Gray whales, plus, a wild beluga whale -- not a Sea World trained whale -- just plays fetch with random humans with a rugby ball. He brings it back and everything. And lets it go.
Which most dogs will not do! (At least not without a lot of training.)
Such a goofy looking animal. It seems so sweet. I was always fascinated of the fact that humans and other beings are able to have a mutually enjoyable recreational experience. Cc: an0mn0mn0m pic.twitter.com/dWsIFWJyYK

Some day we're going to find some probe from a massively advanced alien race. It will contain instructions on how to build an advanced ship and how to go to their planet. After centuries of effort we'll arrive, walk up and present to the aliens the probe they sent. An alien will take the probe in his hands, arch his arms back and throw the probe back into space and then jesture back out. "Who's a good boy! Get it!"

Has intersectionality of pups entered scoring yet? We need to establish which are the oppressed breeds and which are the oppressors. Equity considerations must then be applied. I'm also sure that in the interest of fairness that gender fluidity of canines must be included as a category for scoring. How else are you to know whether canine society has oppressed their sexuality.

101 Okay, this ain't funny any more. I had to get some off-road diesel for the tractors this afternoon. I nearly ran my 7710 out -- the gauge for the second tank doesn't work right, and I was figuring I had more than I did.
I had to bleed it, just a little on the low pressure feed side, but no the injectors thank God.
Anyway, full tax diesel is 5.09 per gallon here, nearly $1.40 more than gasoline. The off-road was $4.89. I paid $162 and some change for around 32- 33 gals.
Thanks Sundown, J-Pow, and Tony. Thank you very much.

One of the creepier horror short stories that I read was an Ornament to His Profession by Charles Harness. Same compilation had a decent horror story out of Harlan Ellison. Think the compilation was title Demons. If you like good v. evil, then Manly Wade Wellman's Silver John series is excellent. His earlier Thunstone series is not bad but Silver John is excellent.

Nope, never read Anvil as far as I know despite having several Analog compilations. I'll try to locate some of his writings. I will also look up the Russell short story you cited.
H. Beam Piper was one of my favorites as is Heinlein before the 70's hit but reading Time Enough for Love once was enough for me. I Will Fear no Evil was trash for the most part.
Creation took Eight Days is a creepy take by Heinlein on the spate of flying saucer stories reported in the press in the 40's.
A favorite short story of Piper for me is Day of the Moron where societal dysfunction leads to disaster.

I read a decent small novel by Petter Watts titled "The Freeze-Frame Revolution". It follows people on a spaceship doing their job. The fact that it takes hundreds of thousands and many millions of years to get anywhere is a central part of the book.
So it's all the original workers but they are put to sleep for great spans of time and only occasionally woke up to do things. Since they left they've never once heard back from earth. They are building transportation gates back to earth but the only thing that ever meets them at the gates they build are monstrous nightmare leviathans that know them and wait for them on the other side and immediately attack. They call them demons. But that isn't the main point of the novel and is just a backdrop to the question of how these individuals handle their never-ending mission across the galaxy.

Not only does the low sulphur requirement make diesel more expensive it also makes it harder on the engine unless you add an additive to provide the lubrication factor that the sulphur used to take care of. Used to be, only needed an additive for anti-gelling in cold weather. Now, good idea to use one all year round.
I am hoping to keep my somewhat older p/u going and at least avoid having to buy DEF along with the diesel like the newer models have to do.
I forget exactly what pollution sulphur was supposedly causing, maybe acid rain.

I've had this rolling thought/conversation that may be completely off thread about...."Bells". Historically speaking, the impact on a society where bells were included in the daily functioning and to a large part drove people about their day to day activities under the tolling of bells at certain times of the day. Sailors at sea responded to a sequence of bells that not only told them the time of day ,but also changes in shifts topside and alarms to fires onboard or approaching threats.
I will stop here as I want to flesh this out a bit more

She's going to University in South Africa to study to be a vet because it's way too expensive here. She said it costs as much $300K here for the vet Dr degree! Anyway, she loves traveling and it was lovely to hear of all the places she has been. And I didn't get the impression that she made a lot of money either. Short story compilation John the Balladeer is probably the best of his short story compiled plus a later one.
The Old Gods Waken is a decent novel but After Dark is probably one of his better novels with a very good set of villains. Still looking for his last novel which is out of print, Voice of the Mountain at a decent price. Lonely Vigils is his collection of Thunstone stories.
Wellman also wrote quite a bit about Civil War history, and this and that and started as a newspaper guy after graduating at Wichita State in KS. Think he was born actually in Africa. Ended his days in NC mountains cabin with famous banjo player Obray Ramsey as a neighbor.

305I have noticed maybe a third of people still wearing masks. My favorites are the ones walking around with their masks below their noses. Why even bother?

There is a lady at the sauna I go to who wears her mask under her chin inside the sauna. I don't know if she does it to soak up sweat or what. Looks itchy to me.
