently they don't like this. That's probably why they talk about negative interest rates and money that "expires" and all the other jiggery-pokery they want to do. I can see where someone having wealth they can't delete from afar would keep them up at night, or something. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2022 01:56 AM (jJVsK) 356
Junk Silver is a very serviceable currency. Hard to argue that a 1955 dime, ain't 90% silver. And, it's value is small enough to be useful in exchange, transaction or barter.
Most gold, conversely, has to be cleaved into shavings small enough to resemble exchangeable value. Great when you've got the 1 oz Credit Swisse, but not so much when you have the .1 oz cut off of that ingot on your end of the deal. Now, you've got to weigh and chemically assay that sliver, to prove that what you claim to have is what you have. Smaller, daily transactions, junk silver is king. As are other readily I.D.'d versions of silver ingots, ranging from 1 oz to 5 or 10 oz, to 100 oz. bars. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 02, 2022 01:58 AM (QzJWU) 357

There was a Twilight Zone episode, too lazy to look up the title. Anyway, Claude Akins and two others were some thieves. They stole a bunch of gold. One of them was some mad scientist who came up with a suspended animation gas. Their plan was to hide out in a cave, and sleep for 100 years, suspended, and them emerge long after, and thus be very rich men. Or maybe it was four thieves. One of them died, when his pod leaked. The other emerged, but ended walking through the desert and killing each other. Claude Akins was the lone survivor, but died of thirst, just as some one came up in floating car. He offered them a gold bar to rescue him, then croaked. The future people couldn't believe it. Why did he think gold was so valuable? Turns out that years ago, cheap transmutation became available, and gold could be made out of lead for cheap. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 02:17 AM (Mzdiz) 360

Gold is indeed, king in the long term. But short to mid term, you need functional, smaller than gold value increments to trade, sell or barter. Silver is useful, here. Ammo is even more useful. Gold it the King of holding Long Term Wealth. Even more than diamonds. Diamonds are subjective, up to the judgement of who is looking through the loupe. Short to mid-term? Ammo, then silver. I've always heard it put that gold is not so much and inflation hedge (look at the real price of gold fluctuations over the years, in terms of various baskets of goods), but a shit hit the fan hedge. When societies go haywire, govts collapse, economies collapse, etc, the shit hits the fan, then gold is indeed king. In these times, you don't think of return on investment, or even maintaining constant wealth. It's preserving some fraction of what you have. You hope that fraction will be as close to unity as possible, but that's not guaranteed. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 02:47 AM (Mzdiz) 367
Gold is easy to work, does not tarnish, and is pretty and rare. Hence it is a good thing to use for exchange of wealth.
Intrinsic value is great, until you shoot all your money against bandits. What do you use to trade for the things of intrinsic value? Something that is pretty, does not corrode and is easily formed into small objects. Thanks for the ONT. Posted by: Aetius451AD at May 02, 2022 02:50 AM (dNqv+) 368
publius. You are indeed, correct. Gold is not a wealth investment. It is a defensive investment.
When the S does HTF, then that is when holding Gold might make one wealthier than those who do not. Lightly stated. Invest in 1/3 gold, 1/3 junk silver coins, 1/3 ammo. Hold NOTHING in what is represented in paper, digital or "accounts". If you can't hold it in your hand, you don't OWN it. And monkeys like shiny things. Gold is perfect for our inner monkey. The fact that it is relatively rare, and impossible to counterfeit gives backing to the monkey shiny thing factor. I read an article a few weeks ago. Some one had framed this whole money thing in an interesting way. There are two kinds of money, effectively, which he dubbed "inside money" and "outside money". Sort of an odd sounding way to put it, at first, but it makes good sense. Inside and outside were relative to the "System", the current (corrupt) system of global finance and economic activity. Inside money is things that are within that system, that exist only inside it, and have no value without it. Outside money is shit outside that system that doesn't depend on it. Gold is outside money. Dollar is inside. Roughly, outside money are stuff that is not a liability on anyone's balance sheet. Inside money is always someone's liability. Yes, indeed. However, money needs to have the property of being something can move around, handled, and transferred. Land for example, or say, some valuable house/structure, etc, can't be. All you can say is the whole is not necessarily equal to the sum of it's parts. It can go the other way. Build a car by buying all the parts at a parts store. :-) You'll find you'll spend a fortune doing that, many, many times the value of that car you'd put together. Gold is money. Currency is not money. By definition, you can't "invest" in gold. Because, an investment is something other than money. You can't "invest" in money. It's the unit of account, a marker.
Gold is called a commodity, but it really isn't. It trades on the currency market. If it doesn't have an intrinsic value apart from the one issuing it, it isn't money. People say "You can't eat gold". Well you can't eat pieces of paper either. Gold coins are the easiest thing to buy and sell, worldwide, whoever tells you otherwise is completely mistaken. Within minutes. I'm not suggesting anyone buy or sell gold coins, but I am saying some of the advice in the mainstream has long been really, really bad. As should be evident to most, by now. Off the top of my head, many things can be used as money. Cigarettes. Chocolate.
Good attributes of Money - observed thousands of years ago. Must be rare. Though not too rare. Difficult to counterfeit. Easy to authenticate. Durable. Portable, small unit size to value ratio. Indestructible. Homogenous. Divisible. This means one piece should be as valuable as the rest, not value reduced by not being functional, etc. It should not spoil. As it turns out, gold hits all of the criteria. And chicks dig it, too. It is almost useless in any practical sense, ironically enough. Now, in that inside vs outside money thing, he was arguing that bitcoin and crypto should be outside money. I don't agree. It's very much "inside" in the sense that to work with it, you need the system of the internet, computing power, etc, etc. The concept however, can have merit. I don't know if this is possible. Imagine a concept of a "token", something like a bitcoin, some unit, that can be determined by physical processes. The laws of physics define some process by which some such token can be defined. That is all observes in the universe can do "basic physics experiments" and determine these tokens, and some unique identifier thereof. If that were possible, you'd have something. Something that could serve as "money" and be independent of a system. I don't know if that is possible and would bet against it. Even if some such "token" could be defined, dealing with it would require a level of technology of measurement and such that, well, wouldn't be available to a caveman, or even a modern stranded on the proverbial desert island. We don't hear things like "the yard lost several inches in heavy measuring against the meter on Wall Street yesterday" in the news.
An acre of land doesn't fluctuate in size. We notice our cereal boxes keep getting smaller. And prices keep going up. The problem is, there is no standard unit of account. I'm not arguing it has to be gold standard. But there has to be something other than a "politician standard". Because they will always debauch the currency. History is very clear on this. The constitution says that too. They'd just got off a huge paper money scam that ruined nearly everyone. It always ends the same way. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2022 03:39 AM (jJVsK) 402

Yes, I agree with you that politicians and crooked banksters shouldn't get to play around with money. But the thing is, value is always subjective. The value of that acre of land depends on, well, what others will pay for it, as the old saying goes. Context, you might say. In some times and conditions, a given acre of land might be worth a lot to people. In others, it won't be, depending on conditions. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 03:41 AM (Mzdiz) 404
No, you're missing the point.
The size of an acre doesn't fluctuate. The kilogram is precisely defined. What is the definition of a "dollar"? Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2022 03:44 AM (jJVsK) 405
The Romans had several series of currency devaluations and collapses. The biggest I am thinking of came due during Diocleatian, who essentially had to scrap everything and go to a barter system (and other things) that essentially set everything up for a 1000 years of feudalism. He tried to fix the existing system without taking the worthless coins out of circulation, and that kind of doomed the currency side of things.
Constantine essentially restored currency stability by instituting the Solidus for gold coinage. I have seen arguments that this only solidified the wealth of the rich, but I find that less persuasive than the further entrenchment of the feudal, top down management of everything started by Diocletian. Consider the physical units, the dimensions of time, length, mass, etc. They have objective physical meaning. Now, we can define them arbitrarily. The unit of time is this. The unit of length is this here thing, and the unit of mass is this here. That's the way we've done it. However, we don't have to. We can let the laws of physics determine them. That is hard, however, as you need very precise measuring equipment and expertise to do it. We are slowly moving toward the ideal. With arbitrary units, we have physical constants that have to be determined by measurement. When our measurements get to be precise enough, we can simply *define* those physical constants to be some value, and let the determine the units. Now, for years, we did that with the meter, the unit of length. We define the speed of light to be exactly some value, and let the second determine the meter. Things have progressed enough that we now define mass, the kilogram, in terms of the second. See the "watt balance". Here, we define Planck's constant to be a specific value, and knowing the meter and second, the kilogram is then determined. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 03:48 AM (Mzdiz) 408
The physical properties of that acre don't change. But what is its *value*? Ain't no physical, objective, laws-of-physics way to define that. It its subjective. It's value is only what someone else will pay for it, no more, no less. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 03:49 AM (Mzdiz) 409
That change to the kilogram took effect in 2020. The Kelvin and the Ampere (and unit of charge) also were changed. Basically, the only arbitrary unit now is the second. And that can be done away with as well when technology improves enough. Again, there is no way any notion of value can be defined by such physical laws. I'm no mathematician, but I suspect for calculations to work, people have to agree on certain definitions.
Same thing with accounting. How can you make anything work, when one of the components is undefined? One of the things FDR did, along with confiscation of the money supply, was renege on gold bonds, and gold clause contracts. The latter were common for 99 year lease agreements. There was an interesting court case on this. Terwilliger, I think. A Des Moines office building was being leased, and a sharp accountant noticed it had a gold clause contract, about 1985 or so. The leasers were paying something ridiculous, like $1000 a month. For the whole building, because it was based on 1900 year dollars. They prevailed. Gold clause contracts are legal again. Something to think about, perhaps. Because there's no way to protect yourself without specifying some objective unit of account. "Medium of Exchange" only works over short time periods. This is why "currency" isn't money per se. Or put another way, nobody ever had to force people to use gold as money. But they had to outlaw gold, and use the force of government to make people use their scrip. Posted by: Common Tater at May 02, 2022 03:54 AM (jJVsK) 413

Okay, define for me a unit of value. Something objective, something in terms of physical laws. That is something that say, some odd lifeform somewhere in some galaxy a billion light years away could agree on. Say this lifeform is much longer timescale than we are. Much slower, where a second equivalent to them is say a 100 years to us. We can't easily communicate, even if were right there. We can agree on such definitions of the physical units, as the laws of physics are constant. Define a unit of value in those terms. You seem to have no answer, other than there is no way to define value, so I take it you are comfortable or at least resigned with the current monetary arrangements? That can't be right. I find that difficult. Usually when I find such resistance, an old saying comes to mind. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, if his paycheck depends on him not understanding it." An extreme hostility to gold as money, was usually found by people who wanted "printing press money". As Alan Greenspan said in 1966 "Gold stands in the way of this insidious process". His treatise on gold was quite good. Buffett also wrote an excellent paper on gold money. Not Warren. Howard, Warren's dad. He was a congressman from Nebraska. 450 Dang I can't sleep tonight. I had one cup of coffee at 9am Sunday. No idea why I can't sleep. Only thing is I missed taking a seasonal allergy pill last night. The generic for xyzal. They're not supposed to make you drowsy but maybe my body gets dependent on it for sleep. I might take it now but I'm afraid I will be drowsy at work. I'm screwed either way. Have a good morning/day/night everyone.
Posted by: banana Dream at May 02, 2022 05:00 AM (0fVbu) Sorry. Good sleep is awfully important! Warm milk before bed, maybe? Can't hurt. Posted by: m at May 02, 2022 05:20 AM (6i1Yo) 458
>> A contract denominated in dollars has to be paid back in dollars. Monetary inflation is a form of fraud. A hidden tax. A slow default. Or a fast one. See Weimar, Yugoslavia, countless examples. Default.
------------------------ I am very aware -- ****very aware**** of all that, Tater. My argle bargle is about defining precisely what you mean by all that. I'll tell you what you're after. You're after a unit of currency, the GDP deflator of which is pegged at a constant 1.0 over time. We could define it terms of a constant CPI style basket of goods deflator, but that is more problematic. A GDP deflator is better. It means that a unit of currency buys the same fraction of GDP over time. A dollar in 2000 buys the same fraction of GDP in 2020. The problem is that notion of GDP. What an economy produces, what its people value, changes over time. [continued] Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 05:23 AM (Mzdiz) 459
Horrifying story over at Insty about a kid who killed himself because he was bullied for supposedly NOT being vaccinated.

Aetius normally would read it but doubt now I could, feeling of sorrow just from you saying is too much.

In 2000, the value of coffee, per the population's production fraction, may differ from 2020. But the constant GDP deflator, the neutral GDP weighing means our "constant unit of value" is determined by what the economy produces. So, in 2000, that may be more coffee to dildoes, but in 2020, more dildoes to coffee.
That's the best you can shoot for a a currency. Constant unit GDP deflator over time. Gold ain't gonna do that. Nothing much is gonna do that, save a central bank with a crystal ball that can adjust money supply to hit that peg. Central banks don't have a crystal ball, but an honest one could come close and maintain that, on average over long time scales. Now, the problem with is GDP is average of the whole economy. Not any indivdual, which varies. The economy and any individual's notion of relative value can differ greatly. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 02, 2022 05:28 AM (Mzdiz) 462

NYC could find nothing on Trump to take to the grand jury, so the NYS AG is going to investigate. We will continue our investigation until we can twist something into a crime.

The headline of the article is not born out by the details that are given in the article. It's a very click-baity headline.
