Is Netflix Dead?
Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers last quarter, and had actually projected a gain of 2.5 million.
Whoa. Kind of overshot the mark there a little bit. Furthermore, they now expect to lose an additional two million subscribers next quarter.No shit, do you think?
Netflix on Tuesday reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers during the first quarter -- its first decline in paid users in more than a decade -- and warned of deepening trouble ahead. The company's shares cratered more than 25% in extended hours after the report on more than a full day's worth of trading volume. Fellow streaming stocks Roku, Spotify and Disney also tumbled in the after-hours market after Netflix's brutal update. Netflix is forecasting a global paid subscriber loss of 2 million for the second quarter. The last time Netflix lost subscribers was October 2011. "Our revenue growth has slowed considerably," the company wrote in a letter to shareholders Tuesday.
"Streaming is winning over linear, as we predicted, and Netflix titles are very popular globally. However, our relatively high household penetration -- when including the large number of households sharing accounts -- combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds." Netflix previously told shareholders it expected to add 2.5 million net subscribers during the first quarter. Analysts had predicted that number would be closer to 2.7 million. During the same period a year ago, Netflix added 3.98 million paid users. Co-CEO Reed Hastings said the company is exploring lower-priced, ad-supported tiers in a bid to bring in new subscribers after years of resisting advertisements on the platform.And while #Canceling the entire country of Russia was part of the problem, it wasn't the whole problem: That was only a matter of 700,000 subscriptions.
Their plan to right this sinking ship? Cracking down on people who share passwords.
Yeah I don't think that's going to be enough. I don't have Netflix but I notice that barely anyone I know is talking about it, and they used to talk about it incessantly. I don't watch much TV. I don't like TV. I'm going to get grief for saying this, but: TV is made by women, for women. It's not for men. It hasn't been for years and years. (One thing that bothers me about women's determination to take over every male movie franchise: You already have all of TV. Why do you need to also take over the five movie franchises men enjoy?) The stories on TV are for women. They mostly now star women. They are almost entirely about evolving relationships. And they are about slowly evolving relationships. Stories that really should be told (if it all!) in a two hour movie are now all all bloated out into multi-season series and told at a glacial pace because supposedly we get so much more out of "hearing the silences" between actor's words and watching not-very-important plot points play out over four or five episodes. This ineffable slowness is supposed to be a mark of "prestige" TV. Quickness in storytelling, paciness, is now, I guess, a sign of low quality. Low quality, schmoe quality, I don't have eighteen hours to commit to a single fucking story here, ladies. Let's speed things up here, huh? And frankly, I think TV is now written with the idea that there is a necessary peripheral device: the computer or phone. I think it is written with the idea that most viewers will be multitasking -- scrolling through twitter, reading through a newsfeed, etc. -- while watching TV. That's why I think people don't mind the very, very "decompressed" storytelling -- decompressed meaning "allowed to spread itself out into many many hours." I think people now don't so much watch TV as graze it, occasionally looking up as they play around on the computer. If they think they missed one of the one or two important things that happened this episode, they'll just rewind for those one or two important things, then go back to FaceBook. I don't even know if people actually can watch this glacially-slow paced TV if they're not multitasking with social media (or folding clothes, or on the treadmill, or whatever) at the same time. I don't think you can get through it, just watching the paint dry. Anyway, I have absolutely no interest in this. But a lot of people have -- or rather, had -- been very interested in this type of TV, and had been telling me we're in a "Golden Age of TV" and boy oh boy was I missing some of the finest art ever produced in the entirety of human history if I wasn't watching Quality Premium Cable TV Shows. Especially Netflix. Netflix, the Queen of Arts! But they're not saying that anymore. No one's talking about Netflix anymore, it seems to me. It also seems that way to YaBoiZack, who just wrote:

1 day ago I've been a Netflix subscriber since back when it was a competitor with Blockbuster for the Rental-DVD-By-Mail market. I remember when it first started making original content. But over the last 5 years it has devolved into the most bland & boring streaming service out there. Almost every show they create feels like it was made by the same people with the same POV. They even use the same filters on shows with vastly different tones, settings & style. Why does a workplace comedy, a romance set in the 1800s and a sci-fi horror all have the SAME filter? And are the "hits" grassroots or astroturf? Did you ACTUALLY like SQUID GAME or did you feel like you were expected to like it? You can predict entire plotlines from the initial announcement. Everyone knew that He-Man would be sidelined in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. And they were right. Netflix has become a predictable & stale streaming service for woke suburban moms.
Ya Boi Zach complains about this sequence I grimly remember: One episode of Daredevil spent like 15 minutes of Karen Page investigating an auction of a bankrupt business' office furniture. Boy oh boy, it was exciting as it sounds! All the excitement of a bankruptcy auction combined with all the intrigue of office furniture! But man, was it prestigious! The grinding slowness of it all really made you think -- think about things like how poorly you're living your life and spending what precious few hours God has given you on this earth. Ultimately people resort to doing their own editing, editing the show's director should have done himself: We just start fast forwarding through two thirds of the show, looking for things that might, possibly, be interesting. And then we give up, realizing, what is the point of this? What are we doing? There are a lot of shows that people -- women, I mean -- try to sell me on. Like, say, Yellowjackets. Women talk about Yellowjackets. Plane full of highschool students crashes in the remote woods of Canada, they have to survive. And I'm like, yeah, I guess I'd be kind of interested in that, if you could guarantee me I'd be in-and-out in two hours... but you can't can you? You can't even guarantee me the story will be over in an eight or ten episode season, can you? If I start watching, I'm on the hook -- for what is really a movie premise -- for a five year haul, aren't I? Pass. We need to talk about this phenomenon, which started about ten years ago, of Hollywood taking failed movie pitches and turning them into TV series. I'm not a fan of that. But we can talk about that some other time.

Also, I've noticed a trend lately of people going, get this, outside. Crazy, I know, but the streamers will soon find out that those that want to have already binged the whole catalog. People will still pay and watch, for maybe 2-3 months per year for new-ish content, then churn to the next one.

We were talking about the upcoming implosion of streaming services back in March.
He foresees a future where - just like cable, these streaming services are going to consolidate and the smaller ones will become "bundles" which will be delivered via a 6 or 12 month contract. It's the only way these things can survive.

They pursued content.
Content is the key word. They used their massive influx of speculative cash based on the idea that they would never stop growing, and they threw it at approved creators. There was little to no management in the form of producers, and midwit creators spent like drunken sailors writing circular, self-involved nothings of stories that no one can remember after watching them.
Because Netflix needed a library, and they needed it now. They operated on the idea that new content attracts viewers while a library keeps them. So, they went as fast as possible to make a library to rival MGMs.

Also I would recommend Tokyo Vice on HBOMax. That's a police/journalist procedural and made does it feeeeeeel like a gaint throwback. It's pretty solid.

The biggest difference I see is to compare anything now to any Raimi show like Xena. He made shows for men. There may have been parts women could like. But you know you were his target. Women also had their shows too. But these were yours. Now men have nothing.

Not sure when they dropped that baseline from their business. Now its all streaming on line from a set of movies they select. Most of which seem to be third TV series. Almost no first run movies like the old Blockbuster used to have... or that Netflix had via mailing DVDs and then streaming.

Fantasy Island, Benny Hill, Ghosts, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker. And the movies Charade and the Hayley Mills Trouble with Angels.
I started Fantasy Island with season 1 episode 1 mainly because back in the day I never watched much, but enjoyed what I did watch. I figured I’d get tired of it after a few shows or maybe two seasons. I’m now into the fifth season and it’s still fun.
Kolchak of course I’ve watched several times, but have never bought the DVD because it’s a crap transfer. I know this because I rented it on Netflix back when Netflix did DVDs. Apparently it’s not even available except at huge markups now anyway.
Ghosts has been surprisingly good so far, although I expect it will turn into mush by or in the second season.
Benny Hill, of course, is Benny Hill.

Boy oh boy, it was exciting as it sounds! All the excitement of a bankruptcy auction combined with all the intrigue of office furniture!
But man, was it prestigious! The grinding slowless of it all really made you think -- think about things like how poorly you're living your life and spending what precious few hours God has given you on this earth.
Ultimately people resort to doing their own editing, editing the show's director should have done himself: We just start fast forwarding through two thirds of the show, looking for things that might, possibly, be interesting.
And then we give up, realizing, what is the point of this?

For movies and even things like Breaking Bad, local public library has the DVDs, and UToob often has good older movies for free-99. Most Russian war serials available via UToob as well, some with subtitles if desired. Haven't checked RuTube for such things, they probably have even more.

Its good other people are talking about the ridiculous padding in the Marvel TV shows. Daredevil was the best of them and it had 40 minutes of show in 90 minutes run time. I'm all for character development and taking your time to tell a story, but TELL THE STORY, don't just fill run time with pointless conversations and meaningless scenes like the abovementioned one.
ALL of them were like that. Every single Marvel show was padded to hell and back with long sequences of wasted time and just enough good to make you want to come back. And then there were genuine turds like Iron Fist.

I tried because I thought, hey what's the deal behind this. I couldn't get through more than a handful of episodes. "Wow I hate everyone here". It's like spending time with a bunch of a-holes you can't stand. I think some people like that because they see it as a grand spectacle of chaos. "oh I can't believe they did that!" Me? No interest, don't care. Somehow comedy can make this work but the drama version has no appeal to me.

Other than that, Netflix is about done. Their content all has cast members that look like the front two lines of a BLM protest.
Think about how the casts and characters and story lines of Ozark and Breaking Bad differ from just about every other bullshit Netflix series or film. Reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which honest to God I tried to watch but was bored and annoyed at the same time, which is an odd combination.
They are re-rebooting it, hopefully this tiem as an action space opera, not some talky depressing boredom fest of grrl power.
They ruined the entire concept of Westworld the same way, what a yawn fest. Tits and occasional gunfights do not make up for good writing, interesting plots, and engaging characters.

So their programming is monotonous and woke. But even Amazon has decided to crap on their base by removing content streams like HBO and Starz, and just think they can placate people by continually adding the 4th-rate movies from the 1990s.
Aggregating good content for a broad appetite shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe turn down "Cuties" and get "The Chosen" under contract. And don't pretend your doing a history show when your Anne Boleyn is black.

They watched it intently, really getting into it. My daughter loved Princess Allura and as a 12 year old was hoping that Kieth and Allura would be a couple.
Then they killed her and had a Giant Gay Triumphant Wedding where the Gay Guy marries someone not even in the series.
She wept her eyes out on Christmas and even though she watches shows multiple times swore she would never watch it again.
I kept the damn thing for a few years, but it gets more woke on a daily basis and it is getting cancelled, just like I cancelled Disney last month.

I came across some hilarious B-grade spoof last month on Amazon called The Hungover Games. Yes, it spoofed The Hangover and Hunger Games. The three drunk idiots named Zac, Bradley, and Ed get wasted and somehow timeported to the dystopian future where Hollywood is out of ideas and the entertainment is now all the stereotypical casts fighting each other to the death. So it is the Hangover guys versus superheros versus vampires versus the Real Housewives versus two topless girls (handled very tastefully) etc ... 89 minutes of really stupid guilty laughs. What is great about it is that it was made back in 2014 at includes Bruce (not Caitlyn) Jenner as one of the game announcers.

They took a gamble on it, and alot of it is garbage. Netflix grew because they were first and have access to all the content. They proved out the technology and concept. And then all the content providers realized they could do it themselves.
Their move to woke content wasn't all that smart, though with women as their main audience they probably figured it was safe. But too much of that investment in content was poor. For every Bridgerton that got audience, they had tenfold more that were total garbage. As people begin to re-evaluate their streaming spend, costing as much as the cable did, if not more, with still nothing to watch, Netflix is the weak player. They're in huge trouble.

It worked much better than the alternative, which was going to a rental store and then going back the next morning to return it.
Netflix gave us something like a week to return it, and that was based on when it was picked up by the post office, not when they received it.
There were a couple of movies, like Dazed and Confused, that I watched several times during that week. And then went out and bought my own copy.

Just footage from GoPro cams on things like the Teleman canal, the Geiranger Fjord, train trips thru Norwegian countryside (I loved it when the screen went totally black for several minutes as the train transited a tunnel) and my all time fave was videos of people salmon fishing with poles at the riverside.
They moved some episodes to Pluto TV.

Anyway, the premise was typical family in Chicago but the twist was that both parents were jerks. Was kind of like a sanitized Married With Children. Was pretty good if for no other reason than the mom was portrayed as an equal dumbass from time to time.

MTV did that with "my so-called life" in which it was a sitcom type family but the perspective was that the annoying self-absorbed brat daughter is the hero and actually is right about everything. It gave us cutie Claire Danes, so not a total loss but a really ugly direction of culture and TV.

But 24 itself struggled with pacing...b/c it was a weekly, it had to repeat SO MUCH STUFF every week. When you watched it as a binge watch, that got annoying and boring fast. I'd have liked it better I think in its original form and timing...

It's a combination of both. They pad out the runtime to get enough episodes into a season, but they also don't understand how events in a story are really connected, so in the end its just a sequence of events with little to no causal relationship between them.
Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation is a perfect example of how they fuck things up.

You can see what Norman Lear wanted to do, but network execs were a lot more conservative back then and wanted Archie to get his licks in too, to keep both sides of viewers happy or at least to not beat up just one.
Imagine that.

Yep, I recall reading an article once about Desi Arnaz, and it said that he insisted that the Ricky Ricardo character on I Love Lucy not be shown as the dupe in every episode. That was at the very beginning of t.v. sitcoms, and yet even then writers were trying to make the dad the family idiot.

I just found out today that Mick Herron's Slow Horses series of spy novels was just made into a TV series on AppleTV with Gary Oldman. I'm torn between excitement (the books are a cool, interesting take on the spy genre) and dread that Apple is going to butt-rape the stories.
Slow Horses is about a bunch of disgraced or incompetent MI6 spies who are shunted off in a bureaucratic hellhole, where MI6 hopes that they'll get frustrated enough to either quit or drink themselves to death. But they all think that if they just do their best and find some great case to heroically solve, they can get back in the game as regular MI6 officers again. Which they don't know is impossible, as MI6 has permanently written them off.

Tubi is fun. The commercial breaks--I hate commercial breaks--aren't actually too onerous. And they have Prime levels of trash.
Len Kabasinski and Joe from Ozone Nightmare have been doing "Tubi showdowns" where they pull random movies off in pairs and decide which is better. They've managed to find two really fun, watchable flicks out of the 16 they viewed. (The recent "Skin Trade" with Dolph, and a "Miami Connection"-level '70s flick called "Lovely But Deadly".)

Also, for me, visual entertainment is totally dispensable. It's not like music - with very few exceptions, it's not like I care to watch anything more than once or twice in my life. And visual media has only been around for a century, and literally nothing that gets made anymore is good. So there's not some big reservoir of stuff I'd miss.

actually this is like the opposite of that. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is like 4 hours long. but watching it again with the kids, a masterful job of establishing character with dialogue very succinctly. Not long exposition, just terse back and forth, next scene. Its like the world longest episode of Dragnet.

The creators wanted it to be a hardboiled detective type show, but Selleck wanted it to be more like The Rockford Files, which he had done a few episodes of, with Magnum more of a beach bum than anything else. I like both Magnum and Rockford, so that worked for me.

Except that the rule of law is a fvcking joke nowadays. If the legal system were seen by most Americans as evenhanded, then the idea of stealing content from NetFlix (and others) would be much less acceptable.
However, they have eviscerated my 2nd Amendment rights, they have eviscerated my 1st Amendment rights, but I am to respect their laws against stealing from their friends?

I used to be a complete hard-ass copyright law-wise. I didn't lecture people (unless they asked for it, which only happened once or twice) but I'd never violate it.
I'm pretty indifferent now, or in some specific cases hostile. I've been lectured by the media companies how I'm only buying a license for my $20 DVD (which costs ten cents to make), but they're allowed to prevent me from copying it AND not required to give me an easy way to replace a damaged copy.
At some point, you just feel like a chump.

Basil does a decent job as Holmes, but Nigel Bruce was written badly as the Watson.

not really. i'm still doing the dvd option.
i do, however, find that the dvds seem to be drying up. years ago, i was working my way through the poirot series; got to about season 5 or so before my attention wandered on. after watching that new death on the nile move, i got curious about the poirot version. found out it was in season nine. dialed up poirot on the netflix and find out that they now only have back to season 11 or so; anything earlier than that is no longer available.

That David Suchet series is so good. Honestly I have tried reading Agatha Christie's Poirot books and can't make it through anything longer than a little short story. But the shows are an easy watch and so well done, even if not precisely the way the books went.

These people are in my same vague station of life, with a full-time job, kids, other hobbies, etc.
I literally don't have the time in my day to devote to any of these shows that drag on for season upon season. After work, making dinner for the family, helping the kids with homework/bath, cleaning up the kitchen, etc. I have like 1-2 hours a night before I'm shutting it down for bed. I'm not inclined to use that 1-2 hours on one of these dumb shows.
I dunno, Friday Rant Mode engaged I guess.

Several things converged that will never happen again: Networks with enough money and patience to let a show develop; writers who had non-writing jobs before; limited green-screen and CGI; a medium that was still new with tricks still to play; stories that hadn't been told several times already.

When they launched their streaming service it was a groundbreaker in the industry, and publishers rushed to get their content on Netflix to reach new eyeballs. Once the shine wore off of that and all of the content producers decided that it was easier/better for the bottom line to produce and retain the rights to their own stuff on their own platforms, Netflix was done. They were essentially an aggregator for all of the movie and TV production houses.
The rise of the 11ty billion streaming services doomed them.

From my perspective all amounts of thieving are wrong, but sometimes in the broken world we live in, you have to do it because the alternative is a greater wrong (your family starving, for example).
Interestingly enough God's laws for the Israelites understood this and set up a system by which all the somewhat justifiable reasons for thievery were done away with through a clever system of farm management and charity.
Although I doubt many of the Hebrews followed through on it any more than they did most of the other laws.

I wouldn't pay for Netflix if I couldn't 'steal' it for my daughter. If she lived in this household she could watch it, no issue. She's more than a few miles away. I don't wanna watch it.

And if you aren't familiar with ESG ratings on stocks, it's basically social credit scores for corporations and it's part of why seemingly unrelated companies like a gas station or a cookie company promote sodomy, because it improves their Environment, Social and Governance ratings.

I haven't seen 'Green Acres' since the late 70s (Eva Gabor is way sexier now that when I was 12) and those old Alfred Hitchcock mysteries are as good today - for free - as they were in 1956 - for free!

I'm sort of in Ace's camp with respect to watching TV.
My guess is that Netflix's business model took a deep dive when Amazon provided a lot of free streaming with Amazon Prime and when Roku starting ramping up market share. Originally I bought it for ease of connectivity for a few stream sources of content, but it opened my eyes of what is available.
I retained Netflix exclusively for the DVDs which cover old movies that are not available for streaming. But the DVD quality is becoming lousy, as are DVD players, so I cancelled my subscription a year ago.
