Daily Tech News 27 April 2022

Top Story

  • "Fear" is not the word I'd use here: Under Musk, some fear Twitter's moderation progress could unravel. (NBC News)

Twitter's moderation stance was generally sound through to 2016, mostly tolerable from then until 2018, and on an oscillation cycle between Orwell and Kafka since then.

And the star of this article is none other than Brianna Wu:
Brianna Wu knows firsthand how bad the harassment on Twitter can get. A software engineer and game developer, Wu was targeted with death and rape threats during GamerGate, an online harassment campaign against women in the gaming industry that started in 2014.
Everything in this opening paragraph is not only wrong but a direct lie.
Wu, who has more than 100,000 Twitter followers and has used the platform throughout her career, said she consulted with the company's trust and safety team in an unofficial, unpaid capacity from 2014 to late 2021.
Apparently this is true though - Wu has been working as an informant for Twitter's corporate mutawa.

Follow US law, ban the spambots, and give users the tools to block the trolls and lunatics.

Oh, and Elon? Close any offices Twitter has in Europe.

  • Yes.

  • History didn't repeat for once: The Erie Railroad War of 1869 has eerie parallels with the Twitter board's poison pill. (ThoughtCo)

That time, Cornelius Vanderbilt - the richest man in America - failed in his takeover bid and the board looted the company, which went bankrupt in 1878. And 1893. And 1938. And today is part of the Norfolk Southern Railway, railroads having some intrinsic utility unlike social networks.

  • Lucid group has an order for 50,000 electric vehicles from... Saudi Arabia? (WCCFTech)

The company is not a major player in the field so far, but just announced a new 1050hp model with a 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds. This deal follows on the back of a February agreement to build a manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia. That's not something the country is known for, but the oil isn't going to last forever.

  • You wouldn't download a Mac, would you? Not when you can run it right in your browser. (MacOS8.app)

It has Civilization installed, and SimCity, and Photoshop alongside Kai's Power Tools, and Claris Works and Microsoft Word. It's actually pretty functional.

  • Sorry, I can't come in to work on the pyramid today. A scorpion bit me while I was brewing beer. (Open Culture)

Which is probably a good excuse if you live in Texas today. And are working on a pyramid.

  • The Ugly Monkey JPEG Instagram group got hacked, and $0 worth of ugly monkey JPEGS were stolen. (ZDNet)

The article claims $3 million, but journalists will say anything for clicks.

  • With memory prices steady SK Hynix has doubled its profits against the same quarter a year ago. (ZDNet)

This is good news for memory manufacturers - and for the rest of us too, because there aren't many of them left. Memory prices are cyclic, and a lot of the companies exited the business one way or another in the last two bust cycles, leaving just Korean SK Hynix and Samsung, and US-based Micron.

  • Who is Risa Hoshino, Instagram MD? (Sarah Burwick)

Unusually it turns out she genuinely is a medical doctor. The rest of it is a mishmash of half-truths and apparent fabrications - mostly relating to COVID, which an offense that would get your account terminated if you weren't pushing falsehoods in the service of the "consensus" viewpoint/

  • Why not just sell NFTs? (BuzzFeed)

That way at least everyone knows you're lying.
Some doctors tried to refrain from giving out medical advice in the Ask a Doc channel. In April, one user posted: "Sometimes I'll wake up with my kidney area in bad pain from sleeping on my side, is this normal?" A lead MetaDocs doctor identifying as Dr. Fayez Ajib, a "Part-time doctor, full-time gamer," according to their Discord bio — advised the user to see their physician.
Huh. Even NFT doctors are more ethical than Risa.

  • The Dell XPS Desktop 8950: Not complete trash. (Hot Hardware)

They weren't testing it as a high-end gaming machine, and noted that the included water cooling solution is designed for quiet and not maximum performance. But given Dell's reputation of unnecessarily loud air cooling, that in itself is an advance.

With a 12600K and a 3060 Ti it's not a terrible power hog: 469W in their torture test but a more reasonable 300W with a normal gaming load - and idle power levels are excellent at just 43W. The included power supply is 750W so it could easily cope with an upgrade to a faster graphics card later.

Single-threaded performance is great, multi-threaded is decent, and gaming is solidly mid-range - about the same as a previous generation RTX 2080.

I'd like to see Gamers Nexus' take on it, but from this review it seems like a decent prebuilt. It does use a non-standard motherboard - all of Dell's desktop systems do - so keep that in mind.

  • On iOS, all browsers are really just Safari in varying degrees of fancy dress. Apple forbids any other browser on their platform. The EU's new Digital Markets Act appears to make that illegal. (The Register)

Explicitly so. While not calling out Apple by name, it does call out the imposition of specific browser engines on a software platform.

Given that Safari causes more swearing from our UI team than all other browsers combined, forcing Apple to compete on a level playing field seems like a good thing, even if it comes via massively overbearing regulation from a grossly engorged Pan-European superstate, like a gargantuan blood-sucking tick that coughs up the occasional bit of ambergris.

SpaceX crews continues the tradition of zero-g indicators, which are floating little teddy bears and shit. This time it was a filthy minkey, and a turtle doll.

They begin floating around, indicating zero g.

Now, a 16 hour coast for rendezvous with the ISS. When I was kid, reading this shit, I pronounced rendezvous as "ren-dez-vus". Still do, in my head, as homage to my younger self.

Great analogy. Yes, even hated public bodies do occasionally serve a useful purpose (even though the same could be achieved by a more lovable and smaller bureaucracy).

14 Elon Musk could have put that $44billion towards tackling world poverty, instead he's used it to send millions of woke Liberal narcissists into a spiral of depression, and honestly I think it's money well spent.
— Andrew Lawrence (@andrewlawrence)
----
It is not possible to tackle world poverty.
1. Jesus, who knows everything, told us the poor will always be with us. 2. Poverty is relative. American poor have iPhones and shoes. Zimbabwean poor are barefoot and may have no food today. 3. Any money sent to the UN and its agencies will be laundered and most will end up in rich men's bank accounts (dictators, armaments manufacturers, The Big Guy, etc.)

Posted by: Ciampino at April 27, 2022 04:36 AM (qfLjt)

15 Ole' Elon will have to figure out a way to neutralize the pseudo "right wing hate groups" that will flood the zone. Leftists have this kind of thing down to a science.

Free speech is messy at times, no argument there. But is it too much to ask that forum moderation take an even handed approach, and not turn a blind eye towards left wing hate groups? "It's OK when we do it" isn't going to work.

Leftists simply can't make their arguments through facts, logic, reason and civilized discourse. They lose, basically because they are full of shit. This is of course as it should be. So their solution is to prevent opposing voices to be heard.

They are calling indisputable facts or evidence misinformation or "hate speech". Orwell may have been a SOB, but he was right about a few things. "Telling the truth is a revolutionary act" or somesuch. Sad to say, at one time I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.

Well, I do now.

The dear departed aunt of my wife was told by her doctor that two drinks (vodka martinis) a day were okay.
She would make 2 doubles, drink them both in an hour. She stood all of 5 feet tall and weighed 110 lbs. I did the maths and told my wife that it would be like me drinking a 12 pack of beer in an hour.

Actually got close to enough sleep last night. Amazin'.

Yesterday my boss gave me his old Lenovo laptop, a massive heavy thing, and a ThinkPad. I immediately configured the laptop they way I wanted, with OpenOffice instead of MS Office, Brave, VLC Media Player, Irfan photo display and editing software, and CCleaner. It's got like 16GB of memory and a huge (to me) hard drive, so it works pretty seamlessly. I passed the ThinkPad on to Miss Linda. She can store her genealogy records and stuff on it. All Elon need do is declare that Twatter will comport itself to the First Amendment, and that jurisprudence standards thereof.

The limit is "imminent lawless action". You can read the details of how that is defined, but I'll give you and example:

Suppose I say, "You know, armed robbery is good thing. It benefits society. We should have more armed robbery." That is protected speech.

But if I say, "Hey, let's go knock over the liquor store on main street today!", that is imminent lawless action.

There is the old "falsely shout fire in a crowded theater" trope. Many a censor loves to use that, as they compare any speech they don't like to that. That never was a standard of any sort. It was a memorable turn of a phrase by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Holmes ruled the govt could censor opposition to the draft in WW1. He compared that to shouting fire in the crowded theater. Holmes, Jr. was a fascist SOB, BTW.

That nonsense has been overturned, and the "imminent lawless action" standard is the law of the land.

The late Christopher Hitchens once gave a pretty good talk on the whole fire in the crowded theater thing and Holmes, Jr.

Repurposing? Hell, just being cheap. Until recently at home I was still using a Win 7 Dell laptop with 4 GB memory that my work bought me. I still use this MacBook Air here that was passed on to me. Instead of buying a new scratching post for the cats, I removed the old rope, rewrapped it in new, and sprinkled catnip on the post. They loved it. And I saved $$$.

The whole "falsely shouting fire in a crowded theater" thing is handled thus in a reasonable society.

Some lunatic jumps up and starts shouting fire, falsely. He's subject to arrest for disturbing the peace, same as if he was just shouting nonsense and making an ass of himself.

Now, if he starts a stampede, and people get hurt, then he's liable for the damages.

I'll point out that, in inflation adjusted terms (and this is not so trivial to do, but it's much easier over a few hundred years), the current robber barons come nowhere near the old robber barons.

JD Rockerfeller still holds the record with a net worth of $450B or so in current dollars. Carnegie was up there close, and in some reckonings, he beats Rockerfeller.

We did it because you needed to be reminded to be prepared for anything" follow on "Are the young troops who are out thousands for cancelled vacations going to get reimbursed?" "No, welcome to the Army, suck it up"
I don't think he realizes how many good soldiers he lost that day.

147 The Army Keeps Boosting Recruiting Bonuses as It Struggles to Find New Soldiers

"The force announced on April 20 that new recruits can earn up to $10,000 bonuses for attending basic training within 30 days of their enlistment, which is called a "quick ship" bonus. That offer is open to at least 60 different jobs, double the total from earlier in the year."

Michael Ignatieff, back in the 1980s, saidit best: "Conservative devotion to the past can be a radical force in a society that rewrites its history as a lie." Back then, he was referring to the USSR; but nowadays it applies equally to "woke" America.

BTW, it is a mistake to use the term "woke" to refer to the leftists who go under that rubric. It implies that they have awakened to the truth; in fact, they have created a fiction, a lie, which they are forcing us to pay lip service to - just like in the USSR.

Japan certainly thought so in 1941, when the US cut off oil shipments in response to Japanese aggression in China. The Japanese junta decided that they needed control of necessary natural resources, particularly oil, the nearest source of which was in Indonesia. And the rest is history.
