They Are Playing With Primal Forces [Joe Mannix]

I don't know about you folks, but I like living in an industrial civilization. I like the relative ease of life. I like the comforts. I like the tools. I like my long lifespan. I like my generally high level of health. I like the world of plenty that we have built. Industrial civilization is a truly remarkable and incredible development.

But industrial civilization is not magic, it is not the result of blind luck and it is not invincible. Industrial civilization has certain prerequisites, and we discovered and developed them over time thanks to enormous effort. Interestingly - though perhaps unsurprisingly - these prerequisites also overlap significantly with basic public health development. Our long lifespans, low levels of disease and generally high degree of health all tie in to the same great enablers of our industrial way of life.

The core requirements for industrial civilization are clean water, sanitation, refrigeration and transportation. The first three are also essential to the remarkable levels of public health we all enjoy. Clean water and the water treatment and distribution systems that deliver it keeps disease at bay and keeps us alive and healthy - and able to produce. Public sanitation was one of the most important developments of the 19th and 20th centuries. Public sewer systems, wastewater treatment and the management of trash handling and removal have probably done more for public health and workforce productivity than antibiotics and industrial management techniques. Refrigeration keeps our food from spoiling and improves access to food. Transportation lets us get stuff - especially food and other critical supplies - from where they are to where they're needed.

These four things are the cornerstones of our industrial civilization and our health. Without all of these things being present, maintained and working literally all of the time, the world as we know it ends. Everything else is downstream from and dependent on these four pillars. The synthetic fabrics that last a long time, the televisions that entertain us, the phones and computers that connect us, the ready access to metals, the tools of our daily lives - everything is made possible by these cornerstones.

Those cornerstones have something in common. Like everything, they depend on human ingenuity and labor and various input materials but more than that, they all depend on energy.

All of our civilization's cornerstones depend on enormous quantities of stable, reliable, affordable, standardized energy that is consistently delivered and always available. A power outage to your home due to unreliable infrastructure or rolling blackouts because of inadequate supply are grossly inconvenient and irritating for people in their homes. They are an unacceptable disaster if they hit the cornerstones and if the hits keep coming, those cornerstones will crumble and the modern world - the world we have enjoyed since the 19th century - ends.

The green energy crowd apparently doesn't understand any of this. They think unreliable power is a manageable problem. People can use batteries or do without their iPhones if needed. This is true, insofar as we are talking about individuals. This assumption does not hold up when we're talking about the pillars of the world as we know it. They need the energy to flow and flow constantly while remaining stable and affordable. If that doesn't happen, we're drinking bad water (if we have water at all), we're stewing in filth, trash is everywhere, our food is rotten and we are limited to what we can get within walking distance (or, if you're rich, a day or two's horseback ride).

The green energy crowd that focuses only on vague notions of "The Environment" or "Carbon" are recklessly playing with the primal forces that underpin everything in our world. They are children playing with matches, and if they aren't stopped, they'll burn the house down.

There are plenty of useful idiots - as always - but those driving the renewable energy retardation know exactly what they're doing.

It's deliberate. You know what people without 24/7 power and personal transportation are?

They're serfs. This is by design. The progs have been telegraphing for a few years now that they intend for the peasants to have rotating power availability and to ratchet up the cost of transport and vehicle ownership - driving population into urban areas and providing leverage over the holdouts.

We can stop right there. Seriously. Let's just unpack your first statement.

Is "industrialized" - as you name it - even preferable ? Like a lot of things, depends on the value set of the individual. Some will certainly prefer it. Some won't. Some will regret their earlier preference. Buyer's Remorse, if you will.

And given a blank sheet of paper, even those that agree with you will differ on the definition of "industrialized". Then they'll not agree at all, and argue about the definition. The Devil always lurks in the details.

This, right here, is where both ideologies fail. The declaration of a preference - and the assumption that anyone with a differing preference must be mad.

They are so ubiquitous that they can be - and are- taken for granted. Plastics in particular were a public health game-changer. Plastic blags to contain our garbage and make it transportable. Plastic films to act as barriers between our food and the wider world. Plastic containers to keep liquids and solids clean and pure.

The war on "single-use plastics" is a war on public health.

13 It is probably the global warming fight where the intentional perversion of science, and the descent into "Scientism" began. It was always hokum, and a lot of motives combining; the desire for a "new enemy" after the Communist Bloc fell, the desire of the Marxists to keep their movement going, simple greed by many who saw this as a great new source of profits and funding.

The other side used to seriously try to "prove" their case; after the "Climategate" incident, where the fraud was proved, the warmists and the MSM simply quit trying to prove anything. Instead, they declared their beliefs to be sacrosanct and began canceling anyone in academia who dared to express dissent.

It really was the test run for everything they've done since.

15 I know someone in CA who lives in an area where there was a wildfire two years ago. The infrastructure is not great, and on top of that, PG&E shuts down the power any time there's "enough wind to get a kite off the ground" within a 50-mile radius. 27 The quiet assumption among a number of Pacific Northwest electric utility analysts is that the push for "100% renewables" will continue until California suffers a catastrophic multiday blackout, at which point the rules will change.

California is in the process of closing its remaining nuclear and fossil fuel plants, while relying on electrical imports from the Pacific Northwest and Southwest to back up California's renewables. These imports come on over long transmission lines, which can fail, particularly when the system is stressed.

The last time the transmission lines from the Pacific Northwest failed in the late 1990s, resulting in a major blackout, there was enough nuclear and fossil fuel electrical generation inside of California to restore the system. This is no longer the case.

29 yeah, the theme already in comments ... "It Is Deliberate"

Critical Theory by "Marxists" (largely an attack from the Soviets at first?) ... somehow our rich cartels merged with them, and expanded the tactics. Now CRT and the rest of the "class struggle" (with every race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. being its own special class) is the New Religion, endorsed and enforced by The State (which itself is run by the shadow bosses).

China is mostly a separate player, imo. But The West (or their bankers) is still dominant. So we must be destroyed first. The commies don't mind killing their own people by the million, and Garland/Wray and the rest seem on course to do just that, if things continue to go their way (and why would it not, with the compliant vegetable in charge)?

32 This is a good time to nag people about acquiring backup power generation while you still can; materials costs are going up, shortages continue, and the dollar keeps taking a dump.

300-500w worth of solar panels - get glass for long life, and folding ones cost a bit more but can be stashed under a bed - and a battery bank will let you run a decent amount of important stuff on an ongoing basis. Commo, phones/tablets/laptops, and some light appliances. And lights.

Can you run a house on a shoestring - no, but it's better than going back to 1850. My solar is a backup to a couple of dual-fuel generators and a ton of spare parts and related maint. stuff.

40 Stephen Davies wrote a book, The Wealth Explosion, discussing "modernity" which he thinks came from a disruption of centralized power in the West, and the disruption of the wall between formal education and craft knowledge, which both allowed feedback between experimental and theoretical research, but also made expansion beyond formalized and traditional knowledge areas profitable and meaningful.

He also warns that it is not inevitable that things remain "modern", and mentions how the Chinese Song Dynasty almost completed a move into an industrial revolution before being conquered by the Mongols and the following Ming dynasty cracked down on innovation to cement its control over all China, similar to the way the Japanese rejected muskets.

the globalists may reject modernity if it means they can run the world like their personal caste-ridden latifundia

The West has been industrialized to some degree in meaningful ways since the 1850s. That's a long time to play with, and I would call it closer to the later 19th century, with the development of London's sewage system and the persistent use of power to manage urban systems that radically improved the quality of life in the cities, with many of those benefits moving out to rural areas from there.

But to your latter point, yes - the opinions of any normal person are irrelevant. The state, institutional and academic will is to either tear it down, or they are indifferent as to whether it fails, or they're so ignorant and stupid that they think it won't because they believe those are just facts of nature.

Rule of thumb is 4 hours of generation - that's 2000W. The space heater next to me, oil filled - radiant - costs 1500W.

Over eight dark hours - that 12,000 W.

Let's talk batteries. The best 200 Ah batteries used to cost $350 - that was 2400W. You'll need 5 of those, best case to run my little oil filled heater for eight hours.

And you'll need 3,000 W of solar panels to charge it, day after day, assuming I only run it at night.

57 the globalists may reject modernity if it means they can run the world like their personal caste-ridden latifundia

That's pretty much their plan, the problem is countries like Russia, China, and India, who all still have or can raise armies that get a vote on running the world.

We can probably argue over how far back they need to take us to feel like they have the level of power they desire, but I think we get conquered before we get back to full feudalism.

59 The quiet assumption among a number of Pacific Northwest electric utility analysts is that the push for "100% renewables" will continue until California suffers a catastrophic multiday blackout, at which point the rules will change."

Of course, this is affecting the Northwest as well. There is a regional agency tasked by the Federal Government with insuring that the Northwest has an adequate electrical supply. This agency had correctly noticed that the wind doesn't blow when it is very hot or very cold, and that the electrical system has to prepare for the occasional severe drought (as happened in 1973 and 2001), when the Columbia River has half the usual amount of water, with obvious effects on hydrogeneration.

So, the agency noted that wind power in the Northwest doesn't help keep the lights on in an emergency. This is a politically unacceptable conclusion, of course, so the agency is changing its assumptions to assume that wind farms will generate a lot of electricity in a crisis (with no basis in fact), and is changing its methodology so it no longer considers severe drought years in its analysis of whether there is enough electricity in the Northwest.

Let's talk batteries. The best 200 Ah batteries used to cost $350 - that was 2400W. You'll need 5 of those, best case to run my little oil filled heater for eight hours.

And you'll need 3,000 W of solar panels to charge it, day after day, assuming I only run it at night.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded here and there, now and then are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

My radiant heater requires 1500W. Over an hour - that's 1500W-hr. They layman doesn't need the distinction of the units.

My little heater requires 8 hrs x 1500W = 12,000 watt-hours to run eight hours in the dark.

81 Not going to disagree with any of that.

Just adding that one unfortunate, little-recognized side effect of advanced civilization is breaking the life cycle of beneficial organisms that have long worked in sync with humans to regulate the immune system.

Evidence is growing that 2-3 species of helminths (symbiotic organisms) no longer exist where humans wear shoes and use flush toilets.

Hence, the proliferation of a long list of autoimmune disorders in advanced societies, including asthma, allergies, Crohn's Disease, lupus, arthritis, Type 2 Diabetes, celiac ... it goes on. These disorders are rare in primitive societies.

There is also some evidence that multiple sclerosis and some types of autism can be mitigated with helminthic therapy.

I put a link to the wiki in my handle. I hope those of you suffering from autoimmune disorders will have a look with an open mind.

Personally, I have used helminthic therapy to eliminate lifelong allergies, and the development of arthritis that had stopped my fitness-running regimen.

86 The biggest hidden problem with solar cells is that they have a fairly short lifespan. Not quite as short as a wind generator's turbine, but short. All those expensive rare earth cells that you bought need to be replaced fairly regularly and as a result the cost is far greater and energy production far shorter than one would imagine.

Like with electric cars, the expense pushes them beyond the point where "lulz I didn't buy gas" will never actually overcome the cost of the car. I ran the numbers a decade ago and they haven't gotten any better. At the time I proposed that maybe in a decade the cost of these cars would come down, but they have not.

Our problems are entirely cultural. We are in this situation not because politicians and laws made it happen, but because the culture has been so corrupted and people's minds so twisted that they support and allow politicians and laws to do this to us.

No revolution, no commies out of helicopters, no new laws or politicians in power are going to make a damn bit of difference until that worldview changes. And changing someone's fundamental understanding of the world, of right and wrong, and of truth is almost always a matter of some horrendous shock they experience that forces them to rethink what they've always assumed to be true.

Central planners must have simplification in the system to succeed because of the real world complications are too great to centrally plan. The Soviets' economy was stunted because of the need to centrally plan, and there is no way to plan for a million people's intentions, wants and interests.

Easy answer. Because the first thing idiots do is get loud.

Life isn't an after school special. There's not some finale' where everyone just agrees that nerd or small kid or whatever was right all along.

And this little thread should be saved. It's literally an insightful view in basic human behavior - and shitty math skills.

The math is easy. Watts and Watt / Hours. You can simplify it by just talking watts - like gallons of gas.

Yet watch. This is group dynamics on display. About a topic so damn simple I could get a good group of middle school kids to do the math.

149 They believe if human population is reduced to a percent or less of current numbers the earth will become a garden of Eden.

Socialists usually get to a point where they have to start reducing the population to keep the standard of living from completely cratering.

Since socialism can't create much wealth the easiest way to say double everyone's standard of living is...to kill half the people and take their stuff.

Our modern corporatist system is sort of doing this in a less violent way by discouraging reproduction...but that is only a short term fix since then you have too many old people.

186 Everyone interested in the modern energy situation and how the world got to where it is today with petroleum should read the book, "The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power" by Daniel Yergin.

It is a world-wide history of petroleum exploration, production, refining, and and its uses since the 1850s. It's a bit of a slog in places, but stick with it.

Did you know the first commercial use of oil and its products was kerosene for lanterns? Kerosene lanterns revolutionized home lighting, making it infinitely more possible to read and do any indoor activity after dark. John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil began with drilling for oil and transporting it to refineries to make kerosene.

A terrific book if you want to learn about the history of petroleum and how it helped create the modern world.

214 though I suppose that medicine would avail little without clean water, sanitation, refrigeration, and transportation.

They're all interactive. You can't have clean water without sanitation, you can't have transportation without energy, etc. But the key that's missing in this is the need for a stable, shared, productive ethical system. You can have all that other stuff, but when you tear down the shared ethics and beliefs about truth and beauty, it all falls to pieces which we're watching happen right now.

Algae based hydrocarbons using waste heat from nuclear reactors is one way out of the 'Peak Oil" argument.

I tried to hire them to assist in an aircraft corrosion project, but 1) it must have been beneath their dignity and 2) A closer look at their mishandling of data showed they had nothing. A person I know was asked to report the results to the Royal society in London, but when they figured out who this was all about, that was cancelled by the US State Department. My take is that if you are going to hold yourselves out as experts in data collection (atmospheric temperatures) at least keep and publish ALL your data, not just that which proves your point and learn the calibration requirements for your instruments.

Plug it in your dead battery for an hour. You just put 500 Watts into your battery. And your battery doesn't give jack shit that you disagree with the pedantic definition of the energy transfer.

Every deep cell battery is 12V. Come on ... 125 Ah is 12 x 125 = 1500W. Four of them is 6000W. Or enough to run my oil heater for four hours.

Assuming perfect inverters, unity power factor, and all that jazz.

254 It is still better than wind or solar, which are energy sinks based on the thermodynamics.

I love hydrogen cars as a concept: the exhaust is water. Its comperable to gasoline in cost and has a much better range (and refueling time) than electricity.

The problem is that it costs more energy to produce hydrogen than you get out of the hydrogen so its a net loss all around. Gasoline is still king because it produces more than it costs. Nuclear, same thing (although its basically just a really fancy steam powered generator). If they could figure out a better way to get hydrogen (or my dream, gigantic ships scooping gas off gas giants) then that is the way of the future in my mind.

Electric Cars are 100+ year old technology that just isn't and I do not believe EVER will be truly viable as a replacement for gasoline despite the desperate fixation so many have on it.

And that's the right approach to solar. Don't try to run everything on solar, use it as a supplemental system for specific tasks.

but those batteries don't perform like that. They run down fast if I try to take out 6000W, in minutes. They have charts for it even. And I don't run mine below 12V, so they last longer. The more draw down each day, the shorter the battery life.

... Each battery is 12V (but there are other voltages) ... but my system is 48V, and I lose about 5% converting to AC, which is 120V (or it can make 240V). So all the units are useful, imo.

The near-term gigantic problem with the political push for electric-powered everything is how to keep enough natural gas and coal plants running until renewable- and NUCLEAR-generated electricity is capable of supplying reliable base-load power coast to coast. And at a reasonable price for the energy they'll generate.

Base-load power is the most important of the many things the zero carbon emissions lunatics don't understand. Driving-up the price of natural gas, coal, and oil to artificially force a wide-scale near-term shift to renewables is insane; driving the gas and coal power plants and gas/diesel cars out of use before alternatives electricity sources are on-line at the required base-load scale is criminally insane.

300 267 The problem is that it costs more energy to produce hydrogen than you get out of the hydrogen so its a net loss all around.

I think the net loss on hydrogen could work out if the hydrogen plants were run from nuclear. It's far, far more convenient for the end user than BEVs, and the exhaust being water is very appealing even when you aren't a green nut.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 10, 2022 01:28 PM (haMNq)

Hydrogen as a gas is a pain to deal with, regardless of cost or how it's produced. Not impossible, but less convenient than hydrocarbons. The real breakthrough would be cheaply producing hydrocarbons using a cheap energy source like nuclear or solar. That would allow for relatively simple storage and transportation, as is done today with petroleum derived fuels.

The food deserts thing is a super tough sell, because they aren't even talking about hunger. A food desert is an area that only has shops that supply crappy food, like fast food and convenience stores. Its not that there's no food, its just not very healthy food.

And its a tough sell to get people to support eliminating or replacing cheeseburgers and pepperoni sticks with broccoli.

Besides, the reason the good food is in megamarts off in the distance is that regulation and minimum wages make it economically impossible to keep a small market going in the neighborhood. The Euro solution is to heavily subsidize the shops, of course.

The herd mentality that can manifest at times even among people who meanwhile declare themselves fiercely independent-minded is an interesting part of human behavior. 376 "That's lousy poetry, but way better than Maya Angelou!"

In my yoot I used to read a lot of poetry. I have a rule to distinguish good poetry from crap, or at least to identify total crap. Total crap poetry is that which, if read without infection, has nothing of interest. Or conversely, that which is reliant on unusual stresses and inflections to give it any interest.

M.A. fails this test miserably. Her "poetry" is, in fact, the avatar of Crap Poetry. Without the hyper-emotive performance, it is about as impactful and interesting as a popcorn fart.

Most modern farms have some alternate energy stuff going on, not only for the deals it gives you (energy companies will give you cost breaks if you have a wind turbine or solar and there are tax write offs, for example) but because it can be used for limited application. But even the most hippie driven "green" "organic" farm doesn't try to run on solar and wind.

The rule is something like 100:1 if I remember correctly; some rather large number. I think the erudition, education, and skill of some commenters (other than myself) intimidates some into not dipping their toe into the water, here. Its like dropping by the Inklings and trying to talk about how you read a Jack Reacher book.

Every major city has at least one building that tall as it's downtown anchor. Lots of 30+ to 50 stories. Where do all the solar panels go with corresponding line loss transferring electricity to the building?

396 America, writ large, is the spoiled rotten children of a business tycoon.

The problem is this isn't a dial you get to use to select the level of pastoralism you want to get. Once the the slide gathers momentum there is no stopping. I'll give you a hard cutoff: pre-50's logistics with cargo nets cannot sustain 8+ billion people, or 2 billion with modern conveniences. We won't lose the idea of containers but throughput can drop.

I can only think of one human tsunami of displaced people on the kind of intensity we're probably talking about in (barely) recorded history - the late bronze age collapse - and we're still trying to figure out who all was even involved in that one because it sucked so hard that a coherent explanation hasn't survived in written form.

You are right, it is coming regardless.

398 Those who lead from the left want the pillars of civilization to crack. That's the plan. They want their subjects to be poor, cold, hungry, dirty, sick and defenseless. They themselves can live comfortably for a long time on the dregs.

And if they can make us believe that men can become pregnant and need abortions, they can make us believe that we will be happy to see our rulers living in luxury, while they work ever so hard to raise us up from the self-inflicted misery we so richly deserve. If only we could learn to give up just a little bit more....
