We're Officially Unofficially In a Recession as the Government Reports the First Quarter GDP Shrank 1.4%

gdpdecline.jpg

Unexpectedly, the most incompetent and socialist (fake) president in history delivers the expected bitter fruits of incompetence and socialism.

The U.S. economy cooled markedly in the first three months of the year, as snarled supply chains, record-high inflation and labor shortages weighed on growth and slowed the pandemic recovery.

Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank by 1.4% on an annualized basis in the three-month period from January through March, the Commerce Department said in its first reading of the data on Thursday.

Refinitiv [an analysis/data firm] economists expected the report to show the economy had expanded by 1.1%.

There's your "unexpectedly."

It marked the worst performance since the spring of 2020, when the U.S. economy was still deep in the throes of the COVID-induced recession.

"Today's shock drop in GDP is a wake-up call that the economy isn't as strong as we all thought," said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance. "It's possible that GDP gets revised higher next month, as this is just the first release and there will be two revisions, but it is a warning sign."

I've previously quoted analysts who offered their suspicion that we're currently in a recession, which would soon be officially confirmed as one.

The strict technical definition of a recession is "Two consecutive quarters of negative growth" (shrinkage, as noted economist Costanza would say).

They were pretty certain that given the huge amounts of inflation, and the diminishing "growth" returns from simply coming out of a self-imposed national lockdown, that the second quarter, the upcoming quarter, would be recessionary one.

And they also suspected that the current quarter -- which was actually the one that just passed, the first quarter -- would also turn out to be a quarter of contracting economic activity.

So their idea was:

The then-future second quarter: Just about guaranteed to be a recessionary quarter

The then-current first quarter: Likely to turn out to be a recessionary quarter

So the quarter which they judged to be less likely to be recessionary, the first quarter, just turned out to be recessionary.

The next quarter will almost surely be another quarter of economic contraction, and thus our decrepit, dying-brained Fake President will have created a f***ing recession due to toxic levels of overspending when all he had to do was just open the economy and let the natural rebound effect produce quarter after quarter of growth.

And I can't wait for all the excuses.

And I can't wait for the claims that we just have to spend more and more trillions to fight the inflation caused by the last pile of trillions we injected into the economy, which caused the inflation.

And I can't wait for the media to parrot these claims, and I can't wait for the government's new Disinformation Governance Board to rule that any claim that pouring trillions of Fake New Dollars into an economy causes the value of every dollar in the economy to decline, due to the ancient and iron law of supply and demand, is Russian Disinformation, and that social media companies are required to provide warnings stating that it is such.

Why did you think that? This not sensible even from the top-line breakouts of the Q4 GDP print. Yes, that showed growth and a lot of it, but it was all inventory build. Inventories were depleted during COVID, Christmas was coming up, things were starting to relax in terms of restrictions and the supply chains were shot to hell. This led to a massive inventory build. Subtract that inventory build and the Q4 GDP was barely in positive territory.

What on earth made these people think that an inventory-driven blow-out quarter changed any of the decaying fundamentals to the point that they didn't see contraction coming?

Doing nothing would have better than doing what they've done. Trump opened the money spigot way too far and for way too long and that damage was done by the time Biden came into office. We'd have inflation right now regardless.

But the best play when you're bleeding is to stop stabbing yourself in the guts, which Biden and his politburo have *not* done. They took the bad things Trump did - free money, relaxed terms, easy credit, etc. - and doubled down on them while also adding regulatory burden to businesses, crippling the oil industry, doing nothing to address supply chain and transport, creating foreign policy disasters and lobbying for massive spending packages, some of which they got.

Posted by: Elric Blade

Yes and no. The true issue is that inventory investment which is always the forgotten variable in GDP is falling through the floor as would be expected in stagflation. Even the richer get screwed over time by inflation as it prevents formation of future wealth. If it is bad enough, even the wealthy are affected because stagflation is usually followed by a severe recession/depression that provokes political unrest.

Which will also cripple the federal government. The Fed can't get away with just an interest rate rise. They have to drain their balance sheet, too, and suck a lot of those excess dollars out of the system. That is going to murder equities and bonds. They might try monetizing the federal debt while raising rates and shrinking the balance sheet to slurp out more money than the feds dump in through their fiscal malpractice. As far as I know, that's never been tried before but then again we're also getting in to YOLO territory.

121 Why did you think that? This not sensible even from the top-line breakouts of the Q4 GDP print. Yes, that showed growth and a lot of it, but it was all inventory build. Inventories were depleted during COVID, Christmas was coming up, things were starting to relax in terms of restrictions and the supply chains were shot to hell. This led to a massive inventory build. Subtract that inventory build and the Q4 GDP was barely in positive territory.

What on earth made these people think that an inventory-driven blow-out quarter changed any of the decaying fundamentals to the point that they didn't see contraction coming?

Posted by: 18-1

Yep. IIRC there was $4500 in median household wealth gained, and that was while both parties were investigating and working against Trump. It's incredible to think about where we'd be if they loved America and their countrymen.

Regardless, then the Democrats figured out a way to take that $4500 away because they were angry that 2020 went like it did, and now that same household has to pay $400 extra every month just to maintain the same standard of living they had a couple of years ago.

I know the rules about math here, but
$400 x 12 = $4800

Look at the reporting categories and it gets worse. Defense spending is down, and they're trying to fix that by studding money into Ukraine. Inventories are also down on autos. Guess how many people will be buying autos next cycle with inflation and rates going up. Watch sectors like consumer credit, mostly based on rates. It's going to be a bloodbath at some point. They're trying to forestall reporting of a recession. But the average person can already smell it coming.

Here come the calls for more patience. Don't you know we are playing the loooooooooooooooong game? Some time by 2067 charges will drop. Just you wait and see!

One failure to prosecute does not mean all investigations will end that way. Vance/Bragg’s investigation will end without an indictment, but that has no bearing on the outcome of investigations by James, Willis and the DOJ.

If they ever told the truth about the years since 2008, the Capitol Building would be razed to the ground and maybe the White House as well.

253 the third path is to just do nothing effective at all, and let inflation accelerate into hyperinflation. This is always the easiest politically (at least in the short term) Then somebody else has to clean up the mess. Posted by: Tom Servo

Hyperinflation ends up in an even deeper depression and creates trauma for decades. Apparently all government debt in the world went up 9 percent with Japan, China, and US leading the way. But even Germany's borrowing went up 14 percent. I gave up forecasting a couple of years ago because simply we have sailed beyond the path of knowledge. Economics pretty much had resolved national issues but the globalization effect introduces so many additional variables and data points that even the Davos crowd is flying blind in a snow storm on what the economy will do.

For an individual, I would focus on food, energy (especially a means to keep warm), medicines, water sources, and necessary durable tools and goods. Learn to fix things yourself and create things yourself.

It happens routinely. From a month and change ago:

The internals of the Q4 GDP print were not great and a decline in Q1 was expected by anyone paying attention. If Q1 growth comes in negative - which I think they will jockey around to try to put up 0.5% positive or so and blame Putin - it is a massive failure because it also implies that, sans inventory, Q4 was probably also flat or negative. Repeating the feat in Q2 will not play well in November.

I was wrong. They couldn't jockey it up to barely-positive territory.

320 From a purely theoretical academic Keynesian viewpoint, yes, the way to suck out the extra dollars that they just injected in to the economy would be to raise taxes. The problem, of course, much like trying to raise rates in this environment, is that it will torpedo the economy further. And they can't have that 6 months before the election. So they will do nothing. And get clobbered anyway.

But even from the Keynesian standpoint (and this is also true among the monetarists, though they would advocate a different route), it still requires the government to run in surplus. So in order to curtail inflation, the net new tax rake-off would need to exceed the deficit and then that money must *not* be spent. So with a trillion dollar deficit, they'd need to raise taxe revenue by somewhere in the neighborhood of 50% (personal income tax was responsible for about $2 trillion in revenue in 2021) while also not increasing spending one penny before they remove even a single dollar from the money supply.

The foreign adventurism thing in particular seems to have been a narrow blip in Republicanism in the 00s brought on by W. It's hard to think of examples from the previous couple of decades where Republicans were gungho about starting full on wars to "secure democracy".

Spreading democracy and blocking the spread of communism at the end of the Cold War never seems to have been as heedless and full throated as invading Iraq.

341 From a Daily Mail article about the murderer of the 10-year old girl in Wisconsin - note - you may not want to read the last paragraph below with details of the photos.

"The 14-year-old boy charged with the rape and murder of Wisconsin girl Lily Peters is the son of a convicted pedophile, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Adam Berger, 37, spent three years in jail after being caught with a stash of pornographic images of prepubescent girls on his phone.

Berger's son Carson Peters-Berger, 14, is now facing a possible life sentence after being charged with three counts over Lily's death: first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault and first-degree sexual assault of a child.

According to charging documents for Adam Berger, 10 pornographic photos showing very young girls in spread-legged positions were found on his phone. Some of them had been doctored to include comments such as 'first in ur little girls a**hole and then in ur mouth mom.' "

Dem's didn't really start to go totally pro-censorship until about 2015. Now a lot of us saw it coming, but for those who didn't that's when it became apparent.

438 There are very few ways to control inflation but one of them, the most impactful, is really easy to do. Stop deficit spending. That's all.

There would still be inflationary issues with the economy because you can't just magically make them disappear, it takes time but they would largely work themselves out if the money supply was stable.

There are some other ways to reduce the money supply but none of those will work if we still have deficits but we don't need to reduce the money supply so much as just stop making it bigger.
