  • Dell has implemented proprietary DDR5 memory modules in its new Precision laptop range. (Tom's Hardware)

The single "CAMM" module supports up to 128GB of RAM - which would otherwise require four 32GB SODIMMs. Four memory slots are rare but not unknown in workstation-class laptops.

It's still a little better than soldered RAM, just not much.

  • Samsung's main semiconductor division is, reportedly, a mess. (SemiAnalysis)

The problem is corporate culture delaying necessary changes to fundamental processes - not unlike what was happening with Intel for nearly a decade.

A lot of the article is speculative, but there are definitely delays and yield issues at Samsung's fabs, not to mention a distinct lack of progress at developing their own mobile processors.

  • Speaking of Intel its new 56 core Sapphire Rapids server chips hit 3.3GHz at just 420W. (Tom's Hardware)

If you're thinking that's rather a lot, that's because it is.

This should be a pretty fast chip and provide much-needed competition to AMD's 64 core Epyc range, except that AMD is expected to ship 96 core Epyc CPUs this year and 128 core models early next year.

  • I for one embrace our new robot chef overlords. (ZDNet)

Where's the obligatory dig at the Chick-fil-A owners' religion - oh, there it is. Still:
it's renowned for good food, staff who say "my pleasure" -- and sound like they mean it -- and traffic jams at its drive-thrus.
Which is more than most journalists are prepared to concede.

Mine is more than 24 as it was here when we moved in. Probably well over 35 years and most likely still uses Freon. It's starting to freeze everything and the body is rusting. Unfortunately a replacement also has to fit in the fitted space.

It more than likely repairable, the problem is the cost may be nearly as high as buying new fridge.

I went through that with a fridge recently.

Since the freezer still freezes, it's not the compressor. Could be a frozen over evaporator.

Have you tried to defrost it?

Sure but the it sounds like evaporator coils in the fridge compartment may be frozen over and not allowing for heat exchange.

Is there a panel in the back of the fridge compartment?

Take off the panel and see if there is ice on the coils.

111 so CfA's embrace of wokism has not bought it favor in the eyes of the chattering classes ? pity, that, innit ?
yet they have alienated the core of conservatives who were their only supporters ?
sucks to be them, huh ?

in other news, as an anti-Apple, anti-union curmudgeon, I am hoping for an epic battle ending in mutual destruction and plenty of collateral damage !

118 The Apple workers looking to unionize probably haven't figured out a union isn't cost free and the time value of longer term benefits is wasted on the short attention span Genius Bar worker I'd imagine.

121 As for Chik Fil A, the lines at their drive through, similar to things like Disney park visitation and NFL viewership argues against the go woke, go broke mantra. Yes you have to fight it, but the culture is eroding faster than a sandy beach these days.

131 "Was planning on looking for new fridge today, but maybe call to see if a repair is possible for it. (It's 25 years old and fridge part not keeping cold.)"

A suggestion: Check the coils. If they're covered with dust (an excellent insulator), vacuum the dust off. That should help.

However, getting a new fridge is not a bad idea, because the new fridges are much more energy-efficient than the old models. We replaced an old fridge a while ago, and were pleasantly surprised at how much our monthly electricity bill was reduced: the new fridge paid for itself in less than a year through savings on our utility bill.

BTW, having dealt with unions, I am in principle opposed to them. However, in Apple's case, I'm willing to make an exception.
