Top Story

Agent for the other house on my shortlist is not playing games. Sent the contract right over, only one thing in there that raises an eyebrow, and certainly no deal breakers. Getting my agent to do a walkthrough and then will take it from there.

What I also found while clicking around is a rather nice five bedroom house on 16 acres on the edge of town - with a spare two bedroom house just in case, I don't know, the main house has a puncture. At the extreme upper end of my price range but actually still cheaper than my current place, which is about the size of the spare house there.

The problem is, it's on wireless internet, and wireless internet in Australia sucks. A major reason I selected this particular town is the fibre internet, and this house don't got it. I can do my job remotely, but I still need to be able to do my job.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is officially officially here for officially $1999. (Tom's Hardware)

But actually a whole lot more than that.

And there are no reviews, because Nvidia didn't send out review samples.

It runs at 450W and should be about 35% faster than the RTX 3080 at three times the price.
Meanwhile the Ryzen 5800X looks kind of dead. (Tom's Hardware)

If you want speed you'll go for the 5800X3D or the 12-core 5900X; if you're price-sensitive you'll want the new 5700X which substantially cheaper, uses much less power, and is only 5% slower in single and multi-threaded benchmarks.

9 If you need good 'Net to be able to work, Pixy, that's a major consideration about the houses. When I finally retire and move, whether the area has good connections will be important for any gig work I may do as well as for entertainment and information.

'Tis spring break here, and my boss offered each of us a day off, off the books so to speak. I took Friday (heh, heh, 3-day weekend, heh). Still 2 more days to go. We are expecting some more "severe" weather this evening, almost exactly the same setup as las Wednesday evening. I hope I don't lose power. Plus having a tornado come to visit would be . . . disheartening.

The tech aspect of the story is fascinating. Seems common sense that if you can stop the head of the convoy you've stopped the entire convoy, no matter how many miles long.

21 Nvidia's 3090TI most of the tech YouTubers seemed to have gotten it. JayzTwoCents said a 1000 Watt power supply was recommended. And he ran some benchmarks on it to compare games and such. It really didn't seem like that much of a boost compared to other high end cards. And in fact on some older games the performance was worse.

Super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Cereal, running the wire is a one time cost, and may be worth it for a "dream" property. If it's stupid crazy expensive, can you roll the cost into the mortgage as an "improvement expense" amortizing the cost?

46 Thank you all for the prayers for my wife. You all helped. She is a day of milder misery away from recovery.

She is very weak, with bronchitis. I had it last week. So it is all my fault. OK, I'm over it.

But she has the good drugs, and I am pampering her, so she is on the road to recovery. Sleep will be a great help.

Before we can go in the Doctor's office building we had to get COVID-19 Wuhan tested. Last week I was negative for the 7th time. She was negative for the 3rd time. She gets out less than I do.

And you could buy French Market Blend brand coffee-with-chicory at an independent grocery in the Denver suburbs. Dr. Tichenor's 70% alcohol mouthwash/antiseptic, too. (If you buy the latter, be sure to cut it 3/1 with water as a mouthwash. A 70% alcohol gargle will ruin your throat for a few hours, as I found out at age 14.)

84 My new fiber connection is living up to expectations. I speed check once in a while and I get 500 Mbps/s right on the button. For 25 dollars more I could get a gigabit. 500 cost 50 dollars with free insulation. They offer 2 gig/sec but you need a special router they say. Cost 100 dollars a month. In a few years, this will be everywhere in suburban areas.

96 Fiber is all over the place at least here in Ohio. The normals just cannot access it. I have a friend that installs, owns the company, that installs fiber. Banks have it, Wal-Mart has it, city and county buildings have it. It's all running right by your house. You just cannot have it.

Even though a law was passed in the 90s specifically directing the telecoms to get moving to provide that service, and said telecoms have received billions and are still receiving money from the bill.

And did you know fiber can be hung on power poles and telephone poles? Yep. There's no reason every household with electricity and phone service should not have it by now.

Billions upon billions wasted.

The last house: they stopped 1/2 mile from the neighborhood when they were supposed to put it in the entire city.
This house can't even get cable. I'm working on an Instyconnect system. The closest cell tower is 2 miles away so it should be a great connection.

111 re; New Home. You haven't mentioned an inspector but have mentioned a problem/question about things with the house.

It's common around here to have an independent inspector go over the property and give you an itemized appraisal of what is OK and what is not OK with the property. Many times they will also give an estimate to the cost of necessary repair.

I'd go with that rather than Cat 5e, as it is 23ga, vs. 24ga.
The price he mentions is more along the lines of Cat 6A plenum-rated, and is rated to 10Mbps in the enterprise. 95 meter distance limit, however.
For about that same price, you can get a 6-strand singlemode fiber cable, which theoretically, can be spliced right into their ring. They should provide an NIU on any case, no matter if it's located in your house, or at another terminal location.

114 Oooof, gotta say avoid the wireless stuff. I'm on wireless here in USA, I'm promised "up to" 25 Mb, which would be more than enough for my needs. I'm lucky to get 10-15 Mb, and I often cannot watch a simple YouTube vid at 720p. Streaming TV often looks like that old video game Frogger. I live alone, and usually only have one device using internet at a time; the issues are not because there is too much demand. The high frequency Rf system has issues in rain & snow, too. On the bright side, I am catching up on my reading.
