On the last thread, it was pointed out that while the Julio-Claudians were weird (end of the Roman Republic/start of the Empire), Julius himself was a pretty magnanimous guy. And also that he got assassinated, while Sulla and Marius, who also assumed dictatorship earlier, did not.
Sulla's technique would have been admired by the Clintons and the Bidens. He simply "proscribed" a great many of his opponents (had them killed while appropriating their property; it was part of how Crassus, of the later war against Spartacus fame, amassed his fortune). When Sulla gave up the dictatorship, he joked there was no one left in Rome for him to fear. I'm not sure about Marius, but I don't think he was much better. Julius, on the other hand, pardoned and forgave a lot of his opponents. The spared ones resented him for treating them so lightly, and went ahead and plotted his death. So being magnanimous was ultimately his downfall. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at April 07, 2022 03:11 PM (txdEq) 111

So therefore if somebody gets sick, they did "something wrong", but being vaccinated and then saying that your symptoms would be worse if you didn't get the vax, absolves you of the "sin". Torabora mentioned in the last thread that there is no current vacancy on the Supreme Court and that now with Ketanji Brown Jackson we have 10 justices.
With respect, I don't think this is accurate. Breyer has announced he's retiring at the end of the current court's term, which will be in June or July of this year. Jackson was specifically nominated to replace Breyer, and so should not be sworn in and seated until the 2022-2023 court term begins in October 2022. As with all things that occur in the corrupt hellhole that is Washington DC, I am wary of the DemonRats and Chief Justice Roberts and could see them conspiring to just have Jackson sworn in and seated before the end of this term, with no repercussions for that move. @304 There's a story that when he arrived in Egypt, before meeting Cleopatra, he wept because Alexander had conquered much of the known world before age 33. In contrast he, Julius, was middle-aged (about 50 or so -- he died at 56 in 44 BC) and had not yet accomplished anything world-shaking.
---- On the other hand, Julius Caesar was apparently amazed when he learned that Alexander could never be bothered with properly ruling all of the lands that he conquered. Caesar didn't have that issue. Posted by: junior at April 07, 2022 03:48 PM (38th2) 395

SCOTUS had 10 Justices once (the Taney court, pre Civil-War).
IIRC, the number of Justices is set by statute -- "packing the Court" schemes rely on Congress changing the law to create new Justice seats on SCOTUS, which then would be filled. So, I wouldn't worry too much about Jackson being seated on the Court as a 10th Justice before Breyer resigns. Posted by: Revenant at April 07, 2022 03:52 PM (I76dP) 423

Watch William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet with Leo D and Clare Danes rather than read Romeo & Juliet?
Posted by: Thrawn at April 07, 2022 *** I've never seen it, but it looks like a very imaginative staging. Like the Richard III film with Ian McKellen, with the backdrop being a Fascist, Hitler-sympathetic 1930s Britain. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at April 07, 2022 04:03 PM (txdEq) 470
The oft-repeated notion that Julius was delivered by Caesarean section, thus giving the procedure its name, is not true. His mother lived for years after his birth. In Roman times a surgical intervention like that would have killed her. I guess the idea is that it was a "heroic" method to save the baby's life, and someone linked JC with it.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at April 07, 2022 03:56 PM (txdEq) That's why it was remarkable...usually the mother died. It's fairly well documented by contemporary sources. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, RIP Oregon Muse at April 07, 2022 04:06 PM (XvPQV) 471
Although there's a movement to "decanonize" a lot of Western literature, so students may or may not be exposed to Shakespeare. If they are, they get the CRT lecture to go along with it.

Hemingway should be put on a shelf and left there, one of the most overrated authors in human history.

Excerpt: In a clean, well-lighted place, Mickey Spillane, Ayn Rand and Ernest Hemingway sit drinking cocktails and talking about, among many things, Spillane’s 1951 novel One Lonely Night. "Mickey: What’s it about, Ernie? It’s a Mike Hammer book. It’s about death and violence and about Mike taking it to those no good Commie bastards like only he knows how. Ernest: Please don’t call me Ernie, I’ve asked you before." Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 07, 2022 04:12 PM (GBHAb) 473

The number of Justices is set by statute.
I am pretty sure that those laws established the minimum size of the court, not its maximum. As in: the Supreme Court now must have "at least 9" justices, not "may have no more than 9" Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 07, 2022 04:47 PM (KZzsI) 479
