Sir Tom did a lot of painted portraits it looks like. Most of them are women, some men with feminine features like this. A few manly men but they have gruff features that lend them to masculinity. He also has a few that I could describe best as baby wrastlin. Put a few babies in a ring, oil 'em up, and DING! Look at 'em go. I got 20 on the little guy with chubby arms, he's a closer.

As a genre, I'm not a big fan of portraits but I like this artist's work. He captures wonderful skin tones and, like the little boy, the poses are more natural and relaxed. I also like the dark-ish background and how it matches with the clothing and emphasizes the skin and hair.
Part of my interest is how it revels the clothing styles of the period and even gives an idea of attitudes toward children. At least among the better off families. I'm also a bit amused at the Romantic pose with such a little boy. Posted by: JTB at May 05, 2022 09:47 AM (7EjX1) 97

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo. Posted by: Quarter Twenty at May 05, 2022 09:50 AM (xnhXC) 115

Interesting history.
Sir Thomas Lawerence studied art in his teens at a remote academy located in the French Alps near Olan Mountain in the Massif des Ecrins. The academy sharpened students skills by having them paint massive amounts of portraits for wealthy clients. It was not uncommon for an academy student to paint as many as 30 portraits per year in various sizes to hone their painting abilities. The academy became know as the [i|Mills l'Olan and is the inspiration for the modern Olan Mills photography studios in modern day. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at May 05, 2022 09:59 AM (MpDCO) 167

I'd have to say Ann and Nancy Wilson, and Joan Jett, have all produced good rock songs. But "rock" is a pretty wide compartment in popular music.
Personally I think Karen Carpenter had a finer voice than any of the above, but her songs were pop tunes, not rock as most of us think of it. And Bobbie Gentry had a wonderful husky voice, on display in her 2 big hits, "Ode to Billy Joe" and "Fancy." (She wrote both of those songs: dynamite work.) But those probably aren't "rock" either. Just throwing this out there - if Trump wins in 2024, will the facts about adverse effects of the covid vax be suppressed
Likely - but this is true unless you get a President and a Congress willing to go scorched earth. This is one of those truths that could end the modern Western technocracy if it ever got out. My late uncle, coal truck driver, WWII tank commander, hot rodder, later a municipal sewer operator, got his first haircut when he started grade school. His mother liked that look, and had several portrait photos made of him in ringlets and old-fashioned boy's suits. I blackmailed him with those portraits for 42 years.

Why-why, what's the point of going abroad, if you're just going to be treated like a sheep? Carted around in buses surrounded by sweaty mindless oafs from Kettering and Boventry. Being herded into countless Hotel Miramars and Bellevues, Bontinentals with their international luxury modern roomettes and swimming pools full of draft Red Barrel and fat German businessmen pretending to be acrobats and forming pyramids and frightening the children and barging into the queues. And if you're not at your table spot on seven you miss your bowl of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup, the first item in the menu of International Cuisine.
And once a week there's an excursion to local Roman remains, where you can buy Cherry Aid and melted ice cream and bleedin' Watney's Red Barrel. And spending four days on the tarmac at Luton Airport on a five-day package tour with nothing to eat but dry British Airways sandwiches. And you can't even get a glass of Watney's Red Barrel because you're still in England with the bloody bar closes every time you're thirsty. Lefty LIVs later: Oh no he did that thing he said he wouldn't do! I'll never vote for him again! Lefty LIVs more later: Damn I have to vote for that Democrat or...A REPUBLICAN? Well guess I'll vote for the Democrat I said I'd never vote for again Posted by: 18-1 at May 05, 2022 10:53 AM (ESjRY) ======= Personnel is policy. It doesn't matter if Biden has an aura of moderation (which was always false). It matters that he's filled his cabinet with radicals who want to destroy the American people. The moderate Democrat is a myth because the upper echelons of the party are enthralled to their activist base in the worst of ways.
