Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Elon Musk Buys 9.2% of Twitter, Becoming Its Largest ShareholderElon Musk took a 9.2% stake in Twitter Inc. to become the platform's biggest shareholder, a week after hinting he might shake up the social media industry. ... Musk, 50, polled his more than 80 million followers on Twitter last month, asking them whether the company adheres to the principles of free speech. After more than 70% said no, he asked whether a new platform was needed and said he was giving serious thought to starting his own. I wonder if that was a fake-out. Or... I wonder if he claimed he was going to start a competitor to Twitter to reduce the price of Twitter's shares, so that he could buy his stake more cheaply. Twitter has previously bowed to pressure from large stakeholders: Twitter is particularly vulnerable to outside pressure because unlike Google, Facebook, Amazon and Snap, the company's founders don’t have special voting control over its future. The company has just recovered from activist pressure by Elliot Management that started in 2020 which led Dorsey, who was serving his second stint as CEO of Twitter, to set a succession plan.I can't believe that this is true: It's unclear what Musk is planning with his stake. The filing with the SEC shows that the date of the event that triggered the disclosure was March 14. The type of form used often indicates the investor isn't seeking to acquire control of a company, or to influence who controls it.Obviously he has an interest in reshaping Twitter. "It looks like Elon has his eyes laser set on Twitter," said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives in a research note, adding that the stake could lead to a "more aggressive ownership role."Twitter's stock price surged on the revelation that Musk had taken a big position in it, which wound up making Musk over a billion in a few weeks: Unfortunately, Trump's venture "Truth Social" continues lagging. April 4 (Reuters) - The two Southern tech entrepreneurs had the two qualities that Donald Trump's Truth Social startup needed: tech-industry expertise and a politically conservative worldview aligned with the former president, a rare combination in the liberal-leaning industry centered in San Francisco. Josh Adams and Billy Boozer - the company's chiefs of technology and product development - joined the venture last year and quickly became central players in its bid to build a social-media empire, backed by Trump's powerful brand, to counter what many conservatives deride as "cancel culture" censorship from the left. Less than a year later, both have resigned their senior posts at a critical juncture for the company's smartphone-app release plans, according to two sources familiar with the venture. The departures followed the troubled launch of the company's iPhone app on Feb. 20. Weeks later, many users remain on a waiting list, unable to access the platform. Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) Chief Executive Devin Nunes, a former Republican congressman, said publicly that the company aimed to make the app fully operational within the United States by the end of March. The company has an app for iPhones but no app for Android phones, which comprise more than 40% of the U.S. market, though the company has advertised seeking an engineer to build one.My financial advisors Ryan Long and Danny Polushuk speculated that Trump ordered the site to be launched early, despite it needing maybe another year of development. They believe this because the site "launched," in its fragged form, on Presidents Day. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Yeah, Twitter has been running on the woke-go-broke business model for several years now, and its not helping them. Changing how they approach customers and do business might save them. The company has an app for iPhones but no app for Android phones, which comprise more than 40% of the U.S. market most big business/celebrity types think the entire world is on Iphone, which is absolutely false, so they see android as an afterthought, if they even consider it. Private sales. That's how big institutional investors -- or stoopid rich guys -- buy large positions. They ain't making a billion-dollar purchase on e-trade, that's for sure. The sales usually come with additional perks such as board seats, side letter agreements, etc. The other huge investors are generally happy to see someone like Musk come on board because of the publicity and stock price bounce. My guess is he didn't have any trouble finding insiders for private sales.

Picking out the most objectionable passage in the "genocide manifesto"
"Denazification will inevitably also be a de-Ukrainization - a rejection of the large-scale artificial inflation of the ethnic component of self-identification of the population of the territories of historical Little Russia and New Russia, begun by the Soviet authorities. Being an instrument of the communist superpower, after its fall, artificial ethnocentrism did not remain ownerless. In this official capacity, he passed under the authority of another superpower (the power standing over the states) - the superpower of the West. It must be returned to its natural boundaries and deprived of political functionality." I mean, you can say that partition and cultural repression of Ukraine is genocide, but doing so invites comparison to the deNazification process in Germany. Which was also carried out by Russians, what are the odds. Anyways, given the intense and totally mindless hatred of Russians (and regular Americans) blasted at us 24/7 by the globohomo regime, I'd first visit concerns about cultural genocide a bit closer to home. Im not sure what Truth Social plans to add that Parler and MeWe do not (Im pretty happy with each of them), but its far too early to know whether its successful or not. Its still in a soft launch, and nobody who knows software expected them to be fully launched by March 31. Nobody in this industry makes announced deadlines.
Anyone claiming they should have waited another year to launch is perilously close to consultant class-thinking: that they should be paid for not producing. In my opinion, the Truth Social team should be doing what they seem to be doing: slowly scaling up the user base while also improving the platform. Being on the waiting list, however, I dont know what the site actually looks like; and this whole thing could be a consultant class boondoggle (thats usually the way to bet about online services attached to big names). From the outside its hard to tell. A year from now well know if its a useful social media service or not. But calling it a failure when it hasnt launched and couldnt reasonably be expected to have launched, is a lot of wishful thinking. I know people who don't like Elon because they believe his business practices are unstable so not a good investment. That may be true. This person is generally good with money.
But I like him. I like him because he's NOT trying to fix the world. An eccentric being outrageous with his money and dreams of Mars and the next technology that strikes his fancy and his push-back on the censors is far less danger to us than those who, as CS Lewis said, torment us with the approval of their own conscience. For example, Gates. Gates is trying to save the world. He's messing around in 3rd world nations, messing with their health and education and *agriculture*. He's got the approval of his own conscience for whatever he tries to impose on great swaths of humanity for their own good. Can't see why the bureaucracy at Twitter, all little Marxists, couldn't keep jamming Conservatives just as they do now?
They can, but its a relatively small group of people who are doing that, and the board directs the company's direction and culture. Musk doesn't have enough shares to force them to change, all they have to do is form a coalition of lunatics and extremists of 10% or more and he has no say. Which, I suspect, is not that hard to do. Or, even easier, to form a coalition of leftist woke nutjobs who act as proxies for share owners who don't really care as long as the money keeps coming in. 3, 4 years ago Twitter was fun and interesting. I got into conversations with people like James Woods and Nick Searcy, I got followed by Kate Upton's account (doubt she is actuallyl on it, but she probably has a nice staffer that runs it), I had major comic book and publishing people following me.
I mean, it did basically zero for my book sales, but it was kind of fun. Twitter destroyed all of that, that feeling of fun and community and not knowing if Ozzy Osbourne or whoever was going to respond to your latest funny picture. They made it a two-level elites rule police state where they started shoving content and blocking the rest more and more and now its just completely toxic. The often hysterical stuff published on RIA is not evidence of anything whatsoever, other than the rather crude level of propaganda still prevalent in Russia (and that entire region).
As for Bucha, German chancellor's first reaction was the correct one, and telling. He called for access by int'l investigators. Most important unspoken point of that: he wisely doesn't trust either side, including his new pals the Ukes, on the matter. Nor should he, nor anyone else. And as a practical matter, Russia's isn't now and never will be (and never planned to be) in control of much of Ukraine for any length of time, and in the large areas under their temporary/variable control, there is no evidence of "genocidal" activity or anything like the extreme measures urged by the RIA editorial (that's what it is - they have a "news" section, but that piece is one of their contributor columns, which run all the time, and which generally are fairly over-the-top). "You tools. Gab is working and is independent from big tech AFAIK. The only downside I see on Gab is no pron. They have been fighting the fight and building a parallel system and they don't censor anything but pron. --SpecialEd"
One caveat I see to Gab is that there is an undeniable sprinkling of Joo-conspiracty Joo-hatred. I suspect that a good deal of it is planted/encouraged and/or paid for by Feebs but it's present enough, so that it's too easy for the left to characterize it as a "site that regularly hosts alt-right etc...." And this is too bad b/c a lot of posters on Gab are just being pro-family, pro-traditional values and (gasp) often just being pro-Christian. I realize that to the left anything that doesn't overtly embrace tranny surgery for 2 year-olds is "alt right" but I always feel that Gab, by lack of better policing of the more "alt" makes itself a bit too fat a target. I signed up for Truth Social on the day it was announced, and haven't budged from my waiting list spot around 250,000. At this point I barely care. Huge mistake to try to release before it was ready. It's exactly the type of failure that Trump needed to avoid, and yet everything he does is built upon the belief that he can make anything happen with brute force and money. He really did that with vaccine development--something he gets far too little credit for. But this is a high profile failure, and an unforced error, that shows the flaws of the Trump approach to absolutely everything.

One of the tricks the SS protectees love to employ is the old, "rent out a small space on your property to the SS at prices high enough to pay your entire mortgage." I know for certain the Clintons do this. They built a little cottage on one of their properties and they charge us like $50K/month to house that protective detail there. Trump probably calculated that they would--not because they liked him, but because of the Constitution.
Posted by: JoeF. at April 04, 2022 01:02 PM (mR6Gs) That's not how the Constitution works. The Constitution requires that the states have their Electoral Colleges meet at the state capital in December, cast their ballots, and send them to Congress, where Congress in joint session opens the state ballots on January 6 and tallies them. The states don't even have to have elections, and in the early days of the Republic they didn't. They just have to have a procedure to select an electoral college and send its votes to DC. The states did that and Biden got elected. End of story as far as the Constitution is concerned. I thought Texas's lawsuit against Pennsylvania was creative, but really Texas has no say in how Pennsylvania selects its electors, no more than Pennsylvania has a say in how Texas selects its electors. If Pennsylvania is hopelessly corrupt, then the system should be self-correcting over time; people fed up with the corruption will move elsewhere and the commonwealth's influence will decline, or the people of Pennsylvania will get fed up and fix it. That is why the Rs gained in the House (despite all the predictions otherwise that the Dems were going to increase their numbers). In Wisconsin the election officials basically turned the election over to a guy from NYC who worked for Zuckerberg and he and his team changed voting laws and vote totals all on their own. In Georgia there are voting districts that went 100 Biden - 0 Trump over and over. Any rational person who looks at the totality of the cheating in states all across the county knows that Trump did indeed win in a landslide. One caveat I see to Gab is that there is an undeniable sprinkling of Joo-conspiracty Joo-hatred. I suspect that a good deal of it is planted/encouraged and/or paid for by Feebs but it's present enough, so that it's too easy for the left to characterize it as a "site that regularly hosts alt-right etc...."
It's a bit stronger-form than that. Some of the recent Andrew Torba update emails bordered on "Jews are terrible people who killed Jesus". Yeah, what I was trying to say is not what people are known for but what they are trusted or given credit for being able to do. Trump was a very successful executive with decades of experience in running things and handling crises. Oprah was a talk show host who was in a movie. Big gap there in credibility and experience. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 04, 2022 01:37 PM (KZzsI) 520
I think the main issue with Trump's endeavor aside from being horribly rolled out, is as a free speech platform it is 100% going to be sabotaged by mobys. I think some of the problems they've run into are based on the idea of preempting mobys from destroying it'd reputation.

Under Zelensky's leadership the Azov Battalion has been waging war against Ukrainian separatists in the Donbas for years. The death toll is over 10,000 and some suggest it's as high as 15,000. That war has been going on since the 2014 coup and the 2015 referendum voted on by the people of the Donbas for independence. Would have been helpful had the media bothered to cover it.
