If you need good 'Net to be able to work, Pixy, that's a major consideration about the houses. When I finally retire and move, whether the area has good connections will be important for any gig work I may do as well as for entertainment and information.
'Tis spring break here, and my boss offered each of us a day off, off the books so to speak. I took Friday (heh, heh, 3-day weekend, heh). Still 2 more days to go. We are expecting some more "severe" weather this evening, almost exactly the same setup as las Wednesday evening. I hope I don't lose power. Plus having a tornado come to visit would be . . . disheartening. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at March 30, 2022 04:41 AM (c6xtn) 10

What happened to that 40 mile long Russian invasion convoy. The tech aspect of the story is fascinating. Seems common sense that if you can stop the head of the convoy you've stopped the entire convoy, no matter how many miles long. Posted by: Divide by Zero at March 30, 2022 05:08 AM (dQvv7) 21
Nvidia's 3090TI most of the tech YouTubers seemed to have gotten it. JayzTwoCents said a 1000 Watt power supply was recommended. And he ran some benchmarks on it to compare games and such. It really didn't seem like that much of a boost compared to other high end cards. And in fact on some older games the performance was worse.

I think it was Saturday morning you were describing the breakfast burrito you had made, and the list of ingredients ended with "Tony Chachere's seasoning", a thing I have never heard of. America is full of such local delicacies, no big ... So here I am a few hours later in an Amish bent&dent store pickin' up some cheap groceries, and what do I see on the herbs & spices shelves ? Sock_rat_eez, there was a seasonings store in one of the Colorado malls when I lived there, 1997-2001, that sold Chachere's. And you could buy French Market Blend brand coffee-with-chicory at an independent grocery in the Denver suburbs. Dr. Tichenor's 70% alcohol mouthwash/antiseptic, too. (If you buy the latter, be sure to cut it 3/1 with water as a mouthwash. A 70% alcohol gargle will ruin your throat for a few hours, as I found out at age 14.)

The convoy story is illustrative of most all the news coming out of the "war" - there is no face value. We had daily pictures of this convoy stalled, and pictures of everything else under the sun in the battle space and now, nothing - so we are supposed to believe the worst? If there was a Kursk-like scene, it would be on CNN 24/7. We are being lied to.

My new fiber connection is living up to expectations. I speed check once in a while and I get 500 Mbps/s right on the button. For 25 dollars more I could get a gigabit. 500 cost 50 dollars with free insulation. They offer 2 gig/sec but you need a special router they say. Cost 100 dollars a month. 1,000 feet is about US$600 for the really good cat6. So, less than $2,000? Posted by: GWB at March 30, 2022 07:47 AM (D/wPf) 107
"a third party cloud provider"
IOW, someone else's hard drive. Someone who doesn't care as much about you as you should. And loads of people don't care about themselves very much (in terms of data/system security). Posted by: GWB at March 30, 2022 07:52 AM (D/wPf) 108

up here they horizontal-drill in 2" orange polyethylene pipe for fiber - if it was on poles any ice storm could take it out.
Posted by: sock_rat_eez The last house: they stopped 1/2 mile from the neighborhood when they were supposed to put it in the entire city. This house can't even get cable. I'm working on an Instyconnect system. The closest cell tower is 2 miles away so it should be a great connection. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at March 30, 2022 08:03 AM (R0vP5) 110

re; New Home. You haven't mentioned an inspector but have mentioned a problem/question about things with the house.
It's common around here to have an independent inspector go over the property and give you an itemized appraisal of what is OK and what is not OK with the property. Many times they will also give an estimate to the cost of necessary repair. Posted by: Braenyard at March 30, 2022 11:25 AM (CLkaN) 112
A mention above regarding Cat 6...
I'd go with that rather than Cat 5e, as it is 23ga, vs. 24ga. The price he mentions is more along the lines of Cat 6A plenum-rated, and is rated to 10Mbps in the enterprise. 95 meter distance limit, however. For about that same price, you can get a 6-strand singlemode fiber cable, which theoretically, can be spliced right into their ring. They should provide an NIU on any case, no matter if it's located in your house, or at another terminal location. Posted by: Gunslinger at March 30, 2022 11:47 AM (R2gO3) 113
Pixy, I guess Musk's Star Link is not a viable option for your needs? Or is that the wireless you were referring to?

Oooof, gotta say avoid the wireless stuff. I'm on wireless here in USA, I'm promised "up to" 25 Mb, which would be more than enough for my needs. I'm lucky to get 10-15 Mb, and I often cannot watch a simple YouTube vid at 720p. Streaming TV often looks like that old video game Frogger. I live alone, and usually only have one device using internet at a time; the issues are not because there is too much demand. The high frequency Rf system has issues in rain & snow, too. On the bright side, I am catching up on my reading.

Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates. Posted by: IJ at March 30, 2022 03:56 PM (2jTUR) Processing 0.02, elapsed 0.027 seconds. |
